6:03 PM
Or ill cooperate in solving the issue here and suggest we ask the room itself the nature of why it gets disrupted by me

@terdon: Are you a woman?

No

I didn't think so...at least you know you would be attractive as one if you so decided :p

Hmm, those people really don't like fork.
> Fork is an anachronism: a relic from another era that is out of place in modern
systems where it has a pernicious and detrimental impact.
Don't hold back now. Tell us what you really think.

I'm so forking mad right now my whole kernel is disrupted

6:12 PM
Microsoft is just bitter because their attempts to implement fork results in a blue screen of death. And their attempts to replicate fork resulted in a blue screen of death. And their blue screen of death resulted in a blue screen of death

screen lives matter Jesse where are the moderators at this point my Jesus God Spirit
this is basically what Microsoft are attempting to cover up by making me out to be mentally unwell for all of those that are WOKE youtube.com/…

MS is better because Unix is outdated 70s technology.

Well played I can see this is going to just escalate to the point my feelings are injured

@FaheemMitha: Have you made any progress with your luggage box?

wow that takes me back, I wouldn't be so casual first day if I knew the following 3 years at that school, literally next door to a rural prison with a huge number of inmates, and the nature of the social environment was very much like a war zone

6:24 PM
@Jesse_b Not really. A bunch of maintenance has been going on. Mostly plastering, waterproofing, and some waterproofing. Not by me, of course.
Fortunately, it's mostly done.

Yeah stuff like that is really disrupting. I hate having work done on my home. Although I suppose running an airbnb would probably be very disrupting for me as well

Well, ok not in a literal sense oc there wasn't constant gore but you were constantly fearing for your life which I may or may not have antagonised its hazy
lol Airbnb I gotta love ideas like that
but I guess it depends what the laws are on the level of survelliance that's allowed for your investment property. I mean I don't have any sense of shame or concern about being watched or on camera so never really thought about it but that would be my concern if I owned a suite of mortgages
i mean houses
mortgage is a synonym for house ownership

@Jesse_b The Airbnb is not too bad. The room is actually in a different building. Which helps.
Though when guests are difficulty, that's not so good.
And one tends to do a bunch of correspondence which often doesn't lead anywhere.

@FaheemMitha Ah yeah that's pretty cool. Yeah my biggest problem would be the ability to walk around my house half dressed

@Jesse_b Yes, that can be an issue. Especially with female guests.

6:37 PM
I'm also just not particularly fond of people, especially when they are in my home

Unfortunately, this building is owned by the family Trust, which is basically non-functional.
And maintaining old buildings isn't cheap. Even in India.

pick your suburb with air bnbs. I mean I hate to be suburb racist because ive lived in the whole spectrum socio-economically speaking but for safety pick your suburb

Not to mention the issues of figuring out what needs to be done and who to get it done by, in a place where standards and ethics aren't exactly dependable.
So, if I want a command called from Lua to fail on error, like say exec, would it make sense to pipe standard error to Lua standard error? Is that actually something one can direct standard error to? Just asked this on #lua.

The best means of monitoring guest difficulty levels in real time ive seen was the method employed by a Muslim family in one of the not so great suburbs. The most just did a lot of trips walking the kids to get sound data lol but yeah u get what I mean if they are going to be difficult they are going to be stupid, and the first sign of the danger zone is an increase in volume there
The most = the mother I do not get how that happened
well not danger danger, just property damage and or a forensic clean up
bleach is cheap but all the etc probably isnt
oh well and or the stupid dead person in the house
which is what really brings a tear to my eye in real time of course
well I guess it could have easily been me at a lot of points in hindsight
i have mortality realism issues

ok, we can get back to ed questions, now

6:52 PM
well what is it and I have an excuse for not bothering to google, its only two words you cant expect me to study a talking horse in depth
unless its a horseman in the magical realm of horseman and not a bojack variety which is obviously hate speech content
two characters
and I apologise to the user @terdon for the false gender assumption and have compiled some content with a vital social message on my you tube in a playlist entitled feminism to repent youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0QCB-CB0yElcQj_61tJwqvtyLC35Hm-_

@Adam enough. Either take part in an actual conversation, or stop posting.

Second what @terdon said, @Adam -- if you're not talking to someone, it'll look like rambling, which may cause people to block you, which ... just makes for more rambling since fewer people see what you're saying

tee 'em up! :)

I think I may have misinterpreted that statement though now that I read it again.
> It does not report the current filename or line number, or even display the results of a change to the text, unless requested
I think it was only referring to the ability to display the results of a change?

what's that similar phrase about UNIX -- it's not user-hostile, it's just very picky about who its friends are

Does anyone know a better way to get text from a SE answer than cutting and pasting with a mouse?

@FaheemMitha You don't want to use a mouse at all?
You could tab your way to the edit button and then ctrl+a, ctrl+c

7:15 PM
@Jesse_b I'm fine with using a mouse. But for some reason I keep getting just portions of the text.
Never mind, got it.
I explicitly selected Copy this time. Maybe that helped.

ok I do not want to be blocked by anyone so yes ok point taken

@FaheemMitha if you're into more clicking, you could go to the revision history and select the "source" link, then Control-A on that subsequent page

i get why i am being penalized but i am actually trying my best to tone myself down

@JeffSchaller What does Ctrl A do here?

@FaheemMitha typical short-cut for "select all"

7:18 PM
@JeffSchaller Ah, right. Then select copy?

@FaheemMitha I suppose? "cut" won't do much :)

@JeffSchaller Ok

@Jesse_b u forgot to link the wiki
ok well i didn't say wipe it please link the wiki then

It was a bad question. I've been meaning to try and learn ed anyway so I'm sure I'll come up with some questions for people to downvote =)

lol yeah oh no not metaphysical negative opinion placeholders it is a bit of a joke but better than the popularity contest on other domains\
at least SE is subject specific and a reasonable number of people have a sincere and transparent interest in that subject
I guess if anyone wants evidence that I am doing my best to behave I should present my facebook activity file to the jury but I deactivated it for my own sake unfortunately
and I wasn't allowed to download it anyway

7:29 PM
@Adam here's a simple trick: if you find yourself about to post a third line of text and nobody has answered, it is probably best not to post it.
5

@terdon I've done that =\

For some reason popen only opens one pipe. Which means you can either do standard output or standard error. Yay.
popen3 is referenced in several places, but doesn't seem to be part of POSIX.
That looks like what I want. But the only implementation I've seen for Lua is someone posting on SO.
Oh, and here too. By the same person.

7:45 PM
@FaheemMitha |& ?

@Jesse_b ?

I'm not even sure what you are working on but |& is a method for piping both stdin and stdout

@Jesse_b Oh. I need to interact with the enclosing Lua script.

8:24 PM
Half the people in this room can kick people from it, and yet it never happens

hello @MichaelHomer: How do you do?

Pretty well

9:15 PM
@Jesse_b if you click on someone’s name in chat, you get a pop-up with a bunch of links, one of which is “ignore this user (everywhere)”

@StephenKitt Thanks I found it earlier :) . It just seemed increasingly necessary at the time
I have always been pretty hesitant to ignore anyone's messages in chat platforms because some part of me worries I may miss something good at some point in the future but in this case I think that is very unlikely

1 hour later…
10:30 PM
@Adam This room (like most all chat.SE rooms) is publicly logged; chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/26
(and should be under CC-BY-SA per the terms)

If I have a single line of shell in Bash, how do I get the exit value? And what is succeed and what is fail?
I know this is simple, but I'm tired.
Would just echo $? work after running the one line?

10:52 PM
@Adam you don't seem to be getting the message.
@FaheemMitha yes

@terdon Ok. Thank you.

$ false; echo $?
1
$ true; echo $?
0

I think it should be returning the error code, namely 1. But it's returning 0.
I guess I could take this to the SQLite mailing list.
Is anyone here familiar with SQLite? Actually, I could start with #sqlite.

@terdon your specifications for what causes room disruption are far too non existential. I suppose compile an RFC and ill put in the folder

@Adam I tried to give you a simple trick: stop yourself reaching 3 consecutive lines with no reply. I go have dinner and I come back to a room that has been overcome by your rambling monologues. That is disruptive.

I find the lack of RFC's for the specifications of the relevance to your dinner, the terms rambling and monolog disruptive
would you like me to tell you about some of the rooms I have found myself in and the manner they effected me? it may constitute rambling, but like I said, who knows what your vague rhetoric actually means\
I should also provide a warning that the description of many of those rooms is content that should be for a mature audience only, so yeah I guess the fcc should help out here

I'm sorry, but I am not qualified to explain the norms of social interaction to you. And I am really sorry that you seem to have trouble with this sort of thing, I absolutely get how hard that can be, but this isn't the right place for you to practice.

i appreciate your input on the matter
I'm not qualified to explain normality in reality to anyone either

Now I need to go to bed. I really hope I won't wake up to find this room being used as your personal monologue stage again.

11:21 PM
well yeah i mean i don't mind being blocked so long as it isn't for 6 months at a time like face book, and for idiot reasons like facebook
so be my guest mate if its your room its your room
your reasons are valid so far, but
it does trigger me due to various things
but 1 hr to 12 hrs is fine\

@Adam Then I suggest you remove yourself from the situation.
Go take a walk or something.

11:37 PM
I don't have everything I would require to ensure my safety in what constitutes a random walk at my current location but thankyou for your attempt at advice
