Q: Are there any fantasy novels without any major conflict?

andypeaWhen reading a fantasy novel I enjoy the chapters focusing on "normal" life in the fantastical world much more than chapters focusing on a quest to defeat some existential threat. For example: I enjoyed the first part of "The Wheel of Time" when the main characters are living life in the village...

@Aww_Geez the author of The Courtship of Princess Leia was a friend of my mother. He was flown to Skywalker Ranch and interviewed with Lucas over his book plot. Incredible, considering how bad that novel was.
Although it created the planet Dathomir.

Q: Making the moon red? Physics please!

Mitch I am writing a science-fiction/fantasy novel and I've come to a sci-fiesque part in my story where I am entertaining several options for a scene, one of which could involve some pretty serious science. The short version is, my planet has two moons, there is a ritual on the planet that involves on...

Q: How old was Thanos when Thor chopped his head off?

user931I am obviously talking about Infinity War Thanos who died in the beginning of Endgame. How old was he when he died? I am seeing all over the internet that he was thousands of years old, but I don't see any proper citation. I saw his earliest footage when he was conquering Gamora's planet, but tha...

Q: How does the director know the TELL anymore after sending back a traveler?

HothieI realized that I have a logical/consistency problem, even with the most basic premise of travelers. In my understanding sending back a traveler works this way: From "historical records" the director learns about a person who died at an exactly documented location and time and that the circumsta...

@JackBNimble is that good?

@Randal'Thor For this particular user I don't think it matters but in general I agree

@TheLethalCarrot I think there's no harm in applying the general case, as well as seeing if it helps specifically

No harm in doing so, just stating I don't think it really matters there

Q: How does Milla's blaster get re-charged?

DVK-on-Ahch-ToWe see in one of the chapters that it is super energy intensive (taking an output of an entire Russian nuclear power plant) to charge her flight suit. However, her blaster (able to melt and destroy Troll medium mechs and chassis) clearly requires a lot of energy, and she expended a lot of it on d...

Q: Are there efforts to retrieve any future tech from the Atlantic?

DVK-on-Ahch-ToA LOT of future technology splashed into the Atlantic during Colonel Leonovna's and CTF's fight with the Trolls and Kanga tender. Some (like the tender) are probably vaporized by nukes. But some is likely to still be salvageable - Terran fighter was destroyed but not vaporized (never mind the saf...

Q: What are the differences between the lives of book Aragorn and movie Aragorn?

just_happen_to_knowI started to wonder about the differences between the two versions of Aragorn because of this line from the movie: Gandalf : There is one who could unite them. The Mandalorian series has little tidbits of Kevin Jeter's "Bounty Hunter Wars" trilogy, and it was actually a post asking about where the Slave I had been that had me thinking whether or not Lucas signed off on the EU books. But, alas, even if Lucas HAD verified that it was canon, Disney no longer respects that agreement. But, for the record, I believe Fett was in position of Bossk's ship (Hound's Tooth) during his short stay at Jabba's palace, if memory serves?

Q: How could the director know that Alexander has changed?

HothieLight subplot spoilers ahead. It's about the fate of a boy named Alexander. In one episode the main characters save the live of a boy named Alexander, who would have died otherwise. Later they are ordered to kill the boy, because he will become a mass murderer or something like that. McLaren take...

Q: What does "And boy did he smell like it, she thought. Nothing like a welder with no place to bathe" from “Blood and Chocolate” mean?

ReikaThere is an expression in this book: And boy did he smell like it, she thought. Nothing like a welder with no place to bathe. I don't know what this sentence means exactly or what it's supposed to mean grammatically, because I'm not English. What does it mean?

Holy crap. And I do mean crap. Searching ISFDb for series with "elemental" in the name gives me 55 hits. All but 7 of those are from the past 10 years, and only 1 pre-dates 2000!
So it's not my imagination, there really is a tsunami of garbage fantasy swamping the genre.
And of the 48 series from the past 10 years, the majority are from the past 5. It's not just an avalanche of schlock, it's an exponentially increasing avalanche of worn cliches rendered in journeyman prose.

Q: Is there a full script available for all episodes of season 2 of Spider-Man Unlimited?

WayBigJust wanted to know if there is any site or the script writer has made it public the full script of all episodes of season 2 of Spider-Man Unlimited which got cancelled.

@DavidW oh?
@DavidW People see books succeed and think "I want some of that" maybe?

And the barriers to entry for self-publishing are now far too low.

@DavidW there's no harm there I think
it means that breakthrough writer can get through

I can recall being in a bookstore, got to be 25 years now, and talking to the owner about a book on the shelf with distinctively (for the time) subpar cover art. Looking more carefully, it didn't have an imprint that I recognized. It was a guy he knew who had self-published it; shelled out a several thousand dollars to print a thousand copies, and was leaning on his friends/acquaintances to try to sell it.
@AncientSwordRage I never got the impression that it wasn't possible for an actually talented author to break through before.

8:44 PM
@DavidW Listen to some of Brandon Sanderson's talks/lessons on being writer
his youtube channel has his latest lessons from the university course he gives
He has a section on self publishing
It's hard to get noticed for an established imprint
also it can be much much more economical to hit the eBook market, at which point it's more economical to be self-published
for more non-video info
@DavidW also, think about how you never heard about the aspiring writers (who are good enough) but don't break through, a sort of survivor's bias

But if there really were talented authors who were previously overlooked, you'd expect them to show up in the self-publishing era - and make a name for themselves. And while there may be a case or two, it's not nearly as big a thing as the people who denigrate the traditional publishers make it.

9:07 PM
@DavidW being a good writer doesn't make you a good self-publisher
and self-publishing doesn't immediately mean you're a bad writer

It just means that the filters - for talent, ideas, etc. - previously applied are no longer there.
Maybe in those days we lost a voice or two. It's better than those same voices plus others who would have been published, being completely swamped by an endless firehose of churned-out dreck.

@DavidW disagree

You're permitted to.

thanks
It's also possible that there are far more good self-published books out there than you realise, because you don't associate good books with self-published
The Martian and Eragon were both self published
So was Shadows of the Conqueror which I've heard very good things about

After several bad experiences (and given much more severe constraints on my time than I had 20 years ago) I basically don't pick up an author I don't know unless I get 3 personal recommendations.
(It depends on which person is doing the recommending, it's not a hard rule.)

9:17 PM
@DavidW I get that
I haven't finished a book in years

I'm sorry. At least it's not that bad for me.

I picked up a couple of bad books (Orcs, and something like Golden empire?) and stopped making time for it

I completely get it.
