@RegDwigнt Too bad Monty Python isn't doing sketches anymore. I would love to see one where someone actually goes to help this person out and receives nothing but criticism and abuse.

@Færd from my experience observing native speakers, it's merely preferable.
That said, also from my experience observing native speakers: fuck native speakers. They don't know nothing about anything.
Everyone makes mistakes all the time. Especially idiots. And most people are idiots.
If you make an idiot mistake in a foreign language, you get corrected. If you make an idiot mistake in your mother tongue, you get to claim it's the new norm.
Fuck that.

@RegDwigнt God, SE drama again.
Did you notice?
Many mods have resigned already, even Gilles.
SE have messed up even worse than Jeff Atwood did back in 2011 or so.

@Mitch - Why am I just now learning the words for punctual and durative verbs? It's been like trying to discuss potty training without using the words poop and diaper... Someone owes me a Popsicle.

@J.Taylor Poets it sticks to no grammar / Hit word with the liter'ry hammer / As long as they rhyme / We no give a dime / 'Cause in it we are for the glamour — marcellothearcane 2 hours ago

Q: Firing mods and forced slippery relicensing: is Stack Exchange still interested in cooperating with the community?

amonThe last weeks and days have seen some erratic behaviour by Stack Exchange Inc, such as likely illegal changes to the content license and the firing of a community moderator for no good reason. It would be nice if those just were examples of ill judgement, but the disturbing alternative is that S...

9:09 AM
@RegDwigнt Well, that claim needs statistical support, but I get the idea. Thanks.
@marcellothearcane Do you know if there is a democratically built and managed Q&A site on the internet that's comparable in size with SE? Something like the Wikipedia model but for a Q&A site?

@Færd Nope, but that's context for Cerberus's mod drama comment

2 hours later…
11:10 AM
@Færd well, I am one datapoint.
You can't have many datapoints without having one.
@Cerberus I did not notice anything.
I don't follow the news even on TV or the NYT. And you want me to follow the news on SE?
Besides, last week was really busy for me. And this one won't be much better.
In fact I must close this window right now and start getting stuff done.

Get Stuff done! Get Stuff done! Get Stuff done!

I only came in here to look for a quote by Rob.
And now I can't find it.
So I will have to misquote him again.

I'm sure he's used to it by now

@KannE I've never heard those words before, at least not without swearing. They make more sense than perfect and imperfect, but completed and continuous are the best of all but no one uses completed.
Unless I've totally misunderstood where you're coming from.

1:19 PM
> The Company. informs you of a serious unexpected adverse reaction (SUAR), a perforation of the small intestine ..
Do I need the indefinite article before "perforation"?
It's a single case so I must need it I guess.

1:55 PM
@CowperKettle Yes, you totally need it

2:21 PM
Are you meant to flag stuff all over the place?

Thank you!

> a metastasis shows on a section of the CT scan that includes the left iliac lymph node
In Russian, the phrase is "in a projection of the left iliac lymph node".
I can't find the English counterpart for this radiology report phrase.
It's when something is seen in a slice of a CT scan that also includes some organ.
Literally in Russian it goes like "a metastasis is seen in the projection of this or that organ"
I know that the English counterpart to Russian "projection" is "view", like "left lateral view". But how to translate it when a "view" passes through a particular body organ..

Q: Stack Overflow Inc., sinat chinam, and the goat for Azazel

Monica CellioOn Friday, half an hour before Shabbat and two days before Rosh Hashana, Stack Overflow Inc. suddenly revoked my moderator status on all sites where I had it. I found this out while handling flags, when I suddenly got notifications for Marshal and Deputy badges (which moderators are ineligible t...

For more info, see the links in the Teachers' Lounge.
I never knew about it either, until it was brought to my attention yesterday by someone else.
Many moderators are resigning.
The oldest mod on SO has resigned.
One of my fellow mods on Latin has resigned.
The others are considering doing so.

@Mitch Oh, so they're not common knowledge. Well, I feel less stupid then. Thanks. I've been saying continuous and "one-time thing" (or "done deal"...whatever), but I can't ever see the big picture without help. Oh, and back in the day (before ingredients mattered, and Pull-ups were invented), we potty-trained during warm weather and gave them Popsicles to stay on the pot. It was like a continuous participation award--"Give 'em a Popsicle"--just for sitting there actually.

Q: Brothers, I must go

CalebIn the beginning... 8 years, 1 month, and 6 days ago at something between 2 and 3am in the first few hours of this site being launched I signed up from a mobile phone browser and acquired account #30. I still remember being annoyed that the public release happened to fall while I was on a multi...

Also this.

4:44 PM
@Mitch - Parents probably don't do that anymore...unlimited dyed sugar water...do anything not to buy Pampers.

4:54 PM
@KannE I fail to see any natural respect for the world as it should be in not calling it a 'poopsicle'.
Wait...how did this go from the terminology for verb aspect to toilet training? This is some weird Sapir-Whorf shit going on. Literally.
@KannE There's the 'running around the rainforest naked and pooping when you feel like it' method.

@Mitch LOL!

@Cerberus Is the mod situation gong the way of the UK?
Down the dumper?
(I'm trying to keep it on topic with GI issues)

5:14 PM
@Mitch I just thought I should explain our (only 20 people in the world probably) weird idiom, I guess you would call it. People are getting touchy. I don't even really know the gender of practically everyone that I really like and respect on here. From your profile pic, I guess you're male. From mine, I'm obviously a 30-something woman who still thinks she's cute. See? Who knows. Let's start a revolution--make them really singular.

@KannE 1) I'm a dude, 2) From your avatar, I think you're an emoji, 3) 'them' has been used as a singular for centuries, 4) some other fourth thing.
Who's getting touchy? Or is it tetchy? If the latter, what does that even mean? Also, are the cicadas still out there? Or is summer over?

5:41 PM
@Mitch 1) I would've bet $20 on that (or $40 because it's payday). 2) I'm too old to use the words like avatar. 3) I mean really, like...Did you talk to Ted yesterday? Yes, I talked to them for hours. 4) I have to google Sapir-Whorf now (thanks, Uncle Mitch), spend money, and find a rainforest...and fireproof Pull-ups. 5) Summer is never over; it's not a state of mind, it's in your heart.
Conversing with the South Wind

Shush, shush…
What do you hear?
Maple leaves rustling,
Crisp and clear.

Flurry, scurry…
Where do you go?
In search of a bobwhite,
High and low.

Pitter, patter…
Why do you cry?
Summer is over ah-gain,
Goodbye.

6:43 PM
@KannE But I'm actually curious if the cicadas are still going now.
@Cerberus I can't find that... is it a chat room viewable only by mods?

7:32 PM
@Cerberus, meh why are you giving me things to read. I've long forgotten how reading works.
If they are suddenly stripping off people's mod privileges, there's no point in people giving up mod privileges.
If you're robbing me, I can't express that it's hugely unfair by giving you all my money.
Actually, maybe I should read it after all and take all those people's names. Maybe if I steal all their pianos, they'll protest by giving me all their harps and cellos, too.
I could make a business out of this.
Lol WTF why is this about gender pronouns.
That's a non-issue in English. I have never, ever, referred to anyone by any pronoun other than "you".
It would be a nightmare in Japanese, and even in Russian or French or Dutch it can be occasionally difficult. But in English that is just not a thing that exists.
> In fact for the scope of this site we've gone so far as to allow any established viewpoint to self identify as 'Christian'. At the end of the day when we stand before the judgement seat it will be apparent that not all of those groups were really Christian
That's a very non-Christian thing to say.
I am saying that as an Orthodox Christian.
Do not judge, it says in the Bible.
Also, there'll be no judgement seat. You die and then the worms eat you.
And I'm definitely not doing that at the end of the day, either. I've got piano lessons to give tomorrow.

8:02 PM
> The dogmatic demand has been repeated over and over in the moderator's chat room with no quarter given for compromise. Conform or leave.
See, that's the issue right there. You're sitting in all the wrong rooms.

@RegDwigнt Not me man. I'm living forever then throwing myself into the sun.

Come sit here on ELU. There's crumpets and we talk all things music.
@Mitch you're throwing yourself into the Sun at 30 kilometres per second already. Problem is, the Sun is really really really far away.

Crumpets? Are those like muffins? OK, that's worth listening to anyone until the muffin is gone.

Anyway. I have long conformed and left. The mod room, that is.
I have conformed and left before there was even any talk about conforming or leaving.
I am a very progressive man like that.

@RegDwigнt I just saw a youtube video of Carl Sagan describing how Eratosthenes figured out the circumference of the earth and ... oh. never mind.

8:06 PM
He looked in a well. Then he walked for three days and looked into another well.
So all his calculations were off by a whopping three days.

I'm sure what I was thinking of was relevant

I am sure that it was not.
I make sure to never think anything relevant. Saves yourself a ton of work. And keeps you out of trouble.

The Sagan story was that Eratosthenes -paid- some dude to walk 300km to look down a well (or up an obelisk...accounts differ)
that poor dude. I hope meals were included.
and a hat.
some portable shade. and sunscreen.
@RegDwigнt All I want to do is get in trouble. But no one seems to care.

@Mitch I can get you in trouble for ten easy payments of $3000.

Seems weird that all the foofaraw, all the hullabaloo, all the kerfuffle all the ado, was about pronouns. and we didn't even get a say.

8:11 PM
Who are you calling "we"? Borg prefer that you call Borg Borg.

@RegDwigнt Hard pass. your idea of trouble is what I spit out five times before breakfast.
@RegDwigнt We means me and any other jackasses still left.
That show was great

@Mitch Yeah that's what you people always say before you end up in a secret prison in the center of Moscow.
Shrug.
Pay up and you won't be disappointed.

@RegDwigнt You mean their breakfast is not the buffet I was hoping for?

@Mitch the show was great until jackasses let jackasses drink and drive.
@Mitch I am not here to spoil surprises.

with an omelet bar and a waffle station and fresh squeezed OJ?

8:13 PM
I can only spoil surprises for ten easy payments of $3000.

@RegDwigнt Too late
@RegDwigнt That sound like a Hobson's choice.
Or whatever that guys name was.

Your saying "it's too late" is all the proof I need that you've no idea about all the surprises.

I got an inkling of an idea just from that.
like there's gonna be more than one surprise.
Maybe a pop quiz next week.
Or maybe a hanging.
It'll be a surprise.
With my memory, I'll forget and it will totally be a surprise.

You think you know what the surprise is only because I never told you about the twist. And my telling you that there'd be a twist is no spoiler either, because maybe there's a double twist. And so on.
It's like that other guy with that other gay Greek name.

I'm not surprised

8:17 PM
With the Achilles and the turtle.
Dafuq how do I do strikethrough here.

There was only one Greek dude in that story and it was Apollo

Three dashes

Ah there you go. Moh bettah.

Good night

the hare was not Greek

8:18 PM
No that Zeno guy.
I don't know what his name was.

Oh

I like this chat's equanimity despite the clusterfuck all over SE.

What?

I don't know that there is a clusterfuck.

How dare you.
nobody is here

8:18 PM
You people keep telling me that there is, and I ain't seeing none.

keeps things civil
@RegDwigнt active meta at the moment

@RegDwigнt Well, I just like you.
I mean, MuseScore and the idiocy over there should do, we don't need to deal with things here.

@M.A.R. I can make you stop liking me for ten easy payments of $3000.

What? Is there yet another chat clusterfuck?
heaven forfend

No.

8:21 PM
@KitZ.Fox Not chat-related, much bigger than that

But Cerberus linked some shit because he was bored.

It's gonna ruin the mood, I guess don't go finding about it

Bigger than chat? I don't think there is anything bigger than chat.

No by all means do read it. I read it and I'm still laughing.

If someone here has a mood.

8:23 PM
@Mitch well good thing I wasn't able to find the meta ever again ever since they changed the design.
I can only recommend you do likewise.
What, you have no life? You need entertainment? Go write a symphony right now.
People might remember that in a hundred years.
Nobody will remember anything from the meta of today.
Also, I've been stripped of or given up mod privileges before, I don't even remember which one it was (possibly both, actually, on two several occasions? I genuinely do not remember) and I can tell you for a fact that it's no biggie.

Huh. I guess I better read up in the TL then. Seems dramatic for something that's not on the face of it dramatic.

Go give up your mod privileges right now, or strip me of mine. That will literally change nothing for absolutely anyone involved.

@KitZ.Fox It's three levels down of dramatic

It's not even a tempest in a teapot. There is no teapot.
@Mitch yes, and that right there makes me think that the people involved are involved way too much, and could do with a little bit of getting less involved.
Maybe they'll go take up ballet instead.
I'm still waiting for the next Baryshnikov.

You'd think it'd be obvious who did what mean thing to whom.
But it's not.
@RegDwigнt Isn't it that girl in the Pepsi commercial?

8:31 PM
Anyone who wants to be a politician is unfit to be a politician. Anyone who wants to be a policeman or a soldier must be kept out of the police or armed forces at all costs.
@Mitch no, it's the boy who dated the horse face in Cex and the Sity.

the guy from Law and Order?

The who from what?

Right

All I can figure is that they wanted to adopt the use of singular they as a generic pronoun?

Is that so? Then I'm actually for it.

8:32 PM
Is that it? But enforced though.

That should get rid of half the dupes we get every day.

That seems like a weird thing to enforce, since the rest of the world is barely recognizing 'Hopefully' as a sentence adjective.

Hopefully SE will fix that next.

Actual grammar police

I did suggest that this site here be called GrammarNazi.com.
I'm not even joking, it's up on our meta, go and check.

8:34 PM
Dude, you can't call it that.

I can't link to it for I don't know where our meta is.
@Mitch true, I can't. Which is why I suggested that SE does it for me.

It's on the right now.

I only see shutterstock ads there.
Fuck the right.
Anyway I'm not keen to go see my post that I know is there. I'm just saying you can go see it if you don't.

Well, I can, but you deleted it: english.meta.stackexchange.com/a/108/8360
Over 9 years ago. How time flies.

voted to undelete

8:39 PM
@KitZ.Fox I deleted it to get the bronze badge.
After like six years or something.

one.

Close enough for me. I studied maths, I cannot count.

ah, right.

Anyway. This whole pronouns game is a very US thing and the rest of the world doesn't give a flying fuck.

Except the ones who do.

8:41 PM
And the US is simply bored because for the first time in decades you have a president that hasn't started a single war.
Obama should give his Nobel Peace Prize to Trump.
@Mitch I'd undelete it myself if I got to keep the badge. But this horrible SE regime won't let me keep it.
Wake up, sheeple.
Also I'd delete it again straight away because the writing is nowhere up to my standards of today. Fuck that guy and his answer.

@RegDwigнt I've heard Sweden is attempting it.

Yes, and I've heard Sweden is renaming most of their sites to ...Nazi, too.
Sweden haven't had a proper war in what, three hundred years now?
When Tchaikovsky wrote his violin concerto, he didn't sit on the Internet complaining how people wouldn't call him a he or a she or a gay or a motorcycle.
And that's why we still remember his name to this day.
Those people who sit on the Internet complaining, you don't know their names already today.
So I say, let them do their thing. Literally nobody cares. They will all die in disgrace.

@RegDwigнt When tchaikovsky finished his violin concerto, he gave it to his boyfriend (I think?) who said it was too hard and so tchaik got miffed
He should have written more in revenge, instead of getting worked up
Then we'd have more of his music

I wonder how many mods would quit if SE demanded that we use the Oxford comma.

8:54 PM
It's a weird hill to die on.

Look at him. He's just tired.

@Mitch No, crumpets aren't like muffins. You don't cut them in half (unless you want a Royal Decree on your head)
@KitZ.Fox so all the mods are off because they want to say he and she to people?
Hey, @RegDwigнt, it's David Oistrakh's birthday
Fun violin facts

@marcellothearcane we'd also have more of his music if you went and wrote another violin concerto of comparable quality.
That is what I'm saying here.

Look, I'm trying okay?
But it's pretty tricky

Nothing prevents you from writing Mozart's 57th symphony, or Bach's BWV 4139.

8:56 PM
Recipe: 1 roomful of monkeys

@marcellothearcane thank you. Now that is useful. I'll go raise a glass right now.

Actually didn't Kreisler do something like that?
Wrote some Bach, and everyone said 'this is good Bach' and then he said it was him, and everyone said 'oh okay that's cool'.
I need to be able to play his concerto first
And also find a pet orchestra
All I've found at the moment is a tame cellist and pianist
@RegDwigнt Bach did actually write 4139, but he didn't have enough children to transcribe it

Fuck. No vodka left in the house. I forgot I drank it all last night.
I'm a disgrace. Look away. Look away.

This might be the vodka talking but:
Hey! I'm made of potatoes!
Everyone's enjoying this rare glimpse of a sober Reg
Albeit slightly hungover
No slamming doors

@marcellothearcane Hey! I am squirting machismo out of my nipples over here! I am a monster truck that walks like a man!

9:01 PM
Oh, it looks like he found something.

@marcellothearcane what's "hungover"? Except three horrible flicks, that is.
@marcellothearcane no, that's a verbatim quote from Zero Punctuation.
Your Internet-fu is lacking.

Never heard of it

On that note, what ever happened to the -fu?

Guess I should go ask on the main site.

9:02 PM
@RegDwigнt Fuck you?
Kung-fu panda fans grew up, maybe
@RegDwigнt Je ne sais pas

Jesus Christ. That dates you.
Yo mate, just a heads-up, it's against the ToS to use the site below the age of 13.

Go on
I've never seen kung-fu panda
Just heard about it

30
Q: What does the suffix “‑fu” mean?

LiuCan anyone tell me what the suffix “‑fu” stands for in the following sentence? If you want to take advantage of some other Spring-fu, like some of its aspect-oriented features, then you’ll need to use this heavy-handed, direct object management technique.

That's from our very own lovely appendix site.

@RegDwigнt guess my age competition!

See, nobody goes there, not even you.
Guess I'll have to update my answer with the information that a mere 8 years later it's no longer a thing.
@marcellothearcane everyone is 17 on the Internet these days. Except in this room, where everyone's more like 47. Except Jasper, he's 7.

9:06 PM
Reg. It's 2019.
2019 - 2010 = 9

Yes, thank you for the information.

Not 17. Guess again.

There used to be a song by Van Morrison by that name.

Also not 47.
You have 1 more guess
@RegDwigнt what happened to it?

No offense, but I could be doing literally anything else right now. Like finishing up this score for clarinet and guitar.

9:07 PM
Go for it

@marcellothearcane nobody even knows the name Van Morrison anymore, that's what happened.

Share the musescore link when you're done

It was on The Healing Game I believe.
Oh shit. Nonono. On the No Guru, No Method, No Teacher, of course.

I'm going to bed
Farewell
May thy guitar tabulatures flow freely

Thank you. No tablatures here, though.

9:10 PM
And thy clarinet glisses make it sound like Rhapsody in Blue

Classical guitar or no guitar at all. Wimps and posers, leave the hall.
@marcellothearcane it's not my piece so I'm being very concervative for once.

True. John williams and itzhak perlman paganini duos.
@RegDwigнt A page of As, like our good friend tchaikovsky

Writing sheet music for the guitar is such a pain in the arse, it's only surpassed by the pain in the arse that is reading sheet music for the guitar.

How do you come up with it?

I've only done one single guitar score so far for that reason alone.
And I have like fifty pieces specifically written for that instrument, and easily 400 arrangements.

9:12 PM
Note by note? Or record yourself playing? Or just vodka?

@marcellothearcane with what exactly? Remember, I've not been drinking, so I'm not good at following along.

Music
Writing of the notes

I just sit down and play for a minute. That is all.

I'd get lost after the first bar

@Mitch Oh, yes, sorry.

9:13 PM
And it literally is always exactly a minute.

Then how do you rememeber?

But most of it is public by now.

@marcellothearcane Well a minute is very easy to remember. But yeah these days I mostly record myself so I still remember it the day after.

@KitZ.Fox I don't mind the OXford comma itself, but I would be rather angry if they were trying to force me to use it...

Oh cool
I'll have to try

9:14 PM
Yeah you totally must.

I have faffed around making up songs on the violin, but can't remember them

Everyone's approach is different from everyone else's.

@Mitch Yes, many are leaving the site or planning to. Apparently, it's all over Reddit and Hacker News (haven't read it yet).

Like, Samuel Andreyev always comes up with the instrumentation first. If he hasn't decided on what exact instruments he'll be using to do what effect, he can't write anything. There'll be no piece. There won't be a single note.

@RegDwigнt Well, enjoy!

9:16 PM
Me, I'm from the rather opposite extreme. I like to think of music as something that has to work completely independently of the instrumentation.
Thanks. Good night.
@Cerberus lol Reddit still exists?
These days saying "it's all over Reddit" is like saying "my mom posted it on Facebook, haven't you seen".

Haha.

@marcellothearcane also yeah on the violin I'm finding you absolutely have to record yourself. I can remember a couple minutes worth of music that I've improvized on the piano or guitar. On the violin, it's all gone from my memory the very second that the sound is gone from the air.

Yes, apparently so.
@marcellothearcane Sorry for being slow. What Jeff Atwood did was curse and throw swear words at many of the most respected users of this site, tell us the whole site was bad and ought to be close (I think), and he treated one of our most respected, most knowledgeable moderators, Kosmonaut, so poorly that he felt forced to leave the site.
It was a disgrace.

Yeah I must say in light of that in particular, the current shit isn't even kindergarden. That's an insult to kindergardens.
So I don't agree at all with your assessment that what Jeff Atwood did was nicer.
Maybe in scale. But not in substance.

@RegDwigнt Not nicer, but smaller in scale, yes.

9:24 PM
@KitZ.Fox well most of that is just spilloff from the US.
Like McDonald's and Hollywood.

Some sites have so few mods left that they can't function any more.

Our site has no mods left and it still functions fine.

One of the mods on Latin has already left, and the other two are considering resignation as well.

I literally and honestly do not understand why.

@RegDwigнt Except that you probably do all the things as you always have...

9:25 PM
Who sent them what that they had to sign but couldn't?
Nobody ain't sent me shit.
@Cerberus my life has been flipped upside down in the last couple years.
It seems you are forgetting how I wasn't even in here for like nine months in a row.
I'm all live and let live now, like.
Haven't handled a single flag in years.
It's the first line in the Theory of Moderation. Do as little as possible.
That's fine by me. Agrees with Einstein and Adès and Pascal and who knows how many other fine people.

9:39 PM
@RegDwigнt I haven't forgotten!
This place was better when you were still the main active mod.

Haha. Coming from you that really means something.
You are the one who always upholds the live and let live flag. Colored in all shades of gay.
And I'm always like what are you talking about, I've only closed 5000 questions today. Let me close another 5000, then we'll talk.
Anyway. Yeah I've closed like 5000 questions now. And I've banned people for three years like. But I've never gained any authority out of that.
Closing a question is not authority.
My authority comes from me sitting in here being a regular idiot talking about music and video games and shit. Mostly shit.
From there you can easily deduce who I am and what kind of shit I will or won't put up with.
Even if you still disagree with me 50% of the time. Even if you disagree with me 100% of the time. But you know exactly where I'm coming from.
The only true power of any critic lies in the consistency of their voice.

@RegDwigнt See, that's the trouble. We never seem to agree or disagree. Our conversations are of the Schrödinger's cat variety, yet even when we open the box we can't tell if the cat is alive or dead.

9:54 PM
@Robusto If I ever die in here, tell my wife hello.

I'm more likely to tell your wife "Oh, hell ..."

You misspelled "To hell ..."
So when are you resigning your mod duties in protest? I know you aren't a mod yet, but I hear there's lots of openings.
