@Cerberus I think it depends on how much effort you are willing to put into stretching your speech apparatus and how well you can hear different sounds in your pronunciation and other people's pronunciation. Also, the age at which you begin studying languages.

@KitFox Yes, something like that, although I wonder how the difference can be so great. As to studying languages at a young age, that may make a difference—I don't know. We have had several prime ministers whose English accents were horrible.
Great variation.
And I think he used to be even worse.

I think listening can be learned, but the amount of natural talent varies tremendously.
It's like singing.
You can teach people to sing and sing better, but there is a component that cannot be taught as well.
@Cerberus Yes, not difficult to understand, but easy to mishear.
"The lack of face in the liters"

@KitFox I'm sure that is partly true; but somehow—and I may be wrong—, it is also a matter of effort. Many people seem content with having a pretty strong accent, even though they are physically able to pronounce certain sounds in a better way. I'm sure they could eventually teach themselves to apply those sounds more consistently.
@KitFox Oh God.
He really meant faith!?
You know, that never occurred to me.

"Lack of faith in the leaders" is what he was saying, I'm pretty sure.
But that th is difficult for pretty much everyone.

I wasn't really listening, but I just assumed he was talking about how voters wanted to see face to face with leaders or something—that his problem was grammar and idiom rather than pronunciation. Oh. My. God.
@KitFox Yes, you are no doubt right.
@KitFox Absolutely. It is your most annoying sound!
Present company excluded, of course.

12:21 AM
scowl

You too!

@Cerberus And that is what I was saying about how much effort people want to put into stretching their speech apparatus.
@Cerberus So you mean that I, personally, have a more annoying sound than that?

@KitFox Yeah. I just don't understand how some people don't care.

If you don't like 'th', ask the Welsh
they have about three others

@KitFox Waaahh women! One can never do anything right. "You're so thin" — "So you're saying I was fat?", etc.
@TomW Celtic stuff?

12:23 AM
they might disagree with that, depending on how academic they are

By the way, which pronunciation is more common in America, Kelt or Selt?
@TomW I thought they wanted to be Celtic?

'K' is the only correct way, despite it not being a real term and invented by historians

Seltics for the basketball team. Kelt for everything else.

'S' for the scottish football team Celtic
'K' in all other contexts, else you get a smack in the mouth

How interesting. Sports teams use the S, everything else the K.

12:26 AM
the anthropological term for Welsh-Cornish-Brittany band of folks is 'Brythonic', but don't ask me how you pronounce that

@TomW The only "correct" way?

Breadth ironic
Breathy onyx

@KitFox Yeah, I was aware that there was a sports team somewhere that was always Seltic. But I'm sure both K and S are used for the people/language?

@Cerberus You asked what we use. I told you.

@KitFox Yes, sure. I was sideways referring to Tom's "else you get a smack in the mouth".
Sideways...well, you know what I mean.

12:29 AM
What?

Tangentially.
Hmm still nothing?
falls silent

Still nothing what?
I had to respond to a flag.
To drink or not to drink. ponders

Drink!
It is true: most Dutchmen will pronounce bad/bat/bed/bet identically.
Pronouncing bad/bat identically is a beginner's mistake.
But bad/bed is a lot harder for most people.

@TomW "Don't panic...I know regex!"

(And I think many an Anglo-Saxon will pronounce the two almost the same in quick, casual speech.)

12:36 AM
To drink cider or to drink rum.

Start with cider.

@Cerberus I don't.
@Cerberus There will be only one. I have to work tomorrow.

Let me rephrase that, then: there will be situations where you're not sure whether someone said bat or bet in fast speech.

Maybe if they were Dutch.

Naaah.
You even mishear can't/can in American English!

12:38 AM
That's because the t gets swallowed. A and e are different sounds.

Which pair is generally far easier to distinguish when pronounced normally.
Yes, the t gets swallowed, just as the vowels get slurred.

Time to go. Bai!

Hmm it seems the difference between bed and bad is even greater than between bat and bet.
Bai!

Hi
There was two friends at the entrance of my university with their sick looking vehicle (looks like bmcexperience.com.au/uploads/pics/mini_van_2_02.jpg, but I highly assume it is a rent car) and pretending they are really cool.
Do you think coming to university while wearing WW2 Veteran hat (if your grandpa joined the war he should have it) or riding your dad's police car to university make you look way cooler?

2:23 AM
No.
It's just silly fun.
Like...a joke.
Trying to look cool is probably not the right approach: nice people will realise what you're doing and chuckle.

Nineveh (; Akkadian: Ninwe; ; Nīnewē; Nineuē; ; Naynuwa; Nainavā) was an ancient Assyrian city on the eastern bank of the Tigris River, and capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. It was the largest city in the world for some fifty years until it was sacked and completely depopulated by an unusual coalition of Medes, Persians, Babylonians, Scythians and Cimmerians in 612 BC. Its ruins are across the river from the modern-day major city of Mosul, in the Ninawa Governorate of Iraq. Etymology The origin of the name Nineveh is obscure. Possibly it meant originally the seat of Ishtar, sinc...

@Mahnax you enjoy planning meals and such. I was trying to emulate that quality. I don't think I did very well

have you had your corpus callosum removed, @TemporaryNickName? Do you write stuff with your right hand, while your left hand clicks the delete button?
tough crowd

10:18 AM
OMFG what did they do to flickr?
I can't find anything.

@RegDwighт here you go
to be fair I've rarely used flickr in the past, so any UI changes I won't notice

A: What is the origin of the counting prefixes: uni-, bi-/di-, tri-, quad-, etc.?

Kate morrispre=before-latin bio=life-greek tri=three-latin/greek inter=between-latin re=again-latin ~hope this helped a little!~

Ugh. No sorry, it did not helped.

oh dear
1 out of n ain't bad is quite poor, really

And the one is wrong to boot.

11:02 AM
Morning.
They usually just cut the corpus callosum. Removing it would be nigh impossible.
Also, it's cool and rainy. Skirt or jeans?

@MattЭллен oh but that's the whole point: even you will.
Everything is black now, with one giant photo per page. And no way to navigate anywhere or do anything.

@KitFox yeah, I realised that later. Skirts are normally easier to dry, I'd go with skirt

Hmm. But then boots...
Oh dear. I guess that's out. I have only suede boots.

skirt and boots is fashionable again, I think?

Gosh. Just have one pair of pants and one pair of shoes like every sane person does, and you'd save so much of your precious lifetime for things that actually make a difference.

11:07 AM
But skirt is cuter...
I have one pair or pants and one pair of shoes and also one pair of skirt and one pair of boots, because they still expect women to wear such things and also I like them.

Then have one pair of dice.

Also, sandals.

Only vandals wear sandals.

I have more shoes than I should

Three pair?

11:09 AM
@RegDwighт Trying to avoid scandals.

I barely have enough shoes for one pair.

one for work, one for cycling, one for cycling if it's raining, one for normal use when it's warm, one for normal use when it's raining or cold, smart shoes, new rocks, wellingtons and hill walking boots

@RegDwighт That's only because you spend all your togrogs on Lego.
@MattЭллен You could probably have fewer, but that's not crazy.

I used to have a max of three: smart shoes, current shoes and old shoes

Many men have just three pair.
Damn, these purples don't go together. Stupid wardrobe.

11:14 AM
quick! dye them the same shade

@KitFox what nonsense. Do you realize how many shoes you can make out of Lego?

nice
I couldn't dance in them, though

I thought you swore off illegal building techniques.

yeah, those are more suitable

11:16 AM
@KitFox those are not illegal building techniques, though. Those are legal gluing techniques.

Ick. Well, I'm off. See you on the flip.

toodle oo!

Stupid fancybox.

Hi
Idiom to mean that someone has limited importance in a large group or organization.
A drop in the bucket comes to mind, but that doesn't seem to be the right one.
a little fish in a big puddle?

small fish in a big pond
jinx!

11:25 AM
@MattЭллен Thanks. you mean big?
Not pig?

lol
yeah, I mean big :D
lurnchehtaam

11:44 AM
mumble mumble hatred rage You'd think our tags by now were self-explanatory and idiot-proof. And yet everyone — everyone! — who asks "What is the difference in meaning between X and Y" tags it not with , but with , , or .

12:01 PM
@RegDwighт You can't idiot-proof a system. You can only create a more advanced class of idiots.
@MattЭллен Really? I can't get my shoes to think about anything interesting.

@MετάEd I bring home extra magnetic field and feed it to them. That seems to do the trick.

What do you use to carry it? A Faraday cage or a Klein bottle?

it's in my trousers, I think, as static

@MattЭллен So that's an electrical charge in your trousers, then. Are you still happy to see me?

Ha Ha :D your electric personality is a positive

12:19 PM
Hiya.

Hello.

They think they found the body of the girl who has been missing.

oh dear. That's sad to hear

At least her parents will know, I guess.

12:21 PM
I hope they catch the guy.

Q: Does the word "simpleness" actually exist?

GeeoI always thought the word "simpleness" didn't exist and this was even confirmed by some American friends of mine. However, I tried to look it up on some online dictionaries and I was surprised to find out that some of them report this word while others don't. What's the story behind "simpleness"?

is this really a question?

right.
do we have to explain how language works for everyone who asks this question?

@MattЭллен It's not necessary in this case. The word is actually in lexicons, including OED.
General Reference.

@MattЭллен Yes.
Oops. Reg put that tag on it.

12:26 PM
@MετάEd and they've said they've found it in some but not other so I guess that's why they're asking.

Now I feel like a jerk.

heh
I just added it to the question I answered yesterday
"is it a word?" I understand where they're coming from, but it feels like such a wrong question.

Are you writing today, Matthew?

oh! I will join in, yes, but I will be trying to build a magic the gathering deck, so I won't necessarily be chatting too much

Et tu, @MετάEd? Will you join for the writing exercise today?

12:30 PM
If I can. I haven't been able to in ages.

That's OK. We haven't in ages.

@KitFox not only that, I think I even invented it. You are welcome to rename it, though.

That's the tag we use for questions that should not have been asked, right?

Aye. That's the idea.

Nah, 'sok. I wasn't paying attention, is all.

12:37 PM
in English Language Learners, 21 secs ago, by Matt Эллен
At EL&U we have a class of question called is it a word?. Would these sorts of question be valid at ELL? We're sort of trying to get rid of them.

@Robusto Another interesting podcats:

4 people, no pods, no cats. that is interesting.

We have podmen at home. I tell my youngest about how Podman visited the moon sometimes.

oh! wikipedia was telling me about the 1983 Spanish SciFi film
@KitFox that's cute :D

They are about the size of my hand.
And they change colors (or not if you don't want them to), all blue spectrum.

12:45 PM
nice

@MετάEd NO UR

You want me to fix the spelling?

@MattЭллен no, that's CueCat.
The CueCat is a cat-shaped handheld barcode reader that was released in 1999 by the now defunct Digital Convergence Corporation. The CueCat enabled a user to open a link to an Internet URL by scanning a barcode — called a "cue" by Digital Convergence — appearing in an article or catalog or on some other printed matter. In this way, a user could be directed to a web page containing related information without having to enter a URL. The company asserted that the ability of the device to direct users to a specific URL, rather than a domain name, was valuable. In addition, TV broadcasters co...

that cat is not cute, it's cue
there's a slight difference in spelling

I don't know. I'm not seeing it.

12:58 PM
maybe you need more tea

Dude. My whole shirt is tea.

no need to get shirty

Jez
who turned the hangman bot's difficulty up to 11?

Hitler.

1:06 PM
So okay, I've registered with Tumblr. Now what? I can't use this thing. What am I supposed to use?

you don't need to register to read other people's content

Oh.
Well too late.

but if you want to put up your own content then it's easy (IMO)

I went to Tumblr.com and I couldn't read anyone's anything. It told me to register or to fuck off.

each person's tumblr has an RSS feed you can subscribe to
@RegDwighт yes. that is a big downside

1:07 PM
Ugh. I don't call that using.
Also I am not seeing any persons.
I am seeing like five random images.

Really? I don't remember registering, but i can read Matt's stuffs.

Yeah I remember following Matt's direct link.

in the search in the top right you search for something you're interested in (e.g. limericks) and limericks will appear. also a lot of things about Limerick and some sit com about planes

But when I just go to the website, I only see a big huge button "register" and there are no other links whatsoever.

oh. how poopy

1:09 PM
@MattЭллен but I already specified what I'd be interested in when I registered. And I'm already seeing stuff. I'm just not sure what to do with it. Where do I comment? How do I rate?
I'm too old for this Web 2.0 thing.

No, no, no.
I'm older than you.
You're not allowed to say shit like that.

@RegDwighт ok. commenting is tricky. some people enable comments and such. I don't think my posts have comments enabled
@RegDwighт so the normal way to comment is to reblog, and put your comment at the end

Ugh. I don't even blog. Let alone reblog.

yeah
it's not the best
but it does encourage interaction

I thought this would be something like Reddit or StumbleUpon, where you just see stuff, and vote on stuff, and then it gives you more stuff based on that.

1:11 PM
you can click on the heart shaped button

Oh I see.

that is essentially a "like" button. it's like rating, but without a negative option

But there's no way to say "less of this"?
Oh.

and beware: tumblr is full of drama

I thought it was full of porn. Which is why it took me so long to even go there.

1:12 PM
I guess it's no different to Reddit in that regard
@RegDwighт there is a lot of porn, but you have to search for it

How user-unfriendly.

it doesn't just pop up

Anyway.
You said I can now submit stuff as well? Guess what, I am not seeing any button for that, either.

ok. I'm not logged in at work. but my meagre brain says there are buttons at the top: text, photo, video, chat, something
each of those is a way to submit something
if you go to tumblr.com/dashboard
that's your main page
I think

Oh, that is what those are for.

1:16 PM
also, they've recently changed the submission interface and it's kinda really annoying
you can't use the arrow keys or home or end
it's really annoying
well, sometimes you can, but sometimes you can't. I haven't figured out the details

Jez
why use Tumblr? just setup your own blog.

I have more people following my tumblrs than I have following my blog
although my blog serves a very different audience

1:37 PM
Mirning.

Hoy.

Hillewww

Whatchall doin?
Caught any interesting bugs?

I am programming and pushing code

Oh, that kind of bug.
Is it going well?

1:39 PM
yes. for some reason mnova automatically mirrors and swaps halves on nuts files

Huh.

@Cerberus yup. it's got me stumped, but I've asked mnova support for an explanation.

@MattЭллен Oh, so you narrowed it down?

Ism mnova related to Mininova?

@KitFox yes :D it's quite frustrating, but consistent none-the-less
@Cerberus completely unrelated, AFAIK

1:41 PM
@MattЭллен Hey, repro > non-repro.

OK.

@KitFox yes
@Cerberus mnova -> Mestre Nova
NMR processing software

I put a goldfish in an NMR once.
FOR SCIENCE!

yes!
what kinda signal did you get?

I don't remember. It was for lab about respiration.
The fins moving caused some interference iirc.

1:45 PM
oh. interesting.

@MattЭллен Sounds...novel and masterful.

@KitFox where you doing high field nmr?

It was back in 1996.

200 MHz and above?

I don't think so. I don't remember.

1:46 PM
no probs :D

We used mass spec more than NMR. I think we only used that once.

apparently spinning water gives better resolution, but also so crazy side bands

Speaking of awesome machines. The mass spec took up a whole room. First time I ever used Unix too.

@MattЭллен Well I gave it a shot and published something. Not sure how it looked before, so I could only compare it to other sites, and it wasn't all that annoying at all. Perhaps you were talking about text or video, though.

1:47 PM
@RegDwighт yeah. the text. it can be really annoying. mostly it's fine, though

The Sun workstation had a really cool program for modeling molecules, so we'd run the spec and then build what we thought it looked like and run the modeling program to predict the waveforms.
IT WAS SO COOL!

SO SCIENCE!

YES!

@MattЭллен I found the way it handles links quite strange. And whitespaces, too.
But it worked.

@RegDwighт oh, is that how it makes a big box with green text?
@RegDwighт what is it? what did you post?

1:49 PM
Well guess what. I only have photos of my LEGO stuff.

Couldn't think of anything else.
I would show you, but I have no idea how to link to it.

the top right hand corner of your post is a link to it

giggles

it's super intuitive. only took me a year to figure out

1:50 PM
Top right?

I think so

I licked top left.
Clicked.
Not licked.
Well, first the one then the other.

it turns over, sort of, when you hover over it?

!!give Reg a lick

@KitFox Mmmm! Reg tastes just like raisin

1:51 PM
@MattЭллен FFS, and that is a link?
Now that is the single most stupidest way to do anything at all times ever.

ok I am giving up on "actually" finishing my website and launching it

@RegDwighт on your dashboard, yeah? yeah, that is a link.

I've been building it from scratch for 3 months now

I see two icons there, Trash and Edit, and when I hover over it I get that tiny little page ear, and that is then supposed to be a link? FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

and I feel like it's going to take another 2 months to get all things done

on your actual tumblr then the link to a post can be got from the time it was posted

@TemporaryNickName Sorry, no sympathy here.

@TemporaryNickName yes! launch already!

I am so cruel.

I have started to building this web app because I was motivated by some guy that I saw in internet making money from his websites
but that guy made his websites using CMS

1:53 PM
@RegDwighт exactly.

That reminds me, I should do some w-rk.

@KitFox I remind you?

Yeah.

anyways, I need to do my college homework instead of this stupid web site

It's a better investment anyway.

1:55 PM
this website is not really ready but at least I have something to show to my future employer

@KitFox that reminds me I should be writing invoices for tens of thousands of Euros rather than this here.
BBL

I hate giving up things
because I pretty much never gave up on something so easily

what have you given up on?

You've got better things to do.
So no sense in whining about how you never give up. If you never give up, that means you need to learn to do cost-benefit analysis.
