Use this if you want to retag stuff over time to add
Also, should be a synonym

@Alex there's more detail about how that takes place in a futuristic setting so aye

@Mithrandir can you make a synonym of ?
Or is that beyond your power?

@Stormblessed [story-identification] short film is:q -[short-film] -[novel] -[books] is a better query (trims it down to 87 potential results)
@Stormblessed Mith isn't a mod on SFF :) and in any case it can't be done as the tag doesn't exist

@Jenayah thanks

Synonymization's goal isn't to prevent but to cure; basically if for years people have been using two tags with the same meaning (for instance and ), then it can be a good thing to synonymize the two
(big outlines, though)
@Stormblessed you're welcome
@Alex eh, you're ten rep away from the privilege I use the most and always forget I don't have yet on Main Meta :)
@Stormblessed in these kinds of edits you can nuke the "I don't remember much else, does anyone knwo about it?" lines which are not very relevant :)

12:23 AM
@Jenayah I’m careful about changing that sort of stuff because it might get rejected (author’s intentions, etc.)

@Stormblessed if you're unsure about it you can say in the edit reason that the lines aren't helpful in your opinion; that might make reviewers realize it's indeed useless
Personally I certainly don't mind seeing them gone. We know that story-id questioners don't remember the title - they wouldn't be here otherwise :)

Q: Why would Dumbledore never reveal his past to Harry?

user50780What i'm wondering is why did Dumbledore, in all of his chats between Harry Potter, never talked about his past? Was Dumbledore afraid of something in his past? @Stormblessed A while back when I was starting to actually clean up stuff I asked if I was doing that right with a quick recap of what I was checking each time I cleaned a post. Oh, it gone

?
No this is not a bounty case

Why not?

you could literally set up a bounty each and every day on this to check if there are new ones
well the system maybe wouldn't let you but you get the idea

5:20 PM
But does that make it not a bounty case?
Which close reason would it fall under?

No, that makes it too broad IMO

But at any given time there is only one possible correct answer, so why should that be too broad?
(Despite the fact that there are currently 15 answers.)

but it's been around a while etc etc and my close-vote comment would be buried so I'm asking here first for some feedback
@Alex because the everchanging nature of said answer makes it too much of a fluctuation for it not to be too broad

These are the descriptions of Too Broad: Your questions should be reasonably scoped. If you can imagine an entire book that answers your question, you’re asking too much. And: Please edit the question to limit it to a specific problem with enough detail to identify an adequate answer. Avoid asking multiple distinct questions at once. See the How to Ask page for help clarifying this question.

how do you narrow it down?

5:25 PM
It seems like it fits all those criteria.
In any case, you could make a simple edit like "at the time of this writing".

Here's a fiction I just wrote: "Anna was drinking a coffee. She checked the date; it was Feb 26th, the year 87^102356. Then she went back to her warp managing work. The end."
There ^ probably the most further away future
@Alex doesn't really make it less broad...

@Jenayah It solves your problem of the ever-changing answer.

AlexWhen voting to close a question there are five options you can choose from: The ones that interest me here are the third and fifth choices. @Alex SE's goal is to have solutions that last...

@Jenayah Did I say something differently there?

admittedly I haven't read it in some time but my point was that this close reason isn't really precise in describing the problem with that question

5:30 PM
@Jenayah It does last. The answer to that question will be correct for all eternity. It just wouldn't answer a different question, namely, "what's the latest fictional year in books written after this date?"
@Jenayah Ha, the point of that Meta post was actually to complain about using reasons imprecisely.

@Alex well then yeah, the close reason is unprecise there

(By the way, I don't necessarily disagree with you. But someone has to argue the other side.)

@Alex even "at the time of writing", it's broad...

@Jenayah Only in the sense that it's hard to know the true answer, so people post answers that may be close but are not actually correct. If we theoretically had a computer that could scan all fictional media and pick out the latest date, it would be a simple answer.
So it's more Too Hard than Too Broad.

Too Broad encompasses Too Hard.

5:35 PM
@Jenayah You have the same problem with "first instance of".

" limit it to a specific problem with enough detail to identify an adequate answer"

The detail is not what's lacking. It's the ability to do the research that's lacking.

@Alex except that one won't ever change. We might dig up n earlier one from time to time, but it's rare; so that vouches for it
@Alex well part of SE questions are supposed to have some research already done.

@Jenayah That's why I suggested an edit that would make the answer never change here either.
@Jenayah Sure, if you think the questioner didn't do enough research you can downvote the question.

@Alex that would be a cheat, by comparison to the "earlier answer" thing

5:38 PM
"Cheat" has a negative connotation.

@Alex the combination of broad + has to be tweaked to vaguely fit some "not broad" criteria presses pretty hard on that question
@Alex it was meant to

@Jenayah Well I also argued that even without an edit it's not technically Too Broad because it passes all the criteria. I only suggested the edit as a bonus to solve the problem that the correct answer can constantly change.

To be honest that's kind of an unhelpful handwaving tweak
by doing so you could literally clutter the homepage by asking such questions and ending them with "at the time of writing"

I could also clutter the homepage by asking questions about fanfictions I wrote. But hopefully people will only ask questions within reason.

meh

5:43 PM
You could also use a custom close reason.
@Jenayah Did I satisfy your desire for feedback?

@Alex do these show only as comments, or does the close reason appear on the "this wuestion was flagged for being: off-topic/too broad/etc" close review page?

@Jenayah It appears there as well.

ah, nice
I'll do that then

@Jenayah Eh. If it does, it won’t be the first time.

@Alex You just have to identify a chunk that isn't necessarily explicitly critical to answering the question, and spin that often into a secondary answer.

8:47 PM
@RDFozz Yeah, last time I split it into two answers linked to each other.

New bronze badge: "Copious" - write a 30k word post that doesn't get deleted or trimmed down
@Alex closest thing we have to subsections in these lands...

@Jenayah Funny you should say that; the question I was answering ended up getting closed.
Maybe it should be a privilege to have unlimited character length?

@Alex ouch
@Alex no

@Jenayah Why not?

a couple of things...
Technical part: limits are there for technical reasons too, I guess if you put your mind into posting an answer with two billion words, it could hurt the system
basically put limits to everything, especially whne you give other people the power to send data into your system

8:57 PM
@Jenayah Okay, how about a 50,000 limit?

SE's logic part: SE isn't Wikipedia, an answer should have limits. If the question can be answered by a 500k word answer then it was probably better to close it as too broad and point the OP to a book. That's kinda what the "Too Broad" close reason says
continuation of the above: People don't come to SE for overlong answers.

But sometimes half the limit can just be taken up by the URLs of links.

Q: How did Apophis maintain System Lord status?

DaishozenApophis is the main antagonist of SG-1 for the first couple seasons. In The Serpent's Lair SG-1 destroys 2 Ha'tak vessels right before they attack earth. This is shown as breaking Apophis' hold on much of his territory, and even the people on what seem to be his capital world (Chulak) start to re...

@Alex I can't answer that for sure as I don't know exactly how SE is built etc. Actually, scratach that - even if I did know, it's probably something pretty hard to calculate, so the actual number I wouldn't know. My guess is that 30k is what the people who conceived the stuff took out to be a reasonable (though long) answer, that wouldn't harm their stuff
On the technical part I honestly think 50k words shouldn't be able to break SE...

@Jenayah I know you can download a chunk of the SO DB for SQL Server, so I think they run on that.

Q: Please increase the maximum allowed length for answers

Q: Privilege for question/answer character limit?

Dmitry GrigoryevDoes it make sense to lower the character limit on questions/answers for new users and increase it after a reputation threshold of, say, 2K? Q: Why are there maximum character limits in comments and posts?

Joe HopfgartnerI regularly hit the character limit when writing a comment. I understand the desire to keep everything compact and nicely readable. But sometimes you just need more space! Okay, fair point. Code can actually take up a very good part of a SO answer.

@Jenayah Some sites have it larger.

ah?
which ones?

More seriously, the limit has been raised to 65536 from 30000. — Chris Jester-Young Aug 15 '15 at 18:20

Q: In the 2014 move The Frame, what does the violin symbolise?

Don TenJamin Winans' 2014 movie 'The Frame' is a film loaded with symbolism and metaphor but the thing I keep coming back to is the violin. But I could be wildly incorrect and would like to hear other opinions.

I guess I could always follow this guy's suggestion:

A: Please increase the maximum allowed length for answers

tvanfossonGet a blog and post a link if the space is too short for an answer.

(And possibly get deleted as link-only.)

or even spam if you don't say it's yours

Or post it on Code Review and link it.

?
a Literature answer about HP translations on Code Review would probably get deleted

9:21 PM
@Jenayah Eh, that's not the one in danger of exceeding the limit.

Is it a Mi Yodeya one?

Yep.
And it's a timeline issue.

It still wouldn't be very on-topic on Code Review :^)
@Alex of course it is

Problem is that there are about ten different ways of reconciling the timeline.

9:52 PM
@Alex You'd have to make sure it wasn't a link-only answer, that's all.

@RDFozz Once I start describing the link it will become 30,000 characters again.

Also, on the DBA stack sometimes people post larger files to pastebin.com. May not be appropriate in your case.
@Alex Then, maybe that should be ten different answers? At a first guess, I'd think that would be the solution.

@RDFozz Someone on Mi Yodeya recently used a URL shortener for his answer that had lots of links that made it exceed the character limit.

argh URL shorteners

@Alex I actually thought of that when reading through this earlier - however, my job interfered with my making the suggestion :-)

9:55 PM
@RDFozz I have posted multiple answers to one question several times. But in general it seems that one comprehensive answer is preferred.

@Jenayah I imagine they're great, if you want to hide the fact that you're actually post a link to a Rick Astley song - right, @Mithrandir?

ahah

As Shog9 wrote in one of the posts I linked above: Sure, we could do the usual "one list item per answer" thing. But that has an even worse effective limit, in that you only cram 30 answers on a single page, and junk up each item with irrelevant things like the author's name and icon. Printing these is frustrating at best.

@Alex I suppose it matters whether the possible answers are mutually exclusive or not. If they are, then if they're all listed as one answer, then you have to select the wrong ones along with the right one, which seems against the SE spirit.

@RDFozz It gets a little complicated on Mi Yodeya, because from a certain perspective none of the answers are wrong.

9:59 PM
@Alex Understood, and suspected :-)
