I agree with not wanting folks camping out in the park, but the solution is to then set up a place where they can stay. Everyone has a right to a roof over their head.

@Wipqozn I'm not sure "won" is really the best word. As I understand it it's more that we postured and fought endless proxy wars until the Soviet Union fell apart.

@GodEmperorDune ahh sorry. since Kevin Rudd prime ministers have been getting stabbed in the back by a member of their party to take the top job in the middle of their terms when really what should be happening is that the prime minister is elected because they are the leader of the majority party and thus, in a sense, elected by the people (since most people vote for local MPs based off her their leader is)
and i used wrong working there, i meant to say leadership spill which is when the current leader steps down to have the party to vote who the leader is

@GodEmperorDune Urgh, yeah, the general sentiment isn't unusual unfortunately but their willingness to just put it out there at a kid was shocking even to me :/
@Memor-X i forget who pointed it out, but its often good to look at what the nazis are trying to do with their freedom of speech while they are whining about their speech being suppressed
@TimStone "what if i was 100% wrong about all the things"
> I think that more important than that is making certain that women are recognized by those companies. You know, I’ve always said that I didn’t want to be given a job because I was a female, I wanted it because I was the most well-qualified person for the job. And making certain that companies are going to move forward in that vein, that is what women want.
uhhhhh maybe pay the women well at the same time as doing the other things
@TimStone "like i thought it was bad when it was just a shot of bacon" doesn't seem bad to me. "so i clicked to close it but then i caught a glimpse of orrin and involuntarily yelled “no” at my phone" still not sure what's bad. "and then i turned the sound on".........i'm scared to do this

good on the superintendent for acknowledging his own lack of awareness
Sounds like he'll try to actually better educate staff around the best way to help transgender students
Hopefully he will anyways
That said that's not going to do anything for people calling for physical violence
Those people are beyond hope and don't deserve education. They deserve to be locked up where they can't hurt anyone.
I mean, I don't think being a bigot by itself is enough reason to take a persons kids away, it's the fact these people have taken to online harassment and calls for physical violence against a kid that pushes this over into criminal activity.
It definitely would be if they lived in Nova Scotia due to the cyberbullying laws, which I really hope other parts of Canada adopt
@Nzall true. we have anti-domestic violence campaigns here in Australia which push the message that what adults do pass on to their children. same can be said of bigotry like that
@Wipqozn more the rest of the world since you don't need to leave the house to post those things about someone on the other side of the world
@Memor-X yeah and according to the article a lot of the group members weren't even from the area
The cyberbullying laws were made in response to a very specific incident which resulted in a teenager committing suicide. Horrific story but it was nice that the government stepped up and took action.

@Wipqozn My guess is that it's more like the Aziz Ansari thing - lots of sex happening and people know what happened in their particular instance was bad, but internally question whether it was actually a crime even if it was.
@GodEmperorDune Guardian messed up on the mid-article photo, I'm thinking.
I feel like no matter what, the safety of the audience should always be first with regards to art. Having an 8 foot drop with not even a waist-high ribbon around it does not fit that
@puzzlepiece87 Yes it is, and I agree 110% , but it's intended to serve as a nice reminder that while this indeed a great step for Hollywood that there isn't an accurate representation of Asia and that there's still a lot of groups being underrepresented.
In other words this is a great step, but it's not the last step.
That and it's important for us to listen to the opinions of people from where the country is actually placed instead of just a bunch of people from Hollywood
One of the disastrous side-effects of marginalization in Hollywood is that whenever a movie seems to break the mold (like having an mostly minority cast), everyone hypes it up as the "Great <Minority> Hope".
So now whenever you want a minority cast movie, you better be making something worthy of an Oscar.
It's just everything I've seen about this movie has been just how great it is without any discussion about how Hollywood still has a ways to go, so I wanted to share a different persepective that I saw
> As Chu famously said of Crazy Rich Asians: “It’s not a movie, it’s a movement,” a statement echoed by Constance Wu, his lead actress, and countless others on social media.
@Yuuki yeah this type of perfectionism helps the status quo.... "don't even try unless you are 100% sure" encourages people to not try to make changes at all
@Yuuki Which is just a fantastic movie in it's own right. It does a great job of portraying how difficult being a single parent is, the undue burden often put on mothers to perform the majority of household duties, and also a great nod to the fact that men are more than capable of taking on more of that burden / all of it just like woman due - despite how Hollywood often portrays things.
In other words it has a great message of "hey, people, parenting is a thing everyone can and should do"
well how hollywood / society in general tries to portray things
Kind of related, one thing I'm grateful for growing up is that my mother and father did a fairly good job of having a "balanced household" as it were. It certainly wasn't perfectly balanced, and I know my mother took on more of that burden in certain aspects, but overall they both played a large role in househould duties and raising me and my sister. It's certainly helped to ensure I had an open mind and realized that traditional gender roles are a society thing.
talking about the inc 2 got me thinking on that haha
@GodEmperorDune So pretty much all my friends think my mother is the best possible mother. She's just a generally kind hearted person that's always putting others before herself.
In fact sometimes I need to remind her it's okay to be selfish sometimes and just do something for yourself haha
@GodEmperorDune I read Jezebel for 1.5 years to become a better feminist. Their go to example isn't even movie reviews, it's every time Vogue sends a male writer to interview a female (they do this often).
@puzzlepiece87 its a bunch of women making products for women that are identical to men's products but are pink and more expensive. A new employee asks why they're doing this when the bosses boss comes on, is a man, and is just 'yes pink fantastic women love pink. Good job ladies. This is officially man approved"
I paraphrased that last part to capture the meaning

Today, I resigned as Speaker of the House and will file to run for the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals this afternoon. I am looking forward to talking with my fellow West Virginians and working to earn their trust and votes to serve as their Supreme Court Justice.

(Kavanaugh is the Supreme Court nominee to replace Roberts, the concern is that he'd overturn women's right to choose (i.e. abortion) among other things, people called Collins concerned about that, she got confirmation from him that he considers it "settled law", which is good enough for her despite being meaningless)
"settled law" is the keyword for "i'm not going to overturn it", however it has no teeth and there is no real reason for Kavanaugh to stick to that line once he gets on the court, because lifetime appointment
He is incidentally also someone who worked on the Bill Clinton case and really, really wanted to know some intimate details about the affair with Monica Lewinsky in an apparent gambit to embarrass Clinton but also that's just weird dude
@GodEmperorDune The key point being that it's not even a lie, since the law is currently settled but that doesn't mean he feels the past Court decided it correctly, lol
in the meantime, here is an article about the prison strike
"Nineteen days of peaceful protest are planned across the nation, organised largely by prisoners themselves. ...'Other inmates have been warned that if they continue to contact advocacy groups they will be moved to the most brutal camps.'" #PrisonStrike https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/aug/20/prison-labor-protest-america-jailhouse-lawyers-speak
@GodEmperorDune Not surprised. News agencies, credible ones anyways, are moving more towards breaking news alerts twitter posts for a quick 'this is happening' until they have time to write a more detailed and researched article
> Pick targets that will feel the pressure and are in some way vulnerable. Phone zaps for prisoners involves dealing with state bureaucracies and prison administrations. Avoid public relation officers and state directors; it's already their job to lie and handle bad PR.
At prisons for example, wardens are essentially middle management who fear for their jobs. That is a vulnerability. The point is to have an organizational and political analysis of the institution you are messing with. Pick targets that get results or are vulnerable over anything else.
