> BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
False alarm in Hawaii - emergency alert sent in error.

12:37 AM
yeah that was a few hours ago

1:07 AM
@Bob You mean "if hiring drivers was like hiring programmers", right?

1:48 AM
@allquixotic Wow... Whoopsie!

2 hours later…
Bob
4:12 AM
hi
@bwDraco have you considered an internal hub?

No--and it's a pain in the butt to remove USB 3.0 cables from the 19-pin headers.

I'm already aware.

Bob
I got the one with a case
magnetically attached to the bottom of my case

Hmm... that would not requiring detaching the 3.0 end of the adapter cable which might makes things a bit easier.

Bob
4:27 AM
@bwDraco the idea is you attach it to the native 2.0 header
assuming you have one
then you don't need any 3.0 adapter at all

The only native 2.0 header supports only one port.
What I can do is reuse the existing adapter connection (which does in fact support two ports) and hook it up to this.
The only thing I was doing earlier was testing the native 2.0 header to make sure it wasn't broken, because Corsair Link (for the H100i v2 liquid cooler) would not work on it.
I don't know if this expects both ports on a 2.0 header to be present...
Yeah. This is a really weird board when it comes to the USB headers.
You know what? I have an unused USB 3.1 Gen 2 header on this board.
Bleh. There's no immediate need for this right now.
pcgamer.com/… (careful, a faulty, probably ad-related, script on this site can sometimes cause Firefox to lock up while using insane amounts of memory)

Bob
5:09 AM
@bwDraco what? is it half a header?

@Bob Mechanically, it's a full header, but only one of the two ports is connected. The other has power but no data.

Bob
...wtf

This is a really bizarre design decision, I agree.

Bob
@bwDraco send nzxt an email and ask them?
I can check when I get home but I think it only uses one port

I can't quite tell which is which.
(as in, which one is connected, which one isn't)
Because the Corsair Link cable was supposed to use the pins the motherboard manual said were connected, but it didn't work.
It is supposed to be part of the ROG_EXT header used for this accessory.

Bob
5:36 AM
@bwDraco Weird. What was your board again?

ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Extreme.

Bob
cause mine has the ROG_EXT header which shares pins with the USB 2.0 header
but the USB 2.0 header is also a full 2-port header
:\
@bwDraco Mine is 13 and 14 (USB1314). Yours is 15 (USB15, other one is marked NC).
Looks like the NZXT hub uses both 13 and 14 on mine.
The internal headers that come off it look like they're on 14 -- at least that's the hub that Corsair Link & my front panel ports are connected to.
The external ports (on the hub) are probably on 13 but I don't have anything connected to them right now to check.

9:29 AM
@Bob There actually is Protected Media Path, introduced with Windows Vista.

user226528
!!/wiki Protected Media Path

The Protected Media Path is a set of technologies creating a "Protected Environment," first included in Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system, that is used to enforce digital rights management (or DRM) protections on content. Its subsets are Protected Video Path (PVP) and Protected User Mode Audio (PUMA). Any application that uses Protected Media Path in Windows uses Media Foundation. == Overview == The protected environment in which DRM content is played contains the media components that play DRM content, so the application only needs to provide remote control (play, rewind, pause, and so...

Stop gap

Bob
10:08 AM
@FleetCommand I know - it uses HDCP, which has been bypassed many times.

10:21 AM
:)

Bob
@DavidPostill nice!

@DavidPostill nice!

@Bob 0_0
@DavidPostill I suppose you'll be getting your 100k swag kit some time in 2018 ;p

@JourneymanGeek That's Network wide rep not SU rep ... ;)

10:33 AM
@DavidPostill 86k on SU ;p
I'm PRETTY sure you can hit 14k at your current rate in a year

@JourneymanGeek Yep. Might reach it this year :)

1 hour later…
11:43 AM
Hmm. 40 rep per day average will suffice ...

12:09 PM
a 'few' HNQ then :D
@bertieb so there we have it

...dishwasher fixed?

a bass drum at 10 feet wont harm a hdd
1
A: How many $G$'s would a bass drum at 10 feet away impart on a hard drive?

D. BetchkalI have an answer, but first I want to point out that this is a challenging question for several reasons: For the frequencies of interest we are in the near field, which is commonly defined as distances $d < 2 \lambda = \frac{2 c}{f}$. Even if we consider the main energetic output of the bass d...

Ah! Nice :D

@bertieb also seems to be, yes, how's the floor?

@djsmiley2k Good stuff! Thank you for asking- still early days yet I think. Concrete bit under the cabinets dried fast with a combo of fan heater plus dehumidifier plus newspaper (good news). On the other hand, the builder who put in the kitchen came round yesterday and between us we couldn't find what has leaked (bad news).

12:16 PM
:/
it just appeared overnight?

He also reckons that the floor will need replaced as you correctly suggested; unfortunately because the cabinets are down on top of the floor it's not a half-day job for one, but likely a full day job for two ($expenses++)
Seems to have yeah
I mean the only thing we had overnight was the dishwasher running, but we pulled both that and the washing machine out and both were dry

sigh, it's not really a dupe

Your physics.se Q?

No the original question
I mean it's very very specific
but.... that's a good thing XD

As opposed to close reason → too localised ? :P

12:19 PM
it was closed as a dupe tho, for someone asking about a laptop hdd.

Ah right so it was
I suppose this is a case of 'generic beats specific'
(in the view of the close voters)

12:52 PM
@bertieb doesn't help the questioner tho
infact the only answer on the dupe question that is anyway useful has no upvotes either
0
A: How vibration sensitive are hard disk drives?

vonjdJust to give some intuition it is often said that you should handle a hard drive like a raw egg - and the point is that you can take this literally! According to this article a raw egg should be able to withstand about 20 G without breaking. Most modern hard drives are able to withstand about 60...

is that the end of the runway? :/

Apparently a bird strike
> Pegasus Airlines said the plane "had a runway excursion incident" as it landed at Trabzon.

jeez

1:32 PM
@djsmiley2k lol. just got a HNQ answer :)

good start!"

@DavidPostill How did that...

@Boris_yo Simples 'derp'

1:48 PM
> Hawaii says the alert, which stated repeatedly that it was NOT A DRILL, was a drill.
Technically pushing the wrong button isn't a drill, it's a fuckup

yus
altativenihtpolve facts

@djsmiley2k Yeah but I'm more puzzled by how it went sideways

someone forgot to change the bulb?

Generally runways with abrupt endings have a run-off area with crushable concrete to rapidly arrest overrunning planes. I don't see it in the picture, but it might be there, either way it doesn't work sideways

oh that
I'm guessing one wheel/wing went off, and span the plane round
or just too fast to stop in time

1:51 PM
If it couldn't stop in time it'd been fine if it just went straight forward
You don't swerve sideways down a cliff if you're a pilot who can't stop a plane in time

nod

i was thinking as in it litterally overshot the end

Slightly more context

oh wtf
ok so it didn't go off the end..... i went..... faaaaaaar left
would a tire blow out cause it to surve like that? :/

1:55 PM
I don't think so. Apparently plane tyres blow out quite often with no ill consequences
@Bob <3

@djsmiley2k Derp is what Orc says...

'Orc' ?

Right engine's disappeared, not entirely sure where
That might be it floating in the sea at the bottom

in the sea?
is that it, or a very white rock

Or it could be the wet thing at the top of the cliff.

2:01 PM
the wings do normally have wheels, right?
now i'm questioning myelf!
common elf, I need answers!

@djsmiley2k Wings don't have wheels, but the place under the plane where the wheels attach are fairly close to the wings, usually where they join onto the body

2:16 PM
@FMLCat Please check your facts. The 737-800 undercarriage is attached to the wings.
Can someone please ping @FMLCat and tell him he is wrong? He has ignored me ...

@FMLCat ur wrong :D

@djsmiley2k I know :-(

Bob
2:35 PM
@FMLCat If it was a bird strike... damaged engine and control surfaces? Then again, it was already near the end of the runway, so the engines should've been idling and it should've been slow enough that the wheels would've provided most of the directional control...
weird
pilot panicked?

@Bob We'll never know... unless we can ever find the black boxes
Oh wait they're right there, behind the butthole
Bird strike blows up engine on takeoff... nothing happens

3:14 PM
So last night my temp was 40C :/

@djsmiley2k Hmm.
> 44 °C (111.2 °F) or more – Almost certainly death will occur; however, people have been known to survive up to 46.5 °C (115.7 °F).[17][unreliable medical source?][18]

Normal human body temperature, also known as normothermia or euthermia, is the typical temperature range found in humans. The normal human body temperature range is typically stated as 36.5–37.5 °C (97.7–99.5 °F). Individual body temperature depends upon the age, exertion, infection, sex, time of day, and reproductive status of the subject, the place in the body at which the measurement is made, the subject's state of consciousness (waking, sleeping or sedated), activity level, and emotional state. It is typically maintained within this range by thermoregulation. Human body temperature is of interest...

Q: What's the maximum and minimum temperature a human can survive?

BugsterThis is a question that has been in my mind since I was a kid. I'm not a doctor, nor even a biology student, just a curious person. What is the minimum and maximum temperature a human body can stand without dying or suffering severe consequences (eg. a burn or a freeze)? While at this subject, ho...

> A body temperature of above 40°C is likely to be fatal due to the damage done to enzymes in critical biochemical pathways (e.g. respiratory enzymes).

@djsmiley2k CPU temp? Body temp? Dog temp? Baby temp? Room temp? Shower temp?

body, in ear IR reading
i presume that's how those things work
@FMLCat you've not been around but I'm currently dying

3:25 PM
@djsmiley2k :-o
Of what?

Bob
@djsmiley2k erm... gp?

i'd tempted to say Man flu
as I'm not actually bed bound
@Bob meh?
I'll get the wife to check it again once she's finished making banana bread

3:39 PM
@djsmiley2k If you're actually dying at a rapid pace I'd not wait for banana bread

i don't think it's too rapid

You don't have to be bed bound to die at a rapid pace, you don't have to be bed bound to be hit by a bus for example
You also don't die from man flu
Girl flu or cooties maybe

the bus has to be moving rqapidly to cause death tho
normally

hi
Today is Pongal. Happy Pongal greetings to everyone.

@djsmiley2k Well it wouldn't be being hit by a bus if it just gives you a gentle nudge

3:48 PM
but that happened to me once.

4:03 PM
i'm back down to more normal levels now, 38.9C

38+ is a fever...

Ave
@DavidPostill lol
ofc it's a turkish plane

@MichaelFrank nod
i mean im not about to drop dead

4:40 PM
Updated my kernel a few days ago, and just updated my BIOS now. Is this now the most protected I can get?
(Meltdown/Spectre related)

Ave
@MichaelFrank which tool is that?

@MichaelFrank great; I rebooted my server to fix meltdown/spectre and apparently it fixed exactly nothing

@allquixotic Well, before I update both, I was red across the board. At least now I have some mitigation.

Bob
@MichaelFrank spectre patches will take a while to get in, iirc

4:53 PM
are you on Ubuntu?

@Bob You're up... early AND/OR late!
@allquixotic Arch variant.

Bob
@MichaelFrank so... are you early? :P

Definitely early here for me... zzzz
But there's football on, so I must be awake!

Bob
@MichaelFrank ...I miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight be watching the CS:GO major right now :P

I'd say that's a valid reason to be up!

Ave
5:00 PM
here we go.
@MichaelFrank which variant?

@Ave Antergos

Ave
ah
I'm on base arch
if you don't have pain setting up an OS it's not worth using :weSmart:

gentoo4lyfe

I love how azure still didn't patch any of the issues

lul

Bob
5:07 PM
@MichaelFrank It started with "I'll just take a peek and then go sleep" but... well...

Ok, I'm back with the same question about cable dropping connection. I have alll my info and access to my admin pages on the routers. Can someone help track down which logs to look at to show the network dropping connection every 1-3 minutes is on the cable side?

5:23 PM
well, firstly it's a case of what do the routers actually show you?
If your ISP hands you a IP via DHCP, you maybe able to see in the log where it changes
(I've missed the previous convo on this, which is why questions on the main site are good ;))

@djsmiley2k Not sure what to ask on main, other than "My VPN drops connection every 1-3 minutes and reconnects."
How do I figure out what is causing it and fix it?

VPN to where firstly?

omg, please tell me that clippyt thing is a room feature......

yes LOL

@djsmiley2k That's private!

5:25 PM
@MichaelFrank I can help, or I can respect privacy :P
Most vpn clients will write out a local log, possibly with turning on of some kind of debug mode

@djsmiley2k My work laptop uses a Cisco VPN with symantec VIP access pin control.

K, and your work can't tell you why it's dropping you?

But all my devices drop intermittently. Makes streaming almost unusable.

Ok, so not just the VPN?

No, the VPN is just the most visible, because I get the "reconnecting" notification when it happens.

5:26 PM
k
So on the router, what kind of logs does it have?

One log, with the following items:
Attempted access to blocked sites and services
Connections to the Web-based interface of this Gateway
Gateway operation (startup, get time etc)
Known DoS attacks and Port Scans
Port Forwarding / Port Triggering
Turn off wireless signal by schedule

gateway operation would be what you're looking at then i think

Netgear Gateway C7000v2 wiht 2.4 and 5ghz bands.
Just tons of UPnP set events, get external IP

nothing there to show your internet dropping...

Yeah, I know. My old router had an upstream error all the time, but I don't remember what it was and this one doesn't show it. Not sure I like the logs on this one.

5:33 PM
hmmmmmmmmm
some tests to do would be to run a ping test from a computer just to the router for awhile (at least until you see the connection 'drop') to see if the router itself is going offline
and then try the same with some external address (I suggest using googles dns server - 8.8.8.8)
so ping -t 192.168.0.1 then wait til your net drops out
if the ping fails, then the router or connection to it locally, is messing up
if it stays up, then it's maybe further upstream having issues.

hrm. ok. I might have to connect the work laptop to see when the VPN drops and chek and see if the ping interrupts at same time.

<kbd>ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>c</kbd> to stop the ping btw

yup, that I know :)
hang on, getting work laptop connected
ok, vpn connected. I'll see f the pings interrupt when it drops/reconnects
huh. I have an interview for manager, application development. That's good news.
and of course today it's staying steady. :|

=D
is this something that always happened?
or started occuring recently?

been happening off and on for a couple years. Cable has been out to the house to check connections, found nothing.

5:47 PM
:/

I'm tempted to put my old router back and look at those logs. I know there was something on that one. For being a brand new higher end all in one, the logs on this suck.

Not near an industrial estate are you ?
yup, that's mostly the apple way these days,
don't tell the user anything, because they don't need to know lol

@djsmiley2k mmm...not industrial, but there is a water processing plant within 2 miles.

orly.
clean water?
or waste?
I'm just wondering if it's REIN....

@djsmiley2k hang on, I'm checking to see exactly what it is.

5:50 PM
interference basically
I'm at network admin
a lot of our client sites are in stupid places, such as on industrial estates.... and so we see issues when something isn't shielded properly
it's a royal pita to locate too

hrm. Might be a generating station.

if it's a clean water site, and if they use HV for O3 generation.... then that could cause it

@djsmiley2k It's a generating station, not a treatment station.

Pumping station?
yea.... could be that :/
especially if the cable runs anywhere near there
tho.... you'd expect other customers to have the same issue (maybe they do?)

No, not a pumping station. Power generation plant to supplement peak loads.

5:54 PM
ah
Does your router give you any stats on Signal to Noise ratio
attenuation etc

don't think so, let me look.

is it a modem and router, or do you have a seperate modem~?

It has an event log, but it's somewhat sparse.
It's a combined unit.

this will be a load of connection figures, not the type of thing it'd put in a log
in maybe connection details or something like that

> 2018-1-6, 14:03:12 Notice (6) WiFi Interface [wl0] set to Channel 11 (Side-Band Channel:N/A) - Reason:INTERFERENCE
Like that?

6:00 PM
says it should be under 'cable connection' ?

That's on the basic tab, doesn't show anything but status.

is the status just 'connected' and nothing else? :/

The basic welcome page shows "Good" for connection status. The cable connection page shows all the bonded channels.

hey

6:06 PM
Ican only really advise going back tyo your ISP then
sup @Burgi

its fracking freezing out there

so i've heard
I've not properly left the house in 3 days

@Burgi What are you talking about? It's 68 degrees F already today.

No idea what temp that is XD
Google is telling me it's 4C there atm @Burgi

20C.

6:09 PM
It's 3C here! :P

@djsmiley2k Bah, that's not even freezing yet.

/me checks on @DavidPostill's tmeps too

I've run cross country workouts in -10C. :)

@FMLCat has it best of all, at 7C
/me recalls that america has a mountain rage stopping the kind of arctic winds the UK gets happening there
so while it maybe colder there, it's nastier here ;)

I Found some more statistic on the router. I'm going to play with it and see what I can find. Thanks for the help this AM (Or whatever time it is where you are) guys.

6:11 PM
6:11pm

ok, +7 hrs from me. That puts you right at 0 UTC
So...UK or on that line. cool.

@djsmiley2k 4C is about right but there is a nasty wind chill

nod
i saw there was new snow warnings for most of scotland, which then turned into the media screaming snowmageddon etc.

we were in bakewell for my girlfriend's birthday yesterday and it was so cold we did actual shopping just to get out of the wind
we went and looked at hideous furniture just because the shop had an open fire

6:42 PM
:O
when we were in iceland, we ended up going into al sorts of random shops
there was one shop where teh guy had no finger tips, i presume because of frost bite
I don't even
wtf is this tv show 'Atari Codebreaker'

7:01 PM
@djsmiley2k Hahahaha.
> In each episode, Martin Cole welcomes three contestants to a brand-new series labelled as TV’s most scientific quiz show.

The objective of the game is to break the code and get to the vault, containing 15,000 dollars of cash as well as other prizes. Before doing this, the contestants are asked to go through a science quiz using a fun and interactive board.

Looks like I got a spear phishing attempt...

i just solved the first question faster than he read it out xD

You can play online :)

Links to goo.gl/H3QDyC and goo.gl/u6iyMd; used the name of one of my professors and was addressed to me by name.
Oddly, I could not find any analytics data for either link, with the service saying that neither link was found.

where do those links go tho?

7:08 PM
@bwDraco Perhaps they have already been taken down?

@DavidPostill That's what I'm thinking.
@djsmiley2k I don't have a secure environment to test on.

Heh.
I no longer have the email message in question.

Both links disabled. I checked them on virustotal first :)

@DavidPostill just trying that now

7:14 PM
Still have it on my tablet, just a moment...

it has some amusing bugs

This is the first time somebody has sent me a spear phishing email FWIW.

infact, why do email clients even enable links anymore -_-

@DavidPostill, an excellent answer in Apply registry tweak to newly created users, I definitely appreciate the info!

@Run5k Thanks :)

8:11 PM
Hello,

A number of serious security vulnerabilities affecting multiple CPU architectures were recently disclosed by Google's Project Zero team as outlined in our blog post[1]. In order to address the disclosed vulnerabilities, the physical hardware on which your Linode resides will need to undergo maintenance. This is the first of several separate maintenances that will be necessary to fully mitigate these vulnerabilities. This maintenance specifically patches the Meltdown vulnerability; the Spectre vulnerability will be addressed in a future maintenance cycle. We will inform you of these

8:27 PM
you're running on azure tho.
/me shrugs

@Ave That script was handy, huh?

Ave
@MichaelFrank yup
at <i don't want flags> (nsfw text) we take security very seriously

lol

Ave
(this is how we picked that name btw (nsfw text again) -- the thing she sent thrice was her ssh key)

Dunno about your work but we're allowed fucks at mine
Fucking is perfectly safe at my work
I mean err
!!s/dying, y/DYING!, y/

8:42 PM
@FMLCat That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

@FMLCat Does your work provide free condoms then?

user226528
Oh, hell. I came here at the wrong time. Later, guys.

Ave
@FMLCat I simply don't want to risk flags.

@FleetCommand lol
Be careful guys and gals. We are all walking a fine line here ...

user226528
@DavidPostill lol indeed. Walking into a room and catching the mighty and prim David Postill using the word C****m doesn't happen every day.

user226528
8:57 PM
And @Ave, you look dashing today... ;)

Ave
@FleetCommand thanks
just commissioned this yesterday
