8:00 PM
but later to get redemption,, the guy who was framed but comes back and gets back the girl

The last element in his list is not a gerund.

As my friend who attended Texas A&M told me, there's nothing wrong with enjoying wildlife unless they catch you at it.

Most of us outgrow the wild life sometime in our 30s.

then IE will come a long and sit on both of them, crushing them to death.
@MετάEd that's be funny if it weren't true.

user19161
@Mitch If I were on Windows, I would use IE I think. I kind of miss it...

8:02 PM
@JasonBourne I miss netscape.

user19161
@Mitch Not my generation.

I also miss the days when we lived in caves.
low maintenance

user19161
@Mitch Yes, I miss that too. Life was better then, not so complicated.

@Mitch How could you tell when it was day if you were in a cave?

it's kinda funny because no one -ever- lived in caves.

user19161
8:03 PM
Also, people are almost naked, so that's very nice.

unless we cut them out of rock directly.
humans have almost always lived out in the open, building leantos and such for cover (if ever)

user19161
I think as humans continue to evolve, one day we might walk the planet naked again...

with global warming maybe

So, you’re rooting for global warming?
jinx

otherwise too cold for that

8:05 PM
There are serious problems with walking around naked. For one thing, the ground is very ouchy on your footsies.
Then there is the sitting-down-on-WHAT?! problem.

That's why we'll evolve to fly

@tchrist You haven't been at it long then, tenderfoot.

Even Bilbo donned boots at Rivendell for the trek up on over the Misty Mountains.
No fool, he.

user19161
@tchrist Are you Yoda?

@JasonBourne SIGH Why must people always get that so miserably wrong?

user19161
8:08 PM
@tchrist Yes, I knew there was something wrong...

Yoda is just poorly autotranslated from Latin.

Yoda-speech is an extremely specific and entirely predictable variation on the standard SVO ordering.
What I did was something else.

user19161
Wow, this room is really pretty with the blue and orange!!!

Not every possible syntax variation is Yoda.

user19161
@MattЭллен That's what the carbon dioxide in pepsi does.

8:35 PM
@JasonBourne Feisty they are:

user19161
@tchrist Rollback war? How is that detected?

You’d think that in their rollback war they could at least have managed to leave occurrences spelled right.

user19161
@tchrist Haha, I always edit this word here.

user19161
I can tell you that Fumble often misspells this one.

@JasonBourne Seems pretty easy to come up with an auto-flag to get a moderator to check whether it is a rollback war.
It is the second most frequently misspelled word in the English language.
Plus you know what? That really does look like a war. A mod should lock it.

user19161
8:40 PM
@tchrist So many edits and yet occurrences is wrong, WTF!

It is a rollback war. We have more than one edit per minute going.
I just added my flag weight to the pool. That should float it up. I have a (William-the-)Conquering 1066 helpful flags on SO, so my flag should help move it up the ridiculously long queue.
So the algorithm that auto-flagged it was spot on.
See, they keep going at it. This is not going to end well. SO has a lot of mods, but it is Sunday afternoon.
I forget what other flags it had on it. I think there were three others.

user19161
@tchrist Well, if there are no mods, so be it. Nobody is going to be killed.

Well, that I could see. I can’t see custom flags, like the one I just threw.
I just meant that this may go on for some time.
I know no one will be hurt.

user19161
Actually, some people will be hurt emotionally.

user19161
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" is bullshit.

8:45 PM
I wonder why we see the too-many-comments flag. I have no idea what we are supposed to do about that.

user19161
Actually, what doesn't kill you makes you weaker.

I guess we can sometimes delete the whole post in some cases.
But usually that flag means a mod should consider whether things have gotten out of hand and should be pruned a bit.
Here is another rollback-war flag. However, this one is not real/right/legit.
It’s just one guy doing microfixes, trying to get it right.

user19161
For the previous one, you can just comment there and shame all of them how they misspelled the word.

user19161
Then they will all stop editing, LOL.

Oh yeah, I am sure that would stop them in their tracks.

user19161
8:51 PM
They are all BIG egos.

Ya think?
These are C# and/or Java programmers.

user19161
Well, maybe.

Can’t tell. They keep flipping the tags.

user19161
Hey @mitch any exciting stories for me?

8:53 PM
@JasonBourne There's been a recent interpretation of that, that Nietzsche was being sarcastic when he said it, that he was making fun of the miltaristic attitude of the Prussians.

Well, I put a delete vote on it. Takes two more. I guess Rob could, too, but there are only a handful of ELUers with delete privs on SO. Purdy. JSBangs.
Actually, there are only a handful with delete privs both places. I haven’t checked the other metric.

user19161
@tchrist Wow we don't see that many edits here.

We don’t see 400–500 flags in the flag queue, either.

user19161
SO is HUGE.

here's a question.... where is everybody?

user19161
8:56 PM
Math gets many questions too, which is why it is easier to earn rep there than here.

user19161
@Mitch I am here with you.

@Mitch I can answer that question; would you like a list of IPs? :)

in the sense that all the people who -should- be interested in ELU, where are they?
@tchrist can you give me mine?

user19161
@Mitch It's SUNDAY. Only losers like me are here.

@Mitch Sure, I could.

8:57 PM
no I'm asking a different question

user19161
Oh dear, did I just call you a loser too?

Two delete votes. Just one more.

think of all the online web forum thingies (like LINGUIST, and alt.usage.english, and Yahoo Answers, and sci.lag, and dict.leo, and all the others that I don't know about.
@tchrist which question? I'll do the extra one.

@tchrist What question is that?

This one:
-7
Q: find occurances of characters in an unordered/special character string

user1921476Is there any way I can make the program more efficient ? Requirement :- Write a java method that takes a string as input and returns a string that consists of the alphabet letter [a-z] that has the most occurrences in the input string, along with the number of occurrences. Case should not matter...

9:00 PM
@JasonBourne I think so, but for you it is the middle of the night. For me, I'm wasting precious day time.

They are now up to 36 edits, and now with more than just two edit warriors.

user19161
@Mitch Well, it's even worse, because only losers stay up in the middle of the night!

user19161
@tchrist Is there an auto lock after X edits?

You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if our edit warriors weren’t given a short vacation.
@JasonBourne Not to my knowledge.

no that's the time to use up on a keyboard. day tie is for hiking and chopping down trees and physically attacking the enemy.
hm... you're right. best to ambush during the night
take them by surprise.

9:01 PM
Ok, it is deleted now.

vanquish them in their sleep.

user19161
@tchrist HAHAHAHAHA, gone!

yay. less is more!

@Luke You play, ah trumpet?

It's a cornet

9:02 PM
(the deleted question, not the vanquished ones)

Since the edit warriors are all below 10k, they won’t keep editing it now that it is deleted.

@CCInc And yes, I do play cornet

@Luke Ah. Are cornets in different keys?

Whoa, since when is Luke all in blue?

user19161
@tchrist Wow, you know how to rub it in!

9:03 PM
Yes. They come in fewer keys typically than trumpets

Ah, OK.

so where are all the language lovers?

Most commonly Bb and Eb

I am trying to play the bugle at the moment.

user19161
@luke I see you are a mod!

9:03 PM
Yup
@CCInc Nice

Use these powers wisely, my son.

user19161
I only know one Luke in real life. He is very handsome and very smart.

Thing is, I have tuba lips and it is kind of hard to play sometimes once I wear out my muscles.

all lukes look alike

So am I. :P

9:04 PM
all lukes lick lakes

user19161
So am I. =)))

@CCInc Same here.

Huh.

luke's duck likes lakes
licks them too

user19161
@Mitch Wow, now ELU has degenerated into these!

9:05 PM
@tchrist I never suspend more than half of my users at any given time. :)

degenerated? we've come up from what it was

@tchrist Qhich question?

@CCInc I wear out quickly

@Cerberus Doesn’t matter. It is deleted now, and the warriors were <10k, so it stopped. But thanks.

@Luke Ward wears weird wired weirs

9:06 PM
@Luke Yes, I do also

I'm working on it

How?

user19161
@Mitch Did I tell you there is a store called Mitch and Marc?

I use Arban

user19161
I use my vocal cords.

9:06 PM
Just constant practising

@tchrist Hmm odd. We don't often get to see edit wars.

@Luke Ah, interesting!

@Cerberus It was on SO.

@JasonBourne No did I tell you a story -by- Mitch?

Problem is, with bugle, I am kindda limited on notes, and I don't have access to a trumpet.

9:07 PM
Is there a common manual for bugles?

@Luke You mean documentation?

user19161
@Mitch No, is it about a "friend"?

@tchrist Ah OK.

@Cerberus we should just have one to see what it is like.

@Mitch No. Take that back.
Or I'll roll you!!

9:08 PM

@JasonBourne No it is about me. and by me.

user19161
I am rather protective of my own questions. I don't want anyone to edit them now.

The Arban Method (La grande méthode complète de cornet à piston et de saxhorn par Arban) is a complete pedagogical method for students of trumpet, cornet, and other brass instruments. The original edition was published by Jean-Baptiste Arban in 1864 and it has never been out of print since. It contains hundreds of exercises, ranging enormously in difficulty. The method begins with fairly basic exercises and progresses to very advanced compositions, including the famous arrangement of Carnival of Venice. Text Introduction In the Introduction J. B. Arban covers the range of the cornet (trum...

@tchrist OMG huge picture!

user19161
@Mitch OK, I am listening.

9:08 PM
@Cerberus I tried editing it but it timed out already.

Meh.
Too bad.

I actually have an english question
in C# on Stack Overflow Chat, 13 mins ago, by CC Inc
OK, what's the object of the preposition in this sentance? "Skis are made from plastics and other materials." "plastics and otehr materials", right?

@CCInc Sort of like Hanon for piano

@JasonBourne oh. I don't really have a story. YOu asked for one earlier but I'm all out of them.

Ah, I am kindda learning piano also

9:09 PM
Same here
Are you my sock puppet?

I could tell you one, but it'd probably be the plot of a recent movie Ive seen, so not particulary interesting (or novel)

@Luke "LOL" as they say.

@Cerberus Nope. :)

@Luke I don't know, have you written a chatbot lately?

user19161
9:10 PM
@Mitch OK. Anyway I enjoy talking with you. Maybe we will meet some day in person...

Well, I've got to finish dealing with a user on my site. I'll be back in a while.

Oh oh ohohohohoh I have a chatbot

That sounds like the start of a musical number.

@Mitch I don't really program

Luke, I think you do, your chatbot just said so.

9:11 PM
@Luke (rest)-duh-duh-duh-DUM

Oh...

user19161
The only "programming" I do is using TeX.

@tchrist OMG my poor data connection! For people on 56Kbps modems, that is a lot!!

I do have an actual bot.

@CCInc What is it used for?

9:11 PM
Now you made me come back! I'm leaving for sure now

@Cerberus Funny you should say that. I am actually running on a 56Kbps modem right now. Just not my default route.

user19161
I am surprised there are so many minor mods on SE.

@JasonBourne you do realize of course that you -can- program in TeX, it's a macro language with variables (but some limited number like 256.

@JasonBourne It’s the augmented ones you have to worry about.

@Cerberus The current version is more for SO chat, but I can make a modified version for, umm, this chat if anyone likes?

Cerberus (), or Kerberos, (Greek form: Κέρβερος, ) in Greek and Roman mythology, is a multi-headed hound (usually three-headed) which guards the gates of the Underworld, to prevent those who have crossed the river Styx from ever escaping. Cerberus featured in many works of ancient Greek and Roman literature and in works of both ancient and modern art and architecture, although the depiction and background surrounding Cerberus often differed across various works by different authors of the era. The most notable difference is the number of its heads: Most sources describe or depict three ...

Ehh...

user19161
@HangBot My eyes!

Magic, you see.

Those are things a chat bot does?

9:14 PM
Wait, where does it get its pickies from? What if someone asks it to get something indecent? Would it find that, too?

man, those romans are so derivative!

cc/beautify Cerberus

@Cerberus It can be modified to do pretty much anything

Those are things a chat bot does ?

LOL

9:14 PM
@MattЭллен Unpossible.

true, true.

user19161
@Cerberus Let's not confuse the ELLers.

@CCInc Okay, so it is basically a user script for this chat room?

@Cerberus Possibleable

I have "SE Chat Modifications" installed, but doesn't appear to do anything.

9:15 PM
@Cerberus Yes, I suppose.

@JasonBourne I'll stop if they stop

@JasonBourne Let's!

It responds to your commands

@CCInc OK noted.

CC/grilled cheese sandwich
waiting

9:16 PM
"LOL"

Yes!

user19161
LOL is a palindrome.

um nom nom nom

@JasonBourne Yes, I know. I meant to use quotes

user19161
Om mani padme hum.

9:16 PM
what exacctly does that mean?
'leave me alone I'm napping'?

Ok, nobody type ᴄᴄ/ɪᴍᴀɢᴇ ᴀᴜᴛᴏꜰᴇʟʟᴀᴛɪᴏ.

user19161
I think there is a whole Wikipedia entry on it.

user19161
@Mitch LOL.

user19161
@Mitch I can use that as my new mantra.

@tchrist I HOPE I put a censorer on it... I use safesearch at least

9:18 PM
cc/image "something really really small that cannot be seen under any circumstances"

Any?

@CCInc The problem is that that is a Wikipedia article.

You would just ask it for the wiki for it.

@MattЭллен Umm umm umm broken

9:18 PM
lol

BUGZ
:(

user19161
I wonder how many English teachers we have on ELU.

@tchrist Ah, I see.

We don’t need to see pickies of gents going down on their cars’ smokey mufflers, I’m sure you must agree.

user19161
I have seen some from their profiles, but they are mostly ESLs themselves.

9:21 PM
Hee. I just realized I made that string non-searchable. Cool.

user19161
Wow, you are a very talented programmer!

9:34 PM
This is as good as it gets:
Double digits would be nice. Ain’t gonna happen.

I'm back

Hey, Luke is back.

Oy
Hey, I have my mod powers in this room too!

@JasonBourne There is no @tchrist without Christ. However, there is also no @tchrist without thirst, itch, sith, shit, tics, or tits. Also, no shirt, no @tchrist. Nothing about programming, though, really. Unless strict, this, or C count.

???

9:45 PM
So it's not just the coloured square.
You have turned into Jasper Novus.

Jasper Novus?

What's with high-rep ELU users and solid colored gravatars?

Jasper started it.
Now known as Jason B.
I don't know why.

yesterday, by MετάEd
Okay, amber it is.

KitFox already got rid of her's

9:47 PM
17 hours ago, by Cerberus
Oh God, another coloured square. What is this, Windows 8?

There was a conversation in Red and Green. I felt inspired to add Amber.
The cow has apparently gone Purple but was then Green.

The Fox was at one point fuchsia.

I saw that last night

God, I hate the Israelian government.
Sorry.
reading various news articles
Looks like Peking has become Mordor.
Smor levels are literally off the scale. The index goes up to 500 micrograms/m², but Peking saw (or didn't see) 886 microg/m² today.

I'm not convinced you can blame that on the Israelis

9:56 PM
@Cerberus what were they in LA when it peaked?

@Shog9 Both are in the east. Tolkien predicted this.
@JohanLarsson I have no idea...

also strange measure weight/area

But apparently, the concentration is normally not off the scale. Anything over 300 is considered "alarming".

@Cerberus pretty sure that was "smaug"
3

@JohanLarsson Oh oops, I meant m³, my apologies.
@Shog9 Haha yes!

9:58 PM
@Cerberus ah, that makes more sense

@Mitch You mean like this?
@Cerberus You are suggesting Mordor aligns with China.

@MετάEd Or perhaps China is a victim.

Mordor is at about the same longitude as eastern Europe: possibly under the Mediterranean Sea or in north Africa.

10:29 PM
Question!
@MετάEd Probably closer to Israel.
> where power is acquired and exercised in a just manner, we may call it legitimate. Naturally, what is believed to be ‘a just manner’ differs with time and perspective, allowing for different conceptions of legitimacy.
What do you think of "differs with time and perspective"?
I didn't like it, so I edited this into:
> varies depending on time and perspective
You English experts, advise me!

@Cerberus You have more rep than I do, so it's not my place to advise you.
Hello, by the way.

@Mahnax But but but...
Hello.

How's things?

Good, good.
So you have no opinion on varies with time and perspective v. varies depending on time and perspective?

I think your version is a bit better, for clarity's sake.

10:37 PM
OK!
So then I have one vote for depending on.

I had no idea Anne Hathaway could sing.

I have no idea who she is...

Not that I knew who she was before I watched Les Mis or anything.

Oh hehe.

I strongly recommend the film, by the way. It's incredible.
I'm not a huge fan of musicals, but it was so good.
Russell Crowe's voice is fantastic.
I should read the book.

10:40 PM

user19161
@mah Boo!

Hi Jasper.

user19161
@Mahnax Oops, I see you discovered my secret identity.

@JasonBourne Er, yes. Secret.

user19161
@Mahnax I also discovered that you are Dostoyevsky!

10:43 PM
@JasonBourne Yes, a little bit.

Is it like an ELU tradition for high-rep users to have solid avatars?

user19161
@CCInc No, and we are not "high-rep"!
