you can just checkout origin/master and it'll put it in a detached head

Hmm, I need to make a symbolic link that'll work on Windows...
@Andy you're on windows, right? can you test something for me?

What do you need? I'm not on windows right now, but I can test later

testing a nasty bit of ctypes code
        import ctypes

        kdll = ctypes.windll.LoadLibrary("kernel32.dll")
        kdll.CreateSymbolicLinkA(os.path.realpath("hooks/pre_commit"), os.path.realpath(".git/hooks/pre_commit"), 0)

What's this do?

it's for making a symbolic link
You can't commit a git hook to a repo since it's in .git

I understand that :) What's it do to my file system?

2:43 AM
so I'm having smokedetector link it over

...ya know that's only gonna work on Windows, right?

@Andy Nothing if you're not in a Git repo. You can just make an empty file hooks/pre_commit
@ArtOfCode yes, which is why I have a check
if not os.path.isfile(".git/hooks/pre_commit"):
    if "windows" in platform.platform().lower():
        import ctypes

        kdll = ctypes.windll.LoadLibrary("kernel32.dll")
        kdll.CreateSymbolicLinkA(os.path.realpath("hooks/pre_commit"), os.path.realpath(".git/hooks/pre_commit"), 0)
    else:
        from sh import ln

        ln("-s", os.path.realpath("hooks/pre_commit"), os.path.realpath(".git/hooks/pre_commit"))
full code

hooooow about let's use some code that works on both instead of more platform-based branching

There's no way

because that's a very good way to break things

2:44 AM
No cross platform way to do something as simple as a symbolic link

then let's use another method

if I copy it over it won't update if I push a change

Ok. Let me try again: What does this do to the directory structure on my file system? I want to know exactly what and why I am creating symbolic links. I also want to know that they are properly removed

if you have a file hooks/pre_commit
it makes a symbolic link to it under .git/hooks/pre_commit
assuming all folders exist
that's all I wanted to test

Yeah, I'm with Art on this. I don't like this.

2:48 AM
What end result are you trying to achieve?

I have a pre-commit hook to check if you're committing on deploy
and warn you
that's it

uh
@quartata
os.symlink

don't think it works on windows

someone test it?

although that's better than sh.ln for Unix :P

2:50 AM
@ArtOfCode Doesn't work on Windows

okay

actually
> Changed in version 3.2: Added support for Windows 6.0 (Vista) symbolic links.
I guess they changed that
so I'll use that
although I'm not sure this hook will work on Windows anyways
Since it's got a shebang
> By default, Git for Windows executes hook scripts using its own Windows port of the bash shell.
nevermind then, sweeeet

@quartata Why couldn't this be in metasmoke (or the serverless structure when we finally build that) and just immediately revert commits to deploy that don't exist in master?

1. reverting them means either a reset (dangerous) or a revert (creates an additional commit and ruins deploy history) 2. a commit on deploy will also cause local problems which MS can't fix

We can force the tree to be however we want, looooong before it gets through CI

Reverting still messes up history, and a reset will be impossible if say the commit was a merge commit

3:33 AM
Not a revert

Also I'm a fan of fixing the root problem

PATCH /repos/:owner/:repo/git/refs/:ref
{
  "sha": "aa218f56b14c9653891f9e74264a383fa43fefbd",
  "force": true
}

That's a reset.

Set the deploy ref to whatever the last commit is. That'd be done long before CI is finished and instances try to deploy
It's definitely possible. We pass it a SHA. We know what the last good one was.
(sorry, I'm on a bizarre connection. Expect lag)

Git commits only have partial ordering -- there are two "last" commits after a merge
Also really dangerous.

3:36 AM
Doesn't matter. This isn't git reset --hard HEAD~1
This is "set the deploy branch to the tip of master"
Which is pretty unambiguous.

Reset to a specific commit, that specific commit being the last one pushed to master

git branch -f deploy <sha-currently-on-master>
is basically what's done through the API
git branch -f deploy master might also work, dunno.

And if someone rebases master onto deploy?
Say, in a pull gone wrong?

Brain is having a hard time with that one

I'd argue that this is less invasive and gives better feedback than what youre proposing if that's your concern
Also doesn't fix the local change on deploy which would make Smokey go beserk

3:39 AM
Maybe, but it also has to run code and add complexity (and OS branching)
Ultimately, we have no issues failing over to some other instance if a single one is messed up. We do have issues when GitHub gets messed up, which is probably where we should focus efforts.

@Undo If someone fetched a branch and then rebased it onto deploy there's a chance the commits would have different SHAs and then make deploy and master histories not match

@quartata They don't have to. We're grabbing the deploy ref and slamming it down onto whatever SHA we want.
Specifically, the tip of master

hmm my example doesn't work actually

Honestly, I'd want to do what you're suggesting if Git didn't have this commit hook limitation.
I understand why it's there, but it's irritating

Hmm?

3:45 AM
As is, it would force us to do a bunch of work and playing with the directory structure on the fly on people's machines. Not awesome.
@quartata Not being able to just add a commit hook to the repo.

Oh, the link

PigeonRecent studies show that 72% of programmers that work with Javascript, jQuery, or some other library related to the JS programming language think bagels are a great source of nutrients. We should all eat bagels today and have a nice chat + have a cup of tea or two

Ooh, how about this: commit made on deploy, person realizes their mistake and cherry picks it onto master and pushes both
If the hook is a problem I can remove it. It's not the main point

3:52 AM
@quartata MS (or whatever) sees deploy commit not on master; sets SHA to tip of master (which is the cherry-picked-in commit)

Which does not revert it. That may or may not be desired.

Why?
If it needs reverted, we're in a clean state and it can be reverted on the master branch

4:00 AM
@quartata that would be... bad
you would not only have to mistakenly commit to deploy to do this, you would also have to mistakenly merge or rebase or whatever your mistaken commit onto master
people with git privs are sometimes dumb enough to do the former
doing the latter would be... rather unlikely

Which can happen, but should be rareish

If the hook is too invasive, I can make a makeshift lock by starting an empty rebase and pausing it
Then abort it when we're finished

what

(interactive rebase)

that sounds... just as breakable
let's use recognized APIs for things rather than hacks, where possible
Hacks are fun, we probably all know that, but they also break far too easily :P

4:09 AM
@ArtOfCode The most recognized API is the pre-commit hook -- this is what it was for. It will stop changes at a local level which is really what wr want

yeah, the pre-commit hook I'm on board with
the symlinks less so

Stopping pushing those commits to deploy is just a nice bonus.
I can copy the hook over, but it'll have to be done again if ever changed
