As for me, I've never had to worry about overheating because my motherboard has an M.2 heatsink, beneath which my Samsung SSD 960 PRO is installed.

@bwDraco apparetly only works on systems with a spare x16 port and the ability to split lanes on the port

Yeah, no PLX switch on the card. It's meant for HEDT systems with PCIe bifurcation anyway.
That means either Intel X299 (with Skylake-X) or AMD X399.
You said you were planning to build a Threadripper system?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek how's the trip?
@bwDraco every time I see amd's new model numbers...

@Bob at a family function at the moment ;p
having proper internet is nice
tho lack of working smartphone twitch
I mean, I could run the jelly but...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek :(

and lol
I was going to wait for a op6, so this does need to get fixed

1:44 AM
I feel you. Remember what happened when my Nexus 5X stopped working?

1 hour later…

I think someone is trying to hack into my Instagram account
> It seems like you're having trouble logging into Instagram. We can help you get back into your account.

Haha Instagram's address is 1 Hacker Way...

Is the reset link in the email legitimate?
If so, then Instagram has detected repeated failed login attempts. If not, you have a phishing email.

3:53 AM
k, reverted from the latest Windows Insider build back to v1709, and now I can't start Windows Defender, nor can I install Bitdefender

5:07 AM
@allquixotic uhhhh yea, insiders on prod isn't the ... best of ideas :P
@allquixotic do you have backups?
3
or you could try doing an upgrade install to 1709 on top of the existing one

Bob
5:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek hm?
hm. I think I'm gonna wait for S9 release (Note9?) before trying to update my phone again. looks like the root process changed again... at least if I brick it then, I can switch to a new phone. win!

Can't type on tiny phone :p
On the jelly. Everything is timy

@bwDraco That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

@Bob fixed with a reboot \o/

@bwDraco that's the wall paper on my spare smartphone

TIL the "power saver" power plan makes Windows very aggressive with core parking:
Windows practically shuts down the entire second CCX (and possibly more) under near-idle conditions.

I think my next computer is going to have an AMD CPU.

O.o

user226528
Totally not getting it.

NOD32 is kind of annoying with it's untrusted certificate warnings...

user226528
12:07 PM
I did hate its firewall even more.

huarghgg
so opened up the dishwasher again
found the base was flooded
the pump wasn't on properly from me cleaning it out yesterday D:

user226528
Ew! Been there.

wasn't too bad
the antiflood thing kicked it and turned the machine off
so sorted that now, running it again and it's actually running for once!, so hopefully it'll drain properly too
atm we've just got the drainage pipe going into the sink lol

I do all the washing by hands...
And sometimes it's good meditation.
But sometimes it's annoying.

nod
wife hates washing up
but also is really anal about it, and anyone who doesn't do it right just gets her raging

user226528
12:17 PM
Can't do washing by hand. It's never clean enough.

user226528
Don't know why.

@FleetCommand Have you tried adding 50ml of elbow grease?

use hotter water

When something does not come off I get angry and add 100ml of elbow grease.
Hulk adds 10L of elbow grease when angry.

lol

user226528
12:21 PM
It doesn't do any good if I end up ripping what I only intend to wash.

uargh
got drainage water in my ear (don't ask!)

user226528
Ew! Definitely didn't intend to.

sooooooooooooo the offical documetnation for our dishwasher says the errors we were getting were due to 'high water level' -- wonderful how it didn't tell us it also meant the base was flooded.
it's draining! \o/ it's not gone wrong!
hmmmmmmmmmmm
it went wrong -_-
but maybe because the sink is too high up

I'm trying to find a relationship between a four-digit hex number and a file. Is there any kind of program that'd try different things automatically?

I'm not sure what youre even asking

Its probably a silly question.

What sort of relationship?

I'm guessing that the number might be a checksum of the file, or an ID that is stored in the file.
It might not be though.

Start from the beginning- where did you get the number, and where did you get the file?

user226528
1:58 PM
Checksums can be easily checked using a tool called MultiHasher

It probably won't help, but they are level files from a video game, and the numbers are used as filenames
I used this (gchq.github.io/CyberChef) to generate a bunch of hashes, but it didn't help

user226528
Holy... That web app is absolutely smashin'.

There may or may not be a relationship between the filenames and their content

user226528
If only it supported OS integration, I'd have put MultiHasher aside.

The filenames may be mapped to ids stored elsewhere

2:00 PM
Yeah, Its very likely.

@Hiccup GCHQ?

That's what it says :P
It'd also be interesting to know if there was a program that could interpret a string as many different dates formats, so you could pick out ones which could be correct. example situation you know the date is in 2017, but you don't know the date format.

like 2017-01-02
and you don't know if ithat's 2nd of jan, or 1st of feb?

like its a really obscure date format, but probably a known one, and you have no idea how to interpret it, but you know its probably from a certain year

2:40 PM
i feel like i've used a tool that did that
you gave it a string and it gave you the possible conversions

hmmm
how do you convert a drum's impact, into g-forces :/

@djsmiley2k For the purposes of scientific research? Designing a robot? Getting your neighbour served an ASBO?

Q: How susceptible are spinning disks to vibrations?

StuI have a man cave that has to hold all my toys, so my large collection of computers with spinning hard drives is about 10 feet from my drum set. The drum set is largely idle, but my kid is now old enough to start playing, and I fear for my spinners. Are the tolerances of joe WD blue hard drives ...

Ah hmm
Ask that Q on physics.SE, follow-up question about interaction of g-forces with sensitive motor/readhead on electronics.SE; then finally post an answer?

6:52 PM
It'd take 13.5Kg of force, over 2ms
welp, I asked on physics ;D

7:36 PM

I'm starting to get tired of the USB 3.0 to 2.0 adapter. The sleeving on the 3.0 side is loose and the soldering quality isn't the best. I had to detach the 2.0 end a bit earlier to test the (only) USB 2.0 header on the motherboard, which serves only a single port. (At least I've verified that it operates.)
It does look like that as long as I don't manipulate it too much, it should hold up for the life of the system.

Is this the one you've got?

Yeah.

Is it not just connected to a case port? why is it getting manipulated at all?

7:46 PM
Just some cable routing work.
It works now and AFAICT none of the wiring is damaged in any meaningful way but this leaves me a bit concerned.

just don't touch it
you seem to be in that common thing that people get with new toys, where they keep prodding it

8:08 PM
that's my only advice, and don't get whatever illness this is !
