Evening!

2 hours later…
3:31 AM
@Martha: Please don't thwack me... it wasn't a pun, technically speaking.

3:48 AM
@Cerberus: Shame on you. What are you doing asking such a cockamamie question? Are you pulling a T-Rex, or do you really believe what you wrote? Seriously. Anyway, I'll take my answer offline.

@Rob: Note the date.

Should the pronunciations question just be locked?
Is anyone who posts to that list actually saying anything nontrivial and checking for duplicates?

@Billare You can edit your posts.

@kiamlaluno It was too late...I think more than 10 minutes you can't edit any more.

Right, but why did you re-post the same exact question? :-)
I keep forgetting about the timeout edits, now that I don't have any timeout.

@kiamlaluno For the same reason I just responded to your question late...I noticed that sending @ someone makes the sound on chat activate and alerts them to the window.
@kiamlaluno And I didn't do that at first.

@Billare It also reports the post in the StackExchange menu for the cited user.

@kiamlaluno Yes, that's true, but the sound is much more noticeable for me when I'm browsing other tabs in the window. Sometimes I'm not even browsing the same window.

4:34 AM
The sounds are only heard if the user is on a different browser window/tab, or a different chat.

@kiamlaluno If it's slow -- like it is when most of the Eastern seaboard users are offline -- then anyone in chat is very likely to be browsing a different window/tab...or maybe that's just me.

@Billare That depends on where you are; if you were on the Eastern seaside, you would notice Eastern seaboard users are offline. Well, you should be offline too, if you are on Western Europe.

Q: lets go usage in sentence

Rauf NicoleHi, I would like to know more about the word 'lets' and such similar words?

I am a bit disappointed that nobody got my joke, except of course the Queen of Thwack. My question on prepositions was loaded with clues. I mean, come on.
Well, I suppose it is best that I sleep off what is left of my happy state and face the consequences tomorrow.
Though I must say that the edit made by someone else to my title was fun.

5:34 AM
@Cerberus Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed how ... oblivious everyone seemed to be. I mean, wasn't your answer to my comment enough of a tip-off?
Anyway, good night. Or good almost-morning. Hope you don't have to be anywhere before noon tomorrow.

5:50 AM
@Martha: Perhaps people confused April 1st with Rep Whore Day? Could be. Thanks! Bai!

@Cerberus Jokes that are specific for a day don't come out well, when 80% of the planet is on a different day.
Apart that, the question is still a duplicate. ;-)

4 hours later…
10:19 AM
@Cerberus — Sorry I went all medieval on your ass there. The time to play April Fools pranks is in the morning, not late at night. And especially not when SE time is into April 2 already. And after half a bottle of Toasted Head Cab Sauv I was a bit slow on the uptake.

10:32 AM

Q: Why is most north American speech rhotic?

nicholas ainsworthMost North American speech is rhotic - why is that? Does it come from the early English settlers or perhaps from the Irish settlers?

This and others nicholas ainsworth just posted seem like they belong on the mythical Linguistics.SE.

Q: Sources say English was rhotic in the 17th century - how do they know that?

nicholas ainsworthSources say English was rhotic in most places in the 17th century. How do they know that? Obviously, we don't have any samples of recorded speech from that time.

I think that would be easy to add one to one.
In Italy, where April fools is called "April fish", the joke we make is to attach a paper fish to the back of somebody, who goes around without knowing he has something attached.

Eh, maybe they're OK. We'll see if they garner any other close votes.
France has the "fish" thing going too.
One mans meat is another man's poisson.
Getting breakfast. TTYL.

Getting lunch. TTYL. :-)
(The time difference; I will never get used to that.)
(By the way, I guess it's lo Cabernet.)

@Robusto THWACK.
