12:04 AM
@FMLCat afaik that only applies within the uk?
@FMLCat huh, never knew/noticed that

12:25 AM
@JonasStein not really - I'm pretty sure even the crowd here is unlikely to have tape drives lying around.
Is it under support?

1:16 AM
@bwDraco I'm wearing my PXC 550s!

So, what do you think?

1:28 AM
Sound quality, ANC, touch controls?

@Bob Actually, the opposite :-P
Sorta
In the UK it's license fee/tax funded and hence they're not allowed to display ads, outside the UK it's not

Bob
@FMLCat o.O
I sit corrected

I'm not correcting you, I'm correcting myself.
Basically I am/was talking shite

@JonasStein I'd say that question should stay on Server Fault. It's server equipment – LTO drives are almost never encountered in a home environment.
Also, where did you find that Hewlett Packard Enterprise makes all LTO-6 drives and that all other brands of LTO-6 drives are simply rebranded HPE devices?

1:54 AM
@bwDraco Will take me a few days to develop informed opinions, but so far the ANC is good, touch controls take some getting used to, and sound quality is what I expected
AVRCP flat volumes are working on the Windows 10 slow ring (not on v1709)

2:24 AM
@bwDraco I got this information from two vendors. I believe that it is true, because HP seems to develop software and documentation actively.
You can compare marketplace.hpe.com/… from HPE with the Tandberg model. They even have the same housing.
I was told they just differ in support, add-ons and housing, which makes sense to me, if the drives are standardized.
@bwDraco it-zoom.de/dv-dialog/e/hp-laesst-oem-kunden-den-vortritt-4440 this German article writes that Quantum and Tandberg are OEM partners of HP.

is it HP, or HPE/DXC?

Has anyone ever seen a phenomenon when the current from a battery actually goes up the longer you short circuit it for? (or other load, but short circuit is the quickest and biggest load I've tried)

And not even just by a small amount, I'm talking about starting off at 2A then going up to 8A after 10 seconds and maybe 60A after 20-30 seconds
After 30 seconds or 60A the cables get too hot to hold so I dunno how much higher/longer it'd go for. Oh and it smells a bit of hydrogen at that point. And the resting voltage also ends up 1-2v higher after I disconnected the short circuit
It's like short circuiting it is doing the equivalent of charging it :-/

1 hour later…
5:35 AM
what's the voltage?
also why are you short circuting?

@FMLCat Is the battery cold?
Under heavy load, a cold battery will have trouble supplying high current, but its internal resistance will cause it to heat up, which increases its current output capability.
Also, what's the chemistry of the battery?

6:10 AM
So... a bit of a PC enthusiast thing - how many of you use a vertical taskbar?
For me, it looks weird, really weird.
What about multiple rows, top, or other nonstandard taskbar setups?

I don't
I autohide

Why autohide on a 4K display?

cause I don't need it all the time

6:54 AM
@bwDraco ditto
I don't autohide either; I operate the taskbar with factory default settings except for removing the Task View, Search Bar widgets on Windows 10
and I run start10 for the start menu replacement
but layout wise, I don't touch the taskbar
oh... I disable window grouping and use the thinner taskbar that shows the window titles instead of icons (not sure if that's the default on W10 or what)

Bob
7:42 AM
Mine is small icons, only collapse when full, autohide
basically Vista defaults + autohide
never got used to icons only (7+)
@FMLCat probably the heat makes the chemistry more active (and lower resistance)
@allquixotic still? :P
I find the win10 start menu mostly fine
the search could be better (7 is still best) but otherwise mostly works

@Bob yup :P

> Splashing a bus passenger with mud after driving through a puddle can cost you $165. Oddly enough, splashing a pedestrian with water is OK. It’s the bus and the mud that seem to be most offensive in the eyes of NSW law.

Has there been a rash of bus passenger mud-splashing incidents in NSW?

@SwiftOnSecurity This is Microsoft who called an update "The Fall Creators Update" in order to make it clear that it was different from just the normal Creators Update. Ignoring of course that Fall is different for literally half the world.

@bertieb this is clearly the thin brown line between civilisation and anarchy....

Bob
> Riding a bicycle “furiously or recklessly” is a $66 fine in NSW.

11:12 AM
If you have to draw a -- brown -- line somewhere, it might as well be there!

11:49 AM
@Bob Hmm. A bus passenger not on a bus is no longer a bus passenger, they are a pedestrian. How do you splash a passenger on a bus with mud? Do AU buses have no sides or roof?
@Bob Does the law actually define "furiously or recklessly"?
In the UK we have the possibility for cyclists to be charged with "Causing bodily harm by wanton or furious cycling (maximum 2 years’ imprisonment" but the legislation does not appear to define "wanton or furious driving":
> Offences Against the Person Act 1861
Drivers of carriages injuring persons by furious driving.

Whosoever, having the charge of any carriage or vehicle, shall by wanton or furious driving or racing, or other wilful misconduct, or by wilful neglect, do or cause to be done any bodily harm to any person whatsoever, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and being convicted thereof shall be liable, at the discretion of the court, to be imprisoned for any term not exceeding two years, . . .

@rahuldottech The first one makes most sense - assuming you want to be labelled as a hacker ;)

Ave

No offence, but @ramhound comes off as really a sort of a dick from this meta answer. Even if they had proper and logical reasoning, they could have been less rude about the whole ordeal, and provide a, well, better explanation to someone who is a new user and clearly trying to contribute to the site. meta.superuser.com/questions/12906/…

5:38 PM
Some folks are direct to the point of bluntness, and can appear to be brusque

As long as it falls within the "Be Nice" boundaries

@bertieb I'm not sure if it does

I know what you mean
I guess the usual routes are open
Flag, AASUM (Ask A SU Mod), Meta post, discuss in here for all and sundry to chip in on (:P)
I agree that new users deserve good treatment, especially if they're trying to contribute
@bwDraco Nice :) (I opened a tab to zoom and got confused because I saw 40.. and thought Flickr had lost the image)
Beyond that, it's so someone more diamondy than I to weigh in on :P

5:55 PM
@rahuldottech When I call someone a what you called me, I will agree, I am one of those

FWIW, you seem a bit insensitive to others' feelings. I'd suggest before you post, you read back what you wrote and get an idea of what the other person would think.

I don’t consider someone with over a thousand reputation a new user, someone who has multiple contributions, should know that radical edits are often rejected
12k on SO, 100 questions and 22 answers on SU; makes you an experienced Stackexchange member
When people start a statement with “no offense”, they know what they are saying is offensive, but they do it anyways
If you don’t find me answer to that meta question helpful downvote it. I am not going to explain, in more detail, the reason a radical modification to an answer I wrote was declined.
Offense taken, by the way, calling somebody that word is hurtful. You knew that, hence the reason, you said “no offence”

FWIW The author of a question or answer always has the right to reject edits. And edits should be made to clarify the meaning of a post without changing it. In this case the editor removed the block quotes which indicated the text was copied verbatim from another source. @Ramhound was right to reject the edit.

6:12 PM
If it's instructional source (i.e step by step instruction), does it still need to be quoted verbatim? The information is still there after the edit, and anyone following the source can see where the steps have been paraphrased from.
However, from a readability viewpoint, it makes much more sense to craft the information in a format suitable for our situation, rather than just copy and pasting giant chunks of content from someone else.

@MichaelFrank I've always quoted as per superuser.com/help/referencing. I may occasionally change the formatting (for example adding markdown) to make it more readable but I try not to change the original wording. Theoretically we should not even correct spelling mistakes in cited text, but I do that sometimes.

I was lazy when I submitted the answer, now I am being stubborn, after being called what I was called.

@Ramhound You're always stubborn though. :)

As a donkey I know that

> Do not copy the complete text of external sources; instead, use their words and ideas to support your own. And always give proper credit to the author and site where you found the text, including a direct link to it.

6:18 PM
@Bob I'd considered that, but resistance shouldn't affect the resting voltage with no load (and I thought resistance usually went up with higher temperatures)

First of all the quotation is a source, my own words, was the answer

@Ramhound FWIW The author of the meta question did not come across as rude, just puzzled as to why his edit was rejected.

I quoted a source
I had no problem with the author of the meta question
Only @rahuldottech due to what they called me

@MichaelFrank He did not copy the complete text, which is several pages long and has multiple authors.

@Bob I'd certainly be more annoyed and inconvenienced being covered by mud than plain water. And I'm guessing a bus displaces more of it than a regular vehicle or water pistol

6:21 PM
@DavidPostill Hmmm... I would disagree with that interpretation, but I need to head to work, and fully assume this conversation will be well in the past by the time I get there.

@Ramhound Yeah, that was a bit OTT.
@MichaelFrank Go look at the link. The web page clearly contains a lot more than Ramhound quoted.

I am the type if I have a problem with something you say, I will just come out and say it, and after words I couldn’t careless. But calling me out, and name calling, is just dirty.

@Ramhound what I meant by "no offense" was that I had proper reasoning for saying what I was saying, and it wasn't just for the heck of it
Anyhow, I'm sorry for using that language
@DavidPostill I didn't say Ramhound was wrong in rejecting said edit, just that they came off as hostile
Which is probably the word that I should have used in the first place, I apologise

Meta answer deleted
My reasons for rejecting an edit proposal was hostile. I made it short to avoid that from being said
Yeah, the comment I made, was made after a radical edit proposal and shouldn’t have been made hence the reason I deleted the comment
Any event I am done talking about this. Figured the author, and the person who rejected the edit, should explain their reasons (but it wasn’t just one reason) and was primarily due to the fact it was radical change (which nobody agreed should have been approved) so the drama makes no bloody sense

6:38 PM
hey you know that site i've been bashing my head against? its now live. would it be ok for me to share the URL here and get some technical feedback on it from you guys?

!!shamelessplug, you say

@burgi It has 9 html errors, 4 css errors and 664 css warnings ;)
@Burgi Why are you using full size images on polypipeufh.com/professional? Example: 2,363px × 1,577px (scaled to 261px × 174px). What a waste of my bandwidth :/ Not only that you can see the images loooooaaaaadddddddiiiiiinnnnng
Please fire your minion and hire somebody who knows how to code websites.

7:01 PM
It's a responsive design, and may be viewed on mobile devices with high pixel density. However, he should still be using smaller images. IMO the top image should not be wider than 1440px, and the other images should be limited to 640px or 800px.
Also, consider stripping the Exif metadata from the images.
If you're using stock images, make sure you've acquired them legally.

Yeah, so load appropriately sized images for the display size and type detected. It's not rocket science.

The best way to do this is with separate 1x and 2x images.
I'm not familiar with this technique, though.

@Burgi i like
/professional is super slow tho
also, menu bar on /prof is crappy
also, s/FAQS/FAQ/
Q stands for "Questions"
Alternatively, FAQs

@Burgi NEEDS MORE JPEG
(srsly)

For web, I would recompress images to JPEG quality 90. Even that would dramatically reduce image size. I'd also recommend using progressive JPEG for any images that are displayed as part of a web page.
