12:00 AM
Gonna add my OpenSSL\bin first in the PATH environment variable.
Running pyOpenSSL-0.11\setup.py -q bdist_egg --dist-dir c:\users\tomwij\appdata\local\temp\easy_install-aj9gy0\pyOpenSSL-0.11\egg-dist-tmp-nk6qzp
warning: no previously-included files matching '*.pyc' found anywhere in distribution
error: Setup script exited with error: Unable to find vcvarsall.bat
Okay, that part has been fixed. :-/
Now make it find vcvarsall.bat, somehow...
I have 2010 but not supported, either install 2008 or install mingw32 and modify the compressed zip to run the setup with a different compiler set. :-/
90 MB download, oh, nice...
Yesterday was the best day of my life. Today is the worst day of my SSD's life.

@TomWij ! I admire your tenacity

Thanks.

:626232 You just know that once sorted, the next time you encounter this problem elsewhere it will take you 5 mins to fix it.

Looks like speedtest.net changed things around and added some new stuff
They have this new thing called a "speed wave"

12:15 AM
@Linker3000, depends, I'm now faced by an obscure stack trace, and as shown above, I don't want to jump in actual code to get this working...

which is basically where a bunch of people testing their network speed and comparing it against each other
so, i set one up for us
i appear to currently be winning with 94 down, 48 up

lol
I should be able to beat that, too bored to go through the stack trace anyway...

@nhinkle I've just taken an intense dislike to you ;-)
(4 down, 0.35 up)

@nhinkle you sicken me.... 93 MB download!

Local Speed Test
Last Result:
Download Speed: 95681 kbps (11960.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 4709 kbps (588.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 9 ms
Now I hope Speedtest is similar.

12:20 AM
Uni accounts should be disallowed!

wait are you wired @nhinkle ?

@KronoS yeah I'm working in one of the university computer labs at the moment
i never get speeds like that on WiFi

@nhinkle: I'm working at home, beat your university in terms of download and pretty close on the ping.
Upload is bad in Belgium.
Well, university account would get me a lower download but a higher upload.

@TomWij wow, you're a lucky man to have a connection like that at home

Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) (often pronounced ) is an international telecommunications standard that permits the addition of high-speed data transfer to an existing cable TV (CATV) system. It is employed by many cable television operators to provide Internet access (see cable Internet) over their existing hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) infrastructure. History DOCSIS was developed by CableLabs and contributing companies including ARRIS, BigBand Networks, Broadcom, Cisco, Conexant, Correlant, Harmonic, Intel, Motorola, Netgear, Terayon, and Texas Instruments. The ...
EuroDOCSIS 3.0 to be specific, uses parallel connections to speed up things a lot, don't know the exact details though...

12:22 AM
No cable in my village :-/

alright, I've got to go
@IvoFlipse, robot competition starts soon :)
i'll keep you posted on what happens

Just passed the connection limit, yay... xD

@nhinkle Good luck
Yeah, I've gotta go too. G'night everyone.

Ah, forgot result = {}.
And now it's looking for a basestd.h that's nowhere on my laptop, great...
This looks more like an error troubleshooting competition than an easy to solve error. :-/
Apparently in the Windows SDK.

12:58 AM
Oh, misread it, it says basetsd.h, not basestd.h... :/
> C:\OpenSSL-Win32\include\openssl/x509v3.h(577) : fatal error C1003: error count exceeds 100; stopping compilation
Enough for today, might be specific to Win32 as the compiler might try to compile in 64-bit mode so I'm going to try the OpenSSL 64-bit version tomorrow, althought that might mismatch with my 32-bit PyOpenSSL. :-/
Oh, there were exe's and msi's on and although for 32-bit XP they seem to install, I'm just going to guess these work and accept my SU question. If it doesn't I can always re-open later.
And mIRC still works... :-)

1:18 AM
Now, to clear out my mountain of articles saved in Instapaper :P

2 hours later…
3:40 AM
just had his info session with Microsoft and realizes... He's got a lot of reviewing to do!

2 hours later…
5:11 AM
Got my SU and SE stickers from the mod elections today (thanks @rchern)
Still not sure where to stick 'em though

5:30 AM
I'm still yet to get anything :( ( cc: @Rebecca )
hi @nhinkle

Postage to india probably takes a bit longer
how's it going @Sathya?

going good @nhinkle been busy ?

very much so, yes
haven't had as much time for answering questions
missed my chance on yours too, sadly :P
final exams are next week, after that I'll be out of internet range for 4 days (family trip), then have a bit more time

hehe :P

where should i put my SE stickers?!

5:40 AM
on a showcase :P @nhinkle

haha
i contemplated putting it on my laptop, but don't really like having stickers on it

me neither
both my laptops are sticker-free

mine has some butt-ugly security stickers on it
it's a thing the university does. not required, but highly recommended. they've had problems with laptop theft before, and apparently nobody with the tracking stickers has ever had their laptop stolen and not recovered

@nhinkle what kind of tracking ?

@Sathya the tags don't do any physical tracking themselves or contain RFID or anything. it's just a metal plate essentially epoxied on, which (supposedly) takes 800 lbs of force to remove and leaves a permanent "STOLEN PROPERTY" mark on the laptop if it is removed. it has a tracking number and a phone number to call to report it if found
that way, if somebody were to steal it, they essentially couldn't sell it, because it would have a big sticker or STOLEN mark on it

@nhinkle nice

i also have lojack installed (it was a free upgrade when i got my laptop), so there is software tracking too, but that's separate

okay
did you check out the pics of my Envy 14 disassembled ?

6:16 AM
http://stoptheft.com/site/pdf/downloads/download_7.pdf
pretty freakin ugly stickers, but that's sort of the point
i did see your pictures
it looked pretty gnarly :D
too bad there's no space for a second HDD though
did kingston just send you the SSD for free?

@nhinkle :D
@nhinkle oh no, they sent me in jan
actually they were to send me in December, I asked them to hold the shipment since I was heading back to India.
@nhinkle yep.. it was sent for free

how'd you pull that off? did you just tweet them like @KronoS did?

meh, I attributed to the wrong @nhinkle
what's your twitter handle @nhinkle ?
@nhinkle @KronoS learnt that from me :p

@Sathya it's @nrhinkle
extra r in there ;)

awcrap.

6:20 AM
what happened?

check my last tweet @nhinkle

ah cool, thanks for the mention :)
did you see my SU question in regards to that?

Q: What software works well for viewing massive TIFF images on Windows 7?

nhinkleToday I saw an article about a half-gig, 24000 square-pixel high-res composite image of the moon. (This is a much smaller version of the image) I find astronomy interesting, so I thought I'd download it and take a look. With 4GB of RAM and an i5 processor, I figured my computer could handle i...

oo nope.

(oh and you should repost that referencing the right "me" btw)

have you tried IrfanView ?

6:23 AM
hm no. i do have it installed, let me take a look
oooh, much better
my only gripe is that the multitouch pinch-to-zoom doesn't seem to work in irfanview
but other than that, perfect
post that as the answer and i'll accept it :)
well, i'll wait a day to see if anyone comes up with anything better, and then accept it

found another one for you
0
A: What software works well for viewing massive TIFF images on Windows 7?

SathyaI'd put my bet on IrfanView - it's probably one of the better & lighter image viewers. You can also try FastPictureViewer - I haven't tried it personally but it claims to have DirectX hardware acceleration.

nifty
imay check that out
any idea what he's talking about?
O_o

@nhinkle he's put in a suggested edit
one of your bullet points wasn't formatted right

ohhh. i see. somehow that didn't show up. weird. i just copied it directly from the original SO question, wasn't really paying much attention :P
thanks for fixing it

no problems @nhinkle :)

6:48 AM
@Sathya hmm maybe i need to tweet them then
i've been thinking it would be cool to install one of those optical drive replacement caddies that turns your optical drive bay into an HDD bay

@nhinkle a facebook friend recommended the same
problem is I can't do that for the envy

why not?

the optical drive is underneath the motherboard

ohhh right, envy has a slot-loaded one

15 hours ago, by Sathya
user image
the envy does have a slot for a secondary drive, but that's sealed & not user fix/replaceable

6:53 AM
no i meant the optical drive is slot-loaded, not a tray like my dm4
but that is interesting that it has a second drive

@nhinkle indeed

that's too bad they seal it

@nhinkle the envy 14 has options during customization - it's reasonable to assume that if the person opts for the second drive, perhaps it's not "sealed"
you can clearly see the sata & power connectors ( the white ones) in the above pic
look it's our hotshot editor @KronoS :p

i don't recall ever seeing an option for 2 drives when i was checking out the envy
but i might have overlooked it i suppose
key @KronoS

I had high hopes when I downloaded the manual
sadly the manual is dated :/

Q: How to telnet into facebook chat

OSX JediI was able to use facebook chat with an external application using the following information: First, find your Facebook username by going to http://www.facebook.com/your_user/. Next, Open iChat, then select iChat » Preferences and click on the Accounts tab. Click on the + (plus...

@nhinkle this is goes for your special close reason

7:06 AM
@Sathya I think it's more a situation of asking the wrong question
they want to learn about the xmpp protocol, but they asked how to use telnet to send xmpp snippets rather than asking how to go about observing and testing XMPP
i think my answer covers what they're actually trying to do fairly well

7:22 AM
Jan 27 at 4:01, by Sathya
looking at HP service guide, seems like I have a spare bay for a SSD. Need to disassemble and see for sure

7:40 AM
@nhinkle so how did the contest go?

@IvoFlipse it was an unmitigated disaster

darnit, how so?

our first round went excellently - we won by a large margin. in our second match though the robot somehow didn't follow the line at all from the start. we think it might not have been placed properly, because we had tested at least 10 times and never seen it do this before
sadly, because of that, we didn't get to go any further in the competition
at least we know that it performed perfectly all the other times :D
but yeah. sad day.
i'll upload pics and stuff later

that's too bad

darn @nhinkle

7:45 AM
perhaps we should built a bigger 'bad-ass' one

will be waiting for the pics though :)

there will be pics, yes

surely we can't call 'programming' your mindstorm bot, programming

not sure that i'll upload the video though, as it has people from my class in it, and i don't want to violate people's privacy
@IvoFlipse how is it not programming?

I'm trying to convince myself that's in the best interest of SU not SO :P

7:47 AM
ahhhh
well it's our idea, so.... yeah
even though questions about it would largely be off-topic on SU
we have to write a big report for my class. i think when we're done i'll anonymize the report a bit then upload it to my blag
report will have pictures and discussion of what we did and how it worked and how it didn't work
and a full copy of the program we made

nice :D
we should ask Wil and Linker to write a report 'from the trenches' :P

well, nice chatting with you all. i need to go. talk to ya later

talk to you later @nhinkle :)

'night ivo
bye @Sathya, @KronoS

1 hour later…
@IvoFlipse finally :p

@Sathya I'm tempted to close this on as too localized: superuser.com/questions/254699/…
if you 'fix' your problem by a driver update the same day, you probably shouldn't have asked it in the first place :P
though I guess it falls under the category 'easier' questions I'd love to see more

updated the BIOS o_0 not driver

ah, my bad :P
I have to think on how to handle this, but I talked about it with Robert and we want to come up with something to get extra attention for exemplary questions
perhaps exemplary isn't the right word, but if we spot a decent question that's about more basic computer problems, that we give it the best answer possible and perhaps even make it into a blog post

@IvoFlipse but then, what would be criteria for such a question
(btw, what's with the hardware subsidy thingy?)

9:07 AM
it's not for nothing that HowToGeek writes articles that target a larger audience
well obviously I won't be able to do that very often nor for buying an entire rig :P
as for the criteria, I'd make it a check like:
> Would your girl friend or parents ask such a question?
Then it's about the right level of difficulty :P
almost like a n00b question of the week, only in a respectful kind of way
Latest HTG article: How to Get Spelling Autocorrect Across All Applications on Your System?
that sounds like something interesting

@IvoFlipse indeed

Someone should ask that, just to point to his article :P

morning all

Hi @DMA57361
Everyone: flag this answer for spam: android.stackexchange.com/questions/6764/…

not a member on android... :/
whoa... good job on getting the blog official!

9:25 AM
well we should all thank Kronos off course
now, we need to get more contributors on board

I could, but I can't login to Android for now

too bad, they'll have to wait then :P

9:42 AM
@IvoFlipse What trench be that?

aren't you something of a sys admin?

Uh huh - I look after the IT for this lot....
That's my trench I suppose

well I'm sure you have some horror stories to share ;)
or you get to work with ridiculously cool/expensive hardware

That's what I found when I joined the company!

lol, what does it look like now?

9:46 AM
I'll have to do a before and next shot - but we haven't done that cabinet yet

though granted, it's perhaps a bit server faulty
but I'm sure there's lessons we SU's could learn
you don't want to know how my cable is managed right now

@Linker3000 oh, god.

Sure - I'll think of some more user-oriented examples that may be worth documenting
When we tidied another cabinet we found a shelf of comms kit (DSL modem and a hardware firewall) that had been disconnected about a year ago but left powered up and forgotten!

and I'm sure @TomWij has some 'interesting' experiences from his dad's store
or even your nvidia problem, with the sticker, that would be blog worthy
:O that's bad

@IvoFlipse: Dunno, might be because we got the laptop too early in the process...

9:49 AM
you should calculate the waste of power :P
still, it takes a Super User to fix it ;)

It's a barebone and we got it straight from the storage, so it might be reasonable that they still had to remove the sticker.

Current toy is a 16 core Proliant server with 24GB RAM attached to a 12TB disk array. Going to be virtualising a lot of stuff onto it.
We've tidied two racks and there's two to go... I hate knitting!

@ThomasMcDonald is the blog down? nvm!

(Jeez - I can't type today!)

@IvoFlipse I think I do, although I can't recall them easily... :-(
When I work there I mostly do virus PCs or simple tasks as I don't like waiting for other technicians if I need something and I don't know where it is...
SysInternals really speeds up the process of getting a computer to run without viruses which makes virus scanning itself more quick & easy.

9:55 AM
Perhaps just write a rant about how many viruses you find on some computers

Yeah, I'm interesting in writing something for the blog one of these days, still have to find something...
A post like seen on Mark's Blog based on a Super User would be awesome.
My computer just crashed BTW, but not the graphics issue.
My second processor (which I don't have, so I think it means one of the cores or something) waited too long for an interrupt.
I haven't had my laptop crash these last days for the graphics issue, wonder if it's because I gamed a bit less or my recent fix last week (changing the TDR settings in the registry a lot) helped.
It missed 19 clock ticks, what a joke... :-/
Oh, it's in hex, still, 25 clock ticks isn't much.
Crash dump points me at manictime.com, might be reasonable.

I have no idea what that means :P

Seems a driver made an interrupt, but ManicTime was doing an operation that took longer than the interrupt timeout, so it crashed on me...

ugh, is there a way to disregard windows explorer's separation of files & folders?

@Sathya: How do you mean?

10:08 AM
If I've sorted a folder as per date in Windows Explorer, it shows all files first & then folders
that's seriously hampering me/irritating me

Going to remove ManicTime, it's more likely to be used against me than useful to me, looking into the statistics it shows me things I know I did.
Wakoopa isn't that intrusive and fits as a solution for broader time ranges...
@Sathya: Hmm, I think, first sort by type so the folders are on top, then sort by date.
Oh, I see, weird...
Ah! Sort by Date (Modified) twice, that way newest things come at the bottom.

@TomWij love wakoopa, have it running all time
I want latest at top
right now,
it shows the latest files first and then the latest folders

Yeah, I think that it assumes more files than folders are created.
Gonna try something
No, I can't get it working.
dir does it right, so it must be possible...
@Sathya: Group By > Date Modified
Solves part of the problem... xD

@TomWij Yeah, better than before. thanks!

10:26 AM
@IvoFlipse: Got Scrapy to work. Don't know if OpenSSL works yet, but I think it should...

what does Scrapy do?

Scrape web pages, it's the most advanced library for Python that I could find.

with the goal of?
I wouldn't know what sites I would want to scrape
and off course, I wouldn't know what to do with it

why not Beautiful Soup @TomWij

Planning to scrape television information and the recordings/reminders that are planned, and then the ability to search for television shows and manipulate the recordings/reminders.
@Sathya: I need cookies working, I think Beautiful Soup only makes it easier to parse but doesn't do anything about cookies, right?

10:30 AM
don't ask me

I don't know about that either

You can say something like, go to this url and do something like:
hxs = HtmlXPathSelector(response)
        sites = hxs.select('//ul/li')
        for site in sites:
            title = site.select('a/text()').extract()
            link = site.select('a/@href').extract()
            desc = site.select('text()').extract()
            print title, link, desc
And that syntax is just XPath, for example, the page title would be /html/head/title.
You can create on response callbacks and go through a few pages easily and the spiders can return items or you can save it to a file.

10:57 AM
oy!
2
(:

@Sathya: Seems so:
> In callback functions, you parse the page contents, typically using XPath Selectors (but you can also use BeautifuSoup, lxml or whatever mechanism you prefer) and generate items with the parsed data.

11:15 AM
@nhinkle They arrived here too. :-)
5 Stack Exchange stickers
No Super User stickers, guess they either were out of stickers or forgot them, doesn't matter though, I visit multiple SE sites and I like the present. Thanks! @RebeccaChernoff

3 hours later…
2:33 PM
tempted to get one of these

someone is nuking them now

Q: Should OpenID clients accept adding WWW to the domain?

Steve ClayFor a long time I've used OpenID delegation on my site: http://example.org/ delegated to: http://example.openid-provider.com/, so I logged into OpenID-consuming sites using the former as ID. Recently I added www. to my site's canonical domain so http://example.org/ now redirects to http://www.e...

webapps, webmasters, or meta?

3:42 PM
@Kyle Not sure, he is asking the question from a user perspective :P

too late :P

Take no prisoners Ivo!

@IvoFlipse lol, I don't disagree, it's just that I can see why he put it there

ffs, I fear my logitech keyboard has some driver conflict with SP1

4:07 PM
@TomWij you didn't get SU stickers?

@RebeccaChernoff I got mine yesterday... THANK YOU!
already put his on his pc and laptop... to the dismay of his wife

Ben
hi

Hey everyone :D
Hi @Rebecca (:

Aha, @TomWij outsmarted our sophisticated system by linking to his SE profile instead of his SU profile. q: I'll see if I can't get you some SU stickers in the mail. (:

4:21 PM
PEOPLE HAD SU STICKERS?!?! D:

@BloodPhilia you should be getting some... it was for the runners for the mod elections I believe

@KronoS Oh okay

4:41 PM
Hi @RebeccaChernoff

@RebeccaChernoff None here yet :-( Will keep an eye on the post

You silly people that live over the pond and beyond. >_< If you would just move closer...

@RebeccaChernoff sure.... just get me there :P
btw I haven't received it either

@RebeccaChernoff I have an idea, sent them to me and @BloodPhilia and @TomWij can come pick them up when we have a local meetup :P

I'm only 8821 miles away from you :P @RebeccaChernoff

4:47 PM
US State side users need to do a meetup...

in both directions @Sathya :P

LOL :D

I'm sure there are smaller groups that could meetup if they wanted to @KronoS

@RebeccaChernoff Are you hiring then?

hmmm, meetups (:

4:48 PM
@IvoFlipse ya prob is organizing it....

Well that depends on where y'all are located off course :P

smiles thinking of upcoming plans

the Netherlands are so small, everyone would have to sit in a train for maximally 2 hours to meetup with any of the others (worst case)

@RebeccaChernoff KronoS is getting excited

@RebeccaChernoff actually if I were to organize a meetup, I would make it for all stackexchange users who want to come (those SO is a bit scary :P)

4:51 PM
Bah - it's national 'printer breakdown day' - three today!

but the more sites we get, the less of a user of one of the sites users seem to become
someone should check that stat :P
Me: "Cool, I'm almost to 100K followers." My wife: "Oh, so 1/10th as many followers as Charlie Sheen got in one day?" She keeps me grounded.

Well, there's critical mass to consider, and also does someone on cookingSE want to hang out with someone on drupalSE?

they don't have to come @RebeccaChernoff :P
off course you need people who want to hang out together
luckily SU and Gaming have quite some overlap ;)

People would probably be more likely to show up if they know the people going are targeted rather than just SE?

Coluld be a cool party with lots to discuss...

4:58 PM
targeted? @RebeccaChernoff?

lol You're in the middle, I'm above this :P

@IvoFlipse If they know the people there will all be from SO rather than from SO,SU,SF,Cooking,BCG,U&L,etc

right, but there's one problem: I don't know any Dutch SO users :P
so I would have to target a group I don't know myself

@IvoFlipse According to SEDE, there are at least 50 (:

5:07 PM
w00t though we can't play rock band 3 with 50+ users :P

howdy again all

pfffft first not enough and now too many?
make up yer mind!

I don't know enough, that's a difference @RebeccaChernoff :P
howdy @DMA57361
