12:00 AM
I guess having it as a grand prize of the contest would be awesome
but then the contest really has to be a challenge

What do you mean by VAT?
as far as parts that wouldn't have to be replaced I'm not sure I understand as well

A value added tax (VAT) is a form of consumption tax. From the perspective of the buyer, it is a tax on the purchase price. From that of the seller, it is a tax only on the "value added" to a product, material or service, from an accounting view, by his stage of its manufacture or distribution. The manufacturer remits to the government the difference between these two amounts, and retains the rest for themselves to offset the taxes he had previously paid on the inputs. The "value added" to a product by a business is the sale price charged to its customer, minus the cost of materials an...

oh got it...
@IvoFlipse gotta go... I'll let you know what I can pull together for "sponsors"...
peace

np, I'm off to sleep!

2 hours later…
2:22 AM
i made a few grammatical edits to some of the posts in the quee
spelling errors mostly
i've also started a post for my browsers comparison
and now i'm off to eat

1 hour later…
4:05 AM
@nhinkle thanks for doing that...
@IvoFlipse I made contact with NewEgg on the phone, the guy took my info and said he'd give it to his management and that if they get back to me they're interested... if not then they aren't
I'm planning on calling back in two weeks...

4:17 AM
hopefully that works out @KronoS :)
i've started my browser comparison as you may have seen
thinking i should probably do a fresh install for the benchmarking
but i don't want to wipe this, so i might install in another partition
wish i had another computer around to use :/

4:33 AM
step up @IvoFlipse?

gotta start writin @Sathya
:P

ah
poof

6 hours later…
10:27 AM
Oooh, nice

I made you an account on the blog
your password is the default: ivoisawesome one :P

Wow, my first time near a blog...
@IvoFlipse lol

Mmmm, I think it looks good, I'm just tempted to add a bit to the end. Oh, there's an edit button :)

indeed, feel free
I only made minor changes to get it looking a bit more consistent

10:32 AM
Aye, that was exactly what I had in my head :)
Dang, not sure how to phrase it...

what do you have in mind?

I think I've got it now, just the second to last sentence. I wanted it to be something of an encouragement.

Here's a submitted blog post by Elmar Schraml Let me know what you make of it
very good

I think that map works perfectly there...

I like how meta-ish your post is btw
almost like the stackexchange blog sometimes explains site changes and stuff

10:42 AM
I was sure that I'd seen a "This is what a good question looks like" posts as a starting point but for the life of me I couldn't find them...

there is, but it's called How to ask great questions or something like that
written by Jon Skeet
I'd say we need a SU version of that ;P

Ah, I was looking in the wrong direction then
I was sure I'd seen something like that around, but google was not helping me yesterday.

On Podcast #58, Joel and I had a disagreement. Not the first, and certainly won’t be the last:

Joel says that the only bad simple question is a duplicate simple question. I say simple questions are OK as long as they’re actually interesting (in some way) for other users to consider and answer. To prove his point, Joel actually asks the question on Stack Overflow: How do I move the turtle in LOGO? Do you think this question adds value?

We still have this disagreement. Our community is now struggling with the very same issue across multiple network sites: …

It was along those lines...

I'd argue the opposite for SU, we need simpler questions
How to annotate a figure in Word 2007? "Hi, I used to have Word 2003 and for the life of me, I can't find the darn annotation option anymore! Where on earth did they hide it?"

10:55 AM
Aye, a question begging for a simple answer but with no meat on it...

Well they'd still have to follow those steps of showing us what he tried, where he looked
but I can guarantee you, there are so many things that are not obvious when you're not attached to your computer 18/7

I think I'm happy with my post, is there an approval process or anything?

for now I let Kronos decide when to post
but I'm the benevolent dictator for now :P

Lol

if only because I sit on the pile of cash to spend on awesome hardware

11:07 AM
Just noticed there's a "change author" dropdown, did you want to remain the author?
so that you get the blame BWUHAHAHAHAHA

5 hours later…
3:58 PM
@IvoFlipse, should I invite Mark Szymanski here since he has written a blog post?

4:38 PM
well let's first have Bloodphila or Kronos spice it up a little :)

4:50 PM
@ivoflipse marks post is good but there are a few "side" comments that don't really flow. Maybe an edit if those would be helpful. The content is great but the comments of "I don't know why" and "others were better than mine" I don't think add to the content.

exactly :)
but it was like 1:30 AM when I helped him write it :P
so I couldn't force myself to edit it any further :P

Also we need to determine whether to add every poster as an editor or if they're going to be just "guest" posters
Lol well I take a crack at it mate today but I first have to get a network up and running today

good point, I think if we add much more, they would just be Authors or even lower

Agreed

btw on the side, there's a link from Elmar, perhaps I'm going to make him write a blog post about a book that's useful for SuperUSers
as the guy literally reads more books than I do
and I got another guy who was interested, but he forgot to sent me a draft as well :P
and I need to pick a next guy to interview
I'm also considering on focusing most of the SU funds simply on the blog

4:56 PM
somebody reading more books than @IvoFlipse !?!?! Impossible!!!!

we have the most control over it, it's fun for a lot of people, we don't need external help, it scales across the network
and stays pretty true to what we do on the site anyway

@IvoFlipse I think that may be a good idea (the funds that is) mainly becuase I feel it'll be the best way to get the most publicity

that too
we'll still do a contest at some point
but rather when we exist 2 years (makes more sense)
and we can just hand out stuff we blogged about
besides, we can do that last part at random anyway

exactly... I like that idea... maybe by then we'll have some sponsors as well...

or rather: dude, we think you're awesome: write us a blog post about this and you get to keep it!

4:58 PM
when is the two year mark? August?

think so
don't let him hear it, but we should also mimic Howtogeek's style somewhat
only based on our own content

I like that idea even better... Altough the contest idea is great... I think it also promotes "fluff activity"

and it should be original, so we don't get into problems with copyright and such

I want to do a combination of howtogeek, tested, and tomshardware

so I'd rather pay for licenses for some writers than steal stuff

5:00 PM
/me no clippy i don't need your help today

yeah that sounds awesome :)
I ditched tested from my feeds, but those guys are awesome
I wish the team would slap some simple ads on the blog though, just like on JoelonSoftware and Codinghorror

They don't tweet much so I subscribed to their tweets

once we get sufficient views
and I plan to organize the guys on Gaming the same way
and we'll just do it ourselves on Fitness :P
what kind of workout do you do?

Well NewEgg said that if they do select they'll want adds.... we could add them if they do decide to sponsor
right now.... nothing :(
but I try to go to the gym every mon, wed, and fri to do some lifts and then swimming for cardio

what kind of ads? because I wouldn't mind the ads like on tomshardware

5:03 PM
I also want to get back into biking and running... I ran cross country in high school and deeply miss the "runner's high" i used to get

well perhaps there's some nice swimming gadgets you can try ;)
I'm getting myself minimal shoes to test/compare

@IvoFlipse lol... I have always wanted to try nike+ running software/shoes
but won't til I get back into it...

I also want to start some sort of campaign from fitness.se to get so/programmers more active
ah you have an ipod right
what kind of phone do you have?

actualy I have the iPhone now as well

:O
there's a micoach app on there
though it works with nike+ too
I'm just a big micoach fan ;P

5:05 PM
is the micoach free?
or cheap?

I just started a 'circle' where I can coach other users
the app is, the Pacer system is 120$ I fear
but I need to find some web service where you can 'challenge'/'monitor' users
then we could set up users to run 5ks 3x/week or cycle for 3h/week stuff like that
just to get those lazy programmers off their asses
if you're talking about making the internet a better place: keep them healthy while you're at it!

Lol that's a great idea

that makes it even more important why fitness should be for all forms of sport
to make sure everyone can ask questions, as long as they move their ass more!
I'm sure Jeff will agree :P
I just need to find the right concept

You could do something like the meetup only for getting up and exercising

@IvoFlipse @KronoS would smartphones still be offtopic for the blog as they are SU in general?

5:21 PM
depends on what you want to write
but the best solution is that we need to get blog on Android and Apple too
problem solved :)
all the more reason to put all my funds/effort on the blog
because if you guys are happy, you can make the other sites happy
that makes Jeff happy and we all want Jeff to be very happy :P
2

5:47 PM
It'd be to do with Windows Mobile / Windows Phone 7 (the unrepresented one :) )

hmm that's more difficult as we don't have a site for it yet
though if it makes a geeks hard pump faster, I wouldn't say no to it directly
I just uploaded a draft from Lucas McCoy about MetroTwit
It's a nice start, but it needs some more substance at the and to explain what other features it has
or things that might suck about it
just so you know :)

hey @IvoFlipse, @KronoS
i'm about to take a nap (just got back from paddling and am exhausted), but before i do...
i'm going to do some more work on the browsers post today
and i'll take a look at all the pending posts and fix any little mistakes i see
i think there should be an announcement on the blog asking for more contributors for the blog
i can write up a short post basically summarizing ivo's meta post if you guys would like
also everyone should vote this up so it gets in front of people:

6:06 PM
isn't that effectively the same as

@Mokubai no, it's not
my first one was promoting the blog itself
the second one is asking for writers for the blog

Mmmkay
Fair enough :)

anyhow, naptime
@IvoFlipse, @KronoS, @-mention me with any info you have and i'll check it out when i wake up

6:23 PM
good idea about a blog post about looking for writers

4 hours later…
10:09 PM
welcome back @nhinkle

hey @IvoFlipse
i enjoyed my nap very much :)
have you seen this?
my ad for the blog is the most-clicked-upon so far :D

interesting :D

it's always nice to get more readers :)

indeed
we're going up again :)

can we get google analytics installed on the blog?
the stats thing installed with wordpress works, but it's nice to see more detailed stats

10:15 PM
I'm not sure, we'd have to ask Rebecca
I'd love more stats too
btw if you need any benchmarking tools for the browsing tests, just let me know

you or studiohack sent me something which looks useful
i can't do the tests until i get a fresh install, which i can't do until i make a large enough partition to install another copy of Windows, which i can't do until i resize the existing partition, which i can't do until i defrag it, which i'm doing now :)

is it a laptop?

yeah

darn you :P

lol, why?

10:18 PM
else I could have sponsored a SSD or something :P

you could still sponsor an ssd
remember i want to do the optical bay caddy thing and review that?
@KronoS and i were just hoping we might get kingston to send me an ssd too if they like all his write-ups

oh right, well that would make your live easier right?

quite

I just wonder how I should order those, but have them delivered at your place :S

most sites give an option for you to have a separate billing and shipping address
if we confirm we can get those, i'll need to open up my laptop and check out the optical drive connectors to make sure we get the right kind of caddy

10:21 PM
kind of important :P

yes, rather
i have to go, but i'll talk to you more about this later @IvoFlipse

no problem ;)
enjoy your saturday!

11:14 PM
@Mokubai @IvoFlipse I'd do a review of the WP7 if you guys buy me one and a two year contract :P

sorry to disappoint you, we're not about smartphones :P

maybe how WP7 relates with Windows 7 or something...ah well, it was worth a shot @IvoFlipse
@nhinkle what is that?
@IvoFlipse I have an extra drive space in my laptop, that's empty, I could always put an SSD in there

do you have any plans to test anything?

@IvoFlipse are you talking to me?

you asked me a question didn't you?

11:26 PM
yes, but you didn't reply so I wasn't sure :P
other than boot times of Windows 7, no, @IvoFlipse

well that's not really a great excuse to buy you a SSD ;)

I know @IvoFlipse :P
my machine is my main one and critical to my school, so I can't do a whole lot of experimental stuff with it

actually it should, you should have decent backups, separated the files from your OS and use version control (Dropbox and Mercurial) to protect your system from unexpected events

11:52 PM
@studiohack That was one thing I was considering, I've pretty much had Windows Mobile 5, 6, 6.5 and wanted to do a "history of windows mobile and the future of WP7" but it is very off topic
@IvoFlipse I'm looking to do a post about the common misconceptions about 64-bit vs 32-bit OS'es... people seem to have some very wrong ideas about why/how/can I make 32-bit XP use 128GB memory... still... sound any good?

yeah sounds interesting
do you need 128 Gb of RAM to test it? ;P

Lol, I'd need a server (I do anyway, some day) to test XP with that much...
Anyway, sleepy time.
