“Astounding” find in Russia and Alaska: some Arctic ground isn’t freezing—in winter. This ground is what insulates carbon-rich permafrost below from heat at the surface—permafrost that holds its own vast stores of greenhouse gases. My @NatGeo story https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2018/08/news-arctic-permafrost-may-thaw-faster-than-expected/
Yaaaaaaay :|
Per @jonathanvswan - GOP strategists are concerned the base doesn’t appreciate the threat of a blue wave, due to their mistrust of polls/media. From @jpiacenza - only 28% (!) of GOP voters said they would trust a poll indicating Dems would take the house: https://morningconsult.com/2018/08/16/a-poll-of-polls-what-do-americans-trust/

Will Bruce Ohr, whose family received big money for helping to create the phony, dirty and discredited Dossier, ever be fired from the Jeff Sessions “Justice” Department? A total joke!
I like this game we play where he pretends he's not the President even though he is to devastating effect

Love to neg many things with one tweet, including my own department

@TimStone Oh my god this entire presidency has just been the setup for a feel-good lifetime event about the effects of cyber-bullying

> A California bill seeking to limit restaurants to serving children water or unflavored milk with their meals passed the Assembly this week and is now making its way to Gov. Jerry Brown's (D) desk.
Holy crap that's a misleading lede from The Hill

@TimStone Oh?

The bill says that companies couldn't market the meals with anything other than that, e.g. not show the Happy Meal with a Coke. But you could still order anything

@TimStone Oh, wow. Yeah, that's not just misleading, it's wrong

I don't know that the bill is necessarily useful, but the framing is all out of whack

the hill,,, is bad?
more analysis required

3:15 PM
I mean yeah but they usually just copy from somewhere else and they failed to even dot that correctly
It follows with "The bill, aimed at combating childhood obesity, would not preclude children or parents from ordering alternatives, however" which is the most roundabout way of saying what you just said wasn't actually true

@TimStone I mean, this isn't exactly a new idea

The lasers part being taken seriously (well, "seriously", it's not very feasible) is still a bit new, Reagan's program still involved interceptor missiles. But I mostly linked for the graphic which I can only assume will now become the Space Force insignia

6:53 PM
In space it might be more feasible actually because there's basically no air to scatter it

Yeah I don't think it's the method itself that's the issue but the ability to realistically identify & target threats efficiently

@puzzlepiece87 To be fair, it's not like there's much that could make their economy significantly worse.

7:38 PM
@Yuuki True!

@TimStone arm and laser insignia looks good
This is odd. At a ceremony honoring Customs and Border Protection (CBP) @realDonaldTrump is repeatedly referring to the organization as "CBC".
i recently read about the horrific things that CBP is doing so i am for abolishing them along with ICE
but at this point i don't know if trump is trying to neg them or just doesn't care to pronounce it properly

honestly, most of DHS can be put back into like, justice etc

@Unionhawk except for those parts that can go in the sea

right, coast guard maybe defense
or, hm
idk

hue yeah i guess coast guard can get in the sea if its not already there

7:52 PM
Some of it is in the river
coast guard sector ohio river thank you for your service

is that even a coast?

They patrol all US waterways
And some international waterways

it's not called the "bank guard"
bah

The border is 120 miles inland or whatever so why not the coast

Well, Ohio River is not 100 miles inland
it is vastly more than 100 miles
lol, apparently Jake Tapper had to issue a correction on a fact check he did and his correction is still wrong?

7:55 PM
@Unionhawk jake tapper is more like hot take tapper these days

(it was the him intentionally (this might be harsh but I'm sticking with it since he tripled down on it) misinterpreting "per a dang Koch study m4a will save the american people $2T" as "m4a will lower federal healthcare spending by 2T")
(which is a very different claim as it turns out!)

oh yeah i saw that thread

@Unionhawk Yeah I don't even know why he's going so hard on this, it's just ridiculous. I don't know who is right but honestly I don't even care that much, so it's annoying he's acting like it's a big deal versus gestures towards everything

@TimStone To me it reads as intentional misinterpretation on Mr. Tapper's part
"the american people" is a superset of "the federal government"

@GodEmperorDune He must really like Canadian news
I'm hilarious et cetera

> The FTC argued that DirecTV ads for a discounted 12-month programming package were deceptive because they "fail[ed] to clearly disclose that the package requires a two-year contract."

DirecTV prices rose by up to $45 per month in the second year, and cancellation fees of up to $480 applied when customers canceled before the two years were up, according to the FTC.

"DirecTV also fails to disclose that its offer of free premium channels for three months is in fact a negative option continuity plan that requires consumers to proactively cancel to avoid automatic charges on their credit or

I don't think cable contracts are even a thing in Canada, at least not in Nova Scotia.
@puzzlepiece87 thanks

@Wipqozn Exhibits are not court transcripts but they are official filings with the court.

9:14 PM
Yeah I see why the judge reached the decision they did since below the price it does indicate its for signing up for 24 month contract
No idea what regulations there are around the sizing of fine print

@Wipqozn In Belgium, "fine print" is banned in contractrs

@Nzall As it should be, but this isn't a contract it's an advertisement. Not that I agree it shouldn't be banned there either, but if USA law says it's fine there's not much the judge can do.

9:31 PM
Hey look!
It's @Yuuki 's friends the fire ants from Houston proposing solutions to Houston traffic problems :D
Well, actually no, since the fire ant solution is to dig alternative routes if the existing one is jammed

@puzzlepiece87 sounds like some elon type deal

@puzzlepiece87 I mean, it's easier when you all have the same goals, I'd imagine.
You live in the same place and, judging by the description of the experiment, your food/job is in the same place.
There's another experiment that describes 10 nests but I'm not sure those nests were studied together or separately.

The next experiment is to replace one in 25 ants with a "dick ant". This guy, screws over the traffic flow by cutting other ants off, riding other ants' butts and then slamming on the brakes, never uses an ant turn signal, speeds up to cut in front of other ants and then slams on the brakes and turns. You could paint a Ram logo on these ants to track them.

LOL. I was thinking "glue a cellphone" to one random ant. Then take another and put mirror so it can see its makeup. Then another with no antennae to signal other ants (because those behind can reads its mind). Or enf

@TimStone :/ the thing with abuse is that it doesn't matter if the victim was an asshole to you or not, it has little bearing on whether the abuse actually happened
see also the asia argento stuff (she's been accused of raping a man) and all the thinkpieces about how this wrecks #metoo (it doesn't) because she was a leader (she wasn't) and she has been exposed as an abuser now
tl;dr: believe victims
@TimStone jeez, how many times does he have to attempt to do it IN THE SAME YEAR before it's a problem?

@GodEmperorDune Yeah, no value judgment on the story itself but this seems unlikely to settle anytime soon
@GodEmperorDune The best lawyers

Yes, women can be abusers. Yes, women can be abuse victims. Yes, #MeToo is about listening to ALL survivors. And yes, there is still a gendered component to the movement overall. All of these things can be true at once. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/aug/20/asia-argento-accused-paying-off-actor-metoo-weinstein-jimmy-bennett
here's the asia argento story, since we haven't covered it in here yet

11:08 PM
@GodEmperorDune I hadn't heard about that, that's pretty shitty.
There's so many sexual assault cases coming out of Hollywood lately its honestly hard to keep track. It's horrifying and kind of reassuring at the same time? Since maybe this is the start of Hollywood getting better, add hopefully sexual assault cases getting better in general

@Wipqozn yeah i hope so

@GodEmperorDune honestly I think the biggest thing to come out is that it wasn't a bunch of nameless execs doing all the abuse but actors we see all the time
I feel like abuse happening in Hollywood is something a lot of people have known for a while, but it was always assumed it was just some nameless exec

i mean it's lots of people in different positions
not just execs, not just actors, also other people on set like that one stunt coordinator

@GodEmperorDune yeah sorry I meant it wasn't just nameless execs
Which is what I feel people thought before

@Wipqozn yeah i think we are in agreement, just wording slightly differently to say the same thing
