Why do Linux people always say to read the manual when it would be so much easier to just give you an answer? There's no manual! It didn't come with one.
@MichaelHampton I just find it entertaining that 99% of the time that HN links to something on the SE network, the post is closed and HN people complain how SE sucks because they close down interesting conversations
@wfaulk Etsy is that hobby/craft site, so that's out. "ee tee cee" is about as bad as "vee aye are" for /var. Expanding the abbreviation? Do you do that for /lib? I just say "etc". :)
I cleaned up a post about the FAQ in meta. I'm hoping to see if the person asking it really is interested in a useful discussion or just in ranting some more. They don't have to accept my proposed edit but it should hopefully show them that their post is a more acceptable without cries of "bullies" every other sentance.
@RobM I fear the latter. What's interesting is their change of attitude from change your faq to allow my question to change your faq to explicitly disallow it. I don't think he doesn't really understand how SE works- his comments give that away. He even notes in one of his earlier comments that there are lots of closed xampp questions but he still chose to plough on
The scope of serverfault is really difficult to define because server means whatever anyone wants it to mean to justify their use case
@iain you may well be right... I've challanged him to prove us wrong on that score though, because some of the points he makes aren't entirely bad ones.
@RobM I agree with some of his points but they should be a separate discussion which is unrelated to the faq although I know from experience they would go down badly in some quarters
yeah, but editing them completely out of his FAQ discussion on those grounds wouldn't end well. I'm not expecting the changes I've made to go over well and all I've really done is cleaned up the sly name calling and irrelevant crap.
I have a 4 scsi drives in a RAID 5 configuration and one of them has failed leaving the server in an interim recovery configuration. I have 2 more drives in the server that just show up as unassigned in the Array Configuration Utility.

And to be honest, I don't buy that everything has to spelled out 100% to new users. The world just doesn't work like that - we have our shop window, but if you turn up to a new club you stand back and get a feel first

The SF FAQ, in my opinion, is seriously flawed and really needs updating. Like it or not, newcomers will refer to the FAQ for guidance and a definition of what this site is and...
@Dan I thought he was borderline trolling the other night but gave him the benefit of the doubt. His recent mSF comments now put him firmly into troll territory, in fact he's probably living in an alternate pythonesqe reality
@iain seems you were right about that guy. Like I said earlier, I thought that would be the case but I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Apparently I am part of the "bullying" and ganging up on him precisely because I didn't do so on his earlier posts.
Some of his comments / points aren't completely unreasonable and our definition of topical is hard to, uh, define. But at some point, things are just going to have to be organic
@Iain Good point, and @RobM yes. Mind you, he his an IT Professional with more years experience than any of us. I hear he was lead developer at Bletchley
@dan that's why I wanted to give him a chance earlier even though I thought it would be futile. He's actually picking at a boil that's probably going to need lancing soon anyway.

The law uses language like "reasonable person" and we're not far off that, really. "Would a reasonable, experienced IT Professional find this acceptable?"
We initially thought it was a typo, or that she was talking about physically on the keyboard but... no, she was convinced there was a letter between Y & Z in the alphabet, and was complaining that our keyboards didn't have it.
Mind you, she was a PhD in English, so maybe she meant to say that she'd just researched it into existance and wanted us to support her new discovery.
These are the people who we trust to teach our kids. And we wonder why education is going down the crapper!
@RobM Seriously, you an I could go for hours over a pint I imagine. I really try hard to avoid anything like a BOFH (Outside of here) but I really do find myself wondering how these people live
well you find idiots everywhere you go, and we've all done something stupid every now and again, but I think a lot of people in education have mentally "never left school" and don't have a clue.
@RobM I do longer term projects now, but back in my field engineering days my mates used to love drinking with me because I could just reel off insane story after story
what's funny is that we hire a lot of the university-aged children of staff to help us out over the holidays, and they usually come in full of "well XYZ can't be that dumb they seemed perfectly normal when my mum's talked about them before". We assign them a few calls to that person and it doesn't take long before they come back shaking their heads
@RobM Haha, ah, the indoctrination! The other thing that annoys me day to day is the presumption that you're the "IT Guy" and will therefore assume responsibility for anything and everything

to be fair we don't get too much of that in the college environment... mostly from a few people who come to us from schools and rapidly get put in their place by liberal application of "go away, we don't work for you" from the helpdesk staff
I just finished installing a debian VM on my dedicated server. I checked install GUI in the installation, and I can RDP to it, but I forgot to install SSH. When I RDP to it, it brings me to the GNOME login screen. I try to login as root, but that doesnt work. What can I do? Thanks
The screen where it prompts to install X/gnome/etc is the one where it prompts to install ssh. They configured RDP (which takes some legwork I think?) but didn't see the SSH checkbox..?
Don't think Debian gives the root user a password by default in the install anyway, and its SSH config most definitely blocks root regardless.. so if all he has (or thinks he has) is the root user's password, SSH wouldn't help.

@ewwhite Perhaps, but there's not actually enough detail there to determine that. It could be a question of keeping multiple hosts synchronized for all we know. It's totally NARQ.

@ewwhite And I very much disagree with the notion that anything that can be sent to another site should be. Crappy questions should be hammered flat NC/NARQ and the users assisted in writing better ones. If we get good questions that merit migration for OT, then we go there.
