I'm not quite here. My browser is still recovering from closing >2k tabs. :;
Hopefully you're joking, but I do keep a lot of tabs open as well. In about 3 windows.

@Ollie Nope, that was accurate. I went from about 3,800 tabs to a bit more than 1,500 in my primary profile. That doesn't count the four other profiles I currently had/have open or the other browser. :;
I end up cleaning up tabs from time to time, as I don't do that great of a job of making sure that I close all of the ones I used when investigating or working on something. There often seems to be just a little more that should be done, so I leave the tabs open, only to transition onto something that's become more important, and then the next thing, and the next, etc.
When closing a large number of tabs like that, it usually takes Firefox a bit of time to do housekeeping. I also often end up restarting the browser in order to start from a computationally clean state, but keeping the remaining tabs.

...
@Makyen That's a colossal number, for me. I rarely reach into a triple-digit number of tabs these days. I can't fathom finding my way around four figures. How on earth do you manage?

Firefox is running sooo smooth with just 600 tabs instead of 1000
in The 2nd Monitor, Feb 27, 2020 at 12:40, by skiwi
Firefox works perfectly with 2400 tabs open
They've been known to go over 4k.

4:11 PM
While Makyen is exceptional, their tab count is not.

Thanks. :)

@Ollie In Firefox, it does get a bit unwieldy at times, but there's a decent search function for open tabs and organizing into multiple windows helps considerably (and various features to organize tabs within a window, which used to be substantially better prior to cutting over to WebExtensions).
I wouldn't want to even attempt having a similar number of tabs in Chrome, as Chrome doesn't handle a large number of tabs in a window well (tabs become inaccessible form the tab bar after a certain point) and Chrome tends to have even background tabs be serious memory hogs. I do have some Chrome profiles which use a substantial number of tabs, but it's quite a pain to run into the UI issues with too many tabs per window.

4:22 PM
@Ollie that's what the Chrome tabs are for
And yeah, I try to keep the truly massive numbers in Firefox due to what Makyen said with Chrome handling it badly.
unfortunately, Firefox's JS execution speed is just a bit slower and so I have to use Chrome for moderating
It's not enough slower to make a real difference in normal browsing, but when you're running 20+ userscripts on a single page...it tends to either break the rendering process or become really, really slow.
@Mast The trick is to restart the browser whenever you need background tabs killed. I believe there are extensions that do this, but it also works well to run Firefox Nightly and just hit the update button whenever you need your RAM back... :-)

@Mast Yeah, I've had the number of open tabs up in that range. For me, Firefox can start to get a bit bogged down after 3.5k, or so. That is, however, likely to be that it starts running into system limitations (memory/CPU) as non-active tabs continue to consume resources. This can particularly be a problem if you use browser extensions which don't behave well (e.g. that use considerable resources per tab and/or have performance hogs/memory leaks; an example of such a misbehaved extension would be one extension I looked at for answering an SO question where the extension loaded 67 different content scripts into every tab.).
I haven't intentionally tried to stress test Firefox with a huge number of tabs, but the usability limit is very dependent on the availability of CPU and RAM, which is, of course, not surprising.
