Q: What happened to Silver age Superman?

Emsley WyattSo back in the late eighties DC decided to reboot Superman by making him less powerful and making changes to his back story. Specifically, that he never had been Superboy, didn't meet Lex Luthor until both were adults, etc. The character of the silver-age Superboy was revealed to have been a cr...

Q: It’s time to retire the term “rep-whore”

JaydlesGoing forward, “rep-whore” (and its derivatives) will be treated like any other term that’s inconsistent with the community’s “be nice” policy: it will be removed. It’s totally okay if you’ve used it in the past. Nobody’s judging the many users who’ve used it. And users will NOT start being s...

What’s a better term, then?
Just a random thought
@Alex thought it seemed like just trying to get rep while not being very helpful
Like many of my edits, now that I think about it...

1:27 AM
You know, what makes this term so irritating to me isn't that it's gendered, or that it's a needless insulting term for a minor problem, although both those things are true.
It's that it's predicated on the inaccurate and silly idea that equates (especially women) wanting to have sex with prostitution. Or, perhaps, the closely related idea that sex workers are really just people who want to have a lot of sex. Because, it doesn't refer to someone who takes money to give reputation, it refers to someone who wants a lot of reputation.
And also that it uses prostitution as an insult...we don't view it as acceptable to use "gay" or "girl" as an insult (I hope), and it's the same principle.

Yep.

How's that POB? @TheLethalCarrot scifi.stackexchange.com/q/208716/98028 I mean, it sounds like a "we don't know" one rather?
@DavidW as well, since you're around now :)

6:05 PM
@Jenayah Judging by the comments (and upvotes) about the mirror being destroyed, it would seem that at least five people think that we actually do know the answer.

Oh. Right.
Well, in any case that's still not POB.
Either the thing is destroyed and that's an answer, or we suppose it magically isn't and we don't know what Harry would see in it and that's still an answer.
Until JKR drinks too much wine, tweets that Harry sees whatever weird thing she'll be thinking of at the moment, and that'sstill an answer.

23 hours ago, by Mithrandir
@Randal'Thor More and more I'm getting the feeling that people are using close votes as super downvotes, and it's really annoying.

@Jenayah Well, My thinking was that it really depends on the reader's opinion of what Harry's "hearts desire" is, and that could be radically different for someone who reads "drarry" fanfics than some other random person.

@DavidW for the record, let's keep things international; American != U.S. :) scifi.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/144892

@Jenayah The mirror being destroyed would be a valid answer, but I have a feeling that it's really avoiding the underlying question which is what is Harry's "deepest, most desperate desire". In any case, the question could also be answered by figuring out what that desire would be, without any direct references to the mirror itself.

6:12 PM
@Jenayah /facepalm Given that I've made that complaint, you'd think I'd be able to hold to at least a modicum of consistency... :-P

@DavidW eeeh, true, it could lead to some of these answers. But the "actual" answer would be that we don't know, due to the thing being destroyed, so that's a valid answer

@DavidW Either there's a canon answer, or there isn't, which is an answer itself.

@DavidW nah, no worries. You can't be a SFF member and expect to keep your consistency forever! :D

@Jenayah Thanks for fixing it.

You're welcome
:)

6:16 PM
@Jenayah I may have been overthinking it. I read "if he sees into the mirror now" as "if he were to see into the mirror now," presuming a hypothetical situation. And the rest follows from that...
It would be highly unusual for me to overthink something, of course. I never do that.

ugh it's one of those "it works in universe but is asking about some real world physics stuff hence it's kinda off topic" brain-knotters
calling @TheLethalCarrot, I know he has a phrasing which is way better than mine but I can't find it again

@Jenayah Yeah, that's how I'd understand the close comment.

yeah, that close reason is a twisted one

@Jenayah Au contraire. It's not asking how physics works. It's asking how the magic works given that it's impossible according to actual physics. Indeed, neither answer to the question makes any reference to actual science, only to facts from the fictional story.

The answer to "how do objects travel nearly the speed of light in a magical universe" is "by magic." By trying to pull in the real-world physics of near-lightspeed travel in an atmosphere, and asking "but what about this?" it's like they're trying to say "except for magic, how does this work?"

8:18 PM
@DavidW I don't think it's asking how they travel at lightspeed. I think it's asking why it doesn't destroy everything if it's traveling at lightspeed.

@Alex But the question is specifically referencing real-world physics, which muddles things.

@DavidW did you mean "which muggles things"? :-)

@DavidW And the close reason (and associated Metas) clearly allow for referencing real science.

@Alex My comment was already too long; I did mean to say "how do objects travel nearly the speed of light without catastrophic side-effects in a magical universe."

Sometimes I really enjoy what JKR has given us with HP. I'm part of the generation that grew up with it, stuff's always been around, etc. Truly, it's actually a good story and a nice world.

8:20 PM
The answer is still "by magic." :)

@DavidW That's why it would be on-topic. It seeks the magical explanation, not a scientific one.

@Jenayah <groan/>

And then these questions arise and we spend hours wrecking our brains in here tryin to stand on however our policies can fit with JKR's handwaving and I hate her.

@DavidW In any case, that's not necessarily the answer anyway, because as shown in Belatrix's answer, the question is based on an incorrect premise.

@DavidW I've done my good deed for the day.
Is it possible to do something suspension-worthy without logging in?

@Alex Asking for a "friend" I presume?

8:40 PM
@Alex I think so. Be a complete dick on a couple stacks, get yourself a network-wide suspension, and you won't have needed to log in whatever.se :)

@DavidW I'm trying to understand how a user whose suspension was supposed to end right around now is now suspended until September, without having been seen since March.

@Alex oh, that.

@Jenayah The suspension is specifically on this site.

@Alex Caught playing with sock puppets?

Just keep doing what got you suspended in the first place.
And don't be too subtle about it, either.

8:41 PM
@Jenayah But if you're suspended you shouldn't be able to do it.
Specifically, you would be unable to vote so you couldn't get resuspended for voting irregularities.

No, but if the sockpuppet got caught (which it deffo was), and mod tools linked the sock to the main account, then you could get your main a new suspension.

I guess that's a possibility. I wouldn't know if that actually happened.

Oh, I'm not saying it happened.

Also:
> This should probably go without saying, but if the problem behaviors do continue beyond the timed suspension, your account is very likely to be permanently deleted.
Jeff Atwood on April 06, 2009

Are you familiar with the Penalty Box?

The penalty box (sometimes called the sin bin, bad box, or bin) is the area in ice hockey, rugby football and some other sports where a player sits to serve the time of a given penalty, for an offense not severe enough to merit outright expulsion from the contest. Teams are generally not allowed to replace players who have been sent to the penalty box.

It’s not something we looked forward to, but as of tonight, we’re instituting a penalty box on Stack Overflow. …

The account only got an additional five months.

@Alex Never underestimate the ability of problem users to find new ways to create problems, even while suspended.
I'll leave it at that.

8:47 PM
I'm just saying a pattern got spotted the first time, and the same pattern arises a second time, and the first iffy account gets an extra time right after that and chat messages are deleted and so is the account, well, that's a good bunch of coincidences, ain't it?

@Jenayah But the account's not deleted.

@Alex Account deletion is very very very rare.

I meant the sock.

@Jenayah Ah.
@Null Without divulging any secrets, if a suspended user did something else would it receive a new suspension reason or just an extension of the original reason?

They're collecting the suspension reasons. It's like Pokémon, gotta catch 'em all.

8:54 PM
@Alex I'm not sure. I don't pay much attention to the publicly displayed suspension reason.
It doesn't really matter.

Eenie meenie moe...

Wait was that user who was quite active here suspended before the first suspension thing ended??

yeah

@Alex You're technically required to issue a new suspension if you want to change the duration.

So it was sockpuppets?

8:58 PM
@NapoleonWilson ooooh...
Wait, it's stupid.

And then more sockpuppetinh while suspended, or was it decided it wasn’t enough time?

If you had to cool down first, and then came back to do more shit, then you still need to cool down.

It's...not a particularly frequent use-case to optimize the UI for, though.

Mh. I suppose you could switch between cooling down and rule violations.

@Jenayah Well, you can still use the same reason. You just have to issue a new distinct suspension.

8:59 PM
That's dumb.

Suspension reasons aren't one-time-use. ;-)

I mean, especially in the case of sockpuppetting.

@Jenayah Why?

9:00 PM
@Jenayah but I’m pretty sure that user’s suspension shouldn’t have ended yet
Can you gain rep while suspended?

@Stormblessed no, they got a new one.

@Jenayah So then suspend again? I don't see any technical problems there.

A new suspension

Feb 16 at 16:54, by Stormblessed
Do suspended users get the rep. back later?

@NapoleonWilson yeah, but you have to change the reason for something else than ooling down, right? Wasn't it what you were saying?

9:02 PM
But was it for something they did while suspended?

@Stormblessed yes, but it's not displayed

@Jenayah Why? As I said, suspension reasons aren't one-time-use. That would indeed be stupid, that's why it makes no sense fo it to be the case. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson ah, okay. I had it backwards.

@Stormblessed march 24 you say? :-)

It’s nice that vote reversals recalculate so the rep. cap doesn’t stop you from gaining rep
@Jenayah huh?
I’m confused

9:13 PM
@Stormblessed Well, it's not like you had that much of activity on March 24. How weird was it that you got randomly picked to be a target of serial upvoting... Just the same day I did, when I didn't have anything more than edits either... ;)
Okay, screw the cryptic.
March 24, sock gets created, ask a relatively on-topic post, gets enough rep to upvote, goes on to upvoting just the people the main accunt was acquainted with, shitposts in chat, gets spotted, sock is deleted, voting is corrected.
Point being, the "random user upvoting all your posts" wasn't that much random.

Oh...I'm intrigued!

@NapoleonWilson you can see deleted messages, right?
Can you search for them as well?

@Stormblessed the whole chat room is indexed by Google.
@NapoleonWilson hey, I said I didn't watch it.

@Jenayah I know. My point is that I don't remember anything bad, so unless my memory is failing, it must have been at a specific time when I was not following the discussion.

@DavidW metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/169686 ("dietary supplement", spammy, etc)

@Jenayah Aha. Makes sense. I guess I'm desensitized. :)

@DavidW spend some time on main Meta any day...

How to open transcript?

9:49 PM
just click on any permalink to one of the messages here

Any way to jump to a day? Seems like it'll take forever

@Stormblessed Click on the day shown in the right side of the screen.

@Alex But back more than one at a time?

@Stormblessed Then you can edit the URL to any other day.

9:50 PM
@Alex Oh

You just have to change the last digits.

@Stormblessed a relatively easy trick is to go through starred messages. Works as well as URL editing ,but funnier :)

So if you're on today's transcript you would just change the 4/8 to 3/24

Q: Theory regarding Thanos and Ant-Man

Ant-ManAfter long discussion on Thanos and Ant-Man, specifically Ant-Man entering Thanos's various orifices to end his life in a most humiliating and painful way, several esteemed scholars on various halls of discussion devoted to the Marvel Cinematic Universe propounded an entirely new theory. What i...

Close reason seems off

9:53 PM
@Stormblessed "off topic" is the only one that lets you write a custom close reason.

@Jenayah But the reason is generic

I know, I know, it isn't perfect. Hence why I wrote and left the comment
Oof, my screen filter makes the screenshot funny. i.stack.imgur.com/aptzk.png

@Jenayah Isn't the comment automatically generated?

@Alex yes, but I still have the posssibility to delete it. I think.

So does the Google cache clear after a while?

9:55 PM
The question is why doesn't the close reason actually show the custom reason used?

@Stormblessed no idea on how that stuff works.
@Alex in case not eryone chose the same one, I guess. Though it's not the case here.
I don't know. Go rant on main Meta or something :P

@Jenayah Why should that be different from any other case of multiple reasons?

Asking a Webapps question about the Google Cache now

ahah

@Alex Prolly 'cause it's not storing the text, it's just storing reason indexes. And custom responses don't have a table entry to index.

9:58 PM
@DavidW oh, makes sense.

Note that this Meta post claims that it does display the custom reason:

A: Misleading Off-Topic-Default-Text

alexwlchanWe can already do custom text when voting to close a question as off-topic. In the vote to close screen, under off-topic, there’s an option of other (add a comment explaining what is wrong), and you can fill in custom text there. Here’s a screenshot: When the next person votes to close, they’...

@Alex when closing, yes. When closed, no.

A test! A test!!

@Jenayah are you sure the transcript is always cached?

@Jenayah If a majority of close votes use that as their close reason, then that’s what gets displayed on the question.

9:59 PM
@Stormblessed no.
@Alex ?
funny.

Now I'm planning to wait until I'm a mod

@Jenayah That's the claim that it shows the custom reason even after the question gets closed.

@DavidW whatcha waiting for, ask a closeworthy question, but not a dupe, not too broad, not unclear, not list, not recommendation, not blatantly off-topic...

@Alex, you post some crazy HP question; we'll all VTC and use a custom reason and see what happens...
We promise not to downvote you first. Really. Promise.

@DavidW I'd prefer a couple dozen downvotes over closing the question.

10:02 PM
@DavidW no, because then we'll have to actually write a cloe reason, and then we'll have to think about what Alex is asking, and the we'll realize there's already a close reason for that, it's called "unclear what you're asking".
2

@Jenayah That's slicing it pretty fine; I'm not sure I could craft a question that finely tuned...

@Jenayah I object.

@Alex I class.
@DavidW take example on the Thanos above, then.

@Jenayah What does that mean?

@Alex it's just a programming related pun. You have this notion of objects, which are instances of classes. Classes are basically a bunch of attributes (what you are) and methods (what you do).
So you saying "I object" I'll just answer "I class".

10:05 PM
@Jenayah I should have realized that an explanation would leave me more confused.

Now you know how it feels when you explain your questions... :D

@Alex Or you could try to one-up her with "I interface."

@Jenayah I object to that as well..

@DavidW it's probably too abstract for them at this point.

@Jenayah And public and static to boot.

10:08 PM
@DavidW UWIN.
Anyway, this may be too much of a private joke? :P

@Jenayah We should consign it to the void. :)

Yeah, let's get back to the main conversation.

Which was?

lol.
@Alex Not this.

:D

10:13 PM
Displaying custom close reasons?

something like that, yeah.

@Alex Please excuse us, we got onto an extended episode of bad programming puns.

Do the mods have a secret chat room here?

There are plenty of examples of questions displaying only the generic reason.

@Stormblessed not so secret

10:15 PM
@Alex Where you know a custom reason was entered?

@DavidW I felt like they were super. Okay, I'm out :P

@DavidW Yes.

@Jenayah Nobody took exception to them, so maybe you're right.
And I'm out too... :)

@Jenayah where is it? There’re like 100 rooms on SF

@Stormblessed tis hidden I guess. It's just not secret as people know it exists, IIRC
also, there's the Teacher's Lounge

10:18 PM
@Stormblessed It's not visible to you.

@Alex Though actually not as many as I thought. The statistics under "tools" are a bit misleading.

Q: Why didn't the Commission order Hazel and Cha-Cha to protect Vanya at the very beginning?

evilMinionAt the beginning of the Umbrella Academy, time-traveling assassins Hazel and Cha-Cha were given orders to eliminate Five, in order to ensure that the Apocalypse would happen. But the actual cause of the Apocalypse is and the Commission knew that. Still, they gave a misleading order that migh...

Oh
Thaddeus was online 20 hours ago
So no impending mod elections?
Interesting
He has way more votes cast than I do but a lot less flags or edits

Q: Pre-90s book: man disconnecting from a "plugged in" moon colony

ClareI read this book in the late 90s. It was borrowed from the local library and was quite old then. It was about a man who had lived in a lunar colony which had pioneered a way of life that allowed the people to be connected. They had ports surgically implanted and could share info and talk to ea...

I guess flags make sense for a mod to be low

He was too scared by your call to arms and rise to power :P

11:01 PM
@Jenayah my threat of “when I’m a mod” was very effective

:P
