07:00 - 20:0020:00 - 00:00

8:00 PM
@Skillmon @DavidCarlisle said about 'newcomers', so I was working back to the longer-standing members of the team
@Skillmon Probably Morten too, but I'm not certain

@DavidCarlisle I meant which editor, not that he was among the "old folks"

@Skillmon best to assume emacs unless strong evidence of wilfulness

@DavidCarlisle but he produces solid code, so VIM seems more likely. After all he managed to edit l3fp.

@Skillmon ...I'll need it after helping this student...

8:14 PM
I'm back.

@LaTeXereXeTaL you were gone? I thought you sat on the couch.

@Skillmon I'm so quiet as to be invisible sometimes. Either that or I was sitting in profile.
All this talk about editors. I can't even remember which editor I used when I used emTeX under MSDOS back in the '90s.
When I was a Windows user I used WinEdt and MikTeX, then switched to the Mac and TeXShop in 2002.

@LaTeXereXeTaL I started off with WinEdt/MiKTeX in 2005 :)

@LaTeXereXeTaL I remember. It was kindergarten! (meaning: I'm young)
@JosephWright I started with TeXStudio in 2013/14 (not sure anymore), but switched over to VIM shortly afterwards (I used TeXStudio for the first two documents or something like that).

@JosephWright I use TexWorks. It came with MikTex. So, like, whatever. :p But then, what do I know, I'm a linguist. :p

8:30 PM
POwer outage took me offline. Back now. (Hurricane blew through here earlier today. Still lots of wind.)

@LaTeXereXeTaL I hope you and your close ones are safe!

@Skillmon It's startify, a vim-plugin. :)

@PauloCereda found out in the meantime (but for me it doesn't have such a nice bubble)

@LaTeXereXeTaL I am not in the team, but I work with TCS (theoretical computer science)
@Skillmon Oh hold on, mr. rabbit
@Skillmon let g:startify_fortune_use_unicode = 1
@barbarabeeton ooh

@PauloCereda I was just starting to :help startify

8:45 PM
@Skillmon also
let g:startify_custom_footer =
    \ ['', "   ooh vim", '']

@PauloCereda :)

@Skillmon :)

@Plergux @PauloCereda and I both like TeXworks a lot

@Plergux -- Don't discount linguists. You're not the only one here, you know.

@barbarabeeton yes, we have @DavidCarlisle, a natural.

8:47 PM
@JosephWright quack

@JosephWright Yeah, I like it. It reminds me a lot of my car. It's very plain and fuddy but it gets me from point A to point B. :p

@Skillmon -- Polyglot is not the same as linguist. @DavidCarlisle's degree is in math.

@barbarabeeton Wheeee! :D

@barbarabeeton psshh.

@Skillmon -- I guess that should be followed by "tsshh". (Misquoting Nanki-Poo from the Mikado.)

8:50 PM
@barbarabeeton I don't know this reference :(

@Plergux ooh

@Skillmon Yes, and thank you. Lots of trees down and some students were without power so they couldn't attend the Zoom classes.

@Skillmon -- What? Never heard of Gilbert & Sullivan? (I keep forgettiong. I'm surrounded by children.)

@barbarabeeton I'm 27 years old and not from the US, so bear with me :)

@barbarabeeton and ducks :)

8:52 PM
@PauloCereda I'm an old rabbit....

@Skillmon -- But G&S are British. Granted, their heyday was in the Victorian era ...

@barbarabeeton I have heard of Gilbert and Sullivan :p (although my favourite "Gilbert and Sullivan" moment is The Two Ronnies doing them up XD)

@Skillmon and I'm a young dinosaur.

@StefanKottwitz if that's you in the profile pic, you're an ugly dinosaur (or no dinosaur at all, in which case I apologize for the "ugly")

@Skillmon /hugs

8:54 PM
@PauloCereda /nibble

@Plergux -- The two Ronnies were good at "doing up" all kinds of acts that deserved it.

@Skillmon Corona aged and lockdown version of me:

@barbarabeeton I'm not British as well...

I should update my profile pic.

I wanna be British
Oh wait, Brexit

8:56 PM
@PauloCereda so you can leave?

@Skillmon oh no
\leaveeumode

^^ is this a thingy?

@StefanKottwitz me in the glorious days:

@Skillmon ooooooh

@Skillmon -- I know that, but @PauloCereda manages to know just about every single thing ever performed by Flanders & Swann. They're British, but he's Brazilian. (And his Portuguese is suspicious.)

@Skillmon I saw that movie when I was young! Oh, wait ...

8:58 PM
Jul 8 '13 at 18:20, by Paulo Cereda
I wanna be German.

@DavidCarlisle That's an old one! 2013... Probably before I even started TeX.

@barbarabeeton Oh, yes. I acquired all the series and extracted all the musical bits out and some days when I'm working I just play 2R music. XD
@barbarabeeton Well, obviously. Flanders and Swann are EPIC! XD

@Plergux guess I'll have to change tabs to youtube or something.

@Plergux -- So were G&S in their day. (They didn't have as many interesting animals, but they did have a lot of pompous two-legged creatures in fancy uniforms.)

@barbarabeeton Hahahaha! True :D

9:05 PM
@Skillmon the profile pic is chosen because it's from a happy time ;-)

@Skillmon Flanders and Swann are on Spotify as well. I would start with Have some Madeira m'dear. But I would obviously say that because I'm a linguist and they lyrics are full of zeugmas. :p

@Plergux Madeira wine is good!

@StefanKottwitz Is it? I've never tasted it. I can just about do some rosé or a good white wine, but otherwise I'm strictly a beer person. :p

9:22 PM
@Plergux It's a fortified wine for fortified people. I'm basically in the beer group as well but an explorer too.
@Plergux When I was crew on ships, we partied with everything locally available in ports, so it was on Madeira. :-)

@Skillmon VORPAL RABBIT!

@StefanKottwitz Cool :D I'll have to have a look see next time I go to the "State". :p (alcohol shops in Iceland are state run)

@Plergux I tried to remember Iceland visits (hot springs inmidst snow, riding on pony-sized Icelandic horses) and googled Icelandic ponies, guess what I found shocked

@StefanKottwitz ?

@Plergux google "corrected" ponies to p*nis and lead to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icelandic_Phallological_Museum

9:34 PM
@StefanKottwitz look, other dinosours:

@StefanKottwitz dies laughing

@StefanKottwitz can affirm. Beer guy here: Madeira is nice wine. But I couldn't drink large amounts of it, just a few sips for the phenomenal taste.

@Skillmon That's exactly my face (in two steps) when my phone rings before my alarm clock does, in the morning.
Some people don't know that IT guys do work long after midnight, and may need a break in the morning.

1 hour later…
10:46 PM
Oh wine... I knew I forgot something when I was in Madeira in 2017...
@Plergux ooh love your new profile photo!
@barbarabeeton my Portuguese is... okay-ish. :)
@Plergux ooh a wompom
@DavidCarlisle oopsie

11:23 PM
@Plergux yay for the profile pic!
