@Jafe hehe I think that's N (not, as in NAND gate = NOT AND) + oodles (very much) for noodles ("udon?")

yup!
originally had ramen there but maybe that would have been too obvious

12:28 AM
CCCC: Unit in Dad's Land west-faces-about - that's crazy (4)

I in DLw* = wild?

@Jafe ye

12:43 AM
c4: Men decapitated in front of Dad's Army member – getting horrendous end in response to c4, perhaps? (2,7)
keeping a future archivist on their toes

1:12 AM
@Jafe oh wow

1:29 AM
this has gotta be EX PLOSION right

1:55 AM
@Jafe if a white pawn moves to c4 and a black pawn is at either b4 or d4 and it's black's turn, black can respond with an en passant move, which is incidentally also (-m)en + pa's + ant (army member, as an ant is a soldier) getting (horrendou)s

2:16 AM
(I still pronounce it [en] in my mind)

correct

oops i have to make another one

2:42 AM
@oAlt oh, nice (c2: @Jafe)

2:53 AM
hold on, still at work with this one

3:04 AM
nearly done

3:15 AM

😭😭

(jk take your time obviously)

@oAlt ***K U AL(A_)L U_ MP U_R (here, we have malaysian parliament)

@juicifer yes, correct :)

3:22 AM
nicely done
I'd even say it was worth the wait ;P

Haha thanks :) After I saw the "MP" there I challenged myself to make a clue out of it lol

hahah nice

CCCC: Proposin' to make percussion with flutes as a breakfasttime accompaniment? (6 5)

4:01 AM
@juicifer raisin toast = raisin' (proposin') + toast (to make percussion with flutes, where the flute here is a glass for wine perhaps and the percussion is the clinking of glasses)

absolutely right

fun fact: absolutely right means either 100% or -100% correct
TIL that meaning of 'flute'

@Jafe lol
CCCC: Butter's uttered for those that flutter (5)

4:22 AM
@oAlt is this geese ("ghee's")? (Though again they have different consonants at the end for me.)
(s in geese, z in ghee's)

Augh I keep forgetting lol
@msh210 yeah that's right

CCCC: Gator ends catch very well (5)

1 hour later…
5:44 AM
ha i always struggle with s/z, nice to not be the only one
sometimes i think my english pronunciation issues are pretty mild and then reality strikes unexpectedly
the other day i was trying to order tea in a cafe and the person taking the order just did not understand my pronunciation of the word "tea"
yes, the word tea... and yes, in the context of ordering a drink in a cafe
i repeated it 4 times and on the fourth said like "tea, it's, um, a hot drink in a cup..."

6:43 AM
@msh210 GREAT = G_R + EAT ?
(unsure about catch = eat; both kind of mean to surround in cryptic world)

6:59 AM
thats what i thought too. i guess caught by the mouth? lol
@Jafe :)

7:59 AM
@DanielS yeah
@DanielS yeah, that was precisely my intent

8:13 AM
CCCC: Character from identification number included in cryptographic secret. (6)

9:01 AM
@DanielS kidney (character/disposition, dated) = ID (identification) n (number) in key (cryptographic secret)?

9:44 AM
@oAlt Correct!

CCCC: Insect is not letting me escape (3)

@oAlt ANT = A(I)NT
Some lovely surfaces today

@DanielS Correct! (And yeah, I couldn't make the misdirection last longer ;) )
@DanielS (thx)

CCCC: For example, harmonic bit of music in a celestial sphere. (6)

10:17 AM
If "bit of music in" can be a homophony indicator, we have series ("Ceres"). But I doubt that's the intended solution.

@msh210 Lovely idea, but as you say not the intended solution.

10:49 AM
^ a blind guess is that "for example" doesn't look like the cryptic part, so im guessing "namely" for no particular reason

2 hours later…
1:21 PM
"namely" does have the M (bit of music) in there, but I can't make a celestial sphere out of "naely" so I disregarded it for now
And I guess it doesn't address the "harmonic" also
> in some music contexts, the terms "harmonic", "overtone" and "partial" are used fairly interchangeably.
none of those are even 6 letters long though

bit of music is M, in is IN, and a celestial sphere is ORB, making MINOR B harmonic scale... doesn't match the (6) though

1:40 PM
@Jafe and as we all know, "-100% right" is also known as "left"

hehe

2:04 PM
started working on a 100+ clue 3d cryptic... what the hell is wrong with me
4

brutal lol

1 hour later…
3:17 PM
would a 5x5x5 cube of just definitions of word be considered tedious or fun?

@DanielS motion (for example, harmonic, i.e. harmonic motion) = ti (note, hence bit of music) in moon (a celestial sphere)
@SnySmartie it would probably be fun with the right gimmicks
As to what those gimmicks are, I don't know yet. I don't have my puzzle-making cap on...

i think i have an idea

4:00 PM
@oAlt That's the one!

4:13 PM
CCCC: Do what Harry Styles did in Sign of the Times to be stylish (3)
(it's in the name after all)

@oAlt fly ddef

@juicifer yep

Q: Filling a 5x5x5 grid

Sny SmartieInspired by this. On each line to the left is the position of a word, and to the right is the "snyptic clue" not a cryptic clue (duh) for the word, along with the word's length. The 5x5x5 cube should be uniquely filled with letters. Maybe I'll add the specific rules as to how the position encodin...

Q: What should I call this poker hand with a straight?

AmozHmmm, looks like a good hand... I'm certain I can make a straight out of this! What should I call it? (6 2 8)

6:45 PM
@GentlePurpleRain spot on!

CCCC: Provoke strike (4)

2 hours later…
8:57 PM
@GentlePurpleRain is this whip or goad ddef? Both literally mean to hit someone/something, but figuratively mean to provoke someone.

@msh210 That was not what I had in mind.

or prod, likewise, actually

But now that I think about it, there are probably several words like that that could mean both things. But that is not what is going on here.
I guess that's a common problem with short clues and short enumerations.
C4 hint: It is a ddef, but it is not a literal/figurative duality as described by msh210.
I am unhappy with the lack of thought I put into possible alternate solutions to this clue. I probably could have selected words that would have minimized the potential for alternate answers.

Well, no. I mean, if it were a literal/figurative duality (to steal your words), that wouldn't be such a good clue. I wouldn't exactly call that an alternate solution: I mean it is, but it's a weaker one.
So I think you're fine, assuming your answer is a better one than those.

I hope so.
I guess you're right. If the figurative meaning derives from the literal meaning, then they're not really two separate definitions.

9:11 PM
Someone starting a team in Provo, Utah, should call it the Provo Cative.

@msh210 Unless, of course, Evo had already taken the name... :P

Or Vo, I guess.

...or Indi...

9:27 PM
there are teams called the kings in sacramento and los angeles, I think all four of those municipalities can share the cative name

As long as they're different sports, I guess.

didn't the cfl also have two teams called the roughriders and the rough riders for a long time

@juicifer huh, apparently so. (Saskatchewan and Ottawa, respectively.)
According to Wikipedia, "When the CFL was formed, they were allowed to keep their long-standing names; Ottawa was frequently known as the "Eastern Riders" while Saskatchewan was referred to as either the "Western Riders" or "Green Riders". On four occasions, the two teams met in the Grey Cup (1951, 1966, 1969, and 1976)…. The Riders vs. Riders matchups were often confusing for fans. Errors were occasionally made on the official scoreboard and commentators often got confused."

9:58 PM
Yep, I remember that. Before Ottawa changed their name to RedBlacks.
So I guess the Catives are a go for all four places!

10:50 PM
ugh... someone asked for attribution and then answered the question.
