Goodbye Ping bot, nice meeting you

hahahaha
@ArtOfCode I was thinking about that apicache you made
Does anything use that currently?

2:54 AM
Well it's not running AFAIK, so no

oh ok
Well I was thinking about how SmokeDetector and the SO bots all have such a similar workflow
They get something to scan, they post it to one or more rooms, and they make an API call or two to comment or flag

Yup
That's what it was designed for, but for various reasons nothing uses it

What if we had several central servers (to leverage the separate API quota) that abstracts the post retrieval and chat room logic out entirely? Bots can subscribe to types of new posts, and when a new post or comment comes in an HTTP request is dispatched to each bot. The scanning could become an AWS lambda

I doubt we'll ever do this but it would be cool.

3:07 AM
Would be
Wouldn't need to be centralized, though - we could instead maintain a client-side library that encapsulates Smokey's "see all the posts" logic, then gives you the posts to do whatever with.

A central server gives a few advantages tho
language agnostic, and everyone would get our doubled API quota * number of servers
also I think it would cut down on hosting hassles since parts of it become serverless

it'd be interesting to to the math on Lambda filter cost viability

the findspam part of each bot that is
@Undo only other trouble is commands would get slower
That affects us the most
Bonus round: squish Helios in for notifications
AND generalize Metasmoke/Sentinel to provide a web dashboard for all the posts caught by the bots (menu to pick which bot perhaps)
going mad with power over here
AND add tea brewing capabilites to all bots by default
!!/tea

@quartata brews a cup of passionfruit tea for @quartata

parallelized tea brewing
@Undo The real math to do is to count the number of unique posts scanned by all the bots
See how many separate IPs we need to serve the bots's quota needs

3 seems like a good number

@quartata We don't need to go creating IPs just to get quota. It'd be better to ask for a quota increase than to get it artificially.

for redundancy purposes too

@SmokeDetector n

Maybe we should talk to the SOBotics folks a bit about this too, they may have different usecases

3:20 AM
!!/tea

@WELZ brews a cup of earl grey tea for @WELZ

Oh, I like the fact that it mentions "type of tea" (I hate that actual tea)

18 hours ago, by angussidney
@iBug our website deploy failed because the Travis container ran out of disk space

@Undo We could also use a Heroku web dyno aside fron Lambdas
Free web dynos fall asleep after 30 minutes of inactivity, although such a long length of inactivity is pretty unlikely. Maybe there's a way to lower that

@Undo some thoughts on what a bot's config looks like
the response from the scanner would be stored in a DB as the report data
Oh I forgot the room config. That would be like NG's pretty much
And a section for secrets. Chat credentials, access token ...
I doubt any bots would use protobuf but if we did the protos could be in a file with the same name as the bot

hey tripleee
Do you pronounce your name "trip lee" or "triple e" when saying it out loud, btw?

tripleée
This is easier to pronounce :)

@Magisch triple eee (obviously!)

So eeeeeeeee?

@tripleee cause in my head when I read it it sounds out trip lee every time :p

on another site I had an avatar which looked like e^e^e so this is all very confused mathematically

8:47 AM
I just think 'trip'

@tripleee e^(e²)

\o/ I now have a bot running mostly successfully

@Glorfindel I think there's an error in that regex, ?!< means "not < here"
which is weird because I thought we discussed that syntax when you made the fix

I'm pretty sure it worked on regex101 ...
