12:14 AM
@Shalvenay Unfortunately busy--the other two organizers of this weekend's epic are dropping some plates, so I'm going to try and see what-all I can crank out in the next three hours.

@nitsua60 oof

12:35 AM
It's okay--I only have ~40 pregens I need to get statted up. And that's task 1 of about 4 I should try to get through =\

12:50 AM
@trogdor truth!

hey there @KorvinStarmast

1:15 AM
@nitsua60 Dang.

@nitsua60 ouch

Ben
@nitsua60 wow
What's the max amount of rep you can get in a day on one question/answer?
200 isn't it?

1:32 AM
@Ben 200 per day across all Qs/As although bounties and answer accepts don't count against it

Ben
OK. I have received 210 rep for my answer about dodge/disengage as bonus actions. Just well timed votes I guess haha
And 21 upvotes.

Pregens are good. On to the intro-handout. (Then it's maps and finishing stats for the army they're trying to harass.)
@Ben I'm seeing 198 yesterday, 10 more today: rpg.stackexchange.com/users/12193/ben?tab=reputation
Don't forget that the "day" resets on UTC.
But there are a couple of weird edge-cases that can get one over the cap. Bounties and answer-accepts are well-known. Accepted suggested edits also don't count against the cap!

Ben
@nitsua60 Yeah there was one dv on another answer

And then some unvotes can wreak havok.... I think if you un-downvote something you can make an end run around the cap, for instance?

1:50 AM
@Shalvenay ahoy

@KorvinStarmast how're things going? :)

Ok, and with you?
@Shalvenay I just found out, as we walked the dogs tonight, that I am not available for Saturday chatizens. Son in town from San Antonio, family thing saturday night.
Will notify via back room as well to the group

What do you call the leader of a dwarven clan exiled from the larger kingdom?
Patriarch doesn't feel right.

Durkon Thundershield?
Governnor in exile?

Get thee behind me, Burlow.

Ben
1:53 AM
@KorvinStarmast I was going to go with Ironhammer

@KorvinStarmast nods OK here, btw. wondering about one of my sort-of-perennials tho: what Open Lock DCs (for either D&D 3.5 or 5e, your pick) would you give to real-world locks?

@nitsua60 King in Exile? Lord in Exile?
Thain in Exile?

Thain!
Thank you.

@nitsua60 A pleasure to serve

Ben
Thane*? Or is that purely Skyrim

1:54 AM
(of various flavors, that is :)

@Ben Well, I am Inthane if that helps. :p

Ben
@KorvinStarmast Aren't we all?

Each of us in our own degree, yes. That's a good thing. (Or a good thane?)

@Ben I've seen it either, I believe. "Thane" in Macbeth, I just checked.

Ben
@nitsua60 "Thain" does seem more dwarvish, now that I look at it

1:58 AM
@Shalvenay at least 20
But that depends on if it is a master lock, a door lock, a spring lock or a car door lock.

@KorvinStarmast heheheh
yeah, I'd almost be inclined to give the ML#3 a DC of 10
(the newer ones are maybe a little better since they went to ball bearings for the locking mechanism, making them shimproof)

@Shalvenay When you get to gun safe locks you are in the 20's and 30's. If you, shal, have the skill and the tools, that's you with advantage/proficiency, not a lower Dc

@KorvinStarmast yeah, that is true XD

I have been able to defeat a few locks in my day, very few, but I do not have a set like in those videos you gave me a link to a while back.

@KorvinStarmast something like a Medeco or Primus, never mind a good Abus? that's getting up there
and then you have some of the nasty detainer cores out there
Kryptonite's put out some mean stuff in recent years, and there's of course the King of the Hill aka the Abloy Protec2

2:01 AM
Serious stuff like vault locks are as you say, very well put together.
gaaah, being summoned, cheerio!

Ben
I have reached the daily rep cap 7 times (one of those was one of those "edge cases" that @Nits mentioned)

@Shalvenay Nobody who's not proficient should be able to succeed. I don't know if you want to gate that by DC or simply by not calling for the check, though. (I have never trained with locks. I am confident that every lock I've encountered in my life would resist any attempt I might make to pick it.)

@nitsua60 Even D&D is comfortable with the idea that some checks can only be made by people who put points into the skill and have the proper tools.

@nitsua60 yeah, I'm assuming someone has at least some tools to hand (some exploits require more than others -- you can do rapping exploits with nothing but a small mallet, and I don't think bypass exploits are that picky either)
OTOH: there is a reason ML#3s and their off-brand (or other-brand) laminated brethren are popular as training locks for beginner lockpickers though

Ben
@Shalvenay I think a DC of 10 is the equivalent of busting the lock mechanism with a rock, or the appropriate application of heat. One of those "life hack lockpicking" skills. You gotta know a bout about how it works to do it well, but you can do that without knowing how to pick the lock.

2:17 AM
@Ben so, 15-20 for a typical laminated-body lock then? (no ballbearing locking mechanism or security pins, 4 pin core)

Ben
@Shalvenay Yeah.

@Ben nods yeah, that'd put something like a Kwikset in the 20-25 range (although 25 is a stretch), something decent (with security pins etc) around 30 or so, a good high security pin tumbler in the 50-60 area, and above that you get into the good disc detainer cores?
or maybe I'm underestimating the high security pin tumblers....

Ben
@Shalvenay Anything above a DC of 30 would probably be a multi-stage skill check. multiple mechanisms that need to be individually managed
Or, I'd say that any lock that has multiple mechanisms would be a DC >30 mutli-stage skill check, because of multiple mechanisms that need to be overcome

@Ben yeah, multiple mechanisms (like pins & a sidebar) aren't the only thing that will naff you up though

Ben
My knowledge of lockpicking though is that I know you might be able to bust a key-padlock with a rock/proper heat application. Lol

2:22 AM
@Ben brute force only IOW XD
got enough brute force? ;)

Ben
> break in after dark... Bypass security... zzz power tools

Q: How long do Aarakocra live?

Tunto_BuntoI've been trying to find out how long aarakocra live for because I'm creating an Aarakocra character. However, I've found conflicting information across different sites. "Age. Aarakocra reach maturity by age three. Compared to humans, aarakocra don't usually live longer than 30 years." Fro...

Ben
2:40 AM
What's the other mythical animal/monster that is along the lines of "Chupacabra"/"Capybara"? From memory I think it's like a winged snake thing

Coatl

Ben
Yeah that's the one.
Those three are interchangeable in my head. Lol

@Ben lulz, save for the fact capybaras are not exactly mythical XD

Ben
And the fact that chupacabras, and coatls are generally not considered "large guinea-pig like fuzzballs"

2:56 AM
That's like mixing up koalas, kangaroos, and kookaburras

Ben
@MikeQ and cassowaries

@Ben other than their, well...two-pass digestive system...capybaras sound like pretty swell critters to have around

@MikeQ done.

Ben
@nitsua60 For some reason that statement gave me the image of a large, bear-lake creature with gigantic, fluffy ears, that can move extremely fast by jumping, and also flight capable
Not overly smart, chaotically aggressive, and finds everything hilarious
The Koakookaroo

@nitsua60 Bruenor? Thorin?

Ben
3:05 AM
Their relationship with Cassowaries is the same Emus and Western-Australians.

@Miniman Sorry--I meant like a title. Thane's working great =)

Ben
@Miniman And that is why "Thain" sounds dwarvish
I thought it was another dwarfs name, but it's the actual title.

3:26 AM
About to stream our D&D 5e actual-play podcast in 30 minutes: https://www.twitch.tv/events/xedxwDvQQ5ikDBIIw7RZ4w

In a universe adjacent to our own lies a world known as Runia. This world, once peaceful and idyllic, is now threatened by a monstrous being from its prehistory. A group of adventurers known as Whiskey Company have risen up to do what they can to fight this entity known only as Nagat. They have trekked far across the mortal realms in search of the shards of Barrinoth, the Titan of Justice, in hopes of returning him to his full power.

3:39 AM
@nitsua60 Oh, I know.
@Ben You're thinking of Thrain.
I just thought it was funny how commonly the "dwarven king in exile" crops up.
If anyone knows who Matt Soren is, bonus points there.

Ben
@Miniman Yeah.

4:03 AM
We are going live momentarily!

Ben
4:22 AM
@Miniman But, as I linked above, "Thain" is actually from the Tolkein legendarium. I mean, it's actually a Hobbit's Title, but still.

@Ben Yeah, he was all about old, now-largely-unused words.

@kviiri I only got a flag on the question not the answer. So pretty quick.

Q: What would be the game balance implications for using the Gygax method for applying falling damage?

WarFlailAccording to the rules, at the end of a fall, a creature takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage for every 10 feet it fell, to a maximum of 20d6. However, way back in Dragon Magazine #69, D&D co-creator Gary Gygax explained that the original intention was to apply 1d6 damage per ten feet fallen, cumulative....

7:48 AM
@linksassin might help to clarify that you're perhaps looking for official rules (if that), or that you're looking for methods that people have used themselves (linking to Good Subjective, Bad Subjective) and ask people to support their suggestion with an explanation of their own experience in using the method

yea, buddy
but everyone is alive

Winter. Oldest in kindergarten. Can't find his gloves.
I was literally in tears.

Oh boy, I get to look forward to that
At least winter isn't as bad here

@goodguy5 Just remember to take a deep breath every once in a while and ponder their full-time job: teaching you to be a good parent. And the only tool they have (now) is to scream. I've got a lot of sympathy for babies, man.
(And a great appreciation for when they learn to use tool #2: smiles.)

Yea, we "joke" that he's always yelling
"TINY INEFFECTIVE BODY! BABY RAGE!"

12:50 PM
@KorvinStarmast so as not to clutter the comments, what edits on the tarrasque question do you think were bad?

I'm pretty sure my answer would be "the Tarrasque can't drown, silly, I've seen Godzilla come walking up out of the ocean. Also, it's not even a creature (despite the 5e fools statting it), it's a puzzle or possibly a setting." Not sure that'll garner many upvotes, though =\

Now, I'm imagining a civilization of tiny creatures (a la mouseguard) that live on the back of a tarrasque

@nitsua60 hahaha Godzilla is basically the tarrasque of the Kaiju works aren't they?
But I personally really like that take on the tarrasque: it's an unstoppable force of nature/puzzle not a monster encounter.

Or Reach of Titan, a game about struggling against monsters too big to "just fight."

delightfully bizarre

1:02 PM
Tarrasque is a weird RPG topic
it's often discussed but very seldom played

omg, I just realized how funny it would be to have a Tarrasque patron

It's like wish in that regard IMO. It's so iconic and so tempting to use for example, but so rarely ever makes it to the table.
@goodguy5 oh goodness. An Int 3 patron lol

Warlocks are cha based, that's fine

I feel almost like they made a mistake giving stats for the tarrasque. Giving something numerical stats means it can be beaten, and the idea of the tarrasque is a primal, unstoppable beast who wreaks havoc, and then returns to it's slumber. Not meant to just get killed by some sword strokes

Alternatively, have a story that the Tarrasque is the "Hulk" equivalent to some Giant/Titan/Demigod.

1:07 PM
@CollinB I'm with you on this. Of course, this goes all the way back to at least Deities and Demigods, though I'm sure there were "god" stats earlier than that. Once you stat Thor, you want to beat Thor.
(Hell, my friends and I used to run single-elimination tournaments and 'royal rumble' battles with gods' statblocks.)

@Rubiksmoose The title

it doesn't matter how POWERFUL you make the stats. If it has stats, it can be beaten, and so players will try

@KorvinStarmast I thought that was probably it.

dealing with PC logic can be exhausting sometimes

@Rubiksmoose heh, no need to worry about cluttering comments, mxy moved them.
@Rubiksmoose Naut was right though about clarifying the bard college; I was unable to find it via regular search, and was thus not sure if it was a Ravnica thing; I don't do Ravnica.

1:10 PM
@goodguy5 i guess you could use tarrasque as Great Old One patron?

@KorvinStarmast I'll stand by that edit though. It makes the title fit the body perfectly and it seems clear that the title would cause a good answer to answer both parts.

@Rubiksmoose OK, I am not going to mess with it as the question seems to have stabilized. Meets "good enough" standard at the very least.

@KorvinStarmast Yeah it seems like something that might be worth pointing out, but still not worth the homebrew tag.

@CollinB The thought occurred to me, but it doesn't seem quite right, somehow.

@Rubiksmoose yes, for sure.

1:12 PM
@KorvinStarmast I'm with you as well, I thought it was just a college from one of the books I didn't frequent. Though it did stick out as odd to me that it didn't ring any bells.

@goodguy5 same.

@goodguy5 Not enough tentacles.

@Rubiksmoose You don't know that for sure.

the comment about "warlocks are cha based, it's fine" makes me think of....
SEDUCTIVE TARRASQUE
The concept terrifies me

@CollinB Wouldn't that be a Tarrisque?

1:13 PM
@Rubiksmoose this is now the BBEG of my next campaign

hahaha
what have I done.

@Rubiksmoose I don't get the joke

Tarrisque. Risque means sexually suggestive.

ah, I just didn't see it.
I was like "fine. you say it with an 'i' sound instead of an 'a' sound. so what?"

@Miniman He was also into word roots and meanings. His friendship with Owen Barfield seems to have informed a great deal of his deeper imagery. Just read Splintered Light, which sheds some light on underlying stuff that was only well understood after Christopher's Unfinished tales, and later stuff, was published.

1:16 PM
@goodguy5 I mean it was a huge stretch lol.

The Tarrasque is colossal,iirc

@Miniman Barfield's idea of "semantic unity" is an intriguing line of inquiry in how people communicate

How about a giant beast that taxes imports and exports?
Tariffque?

@goodguy5 collossalacious?

Now, THAT is fun to say out loud.

1:17 PM
@goodguy5 I don't think 5e gets bigger than Gargantuan, does it?

oh shoot, that's right.

@Rubiksmoose Nice neologism. What's it mean?

DM: "A deep rumbling sound from the chasm below you awakens your senses to a primal and ancient force, older than civilization.... A creature, larger than the village itself, rises from the depths of the pit.... Roll a charisma save"
PC: "What?" *rolls questioningly "6?"
DM: "It is the most beautiful creature you have ever seen. Thoughts of your wife are forgotten in it's splendor. It winks, and blows you a kiss."
PC: *stares in horror and shock
DM: *Evil smile "The Tarrisque is returned!"

@CollinB PC stares in horror and shock while overwhelmed with desire

@KorvinStarmast you know I can't figure out what it would mean. I was just going with the theme of turning words into more risque forms with regards to this tarrasue XD

1:20 PM
Barbarian: "I WILL BE SINGLE NO LONGER!"

Grr... I can't find a fool-proof way to single-handedly dispatch of the Tarrasque quickly

4:33 PM
@DavidCoffron not even if I offered you 5 silver?

@Rubiksmoose XD

@DavidCoffron Be a shadow sorcerer who can BA shadow step. Makes the effective movement per round be 150 - 160ft for most races...which means they can move faster than the tarrasque on their lonesome, while also having enough mobility to annoy it into chasing them

@illustro Only functional at night, but otherwise theoretically doable...

@Xirema That's the theoretically I've been trying to avoid. What if the tarrasque just doesn't follow
Or gives up after a while

@Xirema also functional at dusk and dawn

4:36 PM
Lay out doggie treats, or tarrasque treats ...

Use Hounds of Ill Omen to cancel their Spell Resistance and spam Polymorph until you burn off their Legendary Resistance.

only requires dim light not darkness

Throw in a Fireball now and then so that it doesn't forget about you.

And use the spell Point variant suggested by the OP of this question rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/148100/…

Although the Hounds conflict with your BA teleportation, so maybe just take the Heightened Spell metamagic instead...

4:38 PM
I was originally pondering a modification on this strategy, but with enlarge/reduce instead of phantasmal terrain. If you burn through it's Legendary Resistances, then true polymorph it as suggested. If it lets itself get reduced, then plane shift to the Plane of Water and gate to summon it. Unfortunately gate and enlarge/reduce are both Concentration, so it doesn't work.
Also, doesn't seem to be a way to force-feed a Tarrasque a potion of diminution

@Xirema The heightened spell meta magic makes more sense
@DavidCoffron sure there is, have it on a pet that the Tarrasque swallows...or flys into it's maw with the potion

@Xirema Although-Although, a Terrasque only moves 40' per round, so you'd only have to teleport every 3 rounds or so.

@illustro Doesn't count as "drinking"
> When you drink this potion, you gain the "reduce" effect of the enlarge/reduce spell for 1d4 hours

@Xirema nope, the Tarrasque has three legendary actions, which it can use to move up to half it's speed

Even with Legendary Actions, if you're the only one they're fighting, they're limited to moving 60', and even with a full party, they're limited to 100'.

4:42 PM
With a full party, if it dashes, it can move 140'
...then people have to contend with an opportunity attack from a Tarrasque
Btw, it has Blindsight, so it can see in the dark out to a range of 120ft!
" (an amount of) liquid that is taken into the body through the mouth:"
familiar flying into a tarrasques mouth with a potion fits that definition :P
Alteratively the US definition, from the same link: "to take in and swallow an amount of liquid through the mouth"

@illustro Still a bit too ambiguous for my taste

It is certainly ambiguous, but so are many things
that we take stances on in the rules

@illustro Are there any creatures who have enlarge/reduce as Innate Spellcasting that are CR 2 or lower?

@DavidCoffron the Counterflux Blastseeker from Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica can cast it 3 time/day
and is CR2
(though it's save DC is only 14)
And the tarrasque has a +10 to it's CON save

@DavidCoffron duergar maybe?

4:54 PM
Duergar can only cast enlarge on themselves

with limitations " enlarge/reduce spell on yourself once (enlarge only)."

Natural Duregar Enlargment.

@goodguy5 For 6 easy payments of 1sp...

If you can stretch the CR to 3 then a Quaggoth Thonot can cast it 1/day

Begone Thonot

@goodguy5 You're getting the shows mixed up. S8E5 was where Frasier hires a guy butler, during the "Niles and Daphne are secretly dating" saga arc.

Wait, is that when the slap bet happens?

@MikeQ No, that's the wrong show. S8E5 was when Radar finally made the decision to leave the M*A*S*H 4077 for good, after realizing that they'll be fine without him.

5:35 PM
can we all pause the joke to notice Xir's new icon (might be a few days old, now. I've been on baby time)

It's weird to think of it as a new icon. It's an old one that I was using on a few of my social media accounts, and I decided to broadly update everything to use the same icon.

@goodguy5 I can't stop noticing!

@goodguy5 No, S8E5 was with the halloween party, where Dwight dresses up in a Kerrigan costume

(Also, let's be honest: the previous icon I was using was garbage. Shrunk to a tiny size, it looked like a pink smear)

@Xirema Was it not supposed to be a pink smear?

5:38 PM

@MikeQ This, and the previous icon, were renders of the Mandelbrot set, but I used a bad color scheme for the previous one, so it didn't have enough definition.

@MikeQ No, that's something else. S8E5 was where Monica had this awful chef and wanted to fire him, but Phoebe thought he was really cute and wanted to date him.

Hmph. If you could glyph of warding the enlarge/reduces then you could do the gate strategy, but I can't think of a consistent way to get the Tarrasque to trigger the glyphs
Unless you scribe them on the surface of a mobile structure
Nevermind, that doesn't work ^

@goodguy5 Now I'm pondering giving a warlock familiar the staff of the magi so he can enlarge/reduce
but...
> to cast one of the following spells from it, using your spell save DC and spellcasting ability
makes it not work, because the best CR 1 spellcasters to turn them into have DCs that aren't very hard to beat (and the Tarrasque has 30 Constitution)
(so it wouldn't be much faster than flying out of reach and peppering with arrows)

that deleted question is confusing

which?

@Xirema I love users that have no Theory of Mind. =/

yea. it doesn't make much sense and the person doesn't seem to understand how we operate here.

The first rule of complaining about people not answering your off-topic question is to blame their motivation.
The mistake is to blame it on them being selfish (doing it for approval) instead of them caring about the quality of the site. I think this is called "transference".

Nah, it's just an age where people assume that being able to instantly make a request means instantly having that request satisfied

Well, I referenced "Theory of Mind" because I do think that more fully encapsulates the way that internet users behave badly. If you have a poorly developed Theory of Mind, then you don't grasp as well the fact that other people around you either understand things you don't, or don't understand things you do. Instead, you assume everyone around you understands the same things you do—and if they still don't agree with you, then the only logical conclusion is that they're being a Dingus†.

I mean, if you take that to a logical conclusion, you'd never bother asking anyone questions about anything

Well of course. Why would I ask someone else a question? Everyone knows exactly what I know. There is nothing to be known beyond what I already know.
And there's no reason to explain anything, because everyone else knows what I know.

@MikeQ What a Dingus Knows - sounds like the name of a song, doesn't it? Riff on the actual song What a Woman Knows

It's like when people get upset when an IT tech tells them to make sure their keyboard/mouse/power cables are plugged in. YOU know that you already checked that stuff, but they can't possibly know that: they're talking to you over a phone and can't see your setup. Conversely, THEY know that stuff like that solves 80% of computer problems, and they can't just assume those checks were accounted for.

There's a question on the mainsite about an awakened bear race.
I assume this involves poking a hibernating bear with a stick and then running.

@BESW Whoever gets eaten last is the winner

lol

8:37 PM
@BESW Have you caught up on season 2 of She-ra yet?

Yup.

Season 2 is so good.
Wish it was longer though.

it's pretty nice
yeah it was also kinda short?

The season finale didn't seem like a finale, so I suspect there are more episodes on the way

it might be a partial season so far yeah

8:48 PM
@MikeQ That and Dragon Prince are shows I really need to watch.

That's the impression I got too, but I couldn't find any support online.
