12:07 AM
A 7 year old article helped me out today!

@Bob There's a spike at 30, 50, and 70
> Firefox is way better at this than Chrome. I sat next to someone who had nothing but triangles as their tab bar in Chrome. How did they cope?
I cope by using multiple windows once the tab bar fills up to unusability

I just close tabs I'm done with like a normal person
that's about typical for me, unless I'm coding, then double that until I solve the problem I'm currently stumped on

12:30 AM
> I just close tabs I'm done with
What is this "done with", of which you speak?

had a weird thought earlier, you know how gelatine is made from cow bones and isn't halal? well dynamite is also made from gelantine, is that halal? can you get halal gelatine?
and on that note... bedtime

Bob
@FMLCat I'd need about 200 windows

@allquixotic That's about what I have as well.

@Burgi Nitroglycerine perhaps? Not sure about gelatine in TNT
I could be wrong tho!
!!s/TNT/dynamite/

@bertieb That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
@bertieb @Burgi Nitroglycerine perhaps? Not sure about gelatine in dynamite (source)

12:41 AM
@Burgi cows are halal. You mean pigs.
and gelatine's probably made off hooves.
also you're thinking of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelignite

1 hour later…
2:01 AM
Those load times are pretty poor, right?

Bob
2:22 AM
> The Windows operating system includes many system services that provide important functionality. ... These defaults were chosen carefully for each service to balance performance, functionality and security for typical customers.
> We recommend that customers disable the following services and their respective scheduled tasks on Windows Server 2016 with Desktop Experience:

Services:

Xbox Live Auth Manager
Xbox Live Game Save

Scheduled tasks:

\Microsoft\XblGameSave\XblGameSaveTask
\Microsoft\XblGameSave\XblGameSaveTaskLogon
Because their "typical customers" for Windows Server want Xbox Live on it...

Why are they even an option? o.O

Bob
Also that MapsBroker and OneSyncSvc that aren't just installed but are also autostart (and fail, leading to a nice red 2 by default)

Although, I suppose what else are you gonna run an XBL server on?

Bob
@MichaelFrank Sorry, did you say XBL server?

XBL... service?

Bob
2:25 AM
nono, those services are if you want to log in to XBL, and if you want to record gameplay

Bob
just in case you want to play games on your server, y'know

Yea, nah.
So I guess my original comment still stands. Why are they even an option?

Bob
@MichaelFrank because ... reasons
It's weird how SwiftOnSecurity has somehow evolved from a joke account to ... something actually serious and useful

2:49 AM
@Bob, got any cute fox pictures today?

3:19 AM
Ooh urban foxes. Been running into those a lot lately

3:57 AM
On the graphics card shortage... prices are still extremely high, with Radeon Vega cards selling for twice their MSRP, but it looks like limited stock is becoming available. Perhaps Newegg et al. could do what Micro Center is doing and apply discounts on the otherwise highly inflated price when bundled with other PC components?
(there was previously virtually no stock available at all, regardless of price)
Folks looking for midrange NVIDIA GeForce cards (GTX 1050, 1050 Ti, 1060) are less severely impacted, but 1050-class cards are still seeing ~50% markup from MSRP.
Radeon RX cards (both Vega and 500 series) are currently selling at about 200-300% of MSRP.

4:57 AM
@bwDraco darn miners

Bob
5:33 AM
hi

@bwDraco I read that 'Foxes looking for midrange NVIDIA..........', with an image just above.

lol

@bwDraco I think I'm keeping the PXC 550... markedly worse range than the Beats Solo3, but better than the BeoPlay H8 -- only rarely drops out in my usual torture test, pretty much only if I put my hand in front of the Bluetooth cup, but it can handle the wall just fine
comfort is superb, zero ear pain wearing them
ANC is great, and sound quality is great, and durability is great

Congrats.
Well, 10 mW isn't going to give you exactly great range, but it's certainly better than class 2.

yeah, only problem with them is the worse range, but I almost never use them outside the range they're reliable in
the Beats Solo3 must tx at something higher than 10 mW
but the BeoPlay H8 must tx at something lower :P

Bob
5:39 AM
*cough*plantronics*cough*
that reminds me, I still need to get around to doing that range test sometime
it's probably even worse :S
also, was looking for a laptop bag today at officeworks
they had the backbeat pro 2 right next to the solo3, same price o.O
@allquixotic can you grab the FCC ID of your solo3?
@allquixotic @bwDraco PXC550 should be 3 mW: fccid.io/DMOSCBT5
odd.
I can't seem to find the solo3
BackBeats are at 7.66 mW: fccid.io/AL8-SPRO16
I thiiiiink these are the Solo3? fccid.io/COW81000012
2.8 mW
Wait. No.
either 12 mW or 7 mW
so rough guess for range is solo3 > backbeat > pxc
most likely solo3 ~= backbeat assuming they reduced power for the second application to for easier approval
hm, no, they submitted both apps on the same day o.O
hmmmmm the lower power one might be for BLE
in which case BT proper is probably at 12 mW
so, yea. beats @ 12 mW, plantronics @ 7.66 mW, sennheiser @ 3 mW
@allquixotic @bwDraco ^
@allquixotic packaging, or possibly printed on the headphones themselves

6:02 AM
Odd. That's not what the manual says

Bob
but I'm pretty sure I've found the right one
@bwDraco PXC550 manual says "max" 10 mW

Bob
I'd take the FCC certification tests over a vague spec in the manual, tbh
@bwDraco yea, "10 mW (max)"
I suppose the tests could have been conducted differently
I'd hope that at least the numbers are comparable across the FCC database
hmmmmmmmm

Bob
reading the actual test documents it's possible that the 7.66 for the Plantronics is only a calculated max under which a SAR test wasn't required

6:08 AM
need to convert dBm to mW
how to? :S
the absolute peak of the BeoPlay H8 was 2.6 mW

google it? ;p

significantly lower average, and also lower peaks for other frequencies

Bob
@allquixotic calculator I used got 3.2 mW EIRP
depending on modulation mode, peak power
average is much lower
backbeats, section 9, page 61: fccid.io/AL8-SPRO16/Test-Report/…
measured ~7-8.5 dBm
where the beoplay h8 measured ~2-5 dBm
page 36

hm
the backbeats do LL, ANC and decent range, huh?

Bob
solo3 measures 7-10 dBm: fccid.io/BCG-A1914/Test-Report/…
page 20, 21
generally the lower end for the higher (2Mbps) modulation and the higher end for the lower (1Mbps) modulation, I think?
@allquixotic the only real questions are the subjective ones, whether you like the ear cup, sound quality, etc. If you're happy with the PXC550, range and all, then it's probably best to stick with them.
Personally, I found the BB range alright but not great, but that's in a house where the range of everything is terrible, and I don't have the others to do a comparative test. They do beat my matrix2, etc., by far though
going purely by peak output power, it should be solo3 > bb > pxc

6:22 AM
Hello, guys.

user226528
Fun fact: Right now, I am the only user in this room with an avatar that is not an animal.

Wrong!

user226528
@MichaelFrank Why? Isn't your avatar an owl's eye?

Bob
@allquixotic can you find the AF62 (meelec) on the fcc list? I can't :\

user226528
What kind of idiot releases Silverlight for Windows Server on Windows Update? (Hint: Microsoft)

6:25 AM

Bob
... ... ...

Actually, it's that one there.
But, totally not an owl eye.

Bob
uhhhh
@allquixotic is it just me, or do these look suspiciously like the matrix2? fccid.io/Z63-001AONI/Users-Manual/Users-Manual-1580242
Z63 is also the grantee for the AF52, so they're at the very least the OEM for one meelec pair
~2 dBm on the matrix2

@Bob You never played WoW, did you?

Bob
which is somewhat below the beoplay h8
@MichaelFrank played? no. been curious and wiki-dived? yes :P

6:31 AM
Okay, just going through some old screenshots, and turns out we had an Aussie guildie called Elusive, wondered if there was some sort of long lost connection ha

user226528
Hmm... It seem gpupdate did the trick.

user226528
I mustn't lose hope in myself.

Bob
@MichaelFrank ...not that I know of, though come to think of it you're not the first to ask
I need to find this guy :P

Perhaps!

user226528
Does "Accessory Output Bin" look like proper English to you guys?

user226528
6:36 AM
...unless an accessory can have output...

user226528
6:46 AM
Dilemma: Must I forbid deploying printer objects using Print Management snap-in and tell admins to use Group Policy Management only?

user226528
Yes. I absolutely must.

user226528
Someone visited me 'cause he had trouble running Memu on his computer. It turns out he had Windows Defender Application Guard enabled.

Bob
7:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek Adding AusCERT to my feeds was a bad idea :P
There's lke two every hour, and it's scary :(
> ESB-2018.0415 - [RedHat] kernel: Access privileged data - Existing account
> ESB-2018.0416 - [Debian] mailman: Cross-site scripting - Remote with user interaction
> ESB-2018.0417 - [Win][UNIX/Linux][Debian] ruby-omniauth: Access confidential data - Remote/unauthenticated
> ESB-2018.0418 - [UNIX/Linux][Debian] exim4: Execute arbitrary code/commands - Remote/unauthenticated
oof, I should probably check on that last one

user226528
Try adding US-CERT. 😉

Bob
@FleetCommand US-CERT is much quieter, strangely enough
I added them at the same time

@Bob @allquixotic heh, might want to pop into gitter if you want some fresh personal drama ;p

@allquixotic What's the maximum range you've gotten? I got about 120 ft.

@bwDraco about 10-12 ft through a wall

7:14 AM
What kind of wall?

wood

Ah. Drywall is much more forgiving.

Bob
@allquixotic wait, single wall? o.O

user226528
There is something incredibly pleasant about updating a graphics driver on a server computer and not having to restart it.

If it's solid wood several inches thick, it will attenuate the signal heavily.
This isn't common in modern construction, though.
So... have you seen the RGB lighting I've added to my desktop?

user226528
7:30 AM
@bwDraco Show us! 😊

user image
In the dark... it looks really eerie. But that's precisely what I was trying to achieve.

user226528
Why do you call it "RGB lighting"?

Because it can be set to arbitrary colors. It's just configured as #e010ff right now.

cause p lighting sounds like something else.

user226528
Well, until today, I thought "bw" in your username stands for "black and white".

Bob
7:35 AM
@FleetCommand he could call it BGR lighting if he were a little endian

lol

user226528
It sounds like "a little Indian".

user226528
Wasn't that nursery rhyme? Something about ten little Indians?

7:48 AM
@Bob heh, parentals are like "get a new phone" ._.
I kinda wanta op5T
not sure if I should get the base model or the 8gb/128gb version

Bob
@JourneymanGeek wait why?

@Bob my op3 broke again
I mentioned this ;p

Bob
...again?
I must've missed it

Bob
when was this?

7:52 AM
yesterday!
Ash accidentally bounced on it ._.

Bob
O_O

yesterday, by Journeyman Geek
.... my phone screen broke again.

Bob
I totally skimmed past that :P

Bob
8:14 AM
@allquixotic @bwDraco measured. S7E to BB Pro 2, ~35m is where the first few stutters happen (once every ~10m but stabilises if I stop walking), ~60-65m is where it becomes unlistenable, ~65-70m is where it more or less drops (the audio stream, not the BT signal).
That's in a Wi-Fi heavy area (down the street in front of houses) and almost line-of-sight (sitting on a brick wall but slightly blocked by a couple of shrubs).
Comparison, inside the house through a doorway and down a hallway around brick walls is like 10m to first stuttering and prety bad at 15-20m ... and just about drops outside the metal screen doors (of course).
But that comparison is with the desktop. I should try with my phone indoors sometime.
Now we just need @allquixotic to do an open field test of the Beats ones :P

8:31 AM
@Bob erf. The place I nearly ordered a phone from dies nor deliver...

Bob
8:58 AM
o.O
@JourneymanGeek sure you want the OP again? :P

Ya
Lol. It was a good phone!
I was gonna wait for a 6
I'll put a case on it
Otherwise I donno. I don't want a Samsung
Moto?
Would likely still be a downgrade

How do I Elon Musk

Or wipe my mom's old xiomi 1s...

Oh funny enough my Bluetooth has more range than my WiFi

11:36 AM
last night my girlfriend wanted to play limbo because "it looks cute"
she played until the first spider, screamed and threw the controller at me

Lol
Oh, I meant to ask last night, off the back of website-y Wordpress-y stuff; does anyone have a recommendation for a personal website info/portfoilio (maybe one page) type dealie?
I mean Googling reasonable terms throws up a lot of "top 10/15/42 best website themes" (or variations on that)
But a lot of them seem to be aimed at commercial/vlogger/photo portfoilio/etc
I don't have a particular need for one thing in particular - not a pro photographer, not affiliated with any big projects, not looking for work so don't need a CV website - so really it's a vanity thing I guess...

11:51 AM
@bertieb it's kinda super n00bish but Wix isn't bad

@JourneymanGeek Thanks, will take a look :)

Bob
@bertieb blog or just profile?

@Bob Just profile really, I have a WP blog dealie but would like to keep this separate

Bob
ah
jekyll?

cocks eyebrow
(or I would if I could do that)
That looks interesting

Bob
11:55 AM
it does static sites
makes it very easy to host

That looks like it might win the (unannounced) bonus points for being easy to change theme (like Wordpress) on a whim

Bob
idk, I've never used it

mny problem with all these web framework thingys
is.. i setup a site
i come back in 3 months iwth no clue wtf it is
nuke it, start again xD

A: Powerline adapters intermittently prevent device network availability when connected to a switch

harrymcI think you are getting interference on your powerline adapters from the network of your neighbor(s). You should check the electrical network situation as regarding fuse boxes. I assume the transmission power of the router is more than that of the switch, especially as the switch is pushing sign...

I was wtf'ing at this answer before I noticed who it was

12:35 PM
@djsmiley2k heh

he nuked his answer

12:51 PM
heh
he almost had a point but then it went off the rails some how

1:02 PM
powerline interference will not take out your whole network

you'd hope not

If a USB hdd is giving me clicking sounds when I first plug it in, it probably means that I should take a backup immediately, right?

u should have a backup anyway

ddrescue to the... rescue?

@bertieb whazzatdo

@rahuldottech Does its best to read a potentially damaged drive- reads everything it can without errors first, then retries sectors which caused problems

@bertieb I just use GetDataBack, but thanks :)

Can also resume partial rescues if they were done with a logfile
> Price $79
Fair enough :P

@bertieb I... may have not paid
Someone else did

1:36 PM
Heh, I'm not going to judge

Someone who might be a stranger from the other side of the world

ddrescue has saved my buns on a number of occasions tho, wouldn't leave home try to recover data without it

@bertieb Well, I would've paid if (i) I had money, (ii) I wasn't a minor and was allowed a PayPal
@bertieb I'll take a look at it
Also, testdisk is supposed to be awesome

first u ddrescue, tehn you run testdisk on the image

@rahuldottech None of my business, and I'm not going to judge anyway :P

1:38 PM
testdisk is for a diff situation
