now I recall why I stopped using ICQ. Russian spim.
My workplace required me to start up my acct again and now someone is texting me in Russian

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Всё это было бы смешно, когда бы не было так грустно.

@Robusto dammit, not you too!

@Mitch When I first looked at this picture I had a mouthful of coffee and it was nearly disastrous.

user19161
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Beware of keyboard.

@JasperLoy the last time I choke-spat a hot beverage (tea, with sugar) all over my keyboard was approximately 10 minutes after I had just finished cleaning said keyboard. I was NOT amused.

Q: Is the phrase "Mussolini ordered the Italy invaded Albania." correct?

AnixxI sometimes encounter sentences like this Mussolini ordered the Italy invaded Albania. It seems incorrect to me but I want native speakers to prove. UPDATE. The sentence above is taken from Wikipedia. That's why it is unmodifyed. But what about "The manager ordered the subordinate painted fe...

ugh, he made another question?

Another same question, no less.

He disturbed this groove.

And harshed my mellow.

9:37 PM
Seriously, I can't even close it as dupe, have to go with NARQ.

user19161
He failed to disturb me. I am quite unshakable.

The manager ordered the subordinate painted fence.
The UN mandated internationally deployed forces.
The EU ordered internationally built accelerator.
The authorities decided the cafe quickly closed.
That's not even remotely the same sentence structure.

user19161
@RegDwightАΑA They all start with a capital letter and end with a full stop though.

It's basically a question about any sentence that has an -ed in it.

user19161
How is the progress of ELL? Has it died already?

9:42 PM
Why would it? Because you don't care?
Hint: it might not care right back at you.

user19161
No, because I am still thinking that it should be merged with ELU.

You want more "The authorities decided the cafe quickly closed" questions?

user19161
Will those fit on ELL and not be closed?

How can I know? It's not live yet.
Which coincidentally is also the reason why it can't be merged with ELU.
For it to get merged it has to exist first. Go support it!

user19161
@RegDwightАΑA Done already!

9:45 PM
Thank you!
But yeah. I guess ELL actually could work as a free for all.

@RegDwightАΑA So once we have ELL, and Writers, and Linguistics, and Literature, what is left for ELU?

With the obvious exceptions of not constructive questions, or ones about, say, translation from Chinese to Russian.

user19161
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Nothing. QED.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 the same questions we are having every day.
The ones that don't get closed.

@RegDwightАΑA we HAVE those?

9:48 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 english.stackexchange.com/…

It's not that bad, you know.
Now let's have a look at the closed ones, shall we.

user19161
Well, I hope that when questions get migrated there I will start with a decent amount of rep already.

Okay, that's a bit contaminated with dupes. Can't filter those out I guess.

so twice as many open vs closed questions, approx, but presumably that is excluding deleted ones

9:55 PM
Well that isn't really saying anything. The deleted questions are just crap. Not our fault that we got them and had to get rid of them.
Also I used different search parameters for the two links (number of views).
We have like 17k questions in total I think.
2.7k and 5k+ don't add up to that.
I can pull up actual stats from SEDE.
Exact duplicate 1106
General reference 517
Off topic 334
Not a real question 269
Subjective and argumentative 192
Too localized 173

10:19 PM
so what are those totals: closed questions, deleted closed questions, or both?

Uh. Looking at the SQL, I've no idea.

looks like that would include deleted questions

right? since it isn't filtering on any kind of deleted criteria......

I wish I knew how close I am to Sportsmanship.

10:25 PM
This query is one strange beast.

2591 questions total, according to my macro. Which is about 14% of all questions.
14.63%, to be more precise.

@cornbreadninja can't see that using SEDE because the votes are anonymized.

Hmm, unless closed and/or deleted questions are removed from the question total on page 1.

@RegDwightАΑA That's what I hear.

10:29 PM
@RegDwightАΑA BTDT

wait... that other query, count of "closed but not deleted" ... how is it ignoring the deleted questions?
do deleted posts have a different postTypeId ?

wonders what her mutant army name would be, should she be given the honor... Jukebox? Non-sequitur?
@RegDwightАΑA 132 rows returned.

@cornbreadninja I know. You think I didn't run it with your ID?

Them's not unique rows, though.

@RegDwightАΑA 0_0

A row is a competing answer. If a question has OVER 9000 competing answers, it will return OVER 9000 rows for that question alone.

@cornbreadninja Non Sequitur is taken, and is an honored title.

If you were a celibate, cloistered Catholic, you might be Nun Sequitur, but I don't think you want that.

Dolly Buster, official Nora Baumberger (born October 23, 1969 in Prague, Czechoslovakia as Nora Dvořáková), is a film producer and director, actress, author, and a former porn star. Buster has starred in hundreds of X-rated European movies, and had gained a name for herself as one of the biggest in the industry. She is also the author of a successful series of crime-novels about a German porn-star-turned-amateur-sleuth. In 2004 she attempted to obtain a seat in European parliament as candidate of a fringe Czech political party. The party got 0.71% of votes. She appeared in the German v...

Eine Kleine Nacht Musik.
Come on, this is really suspicious.
Two people misspelling it exactly the same way...

@RegDwightАΑA my German is lacking.

You're blowing your cover, ninja.

I think it's funny that he tells the dog to "platz" (sit). In American English (via Yiddish), platzed can mean "falling-down drunk."

Q: Does Friday night's Shabbat ceremony have to centre around a meal?

studentoftorahIs it necessary that the giving of thanks for Shabbat, including lighting of candles, blessings over bread, and the Kiddush need centre around the consumption of a 'main' meal? @RegDwightАΑA wait, there's a Friday night Shabbat too?
Because Shabbat begins at sundown?
Judaism is fascinating.

If I do nothing and like it, I try to do nothing as often as possible.
Certainly 29 Shabbaths a month is not too much to ask for.

Reg couldn’t read the unary math in  ·  = .
@RegDwightАΑA Ya knows, they’d try to eat your lunch over that if you asked whether it was “correct”.
I know they always try to chow on mine when I do.

Q: Why "The authorities ordered the cafe quickly closed" is valid while "The UN ordered internationally deployed forces." is not?

AnixxWhy the sentence "The authorities ordered the cafe quickly closed" is valid while "The UN ordered internationally deployed forces." is not?

Damn it.
I am really sick of this guy.
And I am sick of his !@#$% longassed question statements wedged into the title.

@tchrist actually I did just that, and bribed an actual linguist into answering to boot.

Asked, or asserted?

Q: Is "my wife and I's" correct, or should it be "my wife's and my"?

RegDwight АΑAI just stumbled upon a Reddit post titled: My wife and I's seafood collaboration dinner. How does it look? Sure enough, the top comment immediately points out that it should be "my wife's and my". However, a cross-post to the Grammar subreddit produced the following comment: It's fine a...

Gah I hate these new titles. I want my original title back.

@tchrist Ohai.
@tchrist Yum, apples.

Indeed.

Looks like oranges to me.

II * III = IIIIII in "unary" (base-1; tally sticks) notation.

Well thank you for explaining the only obvious thing.

But $Bill poked Reg’s eyes out, forbidding him the fruit of Paradise.

Oh, $Bill. He's a silly one, alright.

@tchrist that would be a tomato.

I wasn't talking to you.

@Mahnax How is your holiday so far?

Heh, Syntactic confusion.

Am I wrong? I mean, like, seriously?

@tchrist Not in the least.

@Mahnax Bad, bad.

@JasperLoy That's unfortunate.

@tchrist you are not wrong. But it's the Summer of Love. We are not supposed to be quarreling out in the open. We are supposed to be sweeping things under rugs.

user19161
@Mahnax I decided to switch back to original KFC from spicy.

11:43 PM
I fixed his title, didn’t I?

@tchrist of course it is. But at least we're not SO, where he'd comment right back "yea asshole im saying send me the code".

@JasperLoy Oh, why?

(That's an actual comment off of SO, BTW. More fun on the blog.)
Joel Spolsky on July 31, 2012

You can’t fix what you can’t measure, so the first thing we did as a part of our Summer of Love campaign was try to measure friendliness in an objective and repeatable way. We gathered 7000 comments from Stack Overflow and submitted them to Mechanical Turk. For each comment, we asked 20 people to rate the comment as Friendly, Unfriendly, or “Neutral/Unclear.”

There are different ways of massaging the data, but I do want to give you a flavor for the kind of comments we’re talking about when we’re talking about unfriendly comments. Here is a snapshot of the com …

that explains things

@Jez Nice.

@RegDwightАΑA Only the salty ducks limp when they fly.
In which case, they fly into the tree.

Hm. I thought its being on the MultiCollider was the reason we mentioned it was on the MultiCollider. But I'm glad to see people discover things all by themselves.
@tchrist honey let me be your salted duck.

@Mahnax That’s all he keeps posting. And we keep closing. He isn’t learning.
Well, or we aren’t.
