Amen

To be clear, I do love the creativity in my job. It's a major source of pleasure. But it's not about me creating something, it's about the creative collaboration.

@Vikas a couple of things... You are probably likely to see this often on social media because of how content is curated... I have friends who gets memes about being a nurse and I never see those because the algorithms know too much :P
The other thing is it's not about graphic design solely but the creative process (which is problem solving for the most part)
The whole "fuck off" section is about people procrastinating...you never have to do that if you don't want to, and you probably shouldn't if you don't want to be freaking out as you finish a work
There are ways to force creativity. We have a Q on this, I think it's "how do you break out of your current mindsets" or something similar
You can use ideation techniques like Scamper

@curious Nnedi Okorafor on writer's block is ršŸ˜.

And there is some evidence that you can make insight more likely to happen if you do some very hard thinking about a problem, and then do something mechanical like going for a walk, taking a shower, doing dishes, etc
@BESW Hearted!

@curious I've found that I do my best work when I've got that kind of mechanical thinking time... but also if I can stagger my projects so that I'm percolating an upcoming project in the back of my brain while I'm actively working to finish the current one.
Whenever I can budget time into a schedule for the project to just bubble in the back of my brain for days/weeks, the more effective and efficient I am when it comes time to actually do it.
@curious This is related to what I mentioned above: that people tend to give obviously artistic professions some mystique that doesn't actually exist, which creates resistance against actually understanding our own processes. "Writer's block" turns specific targetable obstacles into a mystical un-explainable force with obscures out ability to overcome them.

@BESW Definitely! Whenever I had clients who had a project but we couldn't get started for some reason because we didn't have the copy or whatever, I'd still try to get as much details as possible to put it on the burner

I enjoy reading things like Ursula Vernon's twitter account and James Gurney's blog, because they got their start as professional illustrators who had to bang out high-quality content fast. They know every profession which involves judgement is creative, and they know that artistic professions don't have to succumb to mystical thinking.

And it's not just about design, I'd do the same in grad school for papers... typically I'd get started thinking as soon as I had the class outline
I miss commuting specifically for this reason...it allowed for most of my thinking/creative time
@BESW Exactly, engineers need to be creative too

@curious This, so much.
Working from home is... weird.
I'm working on new transition rituals.

@Vikas and as the partner of someone who is a IT business owner, I would not trade jobs with him, ever
@BESW Ah yes, struggling to "leave" work?

I recommend the Productivity Alchemy podcast, not just for the specific organizational insights but because it's hosted by an IT professional and an author/illustrator and the discussions they have about their respective careers is... very reassuring in terms of both shared stresses and unique stresses.

@BESW Ooo thanks, I'll pass that along
I mean, IT is already complicated, so the added layer of owning a business in it is not for the faint of heart.
I think I'd like to own a business eventually, but I'm thinking more along the lines of selling ready made things than offering a service anymore
Having people call on Sunday morning because a server crashed is not really something I find pleasure in :P
@BESW I would borrow your weather in a heartbeat...we already have snow here :-S

@curious People say that when they look at the temperature, but then they see the humidity.
