@Bob Lol, so everyone but AMD?

Bob
@FMLCat Well, Spectre affects AMD too, sooooo
Meltdown was the Intel-only (?) one

Bob
@FMLCat outdated

@Bob :-(
In my defence, I'm a cat, not a security professional.

Bob
@FMLCat amd.com/en/corporate/speculative-execution variant 1 and 2 are to be patched by AMD
those are "Spectre"
Meltdown being "variant 3"
gah, my remote desktop is broken
and I have no idea why

12:12 AM
I think Spectre is mitigated on Windows/Intel at least, but still not on Ubuntu

Bob
why does my remote desktop not work o.O
let's see... enabled (by group policy)
firewall rules enabled (by group policy)
ping (ICMP-in) works

Stopped working suddenly or never worked?

Bob
12:34 AM
@FMLCat the former
looks like it was a stale DNS entry on the RD gateway
ugh

Ah still never figured out, used, or needed a gateway

Bob
@FMLCat useful when you have half a dozen computers behind NAT. and when you don't want to directly expose the RDP service to the internet. and especially when you need everything to go through 443 cause firewalls.
this is part of my test network anyway, so I'm not gonna go buy one IP per machine

@Bob This is why I have my OpenVPN SSL VPN on port 443 :-P
(Basically all of the above reasons combined)

Bob
@FMLCat ya, but that would require an OpenVPN client :P

are you back in civilisation now?

9:40 AM
no
one more day here, 3 days in cbe, then back home on the 19th/20th

hey @JourneymanGeek

oh, hello

hi everyone :)
just doing the rounds :)

just got back from madurai - visited 3 temples, and woke up at about 4.30 local time (which is fine! 7 SGT)

user226528
Wow. ServerFault could be a goofy place too. Look at this review: serverfault.com/review/suggested-edits/353708 Someone has rejected my edit with the reason "Don't remove the blockquote", not realizing that I replaced the whole thing with my own up-to-date research.

user226528
9:44 AM
A moderator too! 😱

don't replace the whole thing then ;p

user226528
Stress on the ;p part

still looks like it was a quote
you didn't handwrite it all

consider "adjusted registry entries to fix typos"

there's so much weather here in New York City ...
I really love weather ...
especially Manhattan weather ...
it's a holiday here today

user226528
9:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek Are you saying I repost the edit request?

Martin Luther King Day

@FleetCommand and/or consider better edit reasons
@Burgi I have about 1gb of data a day
which is enough, I exceeded it once ;p

I'm watching the weather channel ... it's like thrilling ...

user226528
@JourneymanGeek How does this one look? serverfault.com/review/suggested-edits/353846

threw it a approval

user226528
10:06 AM
Huh? You can?

nice :)

I have aboooot 6k there

10:07 AM
hahaha ...
nice @JourneymanGeek :)

(was my second site until the big meta push)

I see ...

I don't do much fun semi pro or pro server stuff at the moment so not really condusive for answering stuff

user226528
Have any of you guys seen the list of changes in .NET Framework 4.7.1? It is so large, I wonder why didn't they call it .NET Framework 4.8.

10:10 AM
@FleetCommand cause... IIRC new major .net versions come with new major OS versions (and someone will likely correct me otherwise)

to get something to work i've had to disable a hardening measure on one of our webservers and i wondering what the consequences could be. am i best off asking on Server Fault on [infosec.se]?

hm
what sorta measure?
I'd personally go with SF

user226528

> Restrict outgoing SMTP to root, exim, and mailman (FKA SMTP Tweak)

ahh
ya, probably SF

user226528
10:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek Also, 4.7 to 4.8 is still counted as minor. Now, 4.x to 5.0 is major.

erm
maybe
@Burgi ya, feels more SF/oppish, than hard security

user226528
Of course, some people might expect a jump from 4.x to 5 to also mean an upgrade to the CLR.

righto, lets hope they aren't as grumpy as they usually are

user226528
But that was not the case with the jump to 3.0.

10:16 AM
thanks for the advice

@Burgi they seem to like my beardy mug ;p
Even got a deleted question merged so I didn't lose a ton of rep

@JourneymanGeek who doesn't like a cute fluffy thing like you?

woof!
Apparently HR!

Q: Disabling FKA SMTP Tweak, what are the consequences?

BurgiI was testing web application on the server it is meant to be finally deployed to and it was having issues sending emails. The error messages I was receiving lead me to this answer. When I disabled the option "FKA SMTP Tweak" in WHM the emails started working as expected. What I want to know is...

@Burgi lol we were discussing yesterday
all a bit odd

i suspect they didn't have enough speed to go around?

@Burgi hm - I have a partial answer, though geekthis.net/post/exim-process-mail-script would polish it up
buuuuut
I don't get any of that enough to post it in an answer ._.
actually no, that's to get mails.
@Burgi more or less, it lets only specific accounts send mails
so, you'd need to get your webapp to send mail through exim (not sure how) or sanely whitelist sending emails somehow

10:54 AM
@JourneymanGeek concider reopening superuser.com/questions/1285226/…
as... it is different
I only point it out as you're named as someone whjo closed in first place :P

ah seems so

i think that was in my reopen queue and i rejected it as it is just a terrible question

ehh. the closereason is suspect I guess

the bass drum bit can be pretty much 'any instrument' I think
because 2hz?
or was it 2khz, i can't remember now
> The authors found the natural frequency of the hard drive they considered to be ~2.3 - 2.5 kHz, much higher than the frequencies of bass drums. And, significantly, the farthest away they were able to cause damage to the hard drive was at 0.7 m by a sound at 9.1 kHz.

Also, homeless cat is now slightly less homeless.

2:19 PM
yay

Bob
yay!

back to teathering off my my mom's phone today, till I get home

Bob
@allquixotic mic arrived
it's going alright - just a bit awkward positioning it so it doesn't block anything :P

;p
well, I DID use to use a SM57 before I got the wireless washing machine tumble simulator....

Bob
@JourneymanGeek sooooo how'd you position it? :P

2:27 PM
with a mic stand, and my monitors are elevated ;p
the cabling was clunky tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm using one of those mic arms that clamps onto the desk
but the monitors are like 5cm above desk level sooo
I suppose I could raise them

ahh
I used a proper mic stand ._.
I actually need a new DAW, driver support on my current ones are shit.
but ugh, low low low on priorities. Its mostly for mom anyway

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that'd still stick an arm in front of the monitor, no?

Bob
I got this thing ebay.com.au/itm/…
@JourneymanGeek what, above, below, to the side?

2:32 PM
its kinda on top of a little tripod thing!
Wait a few days!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek oh, so not a floor stand?
just a little desk stand?

no, its a little table top one

Bob
yea, this came with one, but that'd be even worse positioning
the arm works better :P
^ the included stand

that would be a pain to mount on a 'standard' mic stand

Bob
@JourneymanGeek since when I was known for patience? :P
@JourneymanGeek how so? there's a standard screw mount hole in the base of the mic itself

2:35 PM
ya, but angle!
The Shure SM57 is a low-impedance, cardioid, dynamic microphone made by Shure Incorporated and commonly used in live sound reinforcement and studio recording. It is one of the best-selling microphones in the world. It is used extensively in amplified music and has been used by every U.S. president since its introduction in 1965. In 2004, honoring its four decades of "solid, dependable performance", it was inducted into the first-ever TEC Awards TECnology Hall of Fame. == Background == The origin of SM57 may be traced to 1937, when Shure engineer Ben Bauer developed the first single-elemen...
this is mine
that fits into a thing that screws into the stand

Bob
@JourneymanGeek no? in cardioid mode it listens from the front, not the tip

is the style I was thinking
actually slightly lower profile than mine I think

Bob
@JourneymanGeek i.imgur.com/sNtbPkL.jpg
pretty standard mount and works just fine :P

yaaa... that's a wee bit unweldy
maybe overhead? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek oh, positioned for the photo
@JourneymanGeek I'd need a rather bigger (floor) stand to get it overhead

2:42 PM
ah

Bob
the biggest problem is rotating it to minimise keyboard clackiness :P

(mental note. When I get my own place. Overhead hanging mic. ;p)

Bob
at least it doesn't catch breathing like the headset mic did
@JourneymanGeek also overhead is difficult because ... monitor too tall -_-
@JourneymanGeek the stand also came with a holder for mics like yours
it screws in to the same screw :P

2:54 PM
Hi
Sometimes, my desktop pc doesn't start properly.
Though it powers on, no display...
sometimes I tries to remove and re insert RAM, sometimes mother board cell and don't know the exact reason who cause the solution
It doesn't happen always. I use my pc everyday for 3-4 hours
And surprisingly sometimes I found that issue while restarting, I mean pc started properly, in order to switch the os, when I restarts, I sometimes face the same situation... power on but no display.
The common working solution I find is power off for several minutes and theb start
I am here to know the reason for such problem.

sounds like a question for the main site
anything in the start up logs?
does your BIOS allow for boot logging?

@Burgi I always get this reply when I discuss something here!
@Burgi how do I check?

thats because you phrase your questions as if you are posting on the main site! ;)
reboot the machine and hit F10, F8 or DEL (depends on your motherboard) to enter the BIOS and have a check through there

Yes, I am currently in the bios settings
There is one option Advance > Event Log Configuration
Event logging is enabled
I can see event logs by "view event logs"

anything freaky or odd listed in there?

3:09 PM

o_O

lol

@djsmiley2k ?
@Burgi is this what you're talking about?

yeah
is your clock set right?

yes.

3:15 PM
so its failing after the BIOS then

The cmos battry failure ans time not set logs might be due to removing and reinstalling motherboard cell in pasts.
@Burgi no, when I face that situation, I can't even see the bios. (nothing displayed on monitor).

ah
have you swapped out to a different PSU?

I could take that screenshot becuse presently my pc was just working

and surprisingly when I pressed exit from bios, I again faced that situation, Now, I've to wait sometimes to have a working pc! Haha
@Burgi no, I haven't replaced smps or something related.

3:20 PM
it sounds like a failing PSU

Oh. Ok

this might sound weird but do you have a PC speaker attached to your motherboard?

No

i mean one of those little piezo-electric beeper things

well, yes, I sometimes hear the sound when thermal problem. But I normally don't hear one beep that other pcs usually makes on startup

3:24 PM
ok, just checking

I just checked with removing the RAM at all and I heard 3 beeps
so, Yes, beeper are attached

ok good :)
its probably a PSU issue then
what wattage is your current one?

Ah. I currently can't check; not displaying anything.
Leaving now...
Bye
Thanks for giving your time and suggestions @Burgi

3:52 PM
lkml.org server was shut down due to power failure and was stuck waiting for a password, lol

Q: Is Windows silently uninstalling unused programs?

SylverdragThere are a quite a few programs I need to use only a few times a year. And regularly, when the time comes, the program I need is nowhere to be found and I have to reinstall it. At first , I assumed I just forgot to install the programs on this computer, but over time, the issue keeps reoccur...

wait wait wait
is this really real?!
it explains something i saw at work with putty disappearing

So. We just found out all our main sites return X-Robots-Tag none on their headers. Because "security".

but I presumed that was my computer being stupid

!!doge secure, anonymous, invisible

      wow
           much secure
                          such anonymous
so invisible

3:59 PM
> Yes, Windows 10 may remove any of your programs without asking you.
!!wat

yeah but no upvotes, i'm kinda skeptical

> It will only remove programs when updating to a new major version, but it will remove anything it wants starting with small programs and ending with major things like Intel Rapid Storage RAID drivers or USB drivers.
@djsmiley2k Yeah, [citations needed]

4:09 PM
@Pandya no worries
Win10 nuked my startmenu at home the other day but all the apps are still there

4:24 PM
I've had that too
but putty was actually completely gone

Ave
@djsmiley2k putty on gentoo?

nah, windows 10 at work

Ave
smh

@Burgi respond with fire and fury!

4:30 PM
@Burgi you've not moaned about work for like 2 days! what's going on!!

@Pandya and yet you never learn.
@djsmiley2k he's got a sexy ass smoking hot blonde minion

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
the receptionist? XD

@djsmiley2k it was the weekend?

pffft
they didn't call you or something?
also i've been ill, i feel like it's been months since i left the house XD

nope
i was away for my GF's birthday

4:40 PM
ah nice
oh yeah, frozen in bakewell, now i remember!

wtf is going on with my localhost recently?

wehrom?

Bob
bakewell sounds like the next intel microarchitecture

I may make myself homeless again in a month though
@Bob Nah that'll be Bakewell Lake
Since they've been dragging on the whole "Lake" series for a dozen generations now with indefinite delays for whatever comes next

Bob
@FMLCat oh yea the wells are done

4:58 PM
Wells have turned into ponds and then lakes, soon they'll be oceans!

ponds?
and then deserts, as the world dries out XD

@FMLCat why?
ugh
i don't remember FF52 ever caching DNS before

hmm
pretty sure it has for awhile
there's a options page you can go into a clear it (same as chrome)

brb

because why not have a browser actually just doing everything

5:03 PM
@FMLCat Rivers. Don't forget the rivers.

soon i can imagine browsers not even using dns natively anymore :/
springs?, streams? tributaries?

except for the price.
and likelyhood that 'any' password will work

@djsmiley2k I don't get the "password" part.

and ability to upgrade
and cost of adaptors which are needed because you only have a single usb c port
and...

5:14 PM
> everything
except:
- games
- productivity (e.g. Word)
- coding
- watching some video (e.g. iTunes)
- voice chat programs (e.g. Skype, Discord, Teamspeak)
- serious image/audio/video editing (e.g. Photoshop/GIMP, Cubase/Audacity, Vegas/Premiere)
- music subscription service listening (e.g. Spotify/Amazon Music/iTunes)
- programs supporting your hardware, like UPS info, GPU stats, etc.
- password managers, for improved security (e.g. Enpass, Lastpass, Keepass)
- backup software (Crashplan, Carbonite, etc.)
that's quite a lot of exceptions to the point that "everything" there is patently false, and not even close to true
and quite a few of those things aren't portable and may only be available on one platform

> and quite a few of those things aren't portable and may only be available on one platform
pl

hell, some things that can be done on the web (like listening to music) are simply better on the desktop because you have more customization of the behavior of input (keyboard/mouse) and usually lower screen latency / higher FPS for smoother animations and such

@allquixotic Nah, everything is going to either run in the browser, or as an app. Didn't you get the memo?

and games are horribly inefficient or require some bastardized plugin to run effectively on the web

yeah games
but music??

i listen on youtube lols

MLC NAND is dead, long live MLC NAND!

@djsmiley2k Spotify has a better selection, better playlist management, and doesn't waste bandwidth and resources allocating a space for video when you're just listening to music... I listen to stuff on youtube but only if it happens not to be on Spotify, which is pretty rare
its recommendations are also much better IMO
youtube recommends "popular" music whereas Spotify recommends music I would actually like

(my desktop has a high-end 3D MLC NAND SSD, but these drives are becoming very hard to find and very, very expensive)

its also paid and i have weird tastes that it didnt fill, and its idea of related artists was terrible - granted, i tried it like 10 years ago

5:23 PM
@bwDraco autoplaying video? ads that my browser blocked that take up 3/4 of a page? lovely

@allquixotic youtube reccomds viking rock to me

but on point of the article, wake me up when they break the 2 TB barrier; I could care less about performance as long as it's faster than HDDs... I want capacity

@allquixotic As much as I hate this... the news media industry is dying. Paywalls will soon be the only economically viable option.

I'd take an SSD that's "only" 5x-10x faster than an HDD (in terms of IOPS) but has 8 TB capacity, over an SSD that's ridiculously faster than I'd ever need but only goes up to 512 GB

News just in, most people don't want news.

5:24 PM
@allquixotic Well, TLC has vastly improved over the last few years.
Look at the SanDisk Ultra 3D.

hmmmmm

@allquixotic Just how much storage do you need? I rarely have more than 1 TB of data in online storage.

I have 6Tb in my server
however online I have 100Gb backups

Most of my data is stored in "nearline" storage.
("online" as in "connected and immediately accessible")

the change to my upload speed has made a huge improvement to my backking up \o/
tho that reminds me of a error throw up this morning on logrotation

5:32 PM
You can still find MLC NAND... but it's now mostly limited to the far high end, just below Optane.
In brick-and-mortar stores, MLC NAND SSDs are practically nonexistent.
Everything I could find in the SSD shelves the last time I went to Best Buy is TLC, though some are better than others, like the SanDisk Ultra 3D.
I think Samsung is the only company making high-performance 3D MLC NAND for consumer SSDs...

hmm...

test -x /usr/sbin/run-crons

ping isn't returning the local URL

Q: Russian scientist injects himself 3.5 million-year-old bacteria, says he is now stronger and hasn't gotten ill in 2 years

JimmeryI have found several articles regarding a Russian scientist, Anatoli Brouchkov: Anatoli Brouchkov is a soft-spoken guy with silver hair, and when he lets out a reserved chuckle, his eyes light up like he was belly laughing. If you met him on the street, you'd never guess that he once injecte...

must click to understand

6:43 PM
@djsmiley2k I LOVE THIS
I'M ACTUALLY GONNA BE DANCING ON IT AT AN EVENT SOON

6:55 PM
=)
yis awesome

7:05 PM
@allquixotic quite a few of those things can/are done through the browser by many people tho
except:
- games
More games are played via things like Facebook than locally now!
- productivity (e.g. Word)
Office Online/Google Docs
- coding
VS Online 🤣
- watching some video (e.g. iTunes)
More video is streamed than downloaded now (and iTunes is available on Windows and OSX)
- voice chat programs (e.g. Skype, Discord, Teamspeak)
Lots of those can be done through a browser
- serious image/audio/video editing (e.g. Photoshop/GIMP, Cubase/Audacity, Vegas/Premiere)
Photoshop Online (it sucks but hey its free)
@allquixotic agar.io is Web only, and sucks as an app on Android.
WebGL is pretty damn capable these days
Like that?
I'm kinda still wanting a larger NVME SSD but while things have come a long way since Samsung were the only game in town for anything over 1TB they've still not come far enough

7:25 PM
$2k for that drive in CAD!
That's expensive but also sexy! Other than the speed, compared to the 9x0 series

Yeah over £1000 here. But then compared to four 1TB drives it's not overpriced

7:38 PM
True...
I got a file server with 4x 2TB REDs in it... I may demote that to a backup server and get a few SSDs on a faster board... Hmm...

@FMLCat There's a performance overhead though (varies depending on how the engine was coded) and that's compared to OpenGL, which compared to Vulkan/DX12 is pretty inefficient and can't create as complicated of a scene due to the fairly low limit on the number of draw calls
now, WebVulkan would be cool to see some benchmarks on

8:05 PM
@FMLCat Gaming through a browser?! rainway.io

8:15 PM
@MichaelFrank lul
it's the new improved phantom console!
