This is definitely not a main site question, but, I was watching the Lost in Space reboot.
Without giving too much away, we saw some very rapid freezing of water at one point.
Are there any conceivable conditions of temperature, chemical composition, and so forth where that could actually happen?
I’m thinking supercooling might do it.
The water would have to be very pure, but if that were the case, it could be melted by the heat of the ship, and then conduction to the air and surrounding ice could supercool it…maybe.
But I’d expect gradual nucleation starting from the surrounding ice or the hull of the ship under such circumstances....
Disturbances (like swimming) should cause rapid crystallization under such circumstances, though....
Possibly there’s some way it could all work out, though.

@Adamant I'm very unhappy with how the "scientific explanation" close reason is used on our stack. I think it should be used against two types of questions: those looking for an explanation of actual real life science, not tied to any work of SF or Fantasy (example: "how do lasers work?") and those asking for speculation, not tied to any work of SF or Fantasy (example: "how would an anti-gravity device work?").
The common theme there is "not tied to any work of SF or Fantasy".
But if any work of SF or Fantasy (WoSFoF) depicts behaviour running counter to current state of technology or even against the known laws of physics, asking about an (in-universe!) explanation should be fine.
On a side note, I proclaim the acronym WoSFoF to mean "Work of SF or Fantasy" from henceforth.

Q: What does Thanos mean when he says this to Iron Man?

munishThanos says to Iron Man, You are not the only one with the curse of knowledge. Does this imply that Thanos is very knowledgeable as well like Iron Man? I didn't quite get those words of Thanos.

Q: Why didn't Dr. Strange tell Quill about Gamora in advance?

noClueI see a lot of "Why didn't Dr. Strange do this and that?" questions and the justification for some was that Dr. Strange knew it would've failed either way as he saw millions of outcomes, only one of which goes to their favour. He knows that Tony Stark needs to survive for some reason, hence why h...

Q: Is Nebula actually helping Thanos?

Anu7It bothered me so much that just when they were getting the gauntlet off Thanos, Nebula revealed that get that it's emotional outburst and all but she could have waited to reveal this until after the gauntlet was off Thanos' hand ! What she did was a sureshot way of emotionally derailing ...

Q: Were the Wakanda scenes filmed at the same time?

Zip Zap JBlack Panther took place primarily in Wakanda, and the climax/ending of Avengers: Infinity War also took place there. Many of the actors, backgrounds, costumes, CGI, and presumably filming location(s) would be the same for these scenes. It would make sense for Black Panther's production to simpl...

Q: Was there any significance of the order of Infinity stone placed in Gauntlet?

Ankit SharmaIn Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos was able to capture all Infinity stones and placed them in Gauntlet in the order he captured them. But was that order fully random? Or tehre was a reason to capture them like that? As Thanos didn't personally went to earth first and came there in end.

Is there a way to hide questions with certain tags? I'm getting some spoilers for infinity war just from titles of some of the questions.

@Forral click "Edit" next to "Favorite tags" (under the yellow bulletin board on the right side), enter it in "ignored tags"

@Kevin Thanks! I'm going to see it soon but I hated to try and avoid whole site until I could get to the theater.

Q: Why did Thanos do that at the end?

Ethan McCueIn Infinity War, Thanos implies that the reason that he wants to kill half of all life is because life generally grows beyond its means. That is, if too many people are alive, then their will go beyond what their natural resources can comfortably maintain. However, it is clearly stated that once...

Crazy. Apparently in one of the Harry Potter video games, Hagrid's hut is made of stone, not wood. Do these people not care about the basics of book canon?

Q: Identity novel, short story or book series... slower than light space battles, time dilation and boardings, several planets

Prof. FalkenOk. So I read books as a kid, this may have been mid to late 1980s. Definitely before 1993. These details I remember, they might be from the same book or from several: Slower than light space travel with severe time dilation. There were boardings of space ships, but the fighting odds could be v...

Q: Two spacecraft pilots travel at light speed, meet back on Earth in different era due to time dilation

QuentinI've been looking for the name of a sci-fi romance book about space travel but haven't been successful so far.
