Q: Is my homebrew Awakened Bear race balanced?

SaltiquenI wanted to play an awakened bear, and decided to create my own race. I used JamesMusicus' Basic Race Feature Analysis sheet to create it, but I'd like to know how it would stack up in game. Is the unarmed strike a bit much? Awakened Bear Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score incre...

No because bears are balanced by sleeping so much

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in answer, bad keyword with email in answer, email in answer (247): What Conditions prevent a caster from using Somatic spells? by ryan denise on rpg.SE (@doppelgreener)

Bears are very balanced.

12:36 AM
That's pretty neat

"[DFAE] Ace Squadron's Aces," by Mike Olson on Spirit of the Blank.

1 hour later…
2:12 AM
@Carcer looks like someone changed the word "unknown" to "One Hour Special She-Ra The Deep Sea Diver"... I reverted it

That's quite an edit

@V2Blast lulwut?

5 hours ago, by Carcer
wikipedia confusingly notes that "Season 3 will premiere on August 2nd, 2019. The number of episodes is One Hour Special She-Ra The Deep Sea Diver."

@V2Blast @Ash Now this is a wild Teixcalaanli name.

Huh?

2:23 AM
In A Memory Called Empire, citizens of Teixcalaan have names that are a number followed by a noun. Ordinary names are things like Three Seagrass and Twelve Azaleas. There's a guy named Nine Helicopter and everyone thinks that's pretty funny.
(The names aren't like impersonal "number-word" labels, they're chosen carefully for poetic meaning.)

Ah ok
Seems like it would be long even for them

Yeah, it'd be like a joke name.
> “When I was learning the language,” she said, deciding all at once to share, to offer something back for this little bit of cultural exchange—if they were going to work together they should work together—“we had to pretend to have Teixcalaanli-style names, and one of my classmates—the kind of person who scores perfectly on exams and has a terrible accent—called himself 2e Asteroid. The irrational number. He thought he was being clever.”
Three Seagrass contemplated this, and then snickered. “He was,” she said. “That’s hilarious.”

I'm way overexcited for some GSS right now

Definitely looking forward to it!

@BESW: "One Manchineel"

2:39 AM
I haven't read any books in the last year
do... do most people have favorite architectural features?

@V2Blast as in buildings-wise?

that's what's listed for July-August in that image
"e.g. portico, spire"

:P
I once cheekily called a Windows box "muntin"
(it's retired now)
but seriously, muntins are like my least favorite architectural feature, simply because of how bloody useless they are in this day and age
in fact, I could make a legit argument that muntins are downright counterproductive
as unless you wish to make them purely cosmetic, they'd create a thermal bridge in today's multipane glazing systems
(which can cause not only energy efficiency issues, but can even void the listing on a temperature rise rated frame)

....Seventeen Hypostyle, I guess.
(Assuming short stories count.)
No, wait, wrong noun set.

I have no idea how many books I read in the last year

2:49 AM
Seventeen Bucket.

Ben
What volume are the buckets? And what consistency are the books?

Eleven-and-a-half Brass

("What’s in a Teixcalaanli Name?," by Arkady Martine for tor.com)

hey there @nitsua60

@Shalvenay hiya

2:56 AM
@nitsua60 how're things going? still slammed?

Yup. Calling it a night on the mapping.

I never knew One Direction was a Teixcalaanli band

Six Direction is the Teixcalaanli emperor, but yes, the author herself kept thinking about One Direction... to the extent that she and a friend gave the members of the band Teixcalaanli names.
> Editor's note: For the record, Martine says Harry actually IS named One Direction in Teixcalaanli. Zayn is One Amaryllis, Niall is One Lathe, Louis is One Silicon — or maybe Semiconductor — and Liam is One Expanding Insulation Foam. She also says you can consider this canon. (source)

Lol

@BESW One Silicide?

3:02 AM
@BESW brilliant

(and yes there are things called "silicides" -- they are alloys of silicon and a metal, commonly found in chipmaking as they are formed in situ by diffusion to make low-resistance contacts into buried layers)

@BESW Some Heavy Rain?

Ben
Listening to "relaxing LoZ music with rain". It's nice. The rain patter creates a nice ambiance.
The comments however, think otherwise.

The comments always think otherwise
Even from each other

Ben
Top comment: "I can't climb anymore"
In other news: I had a friend do up another one of my PCs
This is Dunn. He was the cyborg from my Numenera game. He wasn't overly smart, or loveable, but he was resilient.
He got his name because when he woke up, the scrapper that rebuilt him said "Aaand… Done!"

user15026
3:21 AM
@BESW This is AMAZING

user15026
@BESW In the last year? Can I just count from January? Because otherwise I might be a super ridiculous number

Ben
@BESW Four Zephyr

@Ash we can do that?
XD

user15026
Alright, time to count.

If I do that guess I'm 8 silver

user15026
3:26 AM
scrolls aaaaaaall the way back in their GR "read" list to last may

[GoodReads crashes]

Lol
Unless the accept decemals then I'm 8.5 silver

Ben
@trogdor 8 silver, middle name 5 copper

I don't get that

user15026
57 Reflecting Pool.

user15026
3:33 AM
Okay that took way too long to count.

user15026
(Then I had to divide. Math is hard.)

It's a lovely name though.

Kill the math

user15026
I like it.

The math must die

user15026
@BESW hahahaha omg that is an EXCELLENT Teixcalaanli name.

Ah ok
Lol

@Ash 451 Temperature Rise Frame?

user15026
Nah, I haven't hit 451 books in a year ever, the closest I got was 419

Augh 419
Ridiculous XD
I spend way too much time doing other things

user15026
3:39 AM
Last year I didn't quite break 400 (398)

user15026
I....do other things. I just read a lot too. (I also read really fast.)

I've probably read like 50-80 books in one year as a record
Mm I read slower than you I bet
That might be part of it
I like to chew the words with my eyes
Your welcome for that image everyone
No charge

I've clocked well over 200 books one year. But I have less time now. I most of what I read is extremely long and dense

user15026
I read all sorts of things. Some biiiiig things like God Passes By, some smallll things like 1940's kid chapter books.

@trogdor read one more and become 420 Smoke
:P

user15026
3:42 AM
I just read whatever makes me happy at any given point. Sometimes that's a LOT of romances, sometimes its a giant pile of Baha'i Writings, sometimes it's....whatever, really

user15026
I just like reading. :)

That's how I read too, changing only what it typically is
Reading is the first thing I found that absorbed literally all my attention while doing it though

user15026
I usually have two things on the go, a "fun" book and a "thinking" book

It will always be a speacial activity

Ben
@trogdor Well the image I got was of you, glaring hard at a word, to the point where it starts to cringe and wriggle under the pressure on the page. Lol

3:44 AM
@Ben lol

user15026
(although sometimes those things collide like right now my "thinking" book is The Priceless Pearl by Rúhíyyih Khanum which is fun AND thinking. )

I literally envisioned my eye getting huge and eating the book

user15026
@trogdor yeah, I pictured it suddenly having teeth and that was.....weird

Hehehe
XD

user15026
Kinda like a Beholder? BUT WORSE.

Ben
3:46 AM
@trogdor Mmm... a hint of romance... solid plot development... and a subtle twist about 2/3 of the way through. Most enjoyable

@Ash Eye of Cuthulu in Terraria

@Ash darn, you kinda missed the reference :P

user15026
@Shalvenay giggles And this is where I admit I did, because I've never actually read that book

user15026
@trogdor oooh yes

I actually only thought of that after saying it but it's surprisingly close to the picture I had
@Shalvenay oh so you did mean Farenhieght 451

3:51 AM
@trogdor yes

Ben
@Shalvenay I did but didn't. Lol. I thought "that sounds familiar" but was immediately distracted by the number, thinking "wait, is he saying he's read 900 books??"

I was just like, " hmm familiar number there"

Ben
In the past year I've read 8 haha

8 more than some people do
X)

Ben
True

4:02 AM
Last time I checked, if you consume a book, you learn a new spell
If you're concerned about the book's dry and dusty taste, I suggest pairing it with 40 pounds of cheese and some ancient cabbage

@MikeQ so where exactly did you put all my eye spells then?

user15026
@MikeQ cheese makes everything better

user15026
@Ben hey, if you are happy with that, be happy with that! It's not a competition. :p

You best enjoy it, because you can never eat the same book twice

user15026
I read the way other people play video games or knit or collect stamps or go hunting for cool rocks.

Ben
4:06 AM
@Ash Oh for sure. I like the books I've read. I have only disliked a handful. My reaction is probably more along the lines of "where do you get the time" haha

@Ash i used to read like that but now I also play video games and watch stuff and play board or card games sometimes

@Ash my problem is finding the reading material I want to read

Ben
@MikeQ and a nice burgundy

as in, I know the stuff exists
but GFL finding a 2017 NEC Handbook at the local branch library
never mind some of the more exotic stuff

And RPG stuff but that's once a week at most at the moment

user15026
4:08 AM
@trogdor I used to game a lot more but now unless it's mobile stuff or WoW/Hearthstone with my husband I don't super get around to it. (part of the reason I decided to step down from moderating Arqade, a small part.)

user15026
@Ben I read on the bus, I read on my lunch, I read on my walk home...i manage :p

@Ash When estimating one's books-per-year statistics, where do academic papers and research come into play

user15026
@MikeQ I count short stories and novellas so academic papers should count too I think but I mean you count however pleases you!

@Shalvenay NEC?

4:10 AM
@V2Blast National Electrical Code, sorry :)

Ben
@Ash I emulate combat encounters in those situations. I know how I will fight off bandits that block of my escape route when followed down a dark alley, how to escape from rabid direwolves, and even how to dodge homing missiles.

@Ash mm I mean I do actually have more fun doing other things, video games tend to be what I do when I don't have a book I want or that I'm ready for or when I'm rationing a book and don't want to do a group activity,... Geez I guess it's a whole chart
XD
And it's not that I have no fun with video games, but I actually do like playing something like Munchkin or Tea Dragon society card game more

Ben
Can someone please link a meta post about asking homebrew questions?

user15026
@Ben all very good skills.

But the chances to do those things are less frequent and I would probably burn out of them if I was doing them every day because social interaction is required for them

Ben
4:15 AM
Ben's First Homebrew question

user15026
@trogdor if I had people to play things with I would do more of that.

Ben
@Ash I like to be prepared. Lol

user15026
@trogdor oh that is very very true.

@Ash same

4:16 AM
@Ash yeah goes without saying, but I still said it XD

Ben
@Ash @trogdor bring back split screen. Lol
@MikeQ ty muchly :)

@Ben eh,... I think that would be nice but I would have nooooo way to use it most of the time

Ben
Well, I think it's one of those things that's missing from the equation. Almost no games support splitscreen anymore. It's either single player or online.
WE used to have a huge game night once a month, where we'd all go over to one guy's house, there'd be like, 12 of us, and we'd all bring tv's and our consoles, and just spread out through the house and play all sorts of Halo maps and game variants
What I wouldn't give to do that all again
@MikeQ wait, is this for role playing home brew..?
[squints]

4:31 AM
lol
@Ben here you go:
19
Q: How can I ask a good homebrew review question?

doppelgreenerI'd like to post some homebrew material I've made, and I want people to review it so I can ensure it will work well. How can I ask a good question like this? What are our guidelines for handling these questions well as an asker?

Ben
Haha thankyou

Glad to help!
I recently sifted through a few of those in commenting on that "are these 4 homebrew items balanced against one another" question

Ben
@V2Blast I have a similar question in regards to my Corruption system. @linksassin has been working with me on coming up with multiple effects for players to receive, on multiple levels.
So I'm going to ask a "are these 6 status effects balanced against each other".

user15026
@Ben It makes me sad.

Ben
@Ash Same

4:36 AM
@Ben Might also be worth reading this meta

4:57 AM
@Ben Lately there keep being games I'd like to play with people but can't because the only multiplayer they support is splitscreen.

Ben
@Miniman Ah

@Miniman What games are those? More and more I'm seeing online multiplayer only.

@linksassin Cuphead would be the most prominent example.

@Ben @Ash it would be great to have that kind of thing available again but I also just don't have many people to play games with in split screen anymore, I think that's a space RPG stuff and board/card games take up for me now
When it's possible to do at all

A Hat In Time would be another.

5:01 AM
@Miniman ouch yeah that's it's whole own problem too

Ben
@trogdor Which is part of my point. Split screen isn't a main stream thing anymore, so there's no reason to go over and play games with friends.

IE more options is typically good
@Ben mm maybe but I also think I have fewer actual opportunities to do that

Ben
In the stead of that, you replace it with things that can work. I.e. board games/rpgs
Which is exactly what I've done

If I was going to do much gaming with other people on the regular my problem is actually way closer to @Miniman 's
@Ben but yeah this is fair
You aren't wrong about that

Ben
And even if it's no longer a possibility for us, due to scheduling, or whatever, future generations are going to suffer from lack of human interaction.
That isn't through some kind of device

5:05 AM
I think most of the freinds I have now aren't necessarily as interested in the video games I would want to play though
@Ben that's a legitimate concern I think

Ben
@trogdor Yeah, people change, interests diverge. It can be inevitable

I hope we solve it at the very least by choosing to do otherwise

Ben
@trogdor Same

Anyway, for example I would love to play some Skullgirls for example with people in person but I think most people in my circle aren't the biggest fans of fighting games
And I've played it too much so they would need to want to get better at it (assuming again most of them don't play fighters) ,... It would be an unrealistic expectation if they haven't played a lot of fighting games
Stardew Valley has multiplayer though
That might also be interesting in a more relaxed way

Ben
@trogdor I was immediately reminded of Raskulls. Very different game.
I haven't played Skullgirls, I've seen it though.

5:11 AM
The point is yeah, playing video games with other people in the room is more fun

Ben
I did very much enjoy Raskulls though

@Ben I might never have played it if it didn't just happen to be in a Humble Bundle or something my brother got me a while ago

@Ben I mean, speak for yourself - I still take a laptop with me and play games with friends at least once every few weeks.

But I really like it,... Somehow I'm better at it than any other fighting game I've played

Ben
@Miniman well, LAN is another thing. And PC gaming is built for that
Console, not so much
@trogdor Noice

5:15 AM
And I've played,... Some Street Fighter, some Tekken, a bunch of different Soul Calibers, and just a tiny amount of one of the Dead or Alives and one of the,... King of fighters?

Ben
Took me 7 attempts to log in cos it's been so long...

So I've played a fair number of them

Ben
That was my avatar for xbox. haha

And it used to be that I had at least my brother and then also some friends on occasion to play fighters with but that's not the case anymore

Ben
So I'd say that I rather enjoyed Raskulls. Lol

5:17 AM
@Ben seems like it

Ben
@trogdor Honestly I only really played Tekken. King was my main. Haha.

@Ben oh I like King
King is just great

Ben
I had, I think 2 of his 10 move combos memorised. Lol

Just the man body with the leapard head, it's perfect
@Ben I wasn't good with him but I still love him for existing

Ben
And I could win fights pretty easily with him. Except if someone was playing Eddy, and button mashing. Lol
@trogdor Same, which I think is part of the reason why I got gud

5:22 AM
I was best ever before Skullgirls at Soul Caliber, Mitsurugi, Voldo, Talim , and Lizardman (he was just a reskin of one of Cassandra I think but come on, that's obviously the skin I want,... Eww Skin )
@Ben I think the version of Tekken I played the most didn't have him
Either that or he wasn't unlocked or something?

Ben
@trogdor like, T2?

I think so yeah!

Ben
I also played Killer Instinct on the SNES

Seems like the right number
@Ben that I never tried but apparently there is just a raptor in that? Yes please XD

Ben
I think they re-released it for...xbone? But yes.

5:26 AM
His name is Riptor? XD

Ben
A raptor, a cyborg, a flame guy...
Oh yeah, the names were really tacky haha
My favourite was Cynder. You get a lollipop if you guess what his trope was

Being just all on fire

Ben
You win a lollipop! Haha

Lol

I never really got into fighting games very much

Ben
5:30 AM
He was like, molten stuff. His attacks were all about flinging fire at the opponent

I never owned one for the longest time (at least during the time I actively played a lot of video games) so I wasn't very good at them on the rare occasions I played at someone else's house or an event
(not counting Super Smash Bros Melee I guess)

Ben
@V2Blast Button mash.
It's a legitimate strategy

@Ben that's my go-to
I remember using it to decent effect as Talim in Soul Calibur

Button mashing is kinda how you have to start out anyway

I've never advanced beyond it

5:37 AM
If you are going to try to seriously learn what buttons do while playing that's the start you need
@V2Blast that's fine too
Especially if you aren't necessarily interested in doing so

Even when I've looked up controls and tried to do the moves... I'm not very good at actually doing them

Ben
@V2Blast Yeah I found some games were worse than others in that regard.
There was one game (I think maybe the DC vs games) where unless you were using legitimate combinations, you were useless.
Ben's first Homebrew Question. Constructive criticism welcome.
I'm not overly sure I've provided enough relevant information, and I may have provided some irrelevant information.

Guacamelee is free on the Humble Store for the next 2.5 days: humblebundle.com/store/…

6:08 AM
@Ben Oh, we play online. We just sit in the same room to do it.

@V2Blast for me it took a heck of a lot of practice and button mashing and looking up moves, and there are still probably hundreds or so people Better at the game than me

@trogdor Cervantes 4 lyfe <3

Never learned him XD
Honestly it's a lot that I had four characters I knew how to do any combos with at all

Ben
@Miniman The point though is that it allows human interaction more easily. Lol

I mostly just used the move where he stabs both swords into someone, lifts them up, and then throws them.
Ring out >>>>>> knock out.

6:10 AM
@Miniman oh disgusting that got used on me a lot, at least when anyone played him

@trogdor Yeah, I remember it working really well on Talim.

Ring out,... I had a love hate relationship with that

Ben
@Miniman this is triggering me hahaha

@Miniman it's true her reach sucks

Ben
So many times have I come up against an enemy AI that uses this as their primary tactic.

6:11 AM
I think they actually took weight into account, so Talim got thrown way further than Astaroth.

Especially when some people have ridiculously sized axes or great swords from hell
@Miniman huh maybe?

Ben
@V2Blast ty for the edits :)

If so they kinda screwed her over
She's one of if not the smallest character with the lowest reach at least in the versions I played
I liked her speed and moveset though, most of my characters were on the fast end
If you get in and get a hit first the big guys have trouble recovering
Is Astaroth heavier than Nightmare?
Call in your answer for the prize of: being right on the Internet
XD

Astaroth has higher body weight than Nightmare, but Nightmare wears heavier armour.
...I'm not calling you fat, Astaroth, I swear.

Lol
I think that's fair

Ben
6:18 AM
@Miniman He's got higher calcium content

Nightmare is kinda hard to separate from his armor though
It kinda grows on him I guess

Ben
@trogdor He has become very attached

Lol
Yes
That one wins

Whoa! Did you know Astaroth is a golem?

Ben
@Miniman Like I said, higher calcium content XD
(I didn't know that though. Lol)

6:23 AM
@Miniman oh I thought he was a guy like Nightmare had been
Because Nightmare used to be,... Siegfried
I think

Ben
@trogdor Yeah

@trogdor Yeah, he was.

In fact I think I played one where he was Siegfried, and the one after that where he was nightmare but he had a Siegfried skin

Ben
@trogdor I saw one like that too. He didn't have the armour, just the sword

But still the messed up Cuthulu sword
@Ben yeah
Soul Caliber is weird
XD

6:29 AM
Am I the only one who thinks that the series always has been and is still all about Soul Edge, not Soul Calibur, and is therefore inappropriately named?

No
No you are not

Ben
@Miniman [cough] Legend of Zelda [cough]

Because like, you almost never see Soul Edge actually become part of a character

Ben
Haha

I remember thinking about that a lot
Here is nightmare, actually changed from one game to the next Because he found Soul Edge
Meanwhile even the most heroic characters don't find Soul Caliber in game to game cannon
Just in story mode that means nothing in the next game
And I had thought Astaroth and Voldo also had similar things happen to them
And of course Cervantes
It's all about Soul Edge
Err I meant Caulibur up there
Waaay up there where I can't edit anymore XD
In fact I don't think there was even one character who finds Soul Caliber in the continuing story
But I think that might be because they can't afford to say one hero is better than the others
Whereas Soul Edge doesn't seem to be too picky

Ben
6:43 AM
My knowledge is that Soul Caliber != Soul Edge. Soul Edge is the sword, and there is some confusion between the character "Nightmare" and "Soul Edge".

I was given to understand that Nightmare is basically the creature that exists because Siegfried got ahold of Soul Edge and now he isn't Siegfried anymore
and that Nightmare now technically wields Soul Edge,... and may actually like, be Soul Edge because it needed a body
but it's weird
I think they intentionally left a lot to interpretation

Ooooooh...Yoshimitsu has a prosthetic arm. Is there a "ninja with a prosthetic arm" legend in Japan that he and Sekiro are both based on?

I know there is a story of them making some for European Explorers because they were disgusted by those people eating with their hands
I have no idea how true that is though
and all it would mean is they would know maybe how to do a similar thing
?
it might just be that robot arms are cool and ninja are cool and,... bam we combined em
but maybe?
it would definitely be neat

In case you didn't already know, Yoshimitsu is in Tekken as well as SC, so I figured maybe 3 is a pattern.

7:01 AM
I don't remember seeing him in SC
only in Tekken
he might have been one of the characters you only see in SC because they are a specific platform crossover or he may have been in a later version than I have played

Ben
@Miniman [interest levels pique]

naw, Yoshimitsu was in SC from the beginning I'm pretty sure

@Ben I know nothing about the story of Soul Calibur

Soul Edge is the bad eyeball sword that everyone wanted to get

Ben
Then they learned the eyeball sword was bad, so they should look for the soul caliber instead, right?

7:15 AM
@trogdor According to the wiki, he's been in every SC game.
(Although he wasn't in the original Soul Edge game.)

Ben
I just had a cringey thought. The potential that Yoshi and Yoshimitsu were inspiration for one another (I.e. Yoshi from Yoshimitsu, or vice versa)

@Miniman huh

@Ben ...as in the eats everything Yoshi?

I must have though they weren't connected

Ben
@Miniman and poops eggs. Yeah

7:22 AM
> While Mario or Luigi is riding Yoshi, percussion is added to the game's music
Is this for real? I've played a crazy amount of SMW, how have I never noticed this?

Ben
Music isn't really something you notice. It's more atmospheric, usually

@Ben How dare you.

Lol
I notice music a lot
Especially percussion or chanting

7:44 AM
I often notice music over everything else
I've never actually owned a Mario game though
especially one with Yoshi in it

Music is pretty important in games
At least in my opinion

most of the music I've downloaded is game soundtracks
plus a few TV show soundtracks

8:02 AM
That's most of what I have too

Same here.
Protip: spotify has a lot more game OSTs than the list it keeps - you have to search yourself, but it's worth it.

8:30 AM
Huh

8:47 AM
