Was moving my computer, and what I thought was a convenient and sturdy hand-hold... was not. The front panel came off and the pc fell 3 feet directly onto it's back.
Everything's fine internally (a couple SATA cables came off), it boots... but the front panel usb/audio connections had their pins bent.

I don't like the idea that they're making this a "girls can do fighting too" because that's neither the message of the original fable nor the message of the original Disney animated film.
> According to The DisInsider, Mushu, a character that was voiced by actor Eddie Murphy in the original Disney animated film, will be replaced by a Phoenix in the live-action remake. That isn't the only change the site is reporting, however, as it goes on to say the movie will only use the original music as instrumentals, instead of having the characters sing the songs.
No singing is a good choice, even though I really like the music in Mulan.

Q: Why does the move Leech Seed have so many odd quirks?

forestThe move Leech Seed sets a volatile status on the opponent Pokemon, draining its HP. However, I've noticed there are several strange quirks that are unique to this move that make me think it is somehow implemented differently from the other moves. It's not the only move that casts a volatile stat...

12:53 AM
Is there anything wrong with the above question? I got a downvote but no explanation, so I've been looking through the rules to make sure it's acceptable, and it appears that it is. Is there something specific I should do to better make my question fit the format of this site?
I wager that the reason for the DV was because I posted some code, though I have no need for programming help and only posted it in case it was useful, since the typical places I looked for an answer (Bulbapedia, etc.) were of no help.

1:07 AM
The question seems to be asking whether Leech Seed is coded in a unique way, which isn't really something that's in our wheelhouse.

@Yuuki I already know it's coded in a unique way. I want to know why it behaves differently. The only reason the code is there is in case it helps someone else find the answer faster.
As far as I know, questions about glitches and game quirks are on topic.

The question looks fine. Sometimes someone random will just decide that they don't like something or other about the question and downvote it. It costs 0 reputation so I'm sure some people just go around downvoting because they can.

oh
Well hopefully it gets an upvote before someone reflexively downvotes a -1 question.
Should I remove the code so it looks less like I'm trying to get someone to analyze the code?

No

Ok, I'll keep it then.

1:15 AM
You explained that it was there just in case it helps, and what it does, making it clear that no analysis is fine.
The only way I could see improving this question (and I don't know anything about Pokemon) would be giving examples of other moves it is different from.

Well, all of them.
It's the only move I've ever seen that behaves that way.

Oh, well I guess if I played Pokemon I probably would've known that.
And someone upvoted it anyways, and I did too, because that is the type of question that is good on Arqade: it asks about some type of quirk, bringing it to the attention of people who might not have known about it and providing a search result to other people with the same question.

Yeah. Honestly I was surprised no one else noticed this, or at least talked about it on the popular Pokemon forums or wiki. It seems like it has some pretty surprising quirks.

All the more reason to point it out then

I see some new faces. Welcome

1:21 AM
o/

Hello

Who, exactly, is being welcomed?

Heck if i know.
Maybe forest?

Maybe. I'm new here at least.

... although I guess I'm not really in a position to speak, having come back from a three-month break only a week ago.

1:26 AM
Oof. I took a break after the mod election
Not 3 months tho.
I am still shooting to have visited the site 365 days in a row.

It was very unfortunate: I got to 74 days and then got the flu and forgot one day.

I imagine a curl script in a cron job to log in would be cheating. :P

I am at 292 days (i think?)

Yeah I've been just keeping the page loaded on my phone and refreshing it right after I turn off my alarm. It's basically a habit now.

1:31 AM
Lol. I check the review queue every day.

@forest It wouldn't just be cheating, it probably wouldn't work

> The exact amount of activity required to count as a visit is not public information
Oh well that would be easy to find out, and easy to automate with curl.

Heck I have been doing my stuff legit. My level of insanity is unsurpassed

Bruh hecking people with integrity.
Fun fact: there is no adjective form of the word integrity.

1:35 AM
Integral

No that's the area under a curve in calculus or a person who is central to a group.

I think it's integrous.

Oh maybe

Heck.

1:36 AM
Idk if that's an actual word though.

Yep it is, according to en.wiktionary.org/wiki/integrous.
> In common usage, integrity is much more common than its adjectival form, integrous.[1] Most speakers and writers opt for an etymologically unrelated synonym — such as honest, decent, or virtuous — when trying to express an adjectival equivalent of integrity.

Hmm... interesting.

@TheMattbat999 It depends how you define insanity. One could say that my tendency to systematically go through old questions and edit/flag them could easily be considered insane by some.

Well I think we can all agree that in practice, there is no adjective form because no one uses the word 'integrous'
yeah I wondered about that

@pppery nah. You are simply doing the community a service. I have noticed you correcting alot of tags for Minecraft questions... kepe up the work

1:38 AM
yeah it's nice to have someone updating old stuff

Idk, i seen pppery was the editor in almost every review queue of late.

Can't watch it. Was is it?

And then there's me trying to give people harry potter powers gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/353437/…
sethbling making an enderclock
It's a custom datapack where an enderman places blocks in a clock that updates itself.

Whoa. Sounds complicated

1:43 AM
Yeah it's pretty epic. No clue how it works, but very epic.

How i survived many of my best video game moments still confuses me to this day
Like in Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind when i got jumped by 4 Ash Vampires and still managed to win.

@TheMattbat999 But the task I'm doing is something that should not be necessary; the community should have caught these mistagged/off-topic questions when they were posted, not required me to find them years later.

@pppery true, true

Strange Things 3 was fantastic
cc @fredley probably

I has a sad :( I am going home and not taking my girlfriend with me

1:54 AM
That sucks...

Yeah I started putting the mc version in all my questions like (Java Minecraft 1.14.3) to make that easier, but it hasn't really caught on yet.
@pppery

@Nik3141 What were you pinging me about?

I hardly ask questions at all. I suck at asking good questions.

I've never asked a single question in any StackExchange site.
And have 3.5K rep on one site and 2.9K on another

Wow. I have asked a few here and there. My highest voted answer (and post) was actually my simplest.

1:58 AM
Oh just the thing about the question titles.

What?

oh ppery asked about why I pinged him
Honestly the only reason I signed up for this site was the Minecraft wiki sucks at explaining what commands do and I wanted to write a datapack to allow you to bottle your xp by throwing a glass bottle in a cauldron.

I'm apparently so prolific at retagging questions that I reached the too-many-pending-edits limit in only ten minutes

Idek why i signed up honestly, but i have made a name for myself.

2:02 AM
I feel like there should be some sort of exemption for people who are trying to fix other people's bad grammar.

Exemption from what? The suggested edits limit? There is, and it's called "have >2k rep"

but you have 7.3k...
oh is the suggested edits limit different from too many pending edits limit?

Heck you don't have any real power around here till you get a diamond.

The rep number shown in chat is an sum across all sites. I have 3.5k rep on CGCC (formerly known as PPCG), 2.9K on stack overflow, but only 500 on arqade.

oh

2:04 AM
Lemme go and review some of your edits...

yeah I tried doing the fixing grammar thing but then got yeeted for "changing the OP's original meaning"

@TheMattbat999 I strongly disagree. I've probably caused over 100 questions to be closed by using only the "flag posts" privelege that I earned at 15 rep (AKA at the beginning, because I got +100 assoc bonus)

...hard to determine meaning when there's no sentence format

@pppery i meant classic "Mod Abuse"

I've come across what I consider Mod Abuse twice already, when a mod reviewed a question with four close votes as "Leave Open"

2:07 AM
~~I am kinda joking around, but ok~~

see I feel like people are too eager to close and put questions on hold, rather than just using their brain cells to figure out what the person means and edit it. If the person meant something different, they can re-edit to fix it.
but maybe that's the expectation on this site idk

I had a Pokemon question almost ruined because someone changed what i meant.

unfortunate

That was long ago, before i started this account.
Back in the dark ages

lol

2:09 AM
No, no, no. no, no. All closeworthy questions must be closed, lest they fall into the backlog for users like me.
22 mins ago, by pppery
@TheMattbat999 But the task I'm doing is something that should not be necessary; the community should have caught these mistagged/off-topic questions when they were posted, not required me to find them years later.

in the linked question it was pretty clear what they were asking, I think people just didn't want to bother with getting them to say it explicitly

Refusing to close questions contributes to that backlog

Some questions really have to be closed.

I'm not suggesting not closing bad questions, I'm suggesting not immediately closing non-good and non-bad questions
meaning ones that are right in the middle, average, run of the mill questions

Q: How to make 20 minutes (1 day) delay?

Tomáš ZatoI am getting tired of manually managing my chicken farm, so I have invented this automated design: The step from eggs to chicken is easy, and it's even simple to make it happen in batches - every time dispensers are filled using hoppers, a comparator activates clock until they're empty again. ...

Other duplicate questions attract 14 upvotes and go unclosed for six years.

Yeah I find it really annoying that I will spend 4 hours thinking of how to word a minecraft-commands question in order to not have it downvoted into oblivion, and then someone comes along with this: gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/353776/…
19 upvotes

Yep, things can get messy in a community of over 100k people

what does marking duplicates actually do? does it mark it as a bad question or does it just provide a pointer for more possible answers for later people searching?

Ugh my flight has been delayed an hour and a half

unfortunate
Unfortunately, thinking about how to say this question for about 6 hours (during the entirety of the school day) did not save it: gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/350881/…

Q: What is the Enderman's java file?

SydneyI am trying to find the enderman's java file (Model file) and I haven't been able to find it in the models folder of minecraft. Any idea on where the model is or where I can download the actual JAVA file from?

0
Q: How to give a named item!

Zappy I have been trying to use the /give command to give a named book but I can't seem to give it. I keep on getting the output of * Line 1, Column 2 Missing '}' or object member name. Please help!

The enderman java file one isn't a bad question in meaning, but is executed poorly. Generalizing it to ask where to find a mob model would make it more search findable and an actually useful question.
And fixing all the problems with terminology inconsistencies and the typos.
That second one is very bad, and I'd suggest marking it as a dupe to my question from about a month ago
ill link it
@pppery It is basically a dupe of this question: gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/350591/…

No, it's not. That's a Java Edition question and the new one's a Bedrock Edition question.

Oh Bedrock edition nvm

ye

2:24 AM
heck yeah
Continuing to throw money at my screen until a cadence of hyrule soundtrack appears in my bandcamp account or whatever

@Nik3141 Said descisions must be taken with far more sureness. </joke>. Seriously, though, I've been so reluctant to provide my example because the question passed the close vote review queue, despite in my opinion clearly deserving closure, so I'm worried that linking it here may be improper.

Ben
Hey, can someone help me find a question/answer about Minecraft mob skin templates? It was asking about like, where to put the head in the png file, etc.

Why? Discourse is free here.
The one with the enderman java thing? I think it was asking about where to locate the default one that comes with minecraft

Ben
@Nik3141 Yeah, there was another one earlier, about the layout of the png file. There's a specific template to follow - this panel is the face, this panel is the back of the head, etc

Oh ok

2:32 AM
@pppery The big thing to remember is that those reviewing may not necessarily be Minecraft experts.
There's nothing in the process to guarantee reviewers are knowledgeable about the problem space.

I don't think that's why, but OK, I'll bring the question up anyway.

Q: How many possible outcomes will there be to my Minecraft lock?

SoupI just built a lock for a door in Minecraft. The user has to pick the correct four colors out of twelve. Order doesn't matter. What is the probability of the user guessing the correct colors?

I guess it's too much to ask people who don't know about a subject to not vote on it

That problem doesn't even have anything to do with Minecraft.
It's pure stats.

Well it does
but it's just combinatorics

Some questions, despite being purely mathematics with a tangential relationship to video games, get 12 upvotes, go unnoticed for 8 years, and get 3 leave open reviews.

2:35 AM
like just do 4 nPr 12

@ppery thanks for this absolutely useless comment 8 years later. glad you weren't here back then. — Soup Jun 26 at 15:48
... and attract a mildly aggressive comment from the poster when I comment on theirt off-topicness.

Question standards have changed over the past 8 years. That's almost the entire lifetime of the site
And honestly, your comment wasn't going to do anything. It notifies the author and maybe one of the other commenters, but it doesn't otherwise bump the question or get it on anyone's radar

I did flag the question as well, on June 26, a few hours after that comment.

There are so many dumb minecraft-commands questions that we should just make a wiki on everything a beginner could want to know about commands.

It's best to just flag; commenting doesn't do much except to give them a target.

2:39 AM
idk if that's against policy with the whole Q&A thing

@Nik3141 Sound like something that would be good, just not here

@Nik3141 We could...but I feel like that would be a massive undertaking. Arqade isn't meant to be a general reference site for all things for all games.

Yeah but then we refer them to an outside site, which apparently is also discouraged

@Kevin Back home to Tulsa. I've been up in Michigan visiting family
Currently in St. Louis for a (supposed to be) short layover

I mean I am making a youtube series on how to do datapacks: I'd be willing to write it but only if it isn't going to be crushed as soon as it's posted.

2:42 AM
That really looks like something that belongs on an actual wiki, not a Q&A site

yeah ig

If you feel these issues with Minecraft and how we approach them are flawed, I encourage you to post about it on Meta. If you feel that it's a problem with the community itself, you can post an answer on our Community Check-in meta post.
Actually, posting about it in the check-in is probably a good idea, regardless.
Minecraft tends to attract our largest number of low quality questions, I think. If you have a good way to help fix that, we're listening.

3:55 AM
@Frank Why is that anyway. Is it just that a lot of children are asking questions?

@forest Possibly because on the surface Minecraft is easy for persons of all ages and skill levels to get into. But it also has a fairly complex underbelly that can do many fancy things. Things that tend to require a more in-depth understanding than the average player does (often, yes, because the asker is younger)

user15026
@GnomeSlice its so lovely. I like it very much.

5:15 AM
to be honest it's not just Epic is to blame (though still a dick move that Epic is only doing to to take the monopoly for themselves and fuck the consumer), it's the studios behind these remasters who want more money. sure we're not entitles to free/discounted remasters on the same platform but doing so would foster a better relationship between a studio and the customer.

@Memor-X That kind of thing is why I pirate exclusively.
If game companies didn't pull moves like that, I would be far more sympathetic with them.

7:36 AM
@forest Unless I'm reading this wrong, this looks like it's asking why the developers had to (or decided to) code something a certain way, which is not really our scope. It might be on-topic on Game Dev, but I'm not familiar with their rules

7:53 AM
@Wrigglenite No, it's asking why Leech Seed behaves as it does and why it is so buggy.
It's not fundamentally different from asking what causes MissingNo.
And it wouldn't be on-topic at Game Dev because I'm not developing a game.

Possibly retrocomputing
I'm not sure I understand the question as it's written. It might be worth rephrasing it, if possible

Are you familiar with gen III Pokemon? I'm not sure how to rephrase it. What I've observed is that Leech Seed behaves differently and does not obey certain statuses like Attract.
At least, I can't think about how to rephrase the two quirks I've listed.
@Wrigglenite Can you be more specific, anyways? That'll help me focus my efforts.

"Why" questions can be a bit of a grey area here

Hm, should I word it as "what causes" then, instead?

We're better at answering "How" or "Where", for example
Well, it's not a matter of phrasing

8:01 AM
Because I'm curious for the root cause, not an opinion on intention.

By root cause, do you mean what in the code causes it to behave this way?

No. Im curious if there's any technical reason for this. For example "Leech Seed is a special move and doesn't interact the way you'd expect because this-and-that". I don't need to be pointed to the code.
If the answer is that it's simply a bug, I'd be happy with that as well.
By "technical reason", anything from an in-universe answer to an answer explaining some fact about Gen III that I didn't know to the simple statement that it's a bug would suffice.

Technically, only the developers could categorize it as a bug, so some members of the community might see that as developer intent

Even laymen refer to bugs in games without being developers though.
I don't see how it's different from a question like "Why do I get stuck in this wall if I walk into it from an angle" or something, and I've seen questions like that. I mean if it's totally off-topic, I'll delete it, but from my quick check of the help center and looking for related questions, I concluded it was topical.

It's not closed, so the community has not decided (yet?) that it's off-topic
Which in the end is the only real way to see if something is off-topic

8:12 AM
I see.

I'm just providing a reason why people might be voting for it as off-topic, and downvoting it

Are there votes for it to be closed as off-topic? I don't have sufficient rep to see.

Generally, without looking at the code, I'm not sure what kind of answer one can provide other than "because it works that way"

Then what about questions about MissingNo that are accepted?
Those didn't require code, despite having technical answers.

Again, the real measure of whether a question is off-topic or not is, fortunately or unfortunately, whether it is closed or not- that is, whether the community thinks it's on-topic or not
It can make matters confusing when trying to draw lines

8:15 AM
Ah. That's why I asked if there were existing close votes on it. If so then I think I'll remove the code so it doesn't look so much like a generic programming question at first glance.

Some areas are more blurry than others, and the subject of some questions might be popular enough to push people to vote it to stay open
There is no objective off-topic/on-topic decision, for better or worse

ah

But your question is probably going to stay open

Well I guess that's what community consensus and Meta are for.

It has received two votes so far, I can't see it exploding

8:17 AM
I think it received two down and four up (just from memory).

Sorry, two close votes

ah

I do think this kind of edge case might be better handled on meta, though. If the question gets closed or if you just would like more opinions, feel free to ask there
I expect the answers to be mixed though, as shown by the score and the close votes
I think the question would benefit from a better explanation of the kind of answer you're expecting, though
Just to clear up the confusion

There. I've completely removed the code since I do think it made it look like a game dev question.
I'll try rewording it to better explain what I'm looking for as well.

Yeah, the code probably gives off a "why was it coded this way?" feel

8:24 AM
I thought that since the first DV but someone else told me I should keep it, so I hesitated.
Especially when more than half the post looks like a Stack Overflow question. :P

It's relevant information, but it's probably better suited in an answer than in the question

yeah

> I've noticed there are several strange quirks that are unique to this move that make me think it is somehow implemented differently from the other moves
I think the word "implemented" here also gives off the impression that you're asking about code

Yeah I should reword that as well. My first guesses are always about the technical side of things.
right

If that's not what you're asking, it should be a little clearer

8:32 AM
Yeah I changed it.

This is one of those questions that is interesting but also might veer too far into the technical side of things, meaning people might think it's unanswerable here
It's probably not going to get closed, but I don't know if you'll get a satisfactory answer

My guess is I won't, otherwise it'd likely be explained on Bulbapedia already.
But it doesn't hurt to try.

1 hour later…
9:51 AM
Singapore Netflix has Haruhi TV series and the movie
Strangely it has both broadcast and chronological order, under two different items with the exact same. I’m sure this is not confusing at all.

Good thing I don't use Singaporean Netflix. I couldn't stand to see the Endless Eight again.

You know you can just skip ahead since this is streaming, right?
They aren’t putting this out one episode a week (although it would be hilarious if they did force you to wait a week between each episode for the proper Haruhi experience)
I wish there was a filter to get rid of all the soft core porn anime which Netflix has somehow accumulated over the years

Ave
10:08 AM
honestly I have no fucking idea why I am still paying for netflix
I don't use it
yet I pay for 4k
sure my mom uses it rarely but why am I paying for it

If you want you can use mine. No 4K though.

Ave
thanks for the offer
but i don't think that my mom would be very happy if she couldn't watch black mirror or whatever
in other stuff
new dedi new dedi new dedi new dedi bridge I'm excited

The thumbnail for Rosario to Vampire on Netflix is a character licking soft serve ice cream off her face and hands which is very classy and definitely appropriate
@Ave Neat, how much are you paying?

Ave
@PrivatePansy 25eur for this
going from a SB24 which I paid 21eur for
which had i7-2600, 16gb of ddr3, and 2x3tb drives on raid1

That’s quite a lot of hardware for €25

Ave
10:14 AM
I'll go for raid1 again so we're at a loss of 1tb usable space
but these are enterprise drives sooo
@PrivatePansy it's server auction- it's not fresh hardware
currently the SB24's drives have very significant power on hours as a result
27169 on drive 1, 57102 on drive 2
and one is a WD Red while other is a Seagate Barracuda
so especially drive wise you pick the short straw

At least they aren’t the same manufacturer or age so you won’t get simultaneous failures

10:46 AM
I don't know if I can do this. I'm back to work this morning. I dropped a tray of bread already by mistake and like screamed at it

11:12 AM
@PrivatePansy You do know that Netflix thumbnails are based on what Netflix thinks is appealing to you, right?
Like, Netflix has dozens of thumbnails for each series and they often switch them around to see which makes you click more

11:26 AM
if a CPU has 12 cores and it's base clock rate is 3.8 GHz, can i expect that to be for even only 1 core is used? or is that the speed if all the cores are in use?
like i'm asking because i have been told that Emulators don't use more than 1 core and Emulators are one of the main things i play

@Memor-X Each of the cores will run at 3.8 Ghz

@Nzall ok thanks

I think the reason they are now focusing on cores is because they stopped focusing on the Clock Rate
If I am remembering right, Intel once in an event apologized, and said that there is no need to it be faster or something like that, so they are focusing all research on cores

Yeah, at this point clock rate has pretty much reached a peak
I think Intel has a server CPU with 56 cores
And AMD has a consumer CPU with 24 or something like that

Which, to be honest, you have to be pretty hardcore to use all that

Depends on how well optimized the product is you're using

Also, I am not sure how Windows do its threading. I am unsure if there is a setup or configuration to do something like "Nothing else uses this core except X"
I know you can force something to be on a specific core

you need to set process affinity
Oh wait, that's for "only use this core", not "only use this core for this program"

Ave
haha yes
new server has 2 WD Reds with 45139 and 45140 uptime hours
they'll both die at the same time won't they
at least serial numbers are fairly different

Q: Does Windows have a "this core may ONLY run this program and should otherwise be idle" setting?

NzallSomeone in The Bridge, the main chatroom for Arqade, our gaming site, asked whether they can fully dedicate a CPU core to a specific program, to the point that if that program isn't active, the core isn't either. https://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/50945749#50945749 Also, I am ...

are nouns, verbs, adjectives etc "grammar" as a group or is there a different name for it?
@Nzall that is not always true
many cpu's (especially mobile) throttle cores as more of them kick in

Q: Was Pandaria, Broken Isles, Kul'Tiras and Zandalar also affected by the Cataclysm?

SimonSI was wondering if Pandaria, Broken Isles, Kul'Tiras and Zandalar were also affected by the cataclysm. When questing through these places, none of the NPCs say something about strange things happening over the last years, the earth shaking or anything. So my question would be: Were these plac...

@Chippies if just words, not necessarily? Context?

@Chippies Grammatical relations

@Chippies Lexical Categories

Oh
Wow
There are tons of terms for everything
So an adjective is a lexical category of a grammatical relation?

@Nzall Yes, I know the thumbnails are automatically generated, and like every part of its recommendation algorithm it’s somehow precisely tuned to give me shows I never want to watch

Q: What are the exact effects of luck?

Q: How did the Hive achieve space travel?

David YellAs we've seen across the Destiny franchise the Hive have used ships to travel across the galaxy and also to deploy troops to the surface of worlds. As a seemingly unintelligent species, how have the Hive achieved space travel?

Wait so Lazers 2.0 just brings up any new questions from Arqade?

Yes

oh
interesting

1:50 PM
I assume those are protected against XSS

It just grabs it from gaming.stackexchange.com/feeds so probably

Hmm, I want to try and see if adding
to the start of the title breaks that
but I'm not entirely sure where I should create that question, and chances are they already checked for it

it looks like it sanitizes text based on
Were Pandaria, Broken Isles, Northrend, Kul'Tiras and Zandalar also affected by the Cataclysm?

Thought as much. You don't become the biggest programmer-related site on the web without accounting for such easy things
<[[!CDATA probably also is escaped
Oh wait, it tried to do something to that
time to check the sandbox

yes I assume it throws it in makehtmlsafe or whatever before it goes into the feed
