Nov 1 '19 at 21:05, by Makyen
The one that has been active the most over the last while is the one we will normally prefer stays running. The reason for that is that there is some state information which is specific to each instance (e.g. user-blacklist; notify list; recently reported post list; user-whitelist; etc). We generally want to keep the instance active which has the larger amount of recent information.
(Others have better ways of saying it)

@JeffSchaller ah, so it's the one you have to restart from time to time? So does someone do that for the Tavern each time or does the Tavern get special treatment?

@JeffSchaller As I read that, it notifies a specific user?
(for context, we were considering getting Smokey to post reports of spam on CGCC into TNB (the main CGCC room), to alert the entire room, rather than a specific user)

I know Smokey can do what I'm talking about... several mods have it set up for their chat rooms and the Tavern on MSE gets notifications, too.

@Catija Tavern does get special treatment. charcoal-se.org/smokey/… It can be set up so that specific users are notified, or that reports are sent to specific rooms. They're orthogonal though. as far as I'm aware.
@cairdcoinheringaahing Yes, that can be done. There are instructions here. You can ping an admin and ask for that, or make a PR yourself (which involves updating the rooms.yml file I think), which will be faster.

@cigien Thanks, I'll take a proper look later. I'll need to talk to the other users in the room before allowing SD first tho, we're pretty anti-bot in TNB :)

@cairdcoinheringaahing Of course. In fact, I think an RO for the room you want messages posted to has to sign off.

1:54 AM
I am an RO, but I wouldn't want to do it unilaterally

Ah, I see.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad ns for domain in body (1): PulseAudio has no sound, only has Dummy Output ✏️ by Criwran on askubuntu.com

@cairdcoinheringaahing yes, although Makyen took pity on me and rotated the active SD instances while I pasted the "notify" command to each one. That way, I was covered ... at least for failovers between those instances.

How many instances are there? 3?

2:05 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing right; there's also a room one; I set one up with Makyen's help.

!!/notify 96491 unix.stackexchange.com
Darn it, I messed up the reply meant for Catija and sent it to cairdcoinheringaahing; sorry to you both!

So EC2, Lily and Osiris?
Or, how active are the "hidden" instances?

Yes, looks like 3. Also, I'm a bit wrong. The notifications I set up do ping me in particular, in that room, so cigien has it right.

How quickly does SD post (by default, rather than the delay the Tavern etc.) after it identifies a potential spam post?
Rather, after a post is posted, what's the normal amount of time between posting and SD reporting it?

Within seconds, I'd say? I can't say for sure. I haven't heard anyone say there's an intentional delay.

DW, I don;t need an exact number, "a few seconds" is great :) Just trying to get as much info as a I can so that I'm fully informed before I post the suggestion to my chat room :)

2:19 AM
I think there's also a threshold of spamminess that the post has to meet; low level spam alerts don't get sent out. (Gah, mobile)

Yeah, I'd imagine that there's a certain minimum weight that needs to be met before getting more eyes on the post (I'm more than familiar with the problems of mobile :P)

Maybe there's a difference for the whole-room type (that I'm less familiar with)

(cc @Makyen I know you're more knowledgeable about SD, feel free to correct/answer anything we've said)
(or anyone else for that matter :P)

I have such a short memory :)

@JeffSchaller Kind of. That pings me specifically for any CGCC spam, posted by SD here. I'm looking into getting SD to post CGCC spam into TNB (looking into, still got to ask the residents there fore their approval), that doesn't ping anyone specifically

Perfect; then cigien's got the answer, I think. I will bow out -- actually heading offline for a couple days. Good luck with the setup!

Question: could it be configured to do only answers?

^

@hyper-neutrino That would be possible, but would require adding code. The option to do that does not currently exist.

2:45 AM
ah, okay, thanks. it's not really too big of a deal if it does post questions - we already have a bot that does that (and oneboxes it) and an RO usually throws out the message anyway, so it isn't a hassle to add the smokey message in with the trash

That said, if it isn't significant effort (I'd be happy to give it a shot), configuring it to only post answers would be a benefit

@Catija The rooms.yml file allows telling SD to post reports into specified chat rooms. The posts reported into the specified room can be limited to a specific site or sites, or all sites except for a specific site or sites. Reports are typically also limited to posts which are detected by at least one non-"experimental" detection ("experimental" here means a list of detection reasons that tend to be less reliable at detecting only true positive posts; a complete list is available).
Reports into the specified room can also be limited to those reports which include detection reasons other than an explicitly specified reason or reasons.
