@Tacoタコス do you already know what a cryptic clue is?

now my newly cryptic'ed brain tells me in scotland means part of the word is in the word scotland...

@bobble I read the post on it, but I'm gonna re-read it. I'm not comfortable enough with my understanding to participate yet :)

Does anyone mind telling me if clicking the "Liftoff!" button on my latest project (link incoming) autoplays the embedded YT video that comes up? WARNING: Turn your volume down some if needed, it's music. After about 27 seconds of play time there should be lyrics updating on the screen.

@Stevo Yes

I think the autoplay is busted.

Easy if you know my first C4

@Stevo It was: Google flap let medicine (6)
Double cryptic!

@Anonymus25 im not undestanding :)

3:52 AM
now, lets do an enigmatic tag wiki...

4:04 AM
wait
i just reviewed a question
now the question is gone...
What is an enigmatic puzzle?
An enigmatic puzzle is a puzzle where the genre or solving strategy is not explicitly stated. These types of puzzles make the puzzler deduce what type of puzzle it is, before going on to solve it.
thats part 1 of the tag wiki
any other suggestions?
@MOehm hi! I've been doing some tag wiki editing, after this post. What do you think of it?

@Avi Just to make it "official": Yep, that's it.

4:24 AM
Now, after some editing, it comes out like this (for the tag wiki)
What is an enigmatic puzzle?
An enigmatic puzzle is a puzzle where the genre or solving strategy is not explicitly stated. The puzzler's first task in the puzzle, which is a non-trivial puzzle in itself, is to work out what sort of thing they have to do to start. Everything you solve leads to another thing, and another leads to another, and gradually the whole truth emerges.
Any other suggestions? @MOehm (sorry but you are the only one here)

I don't think that "enigmatic puzzle" means that the puzzle has "stages", where the answer of one or more stages leads to something else until one arrives at the final answer. Such puzzles are usually calles metapuzzles and ther's already a tag for that. An enigmatic puzzle is simply one that hides its nature.

hmmm
i was thinking
nope...
i was thinking wrong
well, lets change that
An enigmatic puzzle is a puzzle where the genre or solving strategy is not explicitly stated. The puzzler's first task in the puzzle, which is a non-trivial puzzle in itself, is to work out what sort of thing they have to do to start.
is that better?
I have edited in the community wiki
now

I generally don't participate in the "gardening" tasks such as tag maintenance here at PSE. I'm usually fine with what the people who do that decide and try not to get in their way. I wrote my longer musings on the enigmatic puzzle tag two or three days ago, because I thought that some people here misunderstood what the enigmatic-puzzle tag was about. I still think it doesn't need re-wikiing and that most people here use it correctly.
So to cut a long story short: I'm not really interested in that (non-)issue. I come here only for the cryptic clues :)

4:39 AM
@MOehm ok :)
speaking of cryptic clues...
Im gonna try make one

Avi
@Tacoタコス seems to work fine
@Stevo that's actually COLES* + (-d)ANIEL - careful!
or COLES*+D, with the last letter being cut off
which is COLES* 😅

Q: Could use some help solving a puzzle?

King Of GamesI've been trying to decode this sentence for a while and haven't had much luck, so I hoped some smarter minds might have some ideas. Unfortunately it's a pretty short string of words so there's not a whole lot to work with, it's supposed to solve down to the password to open a Zip Folder but that...

9:24 AM
@Stevo nice!
@Stevo I know - but the daniel's head being cut off is where the error comes from
the anagram of coles is fine

Q: Train Tracks: is there a unique solution?

quilkinIn the last year or so a puzzle has been appearing in 'The Guardian' (a UK newspaper). It looks like this: and the instructions are as follows: Lay tracks to enable the train to travel from village A to village B. The numbers indicate how many sections of rail go in each row and column. There a...

Q: Three-player Nim

FajarSuppose I'm forced to enter the game of nim with two players who are perfectly logical people. The rules is simple: We play a set number of rounds. In every round, a random number of marbles (between 25-40) are put inside the box, but the container of the box will always be visible during the du...

12:24 PM
@MOehm I'm still trying to solve this, and despite assuming your reply has an answer that matches mine, I've not been able to.
FWIW I used litscape to find words containing ASPNETMVC, and then manually removed those to find what is left to clue
@Jafe great minds think alike, but fools seldom differ...

Yeah, that one has the same answer as yours. Do you want to know the construction?

firm politician is the CO+MP...

@MOehm please, lest I get nothing done at work at all today

Okay, so don't get anything done at work and now its my fault? :>

@MOehm Have you heard of nerdsnipping?

12:39 PM
Anyway, it's CO (firm, company) + MP (politician) + (TAUT)* + I(n)VE(r)NESS, where the RN (Royal navy) are missing separately.

ah man i was trying ABE(r)DEE(n) the whole time
no wonder it got nowhere

@MOehm thank you kindly
@Jafe I got as far as edinburgh and glasgow, realised neithr of those have a R and an N, and gave up (mentally and physically :p )

hehe
if only you had re-checked edinburgh
speaking of scotland, i have no idea what to do with that part in the current c4

Well, I have no idea what to do with the whole C4.

@Jafe I have a sinking feeling I have the def but not the word play (for the records, I have never a C4 from guessing the def and working backwards to get the wordplay, so it's not looking good)

12:44 PM
But I thought that Scotland might be ALBA.

@MOehm that's the Gaelic Scots word for England though

Isn't it the Scots word for, em, Scotland?

huh, i thought alba was scotland too

@MOehm more or less?

As in Banca na h-Alba.

Q: Don't know what to call this crossword

Jafe I seem to have forgotten the name of this puzzle. The only thing I do remember is that every answer is different. Can you find out what it's called? Why do you think that name is appropriate? Across 7. Expedition is coming back, having toured region in the east of Africa (6) 12. Like a president...

^Speaking of nerd sniping ...

*headshot*

"Supply" could be an anagram indicator, but I think it should come after the fodder. And anagramming A is a bit pointless.

@MOehm ah no I was wrong
> Some scholars point out that the name "Scotland" is ultimately derived from Scotia, a Latin term first used for Ireland (also called Hibernia by the Romans) and later for Scotland, the Scoti peoples having originated in Ireland and resettled in Scotland.[note 2] Another, post-conquest, Roman name for the island of Great Britain was Albion, which is cognate with the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland: Alba.
I got myself tripped up there
btw, the other name for Scotland is Caledonia

so nova scotia and new caledonia are pretty much the same thing

12:57 PM
@Jafe basically

Great Scott!
I wouldn't want to rely on that when packing for a trip.

or applying for a visa
"look, officer, etymologically speaking..."

> There's that word again, dissinkins, why are you looking for dissinkins? IS there something wrong with your cryptic indicators in the future?

Afk for a bit. See you later.

1:17 PM
@MOehm COLLAPSING: COLL ASP* IN + G (missing from sinkin', but returns if said 'slowly')

@AncientSwordRage Wouldn't that be using an indirect anagram?

@Stiv true...
Wiki tells me it could also be Aircraft Parts store

Q: A new way to cut a pizza

Dmitry KamenetskyCan you cut a pizza (circle) into 12 identical pieces, such that half of them have crust (circle boundary), while the other half do not? The pieces must have the same shape and area.

1:57 PM
@AncientSwordRage not my intention, I'm afraid

@msh210 no worries, I was thinking it might be callback to ASP.net...

Callback :-)

hah
just seen that

Q: How can I create a programmatic solution to a formation of numbers problem?

Luka JurkićSo I'm trying to write a program (in C or C++ if possible) for one mathematical trick question. When you enter a number, the program gives you a combination of mathematical operators applied to numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 such that the result is the entered number. For example, if you enter 0, the code re...

Nice solve @Stiv

@oAlt Thanks - that was a very enjoyable one @Jafe - loved the twist when it arose!

Being a native of the country mentioned in 26A still didn't give me an advantage (I worked out the bottom half first, and that clue was the remaining unsolved one) :P
Oh, of course it was that island, gosh darn it :P

2:47 PM
Some of jafe's clues this time around were sheer genius. Not that they're not normally great, but some of the creativity in the definition parts of clues (e.g., 26A) is a whole new level.

I particularly enjoyed 37D - using 'AA' to mean 'aces' was inspired!

There are lots of other praises that can be given for the crossword, but one I'll give is that I loved the definition for 39D - it's a very 19D definition, if you will :P

3:12 PM
could the def for C4 be a word that means "(to) sink in slowly" ?

Not really. But it could be A (supply (depot (in Scotland))) and end in IN, I think, where the last part is a shortened participle of a word meaning "to sink slowly". Or msh210 is pulling an evil trick and it is (sink) in (slowly).

@MOehm why couldn't it be 'sink in slowly'? we're just playing with the word spaces (sinkin' -> sink in)
as for '(sink) in (slowly)' I couldn't find anything that would fit

Oh, didn't see your "in". Yeah, could be, then.

You can almost make ANTIPODEAN with A + DEPOTIN* (anagrind being 'in a supple manner', i.e. supply) + AN (though no indication I can spot for this from 'Scotland', other than the wonderful Ben A'an). Unfortunately, this is in no way that I can see defined by 'sinkin' slowly', so it's all for nothing! :)

I think "supply" as anagrind really only works after the fodder.

3:34 PM
@MOehm and then it could basin or something?

My thoughts are all revolving around Scottish localities that end in 'INE' or 'IN', like DUNFERMLINE (11 letters, so not what we seek), which can sound like a word meaning "sinking slowly" that usually ends in a G but is skipped because of the whole sinkin' thing...

Yes, words ending in IN look promising. BASIN in GRAVE / LARGO / LENTO doesn't yield anything useful.

@MOehm I'm playing with DE-BASIN-GLY and not getting anything to fit

MAGAZINE doesn't quite end in -IN, but it can be a depot.

@MOehm true
something that keeps tugging at me is interpretting depot as de-pot as in either remove from a pot, subtract the word pot from a synonym of supply

Q: A church-y riddle

QamiI'm a pair of two words, and the kind of mistake One singing a hymn might frequently make One is a place; one, a kind of battalion Our Lord died on a cross, and not on a stallion (what/who am I?)

Gosh, Merriam Webster has synonyms for "sinking abruptly", but not "sinking slowly" lol

4:41 PM
The best I can do is &lit of: ALB(MESS)A<(sinkin') + GE (???) = ASSEMBLAGE (also literally 'A Supply Depot')
my only hope is that GE has some other meaning that gets you slowly
where 'mess' cryptically means (food) supply depot

Avi
5:04 PM
@AncientSwordRage Makes me imagine an old grandpa yelling "Hey! Stay off my lawn!" but actually they're afraid of the kids discovering their secret depot of pot and de-potting the pot...

@AncientSwordRage I mean General Electric is an energy supplier?
@Avi hehe

5:31 PM
I don't think I mean &lit. above
I could get GE if I "SINK (the letters) IN(side) GRAVE(slowly)" but that feels like I'm clutching at straws
(somebody put me out of my misery here)

2 hours later…
Avi
7:48 PM
"descending" is 10 letters
but not seeing any wordplay connections
submersing is also 10
moderately is also 10
w(holes)ales???
if wales had holes inside it'd be sinking slowly???

not even sure that wholesales are supply depot(s)
