Q: Nanobot apocalypse on Earth, originally used for weather control

AttilaA few years ago I've read an excellent sf book about nanobots that went out of control. In the book they were used for weather control, when they went amok the scientists threw in yet another bunch of nanites and so on, until Earth became uninhabitable, teeming with nanites, I remember the weathe...

Q: Trying to ID a sci-fi “year’s best” type of collection based on hazy memories of two short stories

MattAs the title indicates, I’m trying to identify a science fiction short story “year’s best” type of collection from either the 1980s or early to mid-1990s based on my rather hazy recollections of two of the stories. The first story takes place on a flat earth, where a group of teenagers climb over...

Q: Story with quote about oral sex and eyelashes, possibly Heinlein

Jordan RunningI hope this question is on-topic and not too risqué. Maybe fifteen years ago I read a story in which a character says, of the act of performing oral sex on a woman, that if your eyelashes don’t get wet, you’re doing it wrong—or words to that effect. In the intervening years I’ve paraphrased the...

Wow, my thoughts have pinging powers.

Let's just say I saw your profile page.
With some new information.
And I hatched a devious plan.
And was debating whether to implement it.
And then you showed up here.
Hence my thoughts of pinging you apparently pinged you.

SQB
@Marvin I see two close votes. OP's insistence that it's sf should be good enough, though.

@SQB full disclosure: one is mine and that doesn't seem on-topic
@Alex or the fact that I'm basically around at these hours
What was the plan?

SQB
@Jenayah I think we established pretty recently that OP insistence that it is sf should be taken on their word.

8:03 AM
@Jenayah Your profile said that you’re always pingable. But you hadn’t been seen in four hours. So I was going to ping you to try to prove that you’re not always pingable. And then you shiowed up. (I realize that you might have meant simply that the ping would occur rather than that you are always around to respond.)

Speak of Cao Cao and Cao Cao arrives.

@SQB I think the word was "we can err to leave it open"
@Alex ah! Well yeah I'll always respond to pings, maybe not in seconds but still ;)
And in any case well, I am not away that often ahah

SQB
@Jenayah Should be on topic. Locating a difficult to find work is on topic, as you well know.

@SQB not a really relevant example, this one was fully on-topic.

SQB
Well, I don't see a reason why finding the radio play version of an on-topic work would be off topic.

8:13 AM
Oh crap, I thought you were replying to the Heinlein one. My bad. #blamemobile
I meant, does it fall under shopping stuff or is that niche enough not to?
My gut says it's alright but I wanted to check

SQB
I think it's roughly on the same level as your question about the bent bullet.
Shopping questions are more like "what should I get" or "where can I find this the cheapest".
Also, if the question can be answered with "on Amazon", it's generally off-topic (exceptions for when the OP had searched on Amazon, but not found it for whatever reason, I think).

Alright

Q: "Shipshape Home" as a radio program?

Richard SamuelsonI just noticed the question about the '50s story which ends with the discovery that "the whole block's a rocket ship!" The story is Richard Matheson's "Shipshape Home." If somebody's going to try and find it, it might help them to know what year were you "about 13"?? That would help to narrow down the search. You see, we don't know if you are 20 or 90 years old. — user14111 4 mins ago

@Marvin that's what I was talking about here.

10:26 AM
Seeing how the Mistborn series was decidedly low-key on sexuality, I'll probably refrain from asking if burning tin enhances the sexual experience, even if that would be more engaging than the ton of other rule-lawyering Allomancy questions people tend to come up with.
Though, given than Vin and Elend could both burn tin and pewter, they probably could have had the time of their lives if only they weren't busy with other stuff. ;-)
...combined with careful timing on the duralumin.

@NapoleonWilson that's an easy answer, Tin enhances any senses, even potentially Biochromatic life sense or other magical senses
But not always pleasantly, particularly with duralumin or savantism.

Scp foundation tag should be removed from scifi se
The beauty of the foundation is that there is no canon making every question related to it primarily opinion based

2:46 PM
Weird, I went back a page to edit this and it made a new answer

Hmm was gonna ask why you'd delete and re-post it

@TheLethalCarrot Emphasis

@NeoDarwin if it's a Q on one SCP it's not POB then?
In any case I don't think those should be removed... Canon or no canon that's on-topic for sure

@Jenayah POB?

2:50 PM
primarily opinion based

^

With no common continuity it's impossible to ask a non POB question from there

@NeoDarwin I guess so

well none are closed so far

Dr. Clef could be a researcher in 231 and head of scp training and deployment in another

2:51 PM
I read the mirror one, thought it was cool but WAY too short a story

but go ahead and flag ;)

Let me check what questions were asked

If each episode has a common canon then it's fine
Also a question can be asked about 1 specific action at 1 specific moment rather than how it relates to the wider "canon"
Just because "there is no canon" doesn't mean everything is then POB

The question on Scranton Reality Anchors for instance is POB

@TheLethalCarrot wouldn't that rather be a char-id?

2:55 PM

@Jenayah Character? Why?

@TheLethalCarrot should be on SCP identification?

It's asking to identify a work in a "series" so yeah

@TheLethalCarrot Each SCP is about a specific object

There are only 4500 or something scps

2:56 PM
But I think episode is better

Well it's asking to identify the work not the object right?
Although I suppose they might be the same thing

I think scp foundation has the best explanation for "magic" in science fiction

I dunno enough about it tbh

I have been contributing there since 2013

In that case I'd say @NeoDarwin gets the final word on char-id or ep-id
or both

3:04 PM
I mean it's hard not to find a SCP lol but if any come up I can easily answer it

yeah but so should that be tagged character-id or episode-id?

Episode id would be better

@NeoDarwin agreed
I’ve seen ones with major spoilers in just the previews shown on other pages

FWIW the "spoiler protection" is the title and the tags and spoiler markdown

@TheLethalCarrot but previews also can have major major major spoilers

Well that's where spoiler markdown should be used... once you've seen it can always edit
There is a fine balance though between hiding all information and hiding only the most spoilersome of stuff

Se have spoken recently about meta "not working"
Whereas I say meta does work they just need to actually action some of the stuff instead of constantly ignoring it all

@TheLethalCarrot Who should do this?
Mods should have a little more power

Mods can't make changes though
That's up to employees so employees should monitor meta and FRs

Like having the power to send Meta things directly to the people who run the company

Is, as Jenayah notes, too broad. As I've said before, you can flag a mod and ask them to change the reason.

@RDFozz A post containing two questions does not make it unclear.
At best it would make it too broad.

I wouldn't bother, in most cases.

And it can be easily fixed by just editing out the second question.

6:46 PM

maybe
Yeah but then you should've done that before VTROing :P

@Jenayah No, the people who voted to close should have selected the correct reason.

With a number of answers in place, editing out the second question is probably inappropriate in this case.
