> guess who's getting a pardon! everyone gets a pardon! and you get a pardon, and you get a pardon, and you get a pardon, and you get a pa...oh not you Cohen, you'be been mean to me by taping our conversation, you don't get a pardon
and if he does pardon manafort i'm going to post Peter Griffon's Can't Touch Me lyrics but replacing "diplomatic immunity" with "best buddies with the Trumpster"
actually just on that, what are presidential pardons meant for? like it seems to be a huge injustice to go over the top of the courts and jury just because one person who happens to be president just says they're innocent

It's supposed to be used as a check on the criminal justice system but like many flaws we didn't anticipate a wholly shameless, self-serving huckster taking control

3:04 AM
.@AlanDersh: "Every candidate violates the election laws when they run for president...here they're trying to elevate this into an impeachable offense or a felony against the president." #Tucker https://t.co/PT87wHBn9f
"Violate election laws? We all do it!"

> everyone bribes officials for the FIFA World Cup hosting bids so we do it to, it's apart of "the game"

lol Fox News calling for Cyber Force now but it doesn't sound as nice as Space Force
"Now that he has been indicted, Rep. Hunter will be removed from his committee assignments pending the resolution of this matter," @SpeakerRyan says Hunter is chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee
lol infrastructure

4:13 AM
@TimStone he knew he was being investigated for this stuff, it's an own goal at this point

It's pretty funny

@TimStone the electoral college and congress and the courts were supposed to help but :shrug:
@TimStone wut
@TimStone tbh i think it's more of a "i don't know how to buy things without a slush fund" that kept him from resigning
@TimStone goddammit trump is gonna put barron on this
the "age of computer"

4:40 AM
@GodEmperorDune did we go back in time? we're in "age of phone" now

4:55 AM
Source familiar with internal WH discussions says WH staffers were “stunned” and “rattled” by the day’s bombshell developments. The source went on to say that it would take a “couple of days” for staffers to come to grips with what happened to Cohen and Manafort.
lol imagine thinking at this point that they did not, in fact, do crimes
Like even if you think Trump had nothing to do with any of it clearly some people were Doing Crimes!
I mean ffs Flynn tried to kidnap Gulen, lol

5:11 AM
@TimStone and then Trump comes into the room and goes "it's fake news, they're innocent, just grabbing my pen to sign the pardons"
North Korea hasn't halted its nuclear program, according to the UN's nuclear watchdog http://bit.ly/2NaBZUx

This is a historic storm. #HurricaneLane is the strongest hurricane to ever threaten Hawaii, and the first Category 5 on record to come this close to the islands. At 922mb, it is just 7mb away from becoming the most intense hurricane ever in the Central Pacific.

6:06 AM
@TimStone dammit

3 hours later…
8:56 AM
@TimStone what is "mb" in this context?
all I can think of is megabytes and I don't think that's what it means...

@Chippies millibar

@Nzall thanks

it's a unit of atmospheric pressure. Hurricanes are zones of extremely low pressure, and the lower the pressure, the stronger the winds
Normal atmospheric pressure is around 1015-1020 mb
Standard sea pressure, by definition, is 1013.25 mb

Global News: Rudy Giuliani says Trump is ‘absolutely in the clear’ following Cohen guilty plea.
https://globalnews.ca/news/4401057/rudy-giuliani-trump-cohen-guilty/
@TimStone It's horrifying to think that a large percentage of Americans only trust Fox News
Also okay if they all do it then it's time to start charging them for it
"Corruption is okay if everyone is doing!"
> Giuliani went on to say that the charges demonstrate a “pattern of lies and dishonesty” by Cohen over a significant period of time.

2:05 PM
If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don’t retain the services of Michael Cohen!
Congrats, first tweet without a lie

@GodEmperorDune I mean, he was a good lawyer in the sense that if you were a crook who needed a proxy and weren't going to be under increased scrutiny in the future.

2:39 PM
> instead i recommend Rudy Giuliani who ignores reality, says what you want to hear and makes up the rest
@Yuuki he was a good lawyer until the bus came
> *pushes Cohen onto the road* I KNOW NOTHING!
which is more or less the copy and paste for anyone who works under Trump. Manafort will be next if he talks

HAPPENING NOW: the army has evacuated everyone — except the National Park Service employees who can apparently ggf — from Arlington Cemetery.
It turns out asserting someone would be strong on Wyoming's borders was in fact not compelling enough, that dude lost the primary to the state treasurer

@TimStone rekt

4:32 PM
more right wing people getting in on the grift
What's your opinion of Q?

@GodEmperorDune Q is amazing and is doing amazing work
I mean, his trolling of the entire conservative machine is just brilliant

and here i thought he just liked trolling picard

Trump’s company approved $420,000 in payments to Cohen, relying on ‘sham’ invoices, prosecutors say https://wapo.st/2Pu4fTg?tid=ss_tw&utm_term=.8ad13b6aebc6
i kinda want to say nice

It many ways it would be far more fulfilling and funny for them to dismantle his business than go after him directly
tfw you missed what the point was
"I'm skeptical this will help most Americans"
"But look, the stock market is up!"

OK, some people have asked me to comment on SinglePayerGate, the claim that the Sanders single-payer health plan would actually increase health spending, and that Sanders is lying when he says otherwise. 1/ http://theweek.com/articles/791236/fact-checkers-have-medicareforall-problem

5:28 PM
actually, removing the profit motive from the payment of healthcare costs will INCREASE spending
it's science
current spending - profits > current spending
science

math tho
but yeah this is in support of that

(this simplified equation does exclude + new patients, but 1. the studies I've seen put that number as less than profits, and 2. if your lower spending is predicated on people not going to the doctor, then, friend,)
(2 is obviously the more important point here)

Plus like, if people didn't fear financial hardship in getting problems checked out, resulting in stuff being caught sooner, like?

@TimStone yes this is also a factor
preventative care is way fucking cheaper

"Ah, well, you'll merely have to take an antibiotic for that pneumonia instead of a two week stay in intensive care because you almost died"

5:34 PM
The equation is Really Complicated as it turns out and it's not as simple as Jake Tapper's "well, by definition federal spending will go up so by your logic no the american people will spend more because I'm using an obtuse definition of the american people"

Indeed, who knew?
lol holy shit the Trump takes this morning are particularly bad
I know it's the afternoon now don't judge me
Oh my god Candace doubled down and attacked the (purported) cousin of Mollie Tibbetts?
Just incredible
EXCLUSIVE: President @realDonaldTrump on if he knew about the Cohen payments. See more from his interview with @ainsleyearhardt tomorrow 6-9amET.
That is...an answer
My word

Paraphrase what he said in one sentence or less, if you please?

"Yeah I knew about it, I tweeted about it, but I don't know what campaign finance violations are so I'm gonna pretend it's no big deal and also Obama"

that was two sentences

Like he just kind of rambles on about it all so that's what you get
@Unionhawk I fixed it Trump-style

5:50 PM
@TimStone Thanks Obama (Thank you)

Just throw in some non-sentence-ending punctuation until it's a singular stream of consciousness

@TimStone Not sure what the perjury concerns are since Trump will admit to anything in a face-to-face interview if asked in even the softest whisper.
It's not perjury to say "Yeah I definitely did that thing you're asking me about, but it was no big deal"

@TimStone I'm sure this won't be biased at all

For everyone's context, the Obama thing is related to the fine the campaign was hit with which I feel was for something a little different than what Cohen did, but I don't know if that's true legally

Lest you think he's a hypocrite, he actually disagreed with her getting an abortion and is in fact just spiteful af

6:11 PM
Ah, misleading tweet then for sure.
Technically correct but misleading.

@puzzlepiece87 Yeah, I agree. The event definitely matters here, but not the way one would initially assume

@puzzlepiece87 Wait, wouldn't this be considered psychotherapy?

NEW: Another federal judge, this time in Maryland, has rejected the Trump administration's effort to get legal challenges to the inclusion of a citizenship question in the 2020 Census tossed out of court https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4780444/8-22-18-Kravitz-Opinion.pdf

Wow, the CIA's lobby really is ominous af
Sarah Sanders just said the Manafort case has absolutely nothing to do with the Trump campaign, lol
I'm pretty sure it does have to do with the campaign even if you want to say it wasn't sanctioned behaviour

6:41 PM
@Yuuki Sorry, this joke is wooshing me.

lol Sarah Sanders getting grilled

@puzzlepiece87 It's a fairly common myth in Asian countries that blood type is a determining factor for your personality.
Among other things.
A pseudoscientific belief exists in some East Asian countries, that a person's ABO blood type is predictive of a person's personality, temperament, and compatibility with others. This superstition is similar to how astrological signs are perceived as influencing factors in a person's life in other countries. One of the reasons Japan developed the blood type personality indicator theory was in reaction against ethnic stereotypes coming from Europe. The popular belief originates with publications by Masahiko Nomi in the 1970s. The scientific community generally dismisses blood type personality theories...
Aaaaaand of course it's based in racism.
> The purpose of Furukawa's studies was to "penetrate the essence of the racial traits of the Taiwanese, who recently revolted and behaved so cruelly." Based on a finding that 41.2% of Taiwanese samples had type O blood, Furukawa assumed that the Taiwanese rebelliousness was genetic. His reasoning was supported by the fact that among the Ainu, whose temperament was characterized as submissive, only 23.8% had type O.
> In conclusion, Furukawa suggested that the Japanese should increase intermarriage with the Taiwanese to reduce the number of Taiwanese with type O blood.

@TimStone it's that fuckin matrix lobby fight scene
literally
like
metal detector in fight around a bunch of tiled pillars

7:06 PM
@Yuuki Thanks so much, I had no idea about all that.
@Yuuki The closest I've come to this is the cold food/hot food thing, where my mother in law says she's (constitutionally) a hot food person and if she eats cold food it will make her sick, whereas some people are the opposite (in her telling).
Sounds like modern day belief in the humors to me, but I don't give her much of a hard time about it. I'm glad she enjoys her hot food and that's most of what matters.

Yeah but then she tells me not to eat so many cashews and now we're in a Cold War.

@Yuuki xD

(1 person killed, one injured, a number of houses evacuating for at least 48 hours and a few others will be without gas service for a few days)

@Ash ... is this not the second house that's exploded for unknown reasons?
I feel like I've heard similar news somewhere.

user15026
7:17 PM
Possibly, but not in my city

It is unfortunately not a completely uncommon thing
Usually gas leaks, sometimes arson, other times methlabs, etc
New York state investigators have issued a subpoena to Michael Cohen as part of Trump Foundation probe. http://apne.ws/yspxISW
Ahahaha

user15026
@TimStone By the response, I suspect they're leaning towards gas leak

> By the early 19th century, several other countries began to follow Britain’s lead, including France and Germany. In 1816, Baltimore became the first city in the United States to adopt gas lighting. “Darkness, our primordial dread,” Henley wrote, “was about to lose its dominion.”

But the adoption of natural gas also caused a great deal of anxiety. The Catholic Church strongly opposed it, arguing that God had made a clear delineation between night and day.
I'm still religious, but my personal doubt is enormous.
When literally every little thing is supposedly ordained by God and yet, as the Calvin and Hobbes quote goes: It’s hard to be religious when certain people are never incinerated by bolts of lightning.

@Ash And a dead dog

@puzzlepiece87 If you feel this way, why are you still religious?

7:29 PM
A huge correction. Will Trump officials update their talking points? And if they don't, doesn't it tell us all how the villification of undocumented immigrants is really a stand in for nativism more broadly?? https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/investigations/2018/08/22/mollie-tibbetts-alleged-killer-iowa-legally-lawyer-missing-student-body-found-brooklyn-trump/1064567002/
I mean I don't think we needed this correction to know that at this point but yes

@murgatroid99 Speaking only for myself, 1. I've seen people change in unlikely enough ways to be faith-bolstering, 2. It's something I'm willing to be wrong about

@puzzlepiece87 So, you mean that you see some benefits to being religious that outweigh the potential risk of being incorrect about it?

@murgatroid99 Yup, that's probably a fair way to put it.

@TimStone i'm gonna go with "nope, they're not going to update the racist talking points"
AP: New York state investigators have issued a subpoena to Michael Cohen as part of Trump Foundation probe.
the crimes keep coming and they don't stop coming

7:53 PM
@GodEmperorDune Feds said I broke rules and I hit the ground running

@puzzlepiece87 :D

I had to double check this was a serious Bernie email because while this is an exceptionally relevant point this framing is uhhhh

@TimStone rumor is that this is azalia banks further dunking on elon

I know we have to challenge business as usual and Bezos is a very stark example of the inequality inherent in the system today but Amazon is also one of the most reputable companies in the country and people like space (SPACE FORCE!) so

@TimStone SOKY DSA has advised me to give socialist literature to anyone with a bernie sticker on their car and this is close enough so here you go marxism.org

@TimStone their warehouse workers might beg to differ, and lets not forget the literally shitty code expose

8:28 PM
No, of course, but like unless you are one of those workers, who already know you're being treated unfairly, I kind of feel like the general public is just like "Woo space!" 🤔

fair
and amazon prime video does have an exclusive on new seasons of '"the expanse" so....

I'm of several minds on the "people like amazon thing" because like, I dunno

Like I think there's some lightly held association that SPAAAAAAAAAAACE is helping everyone, in some magical way, so the comparison is like "mmm 🤷"

I feel like people can be persuaded on that front
Because as a contrast, a lot of people don't like walmart

SPAAAAAAAAAAAAACE FORCE, exclusively for same day delivery

8:29 PM
but there are other factors there
it's easier to watch a Walmart take over an entire community

not gonna lie, i bought a physical book on amazon because it was half the price of the same book in a brick and mortar store
gotta save up to send money to DSA national only for them to waste it on something dumb

Rep. Duncan Hunter, an early Trump endorser who was indicted yesterday, tells KGTV, "This is the new Department of Justice. This is the Democrats' arm of law enforcement...It's happening with Trump and it's happening with me." https://abcn.ws/2OXqWya https://t.co/GpdVrL475d
Buddy
My dude
No

@GodEmperorDune Per a resolution at the convention, supposedly they're supposed to send us a financial report this month

Just, just no

@TimStone lol wut
the DOJ run by long time democrat Jeffrey Beauregard sessions

8:34 PM
@TimStone 🤔

I don't even know what to say about this because it's so incredibly stupid
Like they're over here with the credit card statements saying "Bro you literally couldn't have paid for this in any sort of legitimate way" "DEEP STAAAAAAAAAATE"
He's probably hoping that by attacking the DoJ Trump will be like "Wow that's a nice guy I better pardon him" which lol do I have news for you

This is pretty shady right here. "The Sergeants Benevolent Association is proposing to offer $500 cash rewards to people who help suspects that are resisting rather than tape the altercation." http://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2018/08/22/sergeants-union-offering-bystanders-cash-reward-to-help-nypd-officers
Cops, man

Unsatisfied with merely shooting suspects they've opted to bring bystanders into the mix

@TimStone pretty much

@GodEmperorDune This tweet is either just confusingly worded or deliberately misleading. It says that they reward people who help suspects, but the linked article says that it rewards people who help police officers

8:43 PM
Oh, I didn't even notice that since it's the SBA

likely just missing an "apprehend" in between "help" and "suspects"

I think it was just a confusion, obviously the condition is that people would help the cops
But yeah, that's kind of batshit insane

At first I thought the tweet was saying that it was some kind of bizarre entrapment scheme

Even in situations where you assume 100% good faith by police it seems unlikely Random Joe Bystander is equipped to be anything more than a liability for everyone involved
I'm sure it'll work out sometimes but like, encouraging the gamble here seems not great

We also return to why are there two police unions in NYC

8:47 PM
The article talks about introducing a good samaritan law but I bet that doesn't apply if the bystander hurts the cop, heh

usually good samaritans only cover liability up to your training
which would be fun
I'd argue that's a fun situation for the officer too but I suppose there's likely some "bystander" or "first responder" type language that makes them special
or something

> “Are they (protesters) any different than Nazis of the 1930s, 1920s in Germany tearing down statues, burning books?” [former NC governor] McCrory asked during his morning show on WBT radio

But like if you are not cpr certified and you injure someone while performing cpr, you can usually be held liable

I mean yeah dude we can all jump online and definitely still find out you're stanning some racists for starters so pretty different actually
"Oh no they took down your 1913 statue how will we ever learn the Confederacy sucked?"

The date comparison of when that went up vs when the war ended transposed to ww2 would be the equivalent of neo nazis putting up a statue in 1993

9:08 PM
To anyone in IT who's ever pulled an all nighter because of a crisis, slept at work because that's what it took to respond, or flew to Ghana to retrieve the sole intact instance of your domain controller, RESPECT🙏 https://www.wired.com/story/notpetya-cyberattack-ukraine-russia-code-crashed-the-world/
There are so many levels to this but that's crazy

@Unionhawk Well said.
"OK Google what is a domain controller?"
Oh wow that's important.

Important like front nose gear, an odd segue into this:

Someone should probably do a deep dive into why these kinds of grifts are so profitable for the people pulling them but 🤷

9:27 PM
@TimStone Hoooly shit that's cool
@TimStone Wow

@TimStone Technically, a Ghana staffer flew to Nigeria and rendezvoused with another staffer.

I opted not to go there :P

@TimStone Which is exactly what one of the staffers said when asked to go pick up a domain controller in Ghana.

Damnit

@Yuuki I didn't know @TimStone was your home run derby pitcher, good choice.

9:38 PM
It's still a really interesting and cool story.
And of course, it wouldn't be complete without some high-level executive (chairmen still count as high-level executives, right?) trying to downplay how much management bungled everything and made the disaster possible.
> The security revamp was green-lit and budgeted. But its success was never made a so-called key performance indicator for Maersk’s most senior IT overseers, so implementing it wouldn’t contribute to their bonuses. They never carried the security makeover forward.

@Yuuki clears throat and uses best MBA voice What gets rewarded gets done

10:17 PM
@murgatroid99 yeah i think they forgot a word
@TimStone holy shit
@puzzlepiece87 pretty much this

@TimStone Whoa. Like the whole thing is whoa, but that particular bit is just....a lot

@TimStone i am sad they don't have a pic of the rare lego model and the link is just a generic "lego" tag

Oh, wait, that's rare?

lego is awesome but sometimes super crappy about the availability of certain sets

10:27 PM
@TimStone ooooh that is cool
is that your private collection or a rando from google?

It's mine, lol

user15026
Well aren't you fancy with your rare Lego

i vote next bridge meetup is at @TimStone's house so we can all see the fancy rare lego

Oh wow yeah the price on this thing is crazy
I did not pay nearly that much for it >_>
@GodEmperorDune And my Mass Effect gun collection, and...I have a problem 🤔

user15026
@TimStone a very cool problem!

10:32 PM
@TimStone hell yeah

I am still very angry/relieved Project TriForce went out of business without telling anyone and I could not get the remaining items
Mostly angry because they have like $120 of my money 🤔

user15026
Oh boo :( no way to get that back?

Since it was so long ago I don't think the credit card company would authorize a chargeback
I sent them a nasty email but they didn't reply, they literally like ghosted everyone
The Bioware store was nice enough to refund me my money for the preorder made through them though

> Since then, Snabe went on, Maersk has worked not only to improve its cybersecurity but also to make it a “competitive advantage.” Indeed, in the wake of NotPetya, IT staffers say that practically every security feature they’ve asked for has been almost immediately approved. Multifactor authentication has been rolled out across the company, along with a long-delayed upgrade to Windows 10.
very "can't get fooled again"

10:56 PM
#BREAKING A federal judge has enjoined the @CityofSanDiego from criminalizing living in cars. The city has 30 days to comply with court order which blocks enforcement of vehicle habitation city ordinance through ticketing and vehicle impounding. Huge win for @DisabilityCA

user15026
@Unionhawk So this means you can live in your car, yes?

Yes (or other class of vehicle like RVs)

user15026
That's a good change.

This is stopping a city ordinance that would have gone into effect banning such things

user15026
11:12 PM
Goooooood stuff.

11:44 PM
@Unionhawk hell yeah
@Unionhawk san diego and OC are real jerks about this stuff

Hamilton County next?
