God fucking dammit
Over-the-Rhine homeless camp clears after countywide ban becomes permanent http://bit.ly/2OR1f2e
and go where

@Unionhawk probably to a cemetery, which is where these politicians want homeless people people to begin with

sweeping people under the rug so that people don't have to look at the problem, don't have to think about it, and just
This city admits to a 40k unit housing shortage

I agree with not wanting folks camping out in the park, but the solution is to then set up a place where they can stay. Everyone has a right to a roof over their head.

As we all know, step 1 in addressing people's needs, is to displace them to try and force them into overcrowded shelters

Are American schools currently out for summer break?

12:29 AM
Coming back

Because if so I feel like turning them into temporary shelters would at least give them more time to come up with a better solution

Silly @Wipqozn we don't fund schools either

The whole situation here is dumb too, lots of shelters have restrictions like families only etc

I wonder how much it actually costs fund a shelter

Which on top of them all being at or above capacity is why this community has, until now, elected to just form a camp
And yes I say community as in community

12:32 AM
Because I feel like a 10% cut to the military budget could fund a lot of shelters
@TimStone oh right I forgot about that. School funding is directly tied to taxes and performance, which just makes the problem even worse.

laugh-cries in American

What if we treated schools like a business
:hyperthink:
fuck
This is one of those immediate things that I just have no idea how to work with

“There is not a constituency, certainly among Republican voters, to let serious felons out of prison or slash their prison sentences,” Cotton said in the interview. “It’s ill-advised policy and even more ill-advised timing.” https://www.politico.com/story/2018/08/20/cotton-trump-sentencing-reform-790040
It's true, Tom's favourite approach is to just let them wait long enough that they die

Sometimes I'm shocked you guys won the cold war

It was Pizza Hut, Pizza Hut did it

12:38 AM
@Wipqozn I'm not sure "won" is really the best word. As I understand it it's more that we postured and fought endless proxy wars until the Soviet Union fell apart.

@TimStone LONG LIVE PIZZA HUT
@murgatroid99 yeah it was just meant to be a lame joke

@murgatroid99 outlasted is probably a better word

It's so good. I thought maybe it'd be something iffy but the impossibly fast signature collector pulled through
Kobach will still win though 100%, Kansas is dumb as hell

12:47 AM
across all the counties too
i thought kansas couldn't get more rekt after brownback was booted
i was wrong

Colyer was already a sufficiently evil guy if your association is that kind of thing so picking Kobach instead just means you like getting grifted? To own the libs? I guess?

brownback got so lucky with that federal appointment
he was gonna get trounced if he stayed in

Like I get picking The Republican but when you're picking between two why would you go with the guy who is demonstrably more full of shit?
His votes were gonna trickle down to some other candidates that's for sure

lol shit, I want to make fun of him hopping on Twitter for this but like Trump is President
@Memor-X Okay, but! And bear with me. What if the next election was just now?
BREAKING I’m now told Turnbull is weighing up calling an election rather than risk another challenge. The reaction from one backbencher “F@$k me dead. We’ll get annihilated” @SkyNewsAust
Speaking of Trump and Twitter… 🤷🏼‍♂️
Just watched former Intelligence Official Phillip Mudd become totally unglued and weird while debating wonderful @PARISDENNARD over Brennan’s Security Clearance. Dennard destroyed him but Mudd is in no mental condition to have such a Clearance. Should be REVOKED? @seanhannity
Havin' a real one tonight

@TimStone pfft in the past decade which is when all the kifing has been happening we have never had a feudal election after a in-term election spill

Ah yes but now things are extra dumb taps head

2:37 AM
@TimStone hell yeah

@TimStone hell yeah
uhhhh @Memor-X i see a bunch of words but what do they actually mean in context. is there an explainer?

2:56 AM
lol Jake Tapper out here giving the full backstory on the statue like anyone gives a crap about the trash on the ground except throwing it away

Oh let me guess, daughters of confederacy put it up in like, 1907 or some shit
Or maybe 1960s
And it's a mass produced statue that they just put up wherever they could
Which is why it came down so easy
Just like the Raleigh statue that just folded once it hit the ground last year

@GodEmperorDune ahh sorry. since Kevin Rudd prime ministers have been getting stabbed in the back by a member of their party to take the top job in the middle of their terms when really what should be happening is that the prime minister is elected because they are the leader of the majority party and thus, in a sense, elected by the people (since most people vote for local MPs based off her their leader is)
and i used wrong working there, i meant to say leadership spill which is when the current leader steps down to have the party to vote who the leader is

Oh or you could scroll up and have "1913" immediately

@Memor-X ah that is the term i was missing

Though they did put up a bunch in the 60s

3:03 AM
@Unionhawk minor details
Second ex-Walker staffer endorses his Dem opponent http://hill.cm/sK8N5dV
loooool

@TimStone huuuuuuuuuuuuuuue

While I'm unlikely to get lucky with Kobach losing watching Walker get pwned would be a good runner up
Although, once again, I'm not sure why we're even electing a govenor now that it's Foxconnsin

@TimStone rumor is a dem win would retract the foxconn deal
the town would probably go bankrupt but chances are that was happening either way

Didn't he give them like upfront money or something absurd on top of the tax breaks?

iirc free land
well the state and local govts have to buy all the land and foxconn does not
but i dunno if its some leasing shenanigans or what

@TimStone shortened url is still broken

they'll probably bitch that it's *high pitch whiny voice* "freedom of speech" but freedom of speech does not give any asshole the right to threaten bodily harm on a person

3:19 AM
@GodEmperorDune Urgh, yeah, the general sentiment isn't unusual unfortunately but their willingness to just put it out there at a kid was shocking even to me :/

@Memor-X i forget who pointed it out, but its often good to look at what the nazis are trying to do with their freedom of speech while they are whining about their speech being suppressed

@TimStone "what if i was 100% wrong about all the things"
> I think that more important than that is making certain that women are recognized by those companies. You know, I’ve always said that I didn’t want to be given a job because I was a female, I wanted it because I was the most well-qualified person for the job. And making certain that companies are going to move forward in that vein, that is what women want.
uhhhhh maybe pay the women well at the same time as doing the other things

3:30 AM
@TimStone "like i thought it was bad when it was just a shot of bacon" doesn't seem bad to me. "so i clicked to close it but then i caught a glimpse of orrin and involuntarily yelled “no” at my phone" still not sure what's bad. "and then i turned the sound on".........i'm scared to do this

@GodEmperorDune It's great because that has nothing to do with the issue, lol
Like unless the conclusion is "If they had to pay us fairly they wouldn't hire us!" in which case uhhhhh

@TimStone yeah exactly

a ringing endorsement
lmao

> The comments, made in a Facebook group for district parents, referred to Maddie as “it” and “thing,” and encouraged students to attack her.
Isn't that actually illegal in the USA?
Not that anything will come of it obviously, but it would be nice
> Officials closed a rural Oklahoma school system this week after the sheriff began investigating online threats against a transgender student.
> “A lot of the negative comments and what we perceived as threats were outside our county and, sometimes, out-of-state,” Christian said. But he added that the man who provoked the child’s mother lived in town.
> "I need education; we all need to be educated,” [Achille Superintendent Rick Beene] said. “It’s certainly something that people didn’t deal with 20, 30 years ago.”
good on the superintendent for acknowledging his own lack of awareness
Sounds like he'll try to actually better educate staff around the best way to help transgender students
Hopefully he will anyways
That said that's not going to do anything for people calling for physical violence
Those people are beyond hope and don't deserve education. They deserve to be locked up where they can't hurt anyone.

@Wipqozn And for their children to be taken away and assigned to someone who isn't a bigot

10:52 AM
I mean, I don't think being a bigot by itself is enough reason to take a persons kids away, it's the fact these people have taken to online harassment and calls for physical violence against a kid that pushes this over into criminal activity.
It definitely would be if they lived in Nova Scotia due to the cyberbullying laws, which I really hope other parts of Canada adopt

11:18 AM
@Nzall that's a good one
@Nzall true. we have anti-domestic violence campaigns here in Australia which push the message that what adults do pass on to their children. same can be said of bigotry like that
@Wipqozn more the rest of the world since you don't need to leave the house to post those things about someone on the other side of the world

11:39 AM
@Memor-X yeah and according to the article a lot of the group members weren't even from the area
The cyberbullying laws were made in response to a very specific incident which resulted in a teenager committing suicide. Horrific story but it was nice that the government stepped up and took action.

12:43 PM
@Unionhawk That's pretty shitty
I can see a non-shitty justification for it, but considering its the USA prison system, the benefit of doubt is a privilege it lost long ago.
Thar justification bring a fear of inciting a riot, but again, it'd the US for profit prison system

@puzzlepiece87 yep

@GodEmperorDune ... why is that not roped off?

@GodEmperorDune that's a lawsuit right there

Apparently, there were warning signs but no physical barrier.
Why was there no physical barrier?

@Memor-X It's Europe, so apart from a fine, there probably won't be any lawsuits

@Yuuki that’s why you don’t order from acme

2:49 PM
I feel like no matter what, the safety of the audience should always be first with regards to art. Having an 8 foot drop with not even a waist-high ribbon around it does not fit that
Danger should be simulated, not real

> The museum closed the exhibit to assess what happened
Someone had a dumb idea and no one said no.

@puzzlepiece87 this was a more articulate thing than what i was trying to word, so thanks

There, now that I'm not on mobile

@GodEmperorDune thumbs up

@puzzlepiece87 Yes it is, and I agree 110% , but it's intended to serve as a nice reminder that while this indeed a great step for Hollywood that there isn't an accurate representation of Asia and that there's still a lot of groups being underrepresented.
In other words this is a great step, but it's not the last step.
That and it's important for us to listen to the opinions of people from where the country is actually placed instead of just a bunch of people from Hollywood

@Wipqozn this is true

3:13 PM
@Wipqozn Indeed, everything you said is true.
@Wipqozn Another valid criticism of the film: casting some non-Chinese actors to play Chinese roles instead of just casting Chinese actors.

One of the disastrous side-effects of marginalization in Hollywood is that whenever a movie seems to break the mold (like having an mostly minority cast), everyone hypes it up as the "Great <Minority> Hope".
So now whenever you want a minority cast movie, you better be making something worthy of an Oscar.

It's just everything I've seen about this movie has been just how great it is without any discussion about how Hollywood still has a ways to go, so I wanted to share a different persepective that I saw

@puzzlepiece87 or at least scarjo

> As Chu famously said of Crazy Rich Asians: “It’s not a movie, it’s a movement,” a statement echoed by Constance Wu, his lead actress, and countless others on social media.

@Yuuki yeah this type of perfectionism helps the status quo.... "don't even try unless you are 100% sure" encourages people to not try to make changes at all

3:17 PM
Really, the best Western "Asian experience" movie this year was Bao.

@Wipqozn 2 articles from NYTimes with criticisms: "Not Asian Enough" "Elicits mixed feelings in Asia"

@Yuuki what movie was that the short for again? i missed it and want to get it when it hits streaming

@GodEmperorDune The Incredibles 2.

@Yuuki That was such a great short

@Yuuki thanks

3:18 PM
@GodEmperorDune Well played

It's weird but I'm more excited to have Bao when Incredibles 2 comes out on streaming than the actual movie.

@Yuuki Which is just a fantastic movie in it's own right. It does a great job of portraying how difficult being a single parent is, the undue burden often put on mothers to perform the majority of household duties, and also a great nod to the fact that men are more than capable of taking on more of that burden / all of it just like woman due - despite how Hollywood often portrays things.
In other words it has a great message of "hey, people, parenting is a thing everyone can and should do"
well how hollywood / society in general tries to portray things

plus it gave us perhaps the most creeper movie review in a while

And also, there's a weird deconstructionist message about superheroes that's unfortunately handled by the antagonist so that colors interpretations.

@GodEmperorDune Oh yes, we can't forget that

3:27 PM
@GodEmperorDune inb4 Kim Possible comes out.
Jul 25 at 16:35, by Ash
@GodEmperorDune Oh, right, and weird parts of the fandom are all "how dare you cast an actual teenager" for...uncomfortable reasons

@puzzlepiece87 oh yeah those are gonna be gross

Kind of related, one thing I'm grateful for growing up is that my mother and father did a fairly good job of having a "balanced household" as it were. It certainly wasn't perfectly balanced, and I know my mother took on more of that burden in certain aspects, but overall they both played a large role in househould duties and raising me and my sister. It's certainly helped to ensure I had an open mind and realized that traditional gender roles are a society thing.
talking about the inc 2 got me thinking on that haha

TIL @Wipqozn's mom is a superhero

@Wipqozn Grateful for the exact same.

They also had a relationship heavily based in open communication too, which has obviously been a great influence

3:30 PM
@GodEmperorDune hahahahaha
@Wipqozn I try to be better at open communication but my parents were slightly more passive aggressive and I have to work to shake that habit lol

@GodEmperorDune So pretty much all my friends think my mother is the best possible mother. She's just a generally kind hearted person that's always putting others before herself.
In fact sometimes I need to remind her it's okay to be selfish sometimes and just do something for yourself haha

@Wipqozn That's wonderful :)

The only people I've talked to who didn't understand Bao were people who didn't get that the majority of it was a dream sequence

@GodEmperorDune I read Jezebel for 1.5 years to become a better feminist. Their go to example isn't even movie reviews, it's every time Vogue sends a male writer to interview a female (they do this often).

@GodEmperorDune We already have people complaining they cast the actress too young FOR REASONS

3:35 PM
Amazing that he brought both sides together to abolish ICE

@Ronan false, pork buns are literally alive

@puzzlepiece87 Relevant clip
The only youtube link I found for this Canadian TV show was region restricted to the US
The relevancy will make sense near the end

@Wipqozn Lol and that one's region-restricted for me.
Thanks for the link though!

@puzzlepiece87 its a bunch of women making products for women that are identical to men's products but are pink and more expensive. @GodEmperorDune what does this mean

From the perspective of how he would decide a case absolutely nothing, basically
From the perspective of whether she'll vote to confirm him, she will, based on nothing
But it sounds like something which is what she wants

yeah i agree with @TimStone's analysis
it basically gives Sen Collins clearance to vote for him and then if he overturns roe v wade she can go "oh no i was bamboozled"

Alright, I am missing like half the details here

5:11 PM
@Ash here are some of the previous times collins has done a similar thing
BREAKING: Charlie Brown receives assurances from Lucy that she will not pull the football away. This time for serious. https://twitter.com/LisaDNews/status/1031945884534300672

(Kavanaugh is the Supreme Court nominee to replace Roberts, the concern is that he'd overturn women's right to choose (i.e. abortion) among other things, people called Collins concerned about that, she got confirmation from him that he considers it "settled law", which is good enough for her despite being meaningless)

"settled law" is the keyword for "i'm not going to overturn it", however it has no teeth and there is no real reason for Kavanaugh to stick to that line once he gets on the court, because lifetime appointment

He is incidentally also someone who worked on the Bill Clinton case and really, really wanted to know some intimate details about the affair with Monica Lewinsky in an apparent gambit to embarrass Clinton but also that's just weird dude
@GodEmperorDune The key point being that it's not even a lie, since the law is currently settled but that doesn't mean he feels the past Court decided it correctly, lol
"Ah well that's good enough for me then" 🤷

@TimStone good nuanced point, yes

how could I have known that this ideological conservative judge would do the thing that's been a conservative dream for 30 years
etc

So there's nothing really stopping him from ultimately overturning it singlehandedly?

I mean "singlehandedly" as in "with 4 others", and they technically need to have a case put in front of them to do it,

Oh, no, not single-handedly, but conservatives will have a majority so it would be possible if an applicable case was brought to them

but it's another key piece in place to doing it

and it's highly likely that relevant cases are already in the pipeline

The hardest piece of it honestly
@GodEmperorDune there's about a 90% chance Mike DeWine and friends are drafting something
or honestly the more likely route is some state does an actual or effective ban (heartbeat for example) and then supreme court goes "yes this is ok"

5:27 PM
i mean red states have been pushing boundaries for the past several years, planned parenthood and such sue immediately
so the cases are there

Lovely :(

"Ex-Trump attorney Cohen in discussions with U.S. prosecutors to plead guilty - source" - Get updates at Reuters.com
No article yet just an alert

(spoiler: it's tech employees)
(but the article is all about conspiracies)
NEW: @ABC has learned that Michael Cohen has entered into a plea agreement with federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York.
still no article yet
in the meantime, here is an article about the prison strike
"Nineteen days of peaceful protest are planned across the nation, organised largely by prisoners themselves. ...'Other inmates have been warned that if they continue to contact advocacy groups they will be moved to the most brutal camps.'" #PrisonStrike https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/aug/20/prison-labor-protest-america-jailhouse-lawyers-speak

@GodEmperorDune Not surprised. News agencies, credible ones anyways, are moving more towards breaking news alerts twitter posts for a quick 'this is happening' until they have time to write a more detailed and researched article
Source: I used to work at one

@Wipqozn yeah that php isn't gonna code itself

@GodEmperorDune :(

@GodEmperorDune phone zaps planned throughout the period, including today
For more information check out @IWW_IWOC

@Unionhawk what is a phone zap?

5:56 PM
thanks

> Pick targets that will feel the pressure and are in some way vulnerable. Phone zaps for prisoners involves dealing with state bureaucracies and prison administrations. Avoid public relation officers and state directors; it's already their job to lie and handle bad PR.

At prisons for example, wardens are essentially middle management who fear for their jobs. That is a vulnerability. The point is to have an organizational and political analysis of the institution you are messing with. Pick targets that get results or are vulnerable over anything else.
Call-in campaigns

phone zap sounds cooler tbh

It does

With a more specific goal of both tying up phones all day and letting DOCs know we're watching them
