Q: How can I make portable Windows XP/7/8.1/10 flash drive?

AtanasI have 64 GB 3.0 flash drive I just bought for any purposes First I wanna try to make NOT BOOTABLE, but PORTABLE flash drive. When I plug it into any PC, it opens directly Windows, without any installation. And when removing the flash drive, the PC will not has Windows again. Is there a way to do...

> NOT BOOTABLE (...) it opens directly Windows without any installation
I want an animal, NOT A CAT but it needs four paws, fur, a tail, whiskers, cat ears, must make a meowing sound...

It sounds like they want a windows liveUSB, except plugging it in causes the machine to immediately switch into windows and it can't be booted from or something.
Which I think means what they actually want is a USB stick with a portable installation of VirtualBox and a windows VMDK~

@JourneymanGeek - I didn't think I had to explain to a member who has been around for 6.5 years that asking for links to learning material/standards is a big ask.
If I am wrong about that I can retract my close vote.

@Ramhound More the comment

IEEE 802.11ay is a proposed enhancement to the current technical standards for wireless networks. It's the follow-up of 802.11ad adding four times the bandwidth and adding MIMO up to 4 streams. == Technical details == 802.11ay is a type of WLAN in the IEEE 802.11 set of WLANs. It will have a frequency of 60 GHz, a transmission rate of 20–40 Gbit/s and an extended transmission distance of 300–500 meters. It has also been noted that it is likely to have mechanisms for channel bonding and MU-MIMO technologies. It is expected to be released in 2017. 802.11ay will not be a new type of WLAN in the IEEE...
TIL wireless network technology is outstripping consumer (and even datacenter!) Ethernet.
> Where 802.11ad uses a maximum of 2.16 GHz bandwidth, 802.11ay bonds four of those channels together for a maximum bandwidth of 8.64 GHz. MIMO is also added with a maximum of 4 streams. The link-rate per stream is 44Gbit/s, with four streams this goes up to 176Gbit/s. Higher order modulation is also added, probably up to 256-QAM.

Wow, that's impressive

How in Oblivion are we going to be able to take advantage of this without widespread adoption of 10GbE (and possibly 40GbE) in consumer applications?
Aquantia is bringing 10GbE to consumer networking hardware but we still don't have that many consumer 10GbE switches.

But don't higher frequencies have major reception issues past walls etc?

yup
essentially these are super short range

5:48 AM
> an extended transmission distance of 300–500 meters
Probably beamforming and high power transmission.

That's probably a theoretical max in perfect conditions

Look, 802.11ad can already do >1 Gbps in real-world conditions. Now you have 16x the bandwidth from bonding four channels and four spatial streams.
Even 10GbE cannot support this sort of data rate.
Then again, $1000+ routers are probably going to be involved and 10GbE becomes a non-problem in this price range.
Realistically? I'd expect 3-10 Gbps.
Night.

@bwDraco we won't, until every device is online, acting as part of a mesh network
and then, super short distance, non-wall penetrating wifi becomes a non-issue
Also, how much are they going to pump up the power, before we start cooking things?
I mean, I know once you hit microwave wavelengths stuff starts cooking
but does it happen at lower too?

Firefox sync currently assumes the sync server is transient.
It's free to move sync storage to a new server (very very rare) and it expects clients to reupload data if that happens.
There's plans to properly transfer data across during moves, but that's not done yet IIRC.
*shrug* I run my own sync server so that's never been an issue for me. Actually, the issue for me is a lot of deleted data is ... never deleted. Bookmarks get tombstoned for a while.

@Bob Yup - I've had my share of Sync server trouble. (I run my own Sync server, too.)

Bob
IIRC one of the data loss conditions is if the server loses data, and all clients are reset at the same time.

3:08 PM
Yup.

Bob
@bwDraco The part about assuming it's transient has nothing to do with sync server trouble.
It's just how accounts are managed on Mozilla servers.
And a desire to avoid the complexities of distributed storage, I guess. At least in the early implementations.
Anyway, protip: back up your profile.

Yup.

Bob
RAID The Butt Cloud is not a backup.

@Bob the login details on my work PC, phone and laptop all match. the details on this machine are all missing

@Burgi Is it newly-connected?

3:10 PM
nope

Disconnect the device from Sync, then log in and connect again.

good plan, 1 sec

You might see duplicate devices for a while.

Bob
You could investigate with about-sync github.com/mhammond/aboutsync
It'll tell you what sync data it receives.

Sync typically takes a while for newly-connected devices.

Bob
3:11 PM
Or take a peek at about:sync-log
I'd suggest doing those before dis/reconnecting

@Bob is that 'nix only?

Bob

@Burgi Look at about:sync-log first
that one's built-in, just type it in the address bar

Most of these questions are asking for a software recomendations. Are they worth editing or changing to suit policy here?

FF 55.0.3 is taking ages to perform TLS handshakes, starting from today. Anybody got any ideas/debugging tips?

Bob
@Nick Find a good one (not necessarily the oldest; look for most generic, best answered, or highest voted) to be the dupe target. Don't close as software-rec; they're trivially reformulated as "how do I..."

@Nick And most of them are old questions. Fixing newer ones is OK but don't bump old ones to the front page with edits.

@Bob thanks. But first, I should just reread policy just incase.
SR, SU and SO seem to have natural overlaps.

Bob
3:34 PM
@DavidPostill Start with the network tab in devtools. Try Fiddler and see what it says. Try a different browser.
@DavidPostill Actually try a different browser first, just to make sure.

@Bob @DavidPostill I suggest Vivaldi. It's great but sadly, I still end up opening chrome : ( just like how I end up using windows over ubuntu although I love ubuntu.

Bob
@Nick When I say try a different browser first, I meant something you had handy, like IE/Edge, as part of diagnostics.
Narrow down the scope. Is it affecting just that browser on just that machine? All browsers on that machine? All browsers on that network? etc.

4:03 PM
@Nick No real overlap between SR and SU, they do recommendations and we don't, we do fixing and faultfinding and they don't

4:34 PM
@Bob Chrome seems to be OK.

Bob
@Mokubai It's the somewhat subtle difference between whether the OP cares more about accomplishing a task or more about finding a program that does <things>. People often ask for the latter when they actually want the former - and that's where it makes more sense to edit rather than close.
SR prefers questions where there's a relatively precise set of conditions. Not just "a program that does X" but "a program that does X while satisfying Y, Z"
@DavidPostill ...odd. Is it all sites? Can you grab a timeline via devtools/network?
@DavidPostill F12 for devtools, go to Network tab, make your request, select the request (usually the first in the list), a panel should open on the right, click the Timings tab on that panel.
@DavidPostill I'm about to head to bed, so other things you can try: check if Firefox is attempting to load IPv6 for some reason where Chrome isn't, or vice versa. Check if DNS resolution is the slow bit. Maybe check HTTP/2 (or SPDY) status. Check that they're using the same proxy settings. Install Fiddler and send Firefox through it, and see what happens. Fiddler with Chrome and compare.

@Bob Thanks will play about with things :)
Timings look normal

Bob
@DavidPostill Hm. That's not a particularly long wait, tbh.
Was it still noticeably slow when you loaded that request?

@Bob Yes. I know. I need to log a request which is really slow.

Bob
@DavidPostill I do notice your request for jquery from Google is really slow.
1.5s, and it was cached anyway. So it would've just returned a not-modified header.

4:51 PM
Hmm. Bit it is the TLS request that seems to take the time. I get a popup at the bottom of the page saying waiting for TLS handshake ............ eventually the page loads. I haven't managed to repro it with dev tools open :/

Bob
@DavidPostill ...does it repro if you close devtools again?
@DavidPostill Oh, sudden thought. Firefox could be checking OCSP status.
IIRC Chrome decided to stop checking OCSP at some point. They went completely with embedded CRLs distributed via updates.
Firefox currently uses a mixed model.
So if the OCSP responder is very slow, that could stall the handshake.

@Bob It would appear so.

Bob
If you go to about:preferences#advanced you can disable OCSP checks and compare.

@Bob That's it! Thanks. I wonder why it suddenly went glacial on me?

Bob
@DavidPostill I haven't a clue :P
You could try manually loading the OCSP endpoint and seeing if that takes a while, I guess.
Could be load on the remote end. Could be your ISP filtering those connections (which is incredibly dodgy).

4:57 PM
At least browsing is back to normal speed :)

Bob
Could just be because OCSP isn't exactly the most reliable thing.

@Bob It wouldn't surprise me. EE are well known for causing trouble ...

Bob
@DavidPostill Just keep in mind the risk: if a site revokes a certificate (assumption: they lost private keys) you might continue trusting the revoked cert (assumption: you're being active-MitM'd).
Now, if this active-MitM is on the local end (somewhere between you and ISP) they could block the OCSP connection anyway, and you probably don't have hard-fail enabled. So OCSP doesn't help there.

@Bob Yeah. I'm aware. I'll enable it again if I'm online banking or suchlike.

Bob
If this active-MitM is on the remote end (somewhere between ISP and remote host), OCSP would normally tell you it's revoked. This is the case you affect by turning off OCSP checks.

5:00 PM
@Bob The only thing between me and my ISP is my tethered mobile :)

Bob
@DavidPostill tbh, I don't think it's that big a deal (i.e. not likely at all). If the private key was leaked to the point of needing a revocation, something is already very very wrong.
If you're being active-MitM'd on top of that, well...

@Bob Ack. Thanks for all your help. Enjoy your sleep :)

Bob

@Avery Ow, seriously?

But luckily that's stopped now

7:38 PM
@djsmiley2k Depression and suicide are also side effects of severe acne ...

Increased sensitivity of the skin to UV light (photosensitivity - see warning above).
Increased pigmentation in the skin.

@DavidPostill Eh. Not direct. Acne --> Bullying --> [insert bad things here]

@rahuldottech well, they all made me not get hungry much, they got me nauseous, they destroyed my, well, sexual drive, they made me feel numb (I saw terrible shit but didn't feel like reacting which hurt me a lot) and they did the teeth clenching thing which is real annoying

@rahuldottech Acne -> low self esteem...

@Avery Ow
@djsmiley2k Not for me, but I see how that's totally possible

7:39 PM
@djsmiley2k Yeah, that's what I meant.

Of which I had...

I've gotta say
It's a YMMV thing and the material matters.
I took SNRIs and SSRIs

>Drowsiness.
Dizziness.
Abnormal behaviour, psychotic disorders, eg with delusions or hallucinations, or suicidal feelings or thoughts.
Increased sweating.
Dry throat, hoarseness.

SNRIs were too heavy and I got a ton of nausea
SSRIs caused all that but less nausea

Yikes. I have Asperger syndrome with some social and impulse control issues but never had problems this serious.

7:44 PM
I'm very likely on the spectrum but I'm kinda real scared about getting diagnosed because I can do stuff but legalese is so bad that I'll be treated like I can't do stuff if I get diagnosis
I mean it's causing some issues on school but some leeway (preferably exams in a silent environment and less/no homeworks) would be better than being limited to a completely different class of schools

What exactly? Here in the US, employers must provide reasonable accommodations to disabled persons, including those with autism spectrum disorders.

what do you mean?

I for one have never hesitated to disclose my disability.

I don't live in US

@bwDraco Dude. Not everyone has the privilege of living in country like yours

7:48 PM
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. § 12101) is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. It affords similar protections against discrimination to Americans with disabilities as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which made discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, and other characteristics illegal. In addition, unlike the Civil Rights Act, the ADA also requires covered employers to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities, and imposes accessibility requirements on public accommodations. In 1986, the National...

And you might be coming off as a tad bit insensitive right now

getting diagnosis can cause me to get limited to special education and reduce my employment opportunities

I feel for you.
Sorry.
@Avery Wait a sec. Discrimination by disability is legal in your jurisdiction? That really sucks.

well
dunno if it is, but it'd definitely reduce my opportunities as if employers find it they can really deny my job application
like
they wouldn't blame it on that but like "oh you're also this and I can discriminate you for that legally so there denied for that"

You need to tell your legislators.

7:53 PM
even stuff like discriminating over sexual orientation and gender identity is legal here

That's just plain wrong.

we had been telling for a ton of time but nothing happens really

@Avery They can refuse to hire you simply because you're a girl?!

yes

That is just messed up.
Here in the US, that is grounds for litigation.
Remember, there's a lot you can do. Don't let your disability get in your way.
See you in a bit.

7:58 PM
I just checked and I can't be denied for having a disability but they can say "oh we don't see you fit and it's not due to your disability" and deny, even if it is related to disability.
2

Well, we sometimes see this kind of sneaky discrimination here, too. It's sad.

@bwDraco Well, what happens is they don't outright tell you "we're rejecting you because of your disability / gender / other illegal reason here". They tell you it's because your profile doesn't exactly fit their needs, or "we'll call you", or whatever.
I don't remember if it was on reddit or workplace.us, but a comment with a lot of upvotes said something along the lines of "you don't disclose your disability. You truthfully state if you're able to profesionally perform the requested work. Then, on your first days, you state your disability if it requires some sort of special accomodation.

Well, you don't bring it up on your interview/job application/etc. unless it's a gov't job or they specifically ask for it.
You ultimately want to focus on your strengths.

I've had acquaintances who wouldn't get a job because they were "too black" there were no openings. As soon as they straightened their hair with a hair iron, suddenly the openings appeared.

also dammit, gender dysphoria is listed as disability in turkey, that's absolutely amazing (/s).

8:11 PM
There's also the insidious "good appearance" requirement for most secretary or public facing positions
Which usually means "be a young white woman"

@Avery Soap operas are huge in Brazil. There's this network with a monopoly so immense, virtually everyone watches this channel and their soap operas are so influential it practically can shape our culture, make slangs "catch" and bring subjects into the spotlight

hm?

Which can be a positive thing is some instances, such as in their current soap opera for their most important timeslot
Wait, I'm getting somewhere, I swear

OK

8:17 PM
They have one character who has gender dysphoria and is struggling to transition FtM
And they haven't once painted the character in stereotypical view
They show her (well, now him) as a human being
And all the struggle of trying to understand themselves, and not being understood by society
They introduced the issue very gradually, over months

It's a huge ymmv thing

That's impressive
They're using make good of their influence at least

that seems like a good representation
but, there are those that do fit the stereotype
those that don't but are different from the character you described
wish that was portrayed as well
because even on basic discussion threads you can find very conflicting experiences

We're a very bigoted, homophobic, religious and conservative country.

for both mtf and ftm, and for the enby people

8:20 PM
In entertainment, LGBTQ people are almost universally shown in an humoristic context

ugh yes same here

(I don't know whats enby)

to both messages

LGBT isn't shown here a lot
being illegal and stuff
But the youth... A change is coming

@ThatBrazilianPony it's actually "NB" or "non-binary" but most just call it "enby"

8:22 PM
And the humor is either mocking them, or "oh I am so funny and fabulous and stuff". A bit like "the good negro" trope.

ugh yes

So a realistic, human approach, is a huge improvement.

yeah, that sounds great

Even if they only picked one kind of experience

well, just showing one character is a good starter
hopefully other shows will follow the lead

8:23 PM

Anyone interested in Fornite, who doesn't have Fornite, everyone I play with already got it but I have keys from my own purchase.

@ThatBrazilianPony I'd like to note down that unless explicitly stated, a person who's taking hormone and doing this (not going to copy-paste all that here) is not necessarily someone being a transgender person.

8:33 PM
@Ramhound What's fornite? Sounds like a chemical compound. Or a food. Or both.

@ThatBrazilianPony Sounds like the new synthetic drug on the block

@Avery OK. I am not sure of the nuances between the terms myself.

It is a game by Epic

Also, some people just naturally don't produce enough hormones

@ThatBrazilianPony just tl;dr: unless the person explicitly states it then not assuming that they are that is for the better

8:37 PM
One of the characters of the show is this girl who started taking hormones and dressing in male clothes and starting to grow facial hair and identifies as male and changed her name and pronoun, and wants a breast removal surgery The other, AFAIK, uses make up and dresses as female and uses a female name and sings in a stage (ok, tipically a "drag queen" stereotype)
@Avery Sigh. Human sexuality and gender identity are so complex and confusing.

like I could say that I am quite knowledged in the area and even I hold back from making such assumptions because it can lead to not-good-stuff

And yeah, I know both sexuality and gender identity are different concepts.

basically making a correct assumption would require me to read that person's mind and actually be doing so for 6 months and this and that and obviously I can't do that, so trusting that person's judgement and conclusions (and not assuming them unless stated) is better than drawing my own conclusions.

Well, I will call a person with the name and pronoun they introduce themselves to me, and treat them with respect.
That's just basic decency, actually.

 that's pretty much all you're supposed to do, doing less (not respecting) or more (asking weird questions or making random assumptions) is just going to get it worse.

8:46 PM
Of course, there are occasions where the name / stated gender of a person will differ from the usual physical characteristics of a sex, and I can't help but assume the person isn't cisgender.
However, that's a completely irrelevant assumption.
It literally doesn't matter
And asking or mentioning it would range from awkward to very rude
and wouldn't be none of my business

well

(unless I wanted to engage in sex with said person) :P

to be completely fair, we all draw such mental lines, but I personally don't let it get in the way of my discussions and my respect and stuff and don't discuss about it unless that person requests so.

Yeah, I'm like that. Or at least try to be. That's basic respect, as I said.

@ThatBrazilianPony yes.
