12:00 AM
Happy New Year
(UTC)

@Iain yeah yeah

12:19 AM
@ewwhite Doing great - opened it up and looked inside. Mucked around, booted it up.
Got four of my 10k drives in it.
(At the KIA dealer now so kinda distracted)

Yo guys
is there a hat for posting within the first hour of the (UTC) year?
damn well should be
is there a drinks cabinet?
stumbles about

@growse There's a hat for a starred chat message on NYE, that might cover that...
@growse Here, have some of this egg nog. (don't worry, it's a traditional mostly-booze recipe)

12:48 AM
dammit! was there a leap second?

okay, then wtf?
all my servers are reporting 1s off

The leap second was 6 months ago, so something's definitely wrong there

very strange
the monitoring system was off by 1s
I resynced it to its sources and now its okay

@wfaulk What were you doing that you would notice a 1 second time discrepancy?
Sounds like some NASA shit

1:03 AM
hah. nothing but monitoring

@growse I think I got within 5 minutes of local midnight. :)

At the KIA dealership. Novelty SSIDs were funny... in 2001

@freiheit, I don't like eggnog. I have rum instead

Pretty fly for a wifi?

Am I making this up, or do I remember, about 8 years ago, there was a leap second, and a version of ntpd I had running at the time (on linux) basically did a dance in the logs for that second?

1:05 AM
@growse All nog, no egg (or cream)? Ok

said something like "Hey, it's a leap second. I'm going to dance for a bit"
@freiheit I'm going for more rum

@growse Bring shum rum for the rest of ush

I'm on this
snobs may scoff, but it's actually rather lovely

Ok, I'll scoff if desired :)
My bottle is rather less full, but I started a week ago

nagios tells me I have 4 active 'warnings'.
Rum tells me not to care.

1:14 AM
I'm a simple man

@Mechanicalsnail good choice sir

70cl / 50% Indian Single Malt Whisky
Amrut Fusion gets its name from the fact that it uses two barleys: Indian and Scottish - with the latter being peated for good measure. Fusion has been picking up awards ever since it first appeared in 2009, and in 2012 was named the best whisky for a Rob Roy in the Ultimate Cocktail Challenge in New York.
Whisky Bible Awards 2010 - Third Finest Whisky in the World

@Mechanicalsnail good choice sir
@Hennes interesting concept

1:16 AM
I got a 5ml tasting bottle for my birthday. I liked it, so I got a larger bottle :)

@growse Single malt means all real whisky and all from a single distillery, not all from the same batch

@growse You edited your old message to reply?

@freiheit yes. damn straight
@Mechanicalsnail wat?

@growse The one I replied to above.

oh wait
I see
actually, no I don't

I've no idea what's going on right now
I didn't mean to edit that
rum-induced accident

@growse you probably accidentally clicked 'edit' on your own message and replied... I've accidentally done the same thing. without rum, even

all chat should be rum-based

@growse They said all pkgs should be rpm-based
and it didn't happen.

@growse Don't you dare try to take away my whisky!

1:21 AM
I'll give you whisky-based
ok, I'm going to have to go now
because someone's complaining about a MAHOOSIVE SPIDERZ

@growse Bribe the spider with rum

@freiheit That will never work, but cocaine might:

@freiheit Was that one of the Ig Nobel papers?

@Mechanicalsnail Watching the video might answer that...

1:27 AM
love that gif

@growse There's also one with a polar bear.
Found it.

excellent

These were from knowyourmeme.

1:52 AM
@growse There was a leap second in 2012. It caused some issues with ntpd

Q: Why do Linux people always say to read the manual?

Tim MorrisWhy do Linux people always say to read the manual when it would be so much easier to just give you an answer? There's no manual! It didn't come with one.

Best. Question. Ever.

2:33 AM
@MichaelHampton Exactly the kind of awesome question that HN would love to complain about how it got closed as NC or OT...

Pardon me, but I don't give a flying fuck what HN complains about.

HN?

@MichaelHampton I just find it entertaining that 99% of the time that HN links to something on the SE network, the post is closed and HN people complain how SE sucks because they close down interesting conversations

2:57 AM
^ Still at the KIA dealership. And seriously... who loves lamp?

"/etc": pronounced "etsy", or "ee tee cee", or "et cetera", or what?

3:16 AM
@wfaulk Etsy is that hobby/craft site, so that's out. "ee tee cee" is about as bad as "vee aye are" for /var. Expanding the abbreviation? Do you do that for /lib? I just say "etc". :)

@WesleyDavid Just what sort of Kia dealership is that, that people are having sex within earshot of it?

@wfaulk I've always said "et cetera"

@wfaulk I hear most *nix guys say etsy

Happy New Year All
Hi @iain

@RobM ayup

how's it going?

I'm just trying to put something together to answer the new FAQ question on meta
How're you - I had a quiet one last night and didn't even get mildly drunk

Happy New Year :)

You too @cole
@iain likewise, very quiet...
I cleaned up a post about the FAQ in meta. I'm hoping to see if the person asking it really is interested in a useful discussion or just in ranting some more. They don't have to accept my proposed edit but it should hopefully show them that their post is a more acceptable without cries of "bullies" every other sentance.

11:49 AM
@RobM I fear the latter. What's interesting is their change of attitude from change your faq to allow my question to change your faq to explicitly disallow it. I don't think he doesn't really understand how SE works- his comments give that away. He even notes in one of his earlier comments that there are lots of closed xampp questions but he still chose to plough on
The scope of serverfault is really difficult to define because server means whatever anyone wants it to mean to justify their use case

@iain you may well be right... I've challanged him to prove us wrong on that score though, because some of the points he makes aren't entirely bad ones.

@RobM I agree with some of his points but they should be a separate discussion which is unrelated to the faq although I know from experience they would go down badly in some quarters

yeah, but editing them completely out of his FAQ discussion on those grounds wouldn't end well. I'm not expecting the changes I've made to go over well and all I've really done is cleaned up the sly name calling and irrelevant crap.
hey @Chopper3

hi

how you doing?

11:56 AM
ok'ish - at least the weather's nice today

yeah that makes a welcome change

Q: How to rebuild or replace a drive in a RAID5 array

user151520I have a 4 scsi drives in a RAID 5 configuration and one of them has failed leaving the server in an interim recovery configuration. I have 2 more drives in the server that just show up as unassigned in the Array Configuration Utility. The failed drive has been marked as failed and replaced with...

2:40 PM
It's a RAID5 URE problem.

Dan
Just watching the 50 Best Olympics moments on BBC3. Forgot how much I enjoyed it

it was amazing wasn't it - still can't believe we didn't fuck it up

Our coverage was messed up and heavily-skewed toward Uh'mericans.

How's everyone doing today?

@Cole Hungover. x.x
also HI COLE! :3

@TomO'Connor heyyy :)

Did you have a good Xmas/NYE?

So I woke up, and I didn't get too drunk last night. I only had 2x 24oz Sierra Nevadas over like 4 hours.
But my classes are broken
/shakes fist

@Cole I had like, a bottle of wine, more or less
felt rotten this morning.

I feel like shit. My cat would NOT let me sleep

4:04 PM
Aww.

So I went through my phone and deleted all my ex's numbers, their friends etc. 2013 will NOT be like 2012

@Cole No, 2013 is gonna be AWESOME.
When's boobday?

5:03 PM
That Martin is a complete bore

@Dan Yeah, I was curious how he'd respond to some comments and it was pretty much as expected.

Dan
I genuinely think this is becoming a big thing about nothing
Fundamentally, we have someone who isn't aligned to the community complaining about the community. As far as I can see, it's like me joining the church (As an atheist) and then whinging about how everything is run
And to be honest, I don't buy that everything has to spelled out 100% to new users. The world just doesn't work like that - we have our shop window, but if you turn up to a new club you stand back and get a feel first

5:26 PM
Hmm?
@MilesErickson Happy 10k!

Q: Proposed new language for FAQ

martin'sAt the request of Stack Exchange staff --who like the changes I have proposed-- I am posting this here for discussion. The SF FAQ, in my opinion, is seriously flawed and really needs updating. Like it or not, newcomers will refer to the FAQ for guidance and a definition of what this site is and...

This guy, again

@Dan I thought he was borderline trolling the other night but gave him the benefit of the doubt. His recent mSF comments now put him firmly into troll territory, in fact he's probably living in an alternate pythonesqe reality

Wow... he's gone nutty
what triggered it?

Dan
@Iain Haha, I think you're right. I love Python but I'd never seen that clip :D

@ewwhite he had 2 xampp questions closed. he went to meta and made some demands which didn't go down well so he tried to flounce

Dan
5:35 PM
I don't think he's to keen on me now

That's ridiculous.

Now he's just gone mad

@iain seems you were right about that guy. Like I said earlier, I thought that would be the case but I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Apparently I am part of the "bullying" and ganging up on him precisely because I didn't do so on his earlier posts.

Dan
@RobM To be fair, having now caught up on every post and comment of his, I'll admit to wanting to slap him in the chops

Can't say I blame you.

5:38 PM
Heh, I didn't even know what Xampp was.

the tool of the devil

Dan
I just still don't get his motivation for caring that much

@Dan he doesn't he just wants to be the centre of attention

I'm beginning to think the answer to that is "Because he's a fucking lunatic" @dan

Dan
Some of his comments / points aren't completely unreasonable and our definition of topical is hard to, uh, define. But at some point, things are just going to have to be organic
@Iain Good point, and @RobM yes. Mind you, he his an IT Professional with more years experience than any of us. I hear he was lead developer at Bletchley

5:39 PM
@dan that's why I wanted to give him a chance earlier even though I thought it would be futile. He's actually picking at a boil that's probably going to need lancing soon anyway.

Dan
Taught Turing everything he knew, I gather

@Dan our scope could cover everything IT related because server is whatever someone says it is

Dan
@Iain Exactly. Even the law isn't that well defined, hence judges etc making decisions
The law uses language like "reasonable person" and we're not far off that, really. "Would a reasonable, experienced IT Professional find this acceptable?"

indeed

Dan
Ah, sod it, we should treat ourselves like a pirate enclave. Hang his head on a post to warn off future visitors from stupid arguments

5:45 PM
@Dan first define IT Professional

Dan
@Iain Bugger
(But also, exactly... You can't define everything in black and white)

IT Professional - someone who believes that high voltage is a valid method of training end users.

Dan
Tell you what, I'm in no way prepared for work tomorrow

@dan neither am I, and I need to take a swing at fixing that switch that my boss borked as soon as I get in the building.

@Iain I'd ban that guy, he's 100% a troll

5:51 PM
He's 100% fucking cracked too.

Dan
I think he's gone now

If I wanted to deal with that kind of crazy, I'd go to work and engage a teacher in conversation.

Dan
@RobM Aw man, please don't remind me. My head is far too fragile for those thoughts

@dan did I tell you about the english lecturer at my college who complained that our keyboards didn't have "that letter between Y & Z"?

Dan
@RobM No.....?

5:54 PM
I locked the question does that lock/stop comments on the answers too ?

We initially thought it was a typo, or that she was talking about physically on the keyboard but... no, she was convinced there was a letter between Y & Z in the alphabet, and was complaining that our keyboards didn't have it.
Mind you, she was a PhD in English, so maybe she meant to say that she'd just researched it into existance and wanted us to support her new discovery.
These are the people who we trust to teach our kids. And we wonder why education is going down the crapper!

Dan
@RobM Seriously, you an I could go for hours over a pint I imagine. I really try hard to avoid anything like a BOFH (Outside of here) but I really do find myself wondering how these people live

well you find idiots everywhere you go, and we've all done something stupid every now and again, but I think a lot of people in education have mentally "never left school" and don't have a clue.

Dan
Yeah, and it really shows. You can tell "career change" teachers a million miles off

I'm sure the rest of the people here must think we're exagerating.

Dan
6:02 PM
@RobM I do longer term projects now, but back in my field engineering days my mates used to love drinking with me because I could just reel off insane story after story

you've seen the horror
what's funny is that we hire a lot of the university-aged children of staff to help us out over the holidays, and they usually come in full of "well XYZ can't be that dumb they seemed perfectly normal when my mum's talked about them before". We assign them a few calls to that person and it doesn't take long before they come back shaking their heads

Dan
@RobM Haha, ah, the indoctrination! The other thing that annoys me day to day is the presumption that you're the "IT Guy" and will therefore assume responsibility for anything and everything
It winds me up even more as an external consultant because staff still think you're being an arsehole if you tell them you can' thelp

to be fair we don't get too much of that in the college environment... mostly from a few people who come to us from schools and rapidly get put in their place by liberal application of "go away, we don't work for you" from the helpdesk staff

Dan
Right then, Chinese time
Because I just haven't eaten enough crap this holiday

enjoy

Q: Default Debian GNOME password?

CJ ScultiI just finished installing a debian VM on my dedicated server. I checked install GUI in the installation, and I can RDP to it, but I forgot to install SSH. When I RDP to it, it brings me to the GNOME login screen. I try to login as root, but that doesnt work. What can I do? Thanks

You can forget to install SSH? Without significant effort?

My knowledge of Linux is weak enough that I'd struggle to fail to install it on purpose. I'm not sure how you'd go about "forgetting".

@Hennes yea by default ssh is not always selected as a standard package in Debian

Really? I've learnt something.

I've done the same with not allowing root login and forgetting I hadn't installed sudo yet :p

Wow. If there is one thing I would expect to be default it was telnet (in ancient times) and ssh (recent times). X etc would be optional

7:05 PM
what @Hennes said

X is optional
but it's selected by default I think

Maybe the OP should use LILO and set init=/bin/bash. mount / -o,rw ;-)
Though I am pretty sure that is outdated by now

The screen where it prompts to install X/gnome/etc is the one where it prompts to install ssh. They configured RDP (which takes some legwork I think?) but didn't see the SSH checkbox..?

Though a recent Slackware 14 install still used LILO

Don't think Debian gives the root user a password by default in the install anyway, and its SSH config most definitely blocks root regardless.. so if all he has (or thinks he has) is the root user's password, SSH wouldn't help.

7:08 PM
Hmm, no torrents from Debian on their website?

Even osx *nix includes SSH by default

@RobM The server's not on by default.

yeah but IIRC its installed and ready to go

Ah, found it. And I completly forgot Debian is now FreeBSD kernal based.

@RobM Not a lot of difference, I don't think. One package installation isn't really a huge barrier to getting it turned on.

7:14 PM
fair enough

@Hennes I think they ported it, but I don't think that's the 'main' version.

That would explain an unknown kernel x86 and a freeBSD kernel_x64
Hmm, and nobody seeding the CD image. :(
So much for friendly bandwidth helping via torrents

Did you guys know about online rescan of disks in Linux using: echo 1 > /sys/class/scsi_disk/2\:0\:0\:1/device/rescan

Yes

or is that type of command string common knowledge?

7:19 PM
Used that a lot when my 'server' was a P100 with SCSI drives in swap bays

different than scanning an adapter...

It was mapped to a script triggered by control-alt-del.

I'm thinking in terms of VMWare and HP logical drives... resizing block devices

Plug in drive, press crt-alt-del. Wait 1 minute and have it mounted
Same way for unmount

So I needed the following magic...
zpool set autoexpand=on vol1
echo 1 > /sys/class/scsi_disk/2\:0\:0\:1/device/rescan
zpool online -e vol1 /dev/sdb
to increase the size of an underlying device.
(adventures in ZFS on Linux)

Q: Hyper-V Thread Priorities host and guest - how do they correspond?

TomTomYes, funny question. Given: A host for Hyper-V virtual machines. A HPC type Cluster. THere are a number of virtual machines on it. They do not use up the CPU most of the time. We also run a HPC style Cluster in house - agents pull Jobs and process them. There is a talk to install the Agent on ...

10:30 PM
Am I a bad person for searching for questions about "raspberry pi" and voting to close all of them?

@MichaelHampton yes, he asked a question
got a good answer, too.
but I'm pissed that he was upvoted higher than me and gave bad advice to another user!
in an exchange where a bunch of his comments were deleted.
so, so rude.

@MichaelHampton Nope. No sane person would use a Pi in production.

I still think that we're abusing the Off-Topic close reason.
Stupid idiotic question, but if it were properly written & researched, it could be quite good

@Adrian That's a perfectly valid off topic close. He is not a sysadmin of either server.

not off-topic, but not good as a sysadmin question

10:40 PM
Though, he could have been pointed to Webmasters.SE

@ewwhite Where exactly do you get that information from the question?
For instance, the current place I've got my stuff doesn't have shell access either. Haven't had time lately to get that sorted out.

@Adrian If you are hosting data or using a VPS, etc... expect that you'll have to either copy direct between systems or have an intermediate step.
It's more of a web dev question
scope on the size or amount of data would add color to the question

@ewwhite Perhaps, but there's not actually enough detail there to determine that. It could be a question of keeping multiple hosts synchronized for all we know. It's totally NARQ.

... But I didn't want to send such a crappy question to them.

@MichaelHampton Exactly, it should've been hammered flat as NARQ.
Marking everything OT does the users no good either.

10:43 PM
part of being a good admin, or even a user, is asking good questions. Not having enough context in the question is a bad sign.
I wouldn't have closed it... I would have added comments with specific questions.
"where are you hosting? how much data do you have? are you TomTom?"

Anybody got a link to the "how to write a question" .SE blog post? my google-fu is failing me under Dayquil. =/

never mind :P

Thanks. Hate having medicine brain.
@ewwhite And I very much disagree with the notion that anything that can be sent to another site should be. Crappy questions should be hammered flat NC/NARQ and the users assisted in writing better ones. If we get good questions that merit migration for OT, then we go there.
@tombull89 That 'clone script' guy doing phishing or summat?

@Adrian I didn't say migrate it. I said that it's something a web developer should be able to answer.
Because it's always the web devs who have to deal with issues like moving data from one host to another.

10:55 PM
@ewwhite so should a junior sysadmin too, for that matter. It's a shit question.

@Adrian Dunno...the site he links to looks dodgy as hell.
What is a Pinterest clone script? A Pinterest clone script is a php software coded in ajax and php which lets you create your own pin website just like Pinterest. Users can pin pictures from other websites and create boards, which can then be liked or repinned by other users.

@tombull89 Yeah, I don't visit the links posted in questions much. Unless it's in a pretty tightly controlled VM.
whoops. Need to go run an errand. laterz.

@MichaelHampton .hole would be better, more likely to be approved.

or £880 for a .cu?!

Oh, I know what domain I'd like to buy, but it's something like $200/year

It's incredible how some range from next to nothing to £900+

there is allegedly a large pile of rusty cars in the middle of Tuvalu from all the money they made from .tv but didn't know what to spend it on
Meta time! What to do with the "ios" tag? Apple or Cisco?

@Andrew Wait till apple buys Cisco.

Seems a bunch of [ios] questions need to be tag-checked to [apple-ios] then

11:21 PM
iOS for Apple, IOS for Cisco.

@WesleyDavid Cisco have some interesting product placement in of all places, NCIS:LA

Also, wait for Apple to buy ISO?

Apple will buy everything eventually, and it'll be one huge megacorp. I, for one, welcome our new fruit-based overlords.
