Among the tricks I've been fiddling around with are the GPU overclocking tools. The same tools used to enhance performance can be used to limit power consumption, by reducing power target (on NVIDIA cards) or power limit (on AMD cards). Some games respond better to this than others; Assassin's Creed Origins suffers from some stuttering on a reduced power target but the dynamic resolution feature helps keep performance stable.

Doing some more tuning...

At a 45% power target (126W), the performance is really unstable. In Assassin's Creed Origins, I have to use the FPS limiter to get consistent frame delivery. 50% power target (140W) is much better behaved, probably because the GPU isn't being run that far below the optimal performance-per-watt point. (The memory consumes a significant portion of the power budget, especially at 12 Gbps, and is set to run slower to give more power to the GPU core.)

For reference, the EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 Elite is specified for a 280W total board power, with power target control ranging from 44.6% (125W) to 117.9% (330W). The memory on this card is Micron's new 12 Gbps GDDR5X. (All values assume default VBIOS.)

Sadly, memory speed control can only drop it down to 11 Gbps; speeds in the ballpark of 8-9 Gbps would be perfect for operation at lower power targets, especially given how wide the memory interface is on the GTX 1080 Ti.

So... your thoughts on GPU power control for more efficient gaming?

What I can say is that it's probably performing like a regular GTX 1080 at 50% power target—but the GTX 1080 runs at 180W, not 140W.

A high-end graphics card with more CUDA cores has its benefits in power efficiency, as long as you know how to tune it.
