Q: Meaning of ‘matted well’ and ‘silk gowns’ in Bleak House

Soyuz42I’ve come across the following passage in Chapter 1 of Bleak House by Charles Dickens: On such an afternoon the various solicitors in the cause, some two or three of whom have inherited it from their fathers, who made a fortune by it, ought to be—as are they not?—ranged in a line, in a long matt...

Q: Why does Tigris call Coriolanus Snow a "good person"?

EJoshuaS - Reinstate MonicaUpon learning about Coriolanus Snow being forced to join the Peacekeepers due to his cheating in the Hunger Games, Tigris said the following: "You were set up to fail," said Tigris. "The Hunger Games are an unnatural, vicious punishment. How could a good person like you be expected to go along w...

Q: Does "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" present Coriolanus Snow as a narcissist?

EJoshuaS - Reinstate MonicaThroughout the book, Snow is seen repeatedly trying to manipulate other characters, such as him appearing to fake friendship with Sejanus Plinth (and his unsuccessful attempt to manipulate Plinth for money at their first encounter). Later, he convinces Clemensia to forgive her; the books make it ...

Q: Was Snow still following his morality in the Hunger Games series?

EJoshuaS - Reinstate MonicaRelated: Why does Tigris call Coriolanus Snow a "good person"? The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes contains the following: Coriolanus felt disconnected from their "romantic notions" [about the war], as he didn't share a romanticized view of the war. Courage in battle was often necessary because o...

Q: What do literary critics mean when they say a text is overdetermined?

TsundokuIn literary criticism one can sometimes read statements such as the following: "Helena’s love therefore is overdetermined to a degree unusual even in Shakespeare" (Michael Delahoyde quoting [Harold] Bloom). 'Abel believes Antoinette’s madness is “overdetermined” to show her relationships with Ro...

Q: In Connie Willis' short story *Ado*, what is Morticians International's objection to the use of the word 'casket' in *The Merchant of Venice*?

BrahadeeshConnie Willis' Ado is a short story in which language is censored to an absurd degree so as to not offend anyone. The protagonist is a school teacher who decides to cover Shakespeare, but first he and his colleague Ms. Harrows have to edit out any "problematic" language found in the plays. After ...

Hi @Randal'Thor :) Thanks for the helpful link to the Meta discussion in your edit! I saw it too late, I ended up proposing tag info for the tag already.

user185131
I expect it will be auto-deleted by the end of the day, so it's not really an issue, though?

@Brahadeesh No problem, I can reject those edits to get them out of the system (and rejected edits don't imply any bad effects on your account).
Thank you for taking the effort to create tag wikis when you're making new tags, though! That's really appreciated, especially since single-use tags will be automatically deleted unless they have a tag wiki.

Ah, don't mention it, I love that so much effort has been put in to maintaining the tags and the tagging system here. I'm happy to do my part to maintain them. :)

If you want to read some Emerson bashing, have a look at my latest answer on Yvor Winters and R. W. Emerson. Winters obviously disliked Emerson with a vengeance.

I've never heard so much of Ennio Morricone's music on the radio as today. Some of his music was the soundtrack to childhood summer holidays, when I listened to cassettes (!) with some of his western soundtracks before I became familiar with the westerns themselves.
One of his compositions that I haven't heard today is "Chi Mai", which was used in the films Maddalena (1971) and Le Professionnel (1981). If the title doesn't ring a bell, just look for it on YouTube for that "aha"-moment.

Q: What's meant here by "{the heresies} are actually unconscious?

Ahmed SamirIn "The Crime of The Communist" by G. K. Chesterton, there is a conversation between many persons about the communism: ‘Well, you’re all very down on Communism, of course,’ said the Master, with a sigh. ‘But do you really think there’s so much of it to be down on? Are any of your heresies really...
