@ArtOfCode all the paid hosting in the world can't help if the single point of failure continues to fail

I thought part of the problem was that only Undo can have access to the DB (because that's the conditions people opted into). Otherwise, we could split the cost across several different AWS accounts?

2:11 PM
part of the problem is we don't know exactly how much money our dedicated volunteers are throwing in, which makes it hard to plan for eventualities

The easier part of that would at this point probably be to re-ask for permission with "Undo and other charcoal admins as deemed necessary"
would probably still find enough people to serve out autoflags

I'm spending about 10e per month on my AWS which is mainly Halflife (but I'm probably the only one who pays much attention to Halflife anyway)
if others are in the same ballpark I don't think we really need donations, somebody else will probably be able to fill the gap if someone drops out

but it's hard to know precisely; I vaguely speculate Undo is footing a bill which is larger (though part of it might be hard to estimate properly if it's a slice of something he has for work anyway)

@tripleee Sure, but load balancing it across multiple servers means it's a dual point of failure
Problem is load balancing is expensive
Looking at $300-400 per year

2:14 PM
if Helios became reality we would depend on DynamoDB which is inherently scalable and resilient, unlike these SQL things we currently sit on
but then we would be pretty much stuck on AWS for better or for worse
(in the current cloud market situation, mostly better I believe)

You don't need any of the fancy auto-scaling etc though so perhaps you could run a tiny EC2 that is the load balancer. There must be some open source softwre for that purpose.

or on the other hand you make it properly cloudy using lambdas or Fargate or what have you, and the infrastructure takes care of scaling it for you

Like static front end (S3) with API calls in the back? Neat!

@Henders You could, but then you need 3 instances to make it not a SPOF... load balancers cost the same anyway

But you'd only need a tiny server to run that LB. Running a t3 nano for a whole year (on demand) costs $46
Load balancer for a year is $224 before you even get to calculating the LCU cost

You'd have to experiment... might turn out that you need more CPU time than a nano will give you

@ArtOfCode Disagree. It needs a competent sysadmin to look at it. We go for weeks and months without an issue; there's just some gremlin in there that's eating something sometimes.

@Undo What is serverless.yml and how do I use it? I can't seem to find any AWS docs that mention it.

@thesecretmaster Ah, it's not an AWS thing. It's a Serverless thing

5:07 PM
@Undo What is serverless?

Framework that (supposedly) manages the irritating parts of serverless stuff, then lets you deploy to whatever cloud provider.

Should I use it?

There's another option these days - look up AWS SAM. Playing with it a bit at work.
I don't really know which one is better.

Also, DDB interaction -- do I need a lib?

Serverless seemed to have momentum behind it for making stuff better, but AWS probably does too

@thesecretmaster boto3 should do it; not sure if anyone's made anything better

@quartata Last I checked lambda's dont do ruby, so python it is.

i mean
you can do anything if you embed it

5:11 PM
@Undo Should I start from scratch, or start with helios and modify it until it works?

huh, wonder if including Ruby in the lambda package is possible
@thesecretmaster Personally, I'd start from scratch.
Helios is probably on an ancient version of Serverless at this point
If you try Serverless, I think it has a way to scaffold a new object. Like rails g scaffold thing

Ok. Last question, how do I do multiple paths?

@thesecretmaster As in routing?

Yeah, is that API Gateway-side or lambda-side?

If you're using Serverless, it handles all that stuff. github.com/Charcoal-SE/helios/blob/master/serverless.yml#L62

Helios shouldn't be on an ancient serverless framework. It should run

@Undo Going afk in a sec, but seems like my outline would be a) have a /register path which serves a page from s3 which does SE oauth with some lambda b) have a /autoflag path which MS posts to with a token and params for flag count and post id and site (and flag option?). Sounds reasonable?

i hope you are aware of these crimes you are committing

5:18 PM
@thesecretmaster I'd keep the user selection logic in MS. So your last part would be "posts to with a token and params for user ID, post ID, site, flag option"

@quartata if someone would like to tell me what errors they're getting, I might be able to fix them :P
