@Rubio
what's up?

Hey - quick comment for you (and for @Hugh if they ever pop in here) - not sure if you're aware but, if you edit a really bad post you can actually knock it out of the review queue so it doesn't end up being closed or deleted or whatever when it otherwise would (/should) have
so like puzzling.stackexchange.com/a/80204/30633 - this probably should have been deleted as very low quality but after your edit it got bumped out of the review queue
so (general note for everyone) - a really bad post shouldn't be edited for superficial things (like adding spoiler tags or fixing formatting) if that edit is not going to actually make the post worth keeping.

Q: Tokyo Metro puzzle special: Oops, the lines are coming down

Tzu LiHere is my first Special Edition puzzle, and it is a little harder. The map is here. So you, being a Tokyo straphanger, was in between Hikawadai (Y05 F05) and Kotake-mukaihara (Y06 F06) on the Fukutoshin line when it shut down and all passengers were ordered to disembark. That resulted in a rath...

Just a question to @Rubio 's message above - at what point is a question/answer "unsalvageable", really? What factors best indicate that a question/answer should be deleted?

when YOU can't fix it, because (say) it's an answer but it's missing something only the poster can supply

Ah okay, that seems reasonable.

basically: edit to make a post better, but don't bother if your edit won't raise it to a minimal quality because even with the edit it's still not going to be worth keeping - the poster at that point needs to fix it, or else we close/delete it to keep low quality stuff off the site

Q: Use only 1 2 6 7 to write expressions that equal 31 32 33 34

KristenHere is the problem: Make expressions that equal 31, 32, 33, and 34 using the numbers 1, 2, 6, and 7. In each expression, each number must be used exactly once. You can use parentheses and the symbols for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. I have found several ways to do this for...

@Sphinx I've been giving quite a bit of flags and downvotes recently, and I feel little cold-hearted about it... shoudl I though?
Also, I'm noticing a lot new users posting math questions about "make [arbitrary number] by using [arbitrary number] and using only [arbitary mathematical symbols]

Q: Overuse of poor math questions, what can we do?

NorthSo I've been noticing ... lazy math puzzles. I thought it was just a fad, but clearly not .Now, I'm not trying to judge, but a lot of these questions are just in this weird gray zone where they're not very great puzzles, but aren't exactly banned in PSE. I'm not proposing that mathematics tags ...

Q: What is the most valuable earthly possession for a human?

LightenedThe one thing without which humans just cant go on as humans. The one thing which unfortunately gets corrupted over the years and makes man a corrupted copy of what he originally was. The fruit of which is seen all around the world. Tragically although man has an inkling of what might be wron...

@North We get waves of puzzles all the time. They usually burn out after a couple of months at most, when fatigue sets in - I know I've often upvoted the first, actual novel uses of a new puzzle style/format, but after a while started downvoting them after the dozenth puzzle that looked like a no-thought retread of the same tired idea. Your downvote is yours to cast as you see fit, including "this is not what I want to see here" — or, even, "this is not something I want to see any more of".
@North Flags are generally less subjective. If you're flagging something as off-topic or as very low quality, it really should be, irrespective of whatever else is going on. But by the same token, if something is off-topic or very low quality, the whole point of the site community having the ability to use flags, close votes, and delete votes is to give all of us a role in keeping the site to our standards. If a wave of low quality noise washes in, don't feel cold hearted about addressing it.
Having said that, don't be off-putting about it; it's entirely possible to tell someone there's something wrong with their post(s) in a way that helps them understand what they're doing wrong, how they can fix it, and why we care.

Q: Real life puzzle: Unknown alphabet or shorthand

cyco130User JellicleCat posted this on linguistics stackexhange a few years ago. None of us were able to come up with a satisfying answer but most seemed to agree that it was an idiosyncratic cipher or shorthand. It means that puzzlers may be better equipped to solve it than linguists. Anyway, the ori...

Q: Chess Massacre Variants-Play Find The Fastest Way?

Rewan DemontayI have thought up several variations of massacre chess. Massacre chess is a game where almost every single move is a capture.
