8:47 AM
nice interview there

9:39 AM
thanks, I drafted it, so now Kronos only has to push the publish button on it

6 hours later…
3:26 PM
@IvoFlipse since you're giving me the 'publishing power' here's my thought:
today Kingston RAID-0 post (just gotta re-read and make sure that my 2:30 AM writing isn't crazy)
monday will be @BloodPhilia's post as the QOtW
Nxt Wed will be your interview
Then either Tues or Thurs will be the concluding Kingston review
that sound good?

yeah sounds great
I'm trying to get more people to start writing as well

I see that and that's great
It makes me happy to see so many interested in the blog now.
also, I tried to tweet newegg:

hehe, the more writers, the more posts, the more attention and the more funds we'll get eventually :P

@Newegg The #SuperUserBlog (blog.superuser.com) has a proposition for you... You interested?
I was thinking that maybe we could get them to "sponsor" us, or gives us some deals for a sweet PC build
I was thinking that we could create the official "Super User Crysis PC Build" as that seems to be the standard "super game" out there

That would be interesting
Just link all the parts to Newegg so people can buy it too

3:32 PM
@IvoFlipse exactly! They get a bit of advertising and we get some good deals
hopefully
But first before I build the "ultimate PC" I want to do a Google/Microsoft cloud comparison:
1. email
2. docs
3. storage
4. etc.

3:47 PM
that sounds interesting as well

3 hours later…
6:31 PM
@KronoS nice new post
i'd suggest some changes with the graphs though
when comparing the speed of the RAID vs. the single drive, where you have to graphs, it's very difficult to tell what difference there is because the axes are scaled differently
i would recommend scaling them the same, i.e. have them both go up to 600 so you can see how much faster the RAID is
also, it might be nice for us to develop an SU blog excel template. the default template looks very.... default :P
also i still want kingston to send me something but haven't heard back :(

7:09 PM
@nhinkle thanks for the suggestions... perhaps I'll do the SU colors and I'll scale the graphs later today...
as far as Kingston goes... they haven't retweeted any of my tweets as well... don't now what's going on

8:01 PM
perhaps simply email them

8:35 PM
@nhinkle I've updated the color scheme of the graphs and updated the SSD vs RAID graph as well to show the difference correctly

@KronoS you switched them around, but it's still not clear whether it's SSD or Raid in some images is it?
oh wait, the title :P

@IvoFlipse lol... if you think though that I should make SSD black and raid light blue then I can do that as well...

I wonder whether it would have been better to compare all Read vs all Write or Max vs average in separate figures

ok... will do that...

just to see them both in one graph I mean
I'd separate it for max and average

8:47 PM
@IvoFlipse Ah..... well that'll have to wait til I get to class

don't worry
it already looks nice :)

8:57 PM
So this is what I've put together for the Google vs Microsoft:

Things to compare:

* Email:
- labels
- folders
- junk
- sync with outlook
- all in one solution
- alerts

* Chat:
-Link to other chat clients
* Calendar:
-sync with iPhone
-sync with Android
-sync with Outlook
-
* Document Editors
- reliability
- usability
* Cloud Storage
- Space
*Searching
- Google Googles vs Bing Images
- Top results to desired page
- Spam on front page
Anything else that should be added?
@Bloodphilia @Tomwij you now have access to this room...
@Bloodphilia I have scheduled your post... it looks good, and will be published as our Question of the Week for next week
Unless @Sathya or @studiohack compose an alternative post for the questions they posted on the meta site... If they plan to then I'll move to post yours for either tomorrow or Sunday
@MattJenkins you now have access to this room as well

9:16 PM
Good point, @Sathya and @studiohack should step their game up :P
that break down looks useful enough
you could simply ask it on Meta, like you did with the SSDs

@IvoFlipse I will, but waiting for a bit more clarity from myself and other "trusted" users first

You can compare Browsers too :P
but I'd split that up to a separate topic

@IvoFlipse oh that's true! Forgot about that...
This is going to be a multi part posting

9:48 PM
@IvoFlipse
31 mins ago, by Ivo Flipse
Good point, @Sathya and @studiohack should step their game up :P
you want me to step up my game?!

that's what it says doesn't it? :)

what is that supposed to mean @IvoFlipse? lol I don't write much, if you are implying that I need to write a blog post based on flashing the BIOS...I still don't understand it enough to write about it

A: Super User Questions of the Week #9

studiohackAnother possiblity is this question: What is "flashing the BIOS"? I'm aware that this is my question, however it is a commonly misunderstood topic and severe consequences can occur if not carried out properly... I'm not suggesting this because it was my question or to get myself...

Well you can draft something in Google Docs, so @Bloodphila can help help edit it into something 'decent'

I don't even have Google Docs :P

time to get an account then :P

9:52 PM
don't you have to pay for Google Docs @IvoFlipse?

voila: have fun with it :)

oh seriously?!
I have enough in my life already lol

that's a document on my account that anyone with this link can edit

yes, I'm figuring out Google Docs at the moment
sorry, Google Docs isn’t my thing :P
will draft something up though, and let you know

you can just copy paste from Word too
it's just that it's easy to collaborate

10:01 PM
yeah I can. back soon!
oh @IvoFlipse, I've never written a blog post in my life. FYI
you've been warned

fah, you've written enough answers and already hundreds
writing a blog post isn't anything more than an answer on SU with context and the liberty to express your opinion

oh how much opinion can I have? lol I didn't know there was room with that

I'd say that almost anything goes, but remember that it shouldn't hurt the image of Stack Exchange
but some criticism and humor is definitely allowed if you ask me

of course @IvoFlipse, that is a given... (regarding the SE image)

just look at Jeff's blog posts
but the way we mess around in chat, I don't mind to have a similar air on the blog
it's supposed to be engaging for the community above all else

10:06 PM
well i can't write engaging but I'm gonna give it a shot

that's why we're a team!
if it doesn't work out, Bloodphilia or Matt will apply some secret sauce and make it enjoyable
but you'd help make their job easier

thank goodness for teams and restricted chat rooms ;P @IvoFlipse

10:26 PM
@IvoFlipse - draft complete
ignore the formatting, I want to format it more once I get it into Wordpress, with block quotes and such
too short?

You should try Windows Live Writer for formatting
btw there are good reasons to flash your bios AFAIK, when there's an update for instance

I've never done it and never want to
I should take out that last part...

first of all we should add more pictures
that's what Jeff told Joel too, so he put in a random picture of his dog :P

pictures?!
like what?
maybe of a PC booting or a photo of a BIOS
I'll find some stuff...

Area 51 is filling up with thousands of ideas for new Stack Exchange sites, and a pretty clear pattern has started to worry us: too many ridiculously niche proposals, overlapping proposals, and proposals that are already covered by an existing site.

Do we really need a site for each individual content management system?

The Stack Overflow experience taught us one thing pretty unequivocally: bigger is better. We didn’t make Java Overflow and .NET Overflow and Ruby Overflow, we made one big site for all programmers and told them to use tags and, lo and behold, it worked. Why? …

the BIOS chip
what BIOS looks like
what it's used for: OVERCLOCKING BABY!

10:30 PM
can I take photos from anywhere?
like Google search, or do we not want to do that?
overclocking? now you're out of my league

> (Jeff wants me to put pictures in my blog posts. This is my dog Taco. Taco has a bucket!)
I just google them yes
overclocking to make your computer run in overdrive

I know...but that's all i know :P
feel free to edit etc
I'm thinking of starting a draft at the blog now
and FYI, I can't get Windows Live apps to work, tried all kinds of stuff, that will have to wait until i reinstall Win7

it's no problem
but then it's probably easier to draft in Google Docs and have others move it to WP
the markdown is pretty painful in WP itself

I know...but how do I do block quotes and such? I'm gonna give it a try...
(trying in WP that is)
oh, plus images...will add those next

we do have to give it some more substance, else I feel like we're like one of those content farms :P
perhaps show the process of actually flashing a BIOS
add some more information about what it is, so that it's not just a nutshell
but it's a nice start @studiohack! so not to talk you down or anything :)
nice formatting too btw

10:46 PM
@IvoFlipse: that's what I know about it, and even now, I still don't understand it that much...but feel free to ad more, @KronoS, @IvoFlipse, @BloodPhilia...I'll add some more images and pass off to you guys, as I still have to work on my physics class...anything else, let me know...
and thanks @IvoFlipse, you're too kind :P

hehe, there's no pressure to get anything done right now :)
you've already been quite productive
plus I'm writing a meta post looking for more writers

good, we'll need more writers @IvoFlipse ...I'm happy to edit and proofread, writing on the other hand gives me a writer's block - I'm not super creative

hehe, that's hard to believe, just look at what you just wrote
especially if you have peers to ask for comments when you get stuck, anyone can overcome a writers block like that :)

I didn't write anything @IvoFlipse! and that is not creative :P

and it's great exercise too!
I often mix stuff together as well

10:51 PM
@IvoFlipse what? the typing? :D

besides, just read back how much you've said in here
surely you write stuff
no writing articles and such is a great exercise

oh for school, but I have so many problems with proper punctuation, its maddening
yeah, Jeff had a post about that a while back (excercise)

you should forget about grammar and punctuation, it just doesn't matter

I think it matters lol

it doesn't matter when you're writing something, it matters when you hand it out
or in :P

10:57 PM
:P lol @IvoFlipse
now looking for photos of the actually flashing
check this draft out @IvoFlipse:

that's already looking a lot more like a real article :)

great!

Q: The Super User blog is looking for writers!

Ivo FlipseAfter the blog got officially blessed by Jeff we've started to get some more attention on the blog. However, anyone with a keen eye might have spotted that it was mostly KronoS writing posts. So far most posts were about our Question of the Week, an extensive review of Kingston SSDs (thank you K...

I actually have to flash my own bios
though the last time it corrupted my windows install for some reason :S

11:15 PM
really @IvoFlipse?

yeah, but might be unrelated

perhaps you could write a follow-up on your personal experience?
or we could put the draft on hold and add it

I'd say we wait with the draft
have others look at it as well

yes, that's a good idea @IvoFlipse, it's fine by me if we don't publish it for a while...

well we should prevent that our questions of the week get posted weeks and weeks later then they were asked

11:18 PM
my question was asked a year ago, March 31 of '10
so I wouldn't worry about it @IvoFlipse :)

lol :P
not on Meta
I already had to defer the previous blog post
I don't want to make that into a habit

11:38 PM
@IvoFlipse what is going on with that question?! it has been deleted and migrated to oblivion lol you all gonna blame me for all the problems, since I'm the youngest mod of probably the entire SE? :P lol

It said you migrated it

yah I know... when I went to it today, it has been deleted and closed multiple times...ah well never mind

indeed, I've already forgotten about it :)

lol
this just reminds me that I need to be more careful and not so enthusiastic as a mod, it makes me a worse mod to be this eager :P

Wow you two have been chatty since I've been gone
Nice meta @IvoFlipse

11:49 PM
chatty @KronoS? lol

thanks for proof reading it @studiohack ;)

@IvoFlipse if we do fund a "PC" build how much are you planning on spending for that?

no problem @IvoFlipse, that's my job :)
@KronoS my bigger question is WHO gets the PC?

depends on how awesome the build will be

:P lol

11:52 PM
that depends on how awesome your testing will be

Well I can make a pretty ridiculous build...

else we could use it as a grand prize for our contest

And testing will be no prob as well...

I'd have to run it by Jeff, but there's no question that I will sponsor it, just how much :)

K well give me a budget... and I'll do what I can to be well under it, and try to get us sponsored...
I'm hoping NewEgg will help pitch in and maybe get us some discounts on the build it self, and then run a contest for some of our readers...
I'm also hoping that I can get EA on board and support us with a copy of Crysis or two to hand out to people

11:57 PM
we'd also have to check how it works with VAT and stuff
if SE bought it as their 'company' computer
btw if it's a gaming pc, we should check what ideas Gaming has for blog posts as well

@IvoFlipse I thought about that as well...
VAT @IvoFlipse

because it's a sizable chunk of the budget off course
are there any parts you wouldn't have to replace?
