How come this one hasn't made it to our chatroom yet? Smokey reports are supposed to be cross-posted between TREU and Charcoal HQ, aren't they?

2:49 AM
@Rob Mmmmh... That page could probably use an update. Smokey has been posting reports in our main chatroom (The Restaurant at the End of the Universe) since September now.
It also does post them in the cleanup room, mind you.

3:18 AM
yeah, the 21 left probably evaded deletion because no mod/RO saw them

Both of those reasons are experimental, and ya'll don't get those reports.
So that's intended behavior, at least at a technical level.

Oh, alright.
On a "common sense" level though, I can only speak fo rmyself but it feels like we could get those as well.

I'm pretty sure we have gotten some with those reasons.

@Alex You probably have, the check is for all the reasons on a report being in that list.
@Jenayah FP rates go up a bunch if we turned that on for ya'll, see chat.stackexchange.com/… for a sample.

Mh, indeed kill you is tricky on SFF

yeah, SFF is a hard site for those experimental things

that and "muscle" on Fitness.SE I guess? :P

@Jenayah - Some people don't want to see some things, for example Catija mentioned that she wanted some warning when awful things are in a post, there is discussion about having a warning page for them (♦️) so they know that they are going to be blasted by vulgarity.

Also, general policy question: Is tpu feedback the same as saying "I think this post should be flag deleted as spam"?

No
Dec 4 at 17:30, by Undo
tp feedback is not a perfect map to flag-worthiness
Sep 4 at 19:47, by Undo
Corollary is also true - tp feedback doesn't always mean "someone should have cast a red flag on this". It means "we would like to have blocked this at the system level"

5:01 AM
Ok, so then what does tp feedback mean?
@Undo Anything that'd we'd want blocked at a system level should be red-flagged, no?

Vandalism, and some other edge cases.

Ah OK. But tp on a non-edited post does map to flag worthy ness?

Not always.

But if a post is something we'd want system blocked from v1, shouldn't we want it deleted, since in a perfect world the system would've blocked it?
Sorry if I'm being dense

It's too late for me to get into this, but tl;dr is that it's generally true that tp feedback maps to flag-worthiness. I usually shy away from trying to enumerate all the edge cases, because this is a complex system on top of another complex system.
Sep 4 at 19:49, by Undo
@PetterFriberg Ultimately, it's all about making sure our statistics for autoflagging and internal reviews are accurate. Complex subject, and when you try to take the subjectivity out of it you get a complex set of almost-objective stuff.

5:07 AM
Ok. Also, mind looking at a weird MS thing quickly?

Aye

This domain has 2 MS records for one post, 2 hours apart, the second caught for blacklisted user. How does that happen?

@thesecretmaster A few things at play there:
1) metasmoke doesn't reject duplicate posts (but does refuse to flag them a second time)
2) Smokey automatically adds owners of tp posts to blacklist
3) I don't think Smokey attempts to reject duplicate reports (but someone else might know better)

@Undo That's... weird. Why?
Also, why 2 reports hours apart

5:15 AM
@thesecretmaster Probably a byproduct of how API fetching works: If we have to scan any post on a Q/A for any reason, we'll grab the whole question + answers combo and scan them all. Could be another answer got posted or edited.
@thesecretmaster MS attempts to be a record of what happened, no reason for that kind of logic to be implemented there.

@Undo Ah OK. And it hadn't been deleted in those intervening 2 hours. That makes sense.

@Undo Clarification on this: We won't even look at flagging a post if it's a duplicate, so the blacklisted user thing adding weight to get above threshold isn't a concern.

Ok, thanks for explaining. Also, do you see why that post is a tp? Because I'm lost.

Zoe
Does that apply to all the instances?

5:29 PM
I don't believe standby instances listen to chat, at all.

Zoe
Oh. That's slightly inconvenient for the !!/ms-up command though
Especially since the other instances consider it down

We'll have to see if they recover. If not, then their owners will need to reboot them.
@ThomasWard @angussidney @NobodyNada @iBug It appears your instances didn't recover from MS being down for a few minutes. You'll probably need to reboot them. @ThomasWard Lunar is fine, but Solar isn't.
@Zoe Yeah. A brief period of MS being down shouldn't result in the standby instances not recovering.

Zoe
Maybe it could be a good idea to make smokey listen to chat if ms is down, even if it is in standby, but ignoring all commands aside !!/ms-up? Registering MS as down is automatic, but recovering is the problem

That might be beneficial, but recovery from MS being down should be able to be automatic. It should be easy for the standby instances to just retry connecting to MS every X seconds. If it connects, then MS is up.

@SmokeDetector @Undo Wanna check and see what happened here?

@Zoe Alternately, we could have a more general solution, where there is a room to which all SD instances always listen (e.g. Charcoal Test?). We could then have a command that can individually bring one instance out of standby, either full out, or just to listen to all commands in that room. That would provide a more general solution to a larger class of problems.

Yeah, it's certainly possible that Google Translate is missing something, but we'd need a native/fluent speaker of Indonesian to really know. While we have a few things in non-English languages that we detect, it's really only a very few things that we've seen repeatedly.

@Glorfindel FYI: It appears your feedback was recorded twice on this MS post. You might want to clear one of the feedbacks.

@Glorfindel True. Normally it deletes the old feedback, I guess race conditions would explain it. Wouldn't synchronized fix that though?

@Zoe In this instance, I didn't check. However, it's [status-as-designed] that MS only replaces an existing feedback for 24 hours after the feedback is placed on the post. Beyond that, the old feedback is not deleted when a new one is placed on the post by the same user.

@ArtOfCode Adding a work-around for dev because I want that SHA
... to use in dev

Restart: API quota is 13882.

@thesecretmaster does it have to be the current SHA?
cuz if not... do what I do, just throw any random SHA in a REVISION file and leave it there forever

But it costs nothing in performance to grab the current SHA on startup.

aye, but extra unnecessary code is unnecessary when there are perfectly good workarounds :)
