You are cool. End of conversation :)

@LuisAlvarado I dont think that notice is required at the top.

Except this is the right link.

Simplify it then
maybe a "This is the list of drivers mentioned here...

I recommend the notice be removed.

@Mahesh It's a canonical question.
Notices are good.
@LuisAlvarado Could we shorten it a little bit maybe?

7:05 PM
It is, and that is an excellent answer.
but i felt that notice was unnecessary.

BAH
Bruno killed it :(

@Seth updated answer
do you like it now?

may be just make another question that is totally generic and move the answer there?

@Seth unnecessary clutter

7:06 PM
@LuisAlvarado no, I meant the notice. The notice was too long.

@Mahesh yes that would be good
@Seth just kidding buddy haha

just read it... LOL
random guy comes along "Who's Seth?? Is this guy crazy??"

... You crazy, crazy people

I cannot decide the three yet. contestants are awesome.

7:10 PM
@FEichinger I AM CRAZY!!

Nothing new.

I guess not.
ugh, chat code is so un-optimized.

That code is really not the most user-friendly thing I've seen. Aren't there better ways? And the second question you linked to is actually a [friend-request] where the Moderator-only tag [status-bydesign] is kind of a decisive "no" answer. By the way, I'd like the table support. — Alenanno Jul 6 '12 at 19:29
Does MSO use "[friend-request]" as slang for feature-request?

probably

You guys are crazy.. crazyyyy I tell you!!! (Star this comment will only affirm you lunatic state)

Q: Most recent bad behaviours of SO users I have faced

user1878162I have a serious question with Stackoverflow,and I think meta is a good place to make myself correct on my confusions. As we know SO is a Q/A forum. But when I am putting questions users in a group keep continuing down-vote. After that when I did edit,no one corrected the voting.Being a question...

that moment when you tilt your phone to try and move one of the bird in angry birds.

I've never ever heard of anything like this - have you? I mean, I can't really think of anything that could be wrong with the SO community. No way!

@FEichinger 1 minute: 1 edit, 5 downvotes and 3 comments. Watched that happen 30 minutes ago.

That moment when you answer your cellphone, tell the caller to hang on while you look for a pen and paper and literally put the cellphone on the table and go look for the pen and paper
Best, english course possible
Askubuntu, where you learn english because you are FORCED TO!!

7:35 PM
lol
@FEichinger Have you gotten a chance to try my answer yet?

@Seth Nope. But I'll probably do some coding tonight, so .. reboot incoming. :)

Okay great.

Q: Upgrade matplotlib to 1.2 or 1.3

NickI am trying to upgrade my python matplotlib but for some reason I can't get it to upgrade. I originally installed matplotlib with: apt-get install python-matplotlib which was fine. However it defaulted to version 1.1 I then downloaded the 1.2 source from the website and then extracted the tar.g...

I'm getting reports of errors and I need someone who actually knows what they are doing to help me find their source.
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L So, when do we actually answer your questions anyways?

@Seth We don't. We think about "Can we migrate this?" and decide No.

7:40 PM
ah OK.
@gertvdijk @FEichinger meta.stackoverflow.com/a/167034/203389 <-- needs upvotes.

Already did.

okay great.

A: "Review Low Quality Posts" does not let you say that posts can be improved

FEichingerLooks Good Don't do that. As you said, it doesn't look good, it is not sufficient, it is not elaborate enough. Looks Good should be used for posts that, well, look good. Posts that are fine without an edit, are on-topic and don't need any other action taken. Edit This is exactly what you shoul...

A: What to do when reviewing a good Q/A?

FEichingerUpvote and press Skip Don't do this. Upvoting is a legitimate review, why would you skip it then? Skipping it does not count it as reviewed by you, and just keeps it in the pool. Skippping should mostly be used when you're not sure. For example: You remember something similar being around, so...

Jorge CastroI was sort of happy when I saw that the day after release we had 0 incoming new questions in the review queue! Can we just cut this short?

Hi!

7:55 PM
Hi!

@FEichinger sure :)
@LuisAlvarado :P

links are fun

jrg
Nobody has taken over the world yet because the Stack Exchange sites don't have the required information.
4

@jrg that's our goal though

Read about this chemical, for example

@jrg Go to history beta and ask a question about Genghis Khan

jrg
@Abraham will definitely consider it, :-P

@ZDroid You posted a feature-request. That pretty much means SE staff might at some point look into it and decide whether or not to implement it. What we can say right now is: It's not possible at this point.

Why not?

8:02 PM
Well, because.

That's MD core specs

Seriously, there's no answer other than "it's not implemented"

hahah :D

I'm no mind-reader, I don't know what makes them decide not to use it, it makes no logical sense, but it's the case.

you maybe want to answer

8:04 PM
@jrg yet

ok, that isn't specs, that is syntax, core syntax

Markdown is a mess anyway.

hah
lol @FEichinger

There's a new one about it on MSO, btw: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/138946/…

8:10 PM
See that, than say any. See Alexis Reigel's reply. So, your MD doesn't meet specs.

jrg
There is no spec. just peoples interpretation of a few basic thing.

lol
MD Syntax page is specs ^^

why cry about it. feature not implemented. end of story.

What cry? ^^

jrg
it also hasn't been updated seriously since 2004.

8:15 PM
lol
but see <table> example in sytax page

jrg
that in and of itself is enough to make me seriously wonder. :P

shrug, tables would be nice, but it's not like the site sorely needs them

ok, but how you can say never if any1 need that? :D

jrg
it's just like HTML5, not all implementations of the spec are at the same point in their development.

shrug, it doesn't keep me awake at night

jrg
8:17 PM
There are things that work in firefox that don't work in chrome.
if people need it, then SE will build it.

OK

jrg
in the meantime, i've never been in a situation where i'd need tables.

speaking of html5 did you see the shattervideo demo? neat stuff.

jrg
no. duckduckgo-ing.

jrg
oh man, that's cool @AbrahamVanHelpsing
@ZDroid eh, duckduckgo works. nice find though.

no
google-only :D
Or you maybe search SO (StackOverflow)

I love how HTML5 suddenly made us all stop caring about backwards-compatibility.

lol

8:23 PM
For years we pay web developers huge sums to keep sites working in IE6 and the such.

@FEichinger At some point you have to drain the bath-water

Then HTML5 comes along and we all go "Meh, screw that shit, let's just focus on the new stuff."
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Sure, but we went from "Get this working, even on Netscape!" to "Yeh, well, we don't care anymore, just make it fancy."

I'm not saying sites should just stop rendering at all. Relatively graceful degradation to "Hey, even a phone browses this page properly. You really should install a normal web browser"

jrg
uh, let me tell you, we haven't gone that far yet @FEichinger
people are still paying good money for it to work well in older browsers.
and at work we have a system that has a webui that only renders properly in IE.

chat needs a redesign.

jrg
8:28 PM
why

The sites that focus on actually complying with HTML5 usually have at best a small note "Might not work in your browser."

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Have you looked at the code?

Heh...no

Its on giant mess of <div>s

8:29 PM
The whole of SE needs to get the hell away from tables.

<div>s I tell you!

Ohthat...yes. It's easy to parse though.

It takes three <div>s for one message! Ugh.
</rant>

Well, it's not semantically correct HTML.

Well at least I can access the text.
I thought we purged ?
'cause its back.

8:34 PM
I thought it was purged more than once...

guess that calls for a blacklist request.

Time for some fun - I need to rename a lot of files in a repository.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing

jrg
we blacklisted bug
or rather, asked nicely.

8:52 PM
Just dropping it in here from time to time. This bug could use some heat, specifically since it deals with the launchpad auto-build not exactly working right all the time: bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/1120870

I was just reading about Canonical's dilemma in regards to X11/Wayland.
They're making a huge mistake if they don't adopt Wayland.

I don't know. Wayland is interesting, but I wonder how much it will help/hurt break things. Long game yes, great. But people are just getting over the pain of hot hardware and Unity changes.

I'm thinking on Linux as a whole here.
X11 is an absolute disaster. There's no doubt about that.
The code is a mess, the organization is a mess.

What do you mean "closed as too localized"? Data is still lost on AU! — gertvdijk 36 secs ago
Looks like they're not fixing the data loss for AU

The fact that accelerated graphics work at all on Linux is a small wonder.

9:02 PM
Sure. It's one heck of an undertaking though to pull out the thing that is responsible for as much as X and plop in something else. Just saying.

Oh, I agree 100%.

@gertvdijk Yes, let's make new questions on MSO for every single lost post!

@FEichinger exactly what I was thinking.

It will break things... but considering the fact that the latest version of Qt (5.0) ships with a working Wayland backend - it must be quite mature.

For that matter, will all the GUI toolkits still work? I see you checked your baby, but what about GTK? others?

9:04 PM
@gertvdijk How do you talk to these MSO people?
sigh

@Seth carefully

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I don't know.

we've been talking carefully.

And that's an important question to have answered.

@Seth yeah, it's like "la la la la - I'm not hearing you!" closed
2

9:05 PM
@Seth I'll flag the question for you if you provide a link.
Sometimes that gets a response.

@GeorgeEdison Yes. I think that should be answered first. Do all the "common" GUI toolkits work on Wayland. Fix that first.

@gertvdijk IKR.

Anyway, I'm making it a MAU Q now.

that's worth a star.

@George Nothing like a unilateral decision that could force a rewrite for a third of all guis in existence. That would be pain.

9:07 PM
Well it has to be done at some point.
Unless X12 gets adopted...

there are 5 edits in the queue if anyone has time.

I mean sure...tkinter doesn't have a backend on wayland - no problem. But something as oft-used as Gtk should be working. That way you don't break all the existing code.

Yeah, I know what you mean - you can probably count on one hand the number of developers that actively write applications that use tkinter.
(I actually worked with tkinter at one point... many years ago...)

perl tcl/tk yes?

Nope, Python.
It actually ships with the Python Windows installers.
So you can count on it always being available.

9:11 PM
yeah. that's true.

well i got that sorted... but now the problem is that the remote control is not connecting either using bluetooth or wifi... any idea?? i installed 4.0.1.0 — Nirmik 2 mins ago
remote control?

he probably has a media remote. my hp has one

probably a different problem then, unless he killed something important.

wait, but that's not related to libre-office... maybe a presentation pointer with a next button? did shortcut keys change?

<-- We need that tag

(someone star that please)
@AbrahamVanHelpsing well, we will see what he replies.
the remote control app for android for impress... it was not connecting for some reason... but its working now!! ;) — Nirmik 18 secs ago
@AbrahamVanHelpsing good grief. --^
well at least it was related to LO.

9:19 PM
at least it works

yes that's good.

I wonder what happens to embedded webkit browser local storage when the app closes. Does it purge? If it saves, then where? ...

Q: Can we *please* blacklist the error tag?

SethThe error has reappeared after at lease 2 purges. Can we please blacklist this tag? Reasons for this have been discussed several times already: The 'error' tag should be blacklisted Why do we have an “error” tag? Request: Burnination and Blacklisting of [error] tag.

Q: Some data lost after Stack Exchange server migration Feb. 9

gertvdijkAs some of you have noticed, the SE admins were migrating the services to the NY data centre again yesterday. Unfortunately, some data seems to have been lost in the minutes before the site became read-only. It's at least a few minutes, but maybe more. On MSO, this has been discussed, as it was ...

9:38 PM
@gertvdijk: Can you see if my website is responding faster?
I switched to debug mode.

@GeorgeEdison blazing fast. Literally.

Great, then I've found the problem.
django-compress is malfunctioning.

great. Glad you found the problem. It so fast, I'm amazed.

@Seth: Is it still fast?
I just switched off debug mode but kept django-compress disabled.

What, it's not pre-compressing and cache-ing? It's running the compression operation constantly on every asset requested?

9:42 PM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing No, no - only on the first request.

@GeorgeEdison yes

At least that's what it's supposed to do.
As soon as you request a "unique" combination of static assets, it is built on the fly and kept in a cache.

Yeah. That's what I was getting at. If it's not cache-ing it, that would explain it.

Wow, I should answer my own question more often.

9:55 PM
@Seth Doing it now.

great thanks :)

Gui
what happened to Youtube.com?

Nothing, I think?

nothing on my end.
there are no mods here :(

@Gui YouTube.com is working fine for me; a video is playing on my machine right now. What's happening for you?

10:02 PM
This is awesome: wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-03/31/kinect-drone I wonder how long before that gets turned in to a tool to generate 3D models of building in 3DS Max or Blender?

@GeorgeEdison a lot better

Great.

@Seth Worked perfectly fine.

@FEichinger Excellent. Thanks.
Someone needs to check suggested edits.
I see 8 there.

Gui
@EliahKagan no it works fine... but they redesigned it...

10:08 PM
Ugh...
We are currently investigating some issues with the tool we use for compressing static files - page load times may be affected.

@Gui Not like it wasn't made by Google right?

Random comments.

@Gui I haven't noticed a difference today. Maybe the redesign is being rolled out to some users before others?

@GeorgeEdison How do you manage to attract a spambot that fast?

Gui

10:10 PM
@Gui It's been like that for a while already, actually. But, yeh, same as every two to five months: REDESIGN!

@GeorgeEdison If I append www to your domain, I get a Check your Ondina control panel message

Gui
oh... why did it take me so long to notice then?

Oh yeah, it's been like that for me for a while.

@Gui Always went directly for videos, or checked the "actual" front page rather than the dashboard?
Many reasons, I'm still no mind-reader.

Gui
Maybe... or maybe I am just no "Sherlock Holmes"

10:12 PM
@Seth You may want to recommend deleting the tarball + directory after installing.

@FEichinger hmm yeah, probably a good idea.
just rm dirName right?

@Seth Hmm...
@FEichinger No clue.

@Alvar TL;DR

??

10:22 PM
Too long; didn't read.

just read the topic
the rest is just that google doesn't work and that wubi isn't an iso file so he can't make it a bootable live cd.

you aren't supposed to make a LiveCD of WUBI :S

yeah i know :P

just close as TL IMO

can we close it as not constructive or what?
or that

10:25 PM
or NARQ

or NC

maybe..

or just TL :P
do it!

closed as NARQ

@Seth btw is there a question on how you create a Ubuntu live cd?
can't find one...

10:29 PM
Ouch ... Just got informed a friend of mine passed away last week. Think I'm gonna call it a day for now. Cya, folks.

ehm cya...

Cya @FEichinger.

@FEichinger ouch. sad to hear. all the best. cya.

@Alvar idk, but I have to run as well.

@gertvdijk do you know if there is a question on how to create a live cd for ubuntu?
can't find one...
but it might be off-topic to ask on how to do it in windows/mac/ubuntu

10:32 PM
@Alvar as in, how to burn ISO to CD?

ANYONE HERE? :S
@gertvdijk no as in creating a live cd
for usb
who uses cd no days anyway?!

customized or plain ISO to USB?
you ask CD!

plain normal ubuntu
LIVE CD

31 secs ago, by Alvar
@gertvdijk no as in creating a live cd
CD != USB flash drive :)

@gertvdijk live cd = bootable usb where you can try ubuntu first

10:34 PM
@Alvar I'm not sure if I can follow that. CD is an optical disc. USB flash drive is something else. anyway: ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

@gertvdijk yeah someting like that link...

in the sidebar there are instructions for other OSs. I always link to there

booting form live cd is what you mean when you boot with the GUI installer on a USB device.
@gertvdijk ok, just thought we should have a tutorial for it here, but realized it might be off topic isnce windows/mac is off topic here...
:(

LiveUSB

I've alwyas thought live cd was the name of the installer...
beacuse it's the same program...

10:38 PM
