Now they're talking about the D&D vs. Rick and Morty box set level 1-3 adventure (with a rulebook heavily annotated by the character of Rick). It also comes with a DM screen with art done by Troy Little. They also mentioned volume 2 of the Rick and Morty vs. D&D comic earlier. No date announced for either.
New D&D Essentials kit. Basically a new Starter Set. Releases June 18 only in Target, September 3 everywhere else. 64-page rulebook designed for you to create your own character, with the classic 4 basic rules classes plus the bard. The Sidekicks UA also got worked into it, because the level 1-6 adventure Dragon of Icespire Peak is designed to work with either a regular party OR 1 player and 1 DM.
14 different adventure locations tied to quests you can pick up in Phandalin, so you can run it concurrently with the original Starter Set. Really nice poster map of Phandalin, and the region map on the back. Comes with "flash cards" for conditions, magic items, quests, combat cheat sheets, sidekicks, etc. DM screen with all new art, plus the typical (non-adventure-specific) info on the DM's side. And a set of red (or "cherry lozenge red") dice with 2 d20s and 4 d6s!
Baldur's Gate: Descent to Avernus has a separate Dice & Miscellany product releasing September 17. There's a small map of Avernus and some illustrations of the various kinds of things you might encounter. There are also little cards illustrating the different monsters. And the cipher for the Infernal script. And the dark red (aka "hellfire" or "brimstone" red) dice, of course, including 2 d20s and 4 d6s plus the other dice. The box lid and bottom are velvet so they can serve as dice trays.
(sorry for walls of text :P )
Nathan Stewart accidentally spoiled that the Stranger Things D&D Starter Set adventure will be coming to D&D Beyond.

hey there @nitsua60

@V2Blast I think that was already known. (I remember something about it last week, maybe?)
@Shalvenay Hiya.

@nitsua60 dunno if it was officially announced
though many assumed

Gotcha.
Which is kinda unfortunate, since D&D is such a bad vehicle for stories like Stranger Things.

The Stranger Things D&D set is ostensibly the story of those kids' characters in the D&D game they play. nothing really to do with the story of the show itself. no idea if it's much good.
I've read one good review and one bad one
that said, it coming to DDB is still a good thing :P

Oh, that at least is a better fit.
I'd get behind a play-group that alternated weeks between Tales from the Loop and then D&D games played by their characters in TftL.
As long as those characters don't start playing at Actuaries & Accountants when they meet in a tavern. I've seen Inception--no good comes of going 3 levels deep.

12:41 AM
@nitsua60 I know very little about Tales from the Loop besides me googling it just now
what's it like?

so, uh, does anyone know why Twitter embeds stopped working?

Q: Twitter Oneboxing in chat appears broken

NzallTwitter Oneboxing in chatrooms appears to be broken at the time of posting. Pasting a Twitter link in chat does not change the chat message to a onebox of the tweet in question.

12:53 AM
@V2Blast I've played a few times and enjoyed it. Excellent design of the product: I think it won some awards that year for how well its art (big stuff and little graphics/elements) contribute to the tone the text is going for.
The rule that one alternates between "main-plot" and "personal" scenes helps it get that kid-movie feel. We might be running from killer robots, but we also go to family dinner at the pizza parlor.

@V2Blast Wait...they're bringing out a new D&D adventure where the party descends into hell...and it's for levels 1-3?
> You arrive in Avernus. You are instantly massacred by a single abishai.

1-13
starts in Baldur's Gate

Ah!

Rick and Morty 1-3 adventure is different :P

Nah, I just misread your post.

12:56 AM
as is the 1-6 adventure with the Essentials Kit
haha, fair

(As a side note, abishai was the only Avernus-specific creature I could think of, other than, like, Tiamat and Zariel. Am I forgetting anything?)

not a clue. I know virtually nothing about Hell in D&D

The D&D-setting version of hell I know best doesn't... work like that... so yeah.

@V2Blast It starts with a new player walking up to your table to say "can I join? I have a homebrew awakened bottle-of-coke psion with oodles of backstory. Anyone have some dice I can borrow?"

@nitsua60 make it stooooooooooop
lol

@nitsua60 Cue Asmodeus scribbling notes and saying "Now that's what I call evil!"

Game Session 1 will begin momentarily. In the meantime... creepy growling sounds.
It begins! So excited to watch Crawford DM.

DDB coupon code for 20% off a book: DESCENDNOW

1:46 AM
@V2Blast: Sounds like TCAS

TCAS?

tells pilots to avoid other planes. It can say "CLIMB CLIMB", "DESCEND DESCEND", "CLIMB CLIMB NOW", "DESCEND DESCEND NOW"

ah. traffic collision avoidance system

...I could've sworn that La Vérité sortant du puits armée de son martinet pour châtier l'humanité had a sequel titled something like "She won't go back in," but in French of course.
Can't find it now.
Unless it's Nec Mergitur but that doesn't look at all like what I remember.

2:12 AM
@V2Blast (This is basically a transcription, btw, of an email I got a few hours back. RSVP deadline for tomorrow's epic was a week ago, tonight they're asking if they can join. The epic is all pregens, with a specific storyline being played; they want to bring their I-don't-care-I-didn't-read-that-far.)

@nitsua60 oof. yeah, we had several of those types apply to the previous ToA game I was in

2:38 AM
I got timed out in the Twitch chat and I have no idea why. I didn't even say anything controversial... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For some reason I'm getting error messages even posting to the megathread in the subreddit I mod (/r/dndnext)
apparently the reddit 500 errors are sitewide

What's the product of smelting ore? (I.e. the name for it?) Slag?
Nope, that's the waste.
"Refined metals" I guess?

I suppose

3:04 AM
15 minutes to go until Kate Welch's segment at the D&D live event! She's DMing. Players are Malik Forte, Jerry Holkins, Matthew Lillard, Joe Manganiello, Clint McElroy, and Travis McElroy.

3:18 AM
@nitsua60 usually refined molten metal that's cast into ingots

3:29 AM
@nitsua60 if you're talking specifically about ironworking, then you'll hear the term "pig iron" tossed around for that sort of thing

Makes sense.

am I right in saying the "why would an aboleth have expertise in History?" part of this question should be edited out and asked separately?
3
Q: Does the Aboleth have expertise in History and Perception?

svenemaThe Aboleth statblock states: Int: 18 (+4) Wis: 15 (+2) Skills History +12, Perception +10 Senses passive Perception 20 CR: 10 A CR of 10 translates to a proficiency bonus of 4. This should make the bonuses +8 and +6 for History and Perception. However, the History and P...

it's a totally different question
I also suggested: "You may also want to phrase it as "is there a lore explanation for the aboleth's expertise in History?" in order to avoid people thinking you're asking for designer reasons instead."
also, this one still seems too broad:

Q: What can be done with the Staff of Adornment?

BlamI'm blessed/cursed with a creative player who received the Staff of Adornment (XGE, p. 139). I originally assumed it was a mostly decorative minor magical item but it became their favorite toy. (The sole ability of the Staff of Adornment is that the player can hover three one pound objects just a...

all the edit changed was the phrasing of "which of these can be done" to "what can be done"

Gonna be making an Adept from Golden Sun for my next 5e game. Lol
Thinking of going with a Genassi Sorcerer, mutliclassed into Fighter

I don't think I ever beat Golden Sun
might have played it in an emulator

Every time someone says Golden Sun I keep thinking they are going to say Golden Sky Stories
or at least recently anyway

@Ben wait what
Adam Bradford and Todd Kenreck are live talking about the origins of D&D Beyond here: https://www.twitch.tv/dndlive1
They haven't mentioned it on stream yet (I assume they're waiting until the Dev Update proper in 20 minutes), but the DDB encounter builder alpha is live for subscribers: https://www.dndbeyond.com/encounter-builder

hey there @nitsua60

5:00 PM
News from the dev update:
With the physical box set of the Essentials Kit, you can unlock the the Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure on DDB for free - and there will be a 50% off code for the PHB on D&D Beyond in the box, which you can use yourself or gift to someone else! There will also be a series of QR codes in the box pointing to WotC-written digital adventures on D&D Beyond that will supplement the adventure.

@Shalvenay Hiya.

@nitsua60 how goes the prep work?

D&D Beyond acquired the Avrae Discord bot and they're going to integrate its functionality with their own! It makes more sense to them than making a totally separate Discord bot from scratch. Andrew Zhu, the bot creator, is joining the DDB team.

@Shalvenay It looks like it might get there. Personally, I've got two more large (4' x 6') maps to draw up, then some logistics stuff to deal with. (Snacks, drinks, tables, copies, & the like.) The other organizer seems to be in high gear since last night, so I think we'll be there at game-time.
As to how it goes... who knows?
Oh, and my father-in-law hit the ICU at 2am, so the ewe's out of town trying to help deal with that.
And I'm expected to help woo a major donor at dinner tonight.
Sorry... didn't mean to dump.
Gonna run. I hope that Joshua-guy from the horrible-sounding AL question has a decent session tonight!

5:19 PM
@nitsua60 Darn. Hope all goes well <3

@Shalvenay Pig iron is a particular material, although it's interestingly uninteresting

@kviiri yeah, I know :)

I once went looking for cases where pig iron was used for anything other than as an intermediary product of steel production
The only case I found was where it was used as a ballast or test load. I think it was a space test or something
(Of course, in Dwarf Fortress, my Dwarves made a pig iron hammer with its own image upon it)

@V2Blast It will. I just need to keep in mind that the players will never know that there's a whole human village/kobold warren idea that sits on the cutting-room floor, or that they could have rode in on frikkin' dragons if we'd gotten our stuff together quicker =)

@nitsua60 lol

5:35 PM
I'm not sure anything will beat the end of one of last year's epics, though: 20 L3 PCs trying to take out an ancient green dragon. We've got minutes left until the library closes, and almost everyone's dead.
Someone fires off a wand of wonder, pulls out one of those lacrosse-ball-sized d100s, and rolls...
[which takes forever to come to a stop, of course...]
a 100.
"I don't even know what it is, but it's got to be awesome, right!?"
[everyone scrambles for their DMGs]

wow :D

"It's petrified!"
And the whole place broke into applause.

understandably so

It's the only time I've even seen one of those things used in a session.

Lovely!

6:16 PM
I summarized some of the DDB dev update info in more detail on the /r/dndnext megathread: reddit.com/r/dndnext/comments/bq5bk6/…

7:00 PM
@kviiri my brother used to regale me with stories of his Dwarfs making items that had Thier own image on them, apparently that was just a thing that happened a lot, along with the fort being destroyed by animals (especially Carp)

7:50 PM
@nitsua60 I still want to see a dragon do a dirty double Immelman flowed into a Herbst maneuver ;)

8:09 PM
that martial archetypes question looks painful

9:13 PM
@Xirema just a heads up about your in-progress ontology answer:
It might help to note that there are unequivocal uses of the word "expertise" in the rules that have nothing to do with skills at all. Eg on PHB 36 about gnomes "However, their humor and enthusiasm are dampened by their oppressive environment, and their inventive expertise is directed mostly toward stonework." and the Thief class ability "Infiltration Expertise" and in the background options "Choose one to three routines or roll on the table below to define your expertise as an entertainer." among others. — Rubiksmoose 49 secs ago
I don't know if that helps you at all but it seems to disagree with this statement at least
> Conversely, there are no uses of 'expertise' in 5th Edition sourcebooks where it is not used to mean this concept.
