i have discovered that some newish update to steam has made it so that you cannot cancel verifying a games files
it used to be a separate window the the verification check that had a cancel button
now its just this and its stuck at 0%

1:09 AM
i have spent the last 3 days trying to get this one fucking steam game to work, with little to no success
I am now attempting to move this 78 GB game to my C: drive, which only has 85ish GB of free space, in the hopes that this might fix something

the game starts up fine, but then i need to sign into my xbox live account, and the window that pops up for that a completely empty white window

seriously fuck glitter

no, I don't think I will
because then it'd get all over places it shouldn't be

@lyxal Can't get pure helium for it

what?
bruh stop overthinking it

Bad joke, nvm

just grab a frying pan you dumbnut

Good idea

or use a wall or something idk
no need to get all chemistry on me when physics works just fine
smh

1:44 PM
No, I'm too thick-headed for that
@lyxal bruh chemistry is just physics
Except really really complicated
Hmm I could try walking into a college bus
Get my tuition forgiven

I hear that's the new american dream

Yeah

at least, that's what the top post on r/2irl4meirl says

Dying with less than a few millino dollars of debt
@lyxal Hadn't heard of that sub before

it's 2meirl4meirl
missed 2 letters lol

1:46 PM
Is it cringe twitter reposts like meirl?
Oh ok
2meirl4meirl has decent content
2meirl42meirl4meirl is...mmmm

I'd move this conversation to Off-Topic TNB but my RO powers don't exactly extend to these parts of Chat lol
because this isn't exactly Scala

@lyxal tbh it's noot that new

yeah, the meme I was talking about was posted 2 years ago lol :p

@user Wait no it's filled with super depressing posts
When did this happen

> For relatable posts that are too real for /r/meirl or /r/me_irl. Meaning jokes/posts about mental health issues and self deprecating humour.
I would assume since all time

1:52 PM
lol I guess I just didn't notice before
Yeah if you ignore the suicidal posts the rest are funny

pretty much

now we need 2meirl4meirlbutnotmeirlenough42meirl4meirl

ngl the depressing posts are also kinda funny
@thejonymyster /s/butnotmeirlenough/nottoomeirl

one sub i want to make i havent gotten around to is r/thereisadeadlypoisonousspideratthebottomofthissub
and as you scroll down people are increasingly more afraid of the first post

I can't find it

just a reminder that subreddit names have a max char limit of 20
continue with your regularly scheduled jokes

Aww

my favourite sub is r/vyxal

@lyxal OTL im done for...

1:59 PM
@lyxal There's literally nothing there

@user wdym it's really great and populated and totally wasn't made just now by me for a quick and cheap joke here

thats a little surprising actually

(disclaimer: I made it a few minutes ago for a quick and cheap joke here)

that too is surprising
no uh, id expect there to be a vyxal sub

really?
wow

2:02 PM
... well, now there is, so i was right, retroactively?

probably :p
it's just that with the context of only having recently made a discord server for the language, a subreddit would be relatively not feasible

i mean as one of the most popular programming languages out there, youd expect...

*esolangs
there's barely any esolang users on reddit
doesn't make sense to have a subreddit except for the lols

there SHOULD be esolang users on reddit. OR else !
sorry im so bored at work

@thejonymyster Even the most popular esolangs don't have those many users. Esolangs are, well, esoteric

2:03 PM

they started actually paying attention to my productivity so i cant slack off as much
:P

I'm sorry how tf is there 31 people on the subreddit?

what sub?

r/vyxal obviously

holy hell
they were just waiting patiently

2:05 PM
Bots?

I think the counter is a little broken :p

for you to make it

@user maybe.
Could be new sub caching bots
@thejonymyster would you like me to send memes to ease the pain?
because rustles through meme stash I've got funny stuff that should make things bearable
that's a sample of my collection
tell me if you require more

2:46 PM
lmao
thank u

3:37 PM
@lyxal idk about thejonymyster but I would like some

4:35 PM
Ah, YT comments. Was in a discussion about the master vs. main thing, where I commented that main's a more clear description in the first place and that even if it on;y makes a single person uncomfortable, it takes five minutes to switch for future projects so why not, and I get this gem:
> can you explain how the word 'master', without any context whatsoever is a racial slur? If you think about this for more than a few seconds I think you'll answer your own
Hey everyone, here's today's news digest: 3f198e976b3b64d65202f34d245de717a766db576a2c7d8d73e434c1

Gross, use printf
Gross, use printf
Sure is convenient how SE never lets you send the same messages twice except when you don't want to >:|

printf %s news | sha224sum?

printf 'news' | sha224sum

you shouldn't pass user input to the first argument of printf

4:44 PM
It's not user input it's Radvylf input

hmm.

Like, that's like saying I shouldn't use REPLs because I could type in arbitrary code, and running arbitrary code is dangerous :p

The only thing you need to know about master vs. main is that main is shorter. That's it. No point in discussing it further

I'm just in the instinctive mindset that you should only ever put a format specification, and never anything resembling data, as the first argument of printf
not that it even really matters in shell like it does in C

Well my formal specification is that the user input will be formatted like the string news :p

4:51 PM
Well, today's news digest is echo -n news | sha224sum, but maybe tomorrow's news digest is echo -n NEWS | sha224sum

SHA-224 doesn't get enough attention, its big brother with the fancy power-of-two steals all its fame.
Yeah, my reasoning is that "main" is more descriptive than "master" (what's it in charge of?), more concise, and more consistent with other stuff. It's just a bonus that some people dislike "master" due to the master/slave terminology thing.
(But of course even suggesting that that last one's a valid factor to take into consideration results in far more impassioned rants against "the SJWs" and "snowflakes" than is at all reasonable)

I leave for 2 hours and yall are making jokes about digesting news

do you need a minute to digest that?

*rimshot*
you might say I made a hash of things
or is that too cryptic of a joke for you?

@RadvylfPrograms your first mistake was trying to have a meaningful discussion in a youtube comments section

Yeah...

even ignoring historical context, main literally just makes more sense to me lol
so even if literally zero people in the entire world were uncomfortable with it I'd still switch to main
youtube comments are not a place for logical discussions though; i think only twitter is worse :P

Yeah I've had lots of...fun poltiics-tangential discussions on YT lol

i only really have somewhat politically related discussions either on se chat or in private discord channels/group dms cuz I don't really have any interest in intellectual discussions in places like yt anymore lol
ever since I stopped using Quora I decided it's really just not worth the time to attempt

The halting problem was solved on 2041 by Prof. James Jameson, who had devoted most of his life to the problem. As it happens, the solution was a small lizard Jameson found in his yard one day. The lizard would only eat paper, and specifically only paper that had a halting program written upon it.

Dispatches from an Alternate Universe #002

To demonstrate this, Jameson presented the lizard with a piece of paper upon which he had written while (1) {} The lizard looked at the camera with an expression of unamusement. Jameson then took the paper, and between the braces wrote break;. The lizard lept up and devoured the paper from his hands.

If that lizard existed it would break every cryptographic protocol, solve every open mathematical question, and quite possibly save billions of lives. Hopefully nobody steps on it.
I ehar the NSA has a special pair of spiky boots on hand in case it ever shows up.

did you just write that now?

@Ginger me?

8:29 PM
yes

Yeah, my brain gets a lil loopy after a long day of crying over other peoples' code

wow

You're rather easily impressed lol

Oh crap I accidentally said on 2041 instead of in 2041

I am

8:30 PM
@RadvylfPrograms Hey give em a break, maybe they can't afford imagination :D

We all have imagination lizards, maybe Ginger's ran away

I have a Ginger Technologies GT114 Humor Processing Card
is that good enough?

my imagination lizard evolved into an imagination dragon, then got fat and lazy and started making bad music instead

My imagination lizard keeps getting fed JS and PHP and it sometimes goes missing and comes back with a long beard and a moderately good shitpost carved into the wall of a cave

8:32 PM
When questioned about how this lizard could possibly know whether a program halts or not, Jameson gave a shrug. "Magic, I guess."

my imagination lizard keeps poisoning my imagination spock

my imagination lizard moves backwards in time and exists in 4 dimensions of space

What if you gave it a program that connected to a camera, watched the lizard, and infinitely looped until the lizard declared that the program it was given would eventually halt.
Or worse, waited until it decided the program would go on forever

Unfortunately, two days later, Prof. Jameson snapped and killed the lizard. He was arrested by authorities and seen being dragged away screaming that his whole life was a waste and that science is a lie. He died of unknown causes whilst awaiting trial

@RadvylfPrograms The lizard would explode.

8:35 PM
Well I guess we'll never know thanks to that asshat Jameson

lizard emulation when

@RadvylfPrograms The lizard actually considers all programs it looks at to run within a sandbox, so the paper would also have to define the camera, at which point it's no longer a real camera, just one on paper
and therefore can't look at the very real lizard

The lizard was actually the ghost of Alan Turing in Narnia, and he just thinks really quickly and writes it down, and since the time is weird in Narnia it seems instant

@Mayube but if the paper defines the lizard the camera is looking at, then that lizard has to be looking at a piece of paper with the same program, and that paper has to define its lizard, and etc etc ad absurdium

@des54321 the lizard has a finite stomach
also the lizard is not a computer, nor a piece of code, so if the paper defined the lizard it would no longer be a program
and therefore the lizard wouldn't eat it

8:40 PM
What if the code is a polyglot

what on earth is going on here

@RadvylfPrograms the lizard only knows D
but by 2041 D has incorporated a rust-like borrow checker and become the defacto language for all types of development.

bold of you to assume that Y2K38 won't have ended civilization by then

@Ginger Society banded together and sacrificed Linus Torvalds to the Unix gods in 2035, and they gave us 400 extra years

8:48 PM
wow

Nah everyone just started using floats for the time. In a few million years seconds will start to pass slightly faster.

When asked what we plan to do in 2438, world leader Jake Paul shrugged and said "Iunno about you but I plan to be dead by then" before sticking out his tongue at the gathered press and shotgunning a white claw

the year is 2041. the Stack Exchange network is long dead. chat.stackexchange.com is still online, kept alive by a coalition of TNB users running a custom backend.

having rewritten it in D

the nation of Python is under constant attack from armies of D users seeking to steal their tabs and brackets to fuel their Doomsday D-vice

8:54 PM
@Mayube lmao that would actually be not bad
D is cool
Also, this is getting kinda off-topic, wanna move it?

@Ginger This is made worse by the colonies on Phobos revolting

@thejonymyster i don't think it would accumulate more arrows--all of the double-moved questions above it only have one arrow, and it only has two because the second arrow is just part of the message (since it was not itself ever moved)

Wake up babe, possible new AP exams just dropped:
First one makes sense, AP version of another common science class, second one would be super cool, third one would be neat too (but would probably lead to a literal riot if it was added in my school district), and last one's a really interesting possibility

9:44 PM
huh was AP precalc not already a thing?

why would it have been

ah yeah I'm probably thinking of my states standardized precalc exam

10:16 PM
making a lang cause the last one i made was too bad
this time everything is an array which is good because that makes it apl basically
numbers are also an array
