Another highly-upvoted non-answer from the depths of time.

A: Why did Douglas Adams pick 42 as the ultimate answer?

Samuel Herzog Narrator: There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened. ac...

It was even admitted to be not a real answer by the poster within seconds of posting.
please don't vote on this one, since its no real answer, but on this topic, how to not joke? ;) — Samuel Herzog Jan 12 '11 at 14:10
Also, from the answer: “I prefer not the test the other theory, therefore I refuse to answer your question.

@Randal'Thor so how should I go forward with my story ID answer? I feel bad about getting votes for an accepted answer (people often up vote the accepted answer, I think) that is not the correct answer.
I'm fine with my answer being accepted, since it did help the OP the most, even though it isn't the correct answer.
Should I take it to meta?
I was hoping to solve this without doing that.
Ah, I see @Kevin is here. Do you have an opinion about this, @Kevin?

12:19 PM
Cool, 17k on the dot.
@SQB edit your answer to point towards the other answer as well, maybe?

SQB
@Mithrandir well, that's basically what I did (be it without an actual link), but that has been removed twice now.

I don't see what the problem is. If the OP refuses to follow site standards and accept the correct answer, that's not your fault.
No need to do anything.

Accepting is, and always has been, the OP's choice.

SQB
Well, I'm fine with that. And they accepted the answer that helped them the most. What I'd like to do — and did, twice, but it was removed, twice — is adding a bit of information about how my answer isn't the correct answer, even though it has been accepted, and point to the correct (self-)answer.

Yes I guess meta is the place to work out Valorum's reasoning. I understand his point about answer consistency, but fail to see anything wrong with a simple "This is not the correct answer. See the self-answer." amendment.

I guess so. Will do later when I have the time.

@Edlothiad yup, I've never been one with tons of rep

I might have the 20k on the dot, 10k on the dot and 3k on the dot screen shots somewhere too, but they may all be lies, lemme check.
@Mithrandir More about on the dot ;)

SQB
Asked on meta. We'll see.

@SQB Leave it in a comment, putting in an answer is the wrong place to put it

SQB
@Edlothiad I disagree with that, since comments are non-permanent.
I'll add that to the question.

1:17 PM
I added a comment to the question making it clear AFAIR

New series. New Doctor. New look! #DoctorWho

yes, it was
but it was more useful ;P

I dunno yours has all the same information mine does, doesn't seem more useful to me.
I didn't read all of it properly though, got bored after "Welcome"

1:27 PM
No, yours just has 'any more details? here's a link' while mine actually included some specific stuff to include in the answer, plus actually welcomed to feel friendlier
links are good, but they should never be the only information blah blah blah ;)

There not toddlers, we don't need to ruffle their hair and stroke their backs. Short an to the point. Gave him a link, if he's really going to bother editing he'll open the link anyways. No point fluffing it up with a bunch of bull****. He sees what he needs to see and that's all he needs to see.

a welcoming impression can make all the difference

I've welcomed 1800 users, I know which ones stay and which ones don't (officially welcomed)

also.... there no toddlers, but what about here? *runs away*

@TimE.Lord I don't know how I'd react to this..

1:32 PM
Those long winded messages, much lower fix rate then the ones that are clear and to the point.

@Edlothiad I disagree. With my experience, the longer and warmer ones make a better impression than the ones that get short comments. Especially the rate of thanks for the welcome, I'll stick around is larger to longer comments, in my experience.
(some of this experience is from Lit, some here)

You do you, I'll do me. If you feel like wiping my bum when you walk past, feel free to.

I'll pass on wiping your bum, thanks for the offer
@Edlothiad (unregistered users are much less likely to stick around than registered users in any case)

Q: Which murdered king was mentioned in Tywin's history lesson?

ColeIn episode 3 of season 4, there is a chilling scene with Tywin, Cersei, and Tywin gives a history lesson and talks about the three rulers that lacked wisdom. They were Baelor who was holy, the last was Robert who was strong, but the second one he mentions I am unfamiliar with. His name was ei...

Q: Can I add a note to my own incorrect story ID answer, explaining why it is incorrect?

SQBBackground Over a year ago, a story ID request was asked, about a lone man manning some sort of space station. I answered it, and even though my guess wasn't the actual story the querant was looking for, it helped them enough to figure it out themselves. Which is great! They accepted not their ...

Q: How did Tony Stark know that Peter Parker is Spider-Man?

PlexusIn Captain America: Civil War we see Peter Parker come home to see Tony Stark chating with his aunt. Later he tells Peter that he knows he's Spider-Man, and that he wants to recruit him. How does Tony Stark know that Peter Parker is Spider-Man?

3:03 PM
Oof, @FuzzyBoots, I was on mobile and didn't see your answer here until I posted my own :/ I added the quote to yours, though, to make it better. scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/173777/…
Yes, I see the time difference. Such is the annoyance of mobile.
I was searching through the book for that Ironwood quote...

@Loong Hello :)

3:27 PM
@xkcd I might need context for this one :(

@amflare amazing :D

4:06 PM
@Mithrandir No worries at all. I considered looking for the ironwood myself. I know one of the books actually had an index in the back (I want to say it was the one with the female with the "great ass", maybe Golem in the Gears?)

I don't know, I've only got the first three in a boxed set :)
so I had to manually search through it

I have PDF copies. The Visual Guide to Xanth has some nice bits too, but yours works just fine.

Heh, those make it easier :P

@Donald.McLean: The circuit breaker trips when ironing in one room? Is that with everything else off or unplugged?

@DrRDizzle Saw that one up on Facebook, complete with people posting comparison Mork images. Which then led to Robin Williams-related sadness...

4:33 PM
Hah... it is Golem in the Gears. Emjay and her Ass were compiling a Lexicon.

@Tango Unfortunately, there's pretty much no way to turn off/unplug everything in that room. But we're talking about a radio alarm clock, CFL lights, and a cordless phone, none of which are significant contributors.

@Donald.McLean That's kind of unsettling - that shouldn't be happening.

@Tango Yeah, no kidding. And that's exactly what we've been telling the electrical contractor.

@Donald.McLean And what does he say?
You might consider discussing it with the county inspectors.

@Tango Nothing that means anything.
They did change the circuit breaker to a 20 amp version, but it still trips.

4:38 PM
@Donald.McLean I can understand - he doesn't want to go in and pull wires out of walls or run more through there.
@Donald.McLean It trips a 20 amp? Did you verify what gauge wiring is on that circuit?

@Tango That is something that I don't know and am not sure if I can find out.

@Donald.McLean Most residential wiring is done in 14 gauge, which is rated at 15 amps. For 20 amps, it should be 12 gauge. I don't know about your area, but around here I've found building inspectors can be quite helpful - but that could create paperwork issues and so on. But it sounds like the electrician is being lazy and not doing it safely.

@Tango My concern too. My house burning down due to faulty wiring would really s... be not good.

@Donald.McLean Yeah, I'd see if there's an authority you can appeal to that would force him to fix it without them making you leave until it's fixed. What you're talking about is not drawing anywhere near 15 amps of current, much less 20.
