Dear Javascript, Why does toString(99) return "[object Undefined]"?

@ATaco what kind of JavaScript are you using

NodeJS, but it's consistent on Firefox.
It turns out, toString ignores its arguments, as it's supposed to be indexed from another variable.

@ATaco oh. Well you need to call toString with an object so it knows what is "this"
so answer is bind operator
That said toString global is technically not in spec but is a side effect of globals
so think of it as UD and just use Strinng()
No idea why it's undefined and not Global/Window

@Downgoat You said I could use a closure to save lots of bytes, but I do not know how. Any suggestions?

6:45 AM
@ASCII-only Is it worth the regex though?

It saddens me that (13).toString() is valid and expected.

7:06 AM
@Phrancis idk, it shouldn't really add that much overhead
@ATaco ... Why
Should numbers not be printable
Also 13..toString() works too

@ASCII-only And that is so much better
@ASCII-only That's why languages like Lua have a global tostring, because numbers aren't supposed to be indexed.

Uhmm, for markdown in questions/answers, whats the syntax for writing a number "down"? Like, the inverse equivalent of X?

X maybe..?
Yeah, x seems to work.

Ah yeah, that makes alot of sense
More than stuff like sdown sfloor or stuff I tried

super script and sub script

Thank you :)

I'm having trouble translating this sentence

@wizzwizz4 referring to -t and -d

Ah. That makes more sense.

After a bit of thinking:
> A, B, C are derivatives with dental suffix from the root G in the sense H specified under F, along with the ablauting D, E.
@MartinEnder @Dennis maybe you can help me
@wizzwizz4 do you speak German?

@LeakyNun Not much.
That looks right in terms of structure - I don't know the nouns but I think it's right.
Wait... Dennis speaks German? TIL.

@LeakyNun I know a bit of German too, and that seems right.

@MartinEnder thanks
it's too complicated

I had to read it a few times to parse it as well. (although it doesn't help that I don't know what half the words mean)

@MartinEnder half the words?

> A, B, C sind mit ablautendem D, E Ableitungen mit Dentalsuffix von der unter F angegebenen Wurzel G in der Bedeutung H.
you likely don't know only ablautendem and Dentalsuffix...

"angegebenen" "Ableitungen"

@wizzwizz4 oh, those aren't common words?

8:26 AM
@LeakyNun the meaning of "Ableitungen" tends to depend a lot on context, and all the placeholders don't help either. also in terms of semantics I'm pretty sure that "ablautend" and "Dentalsuffix" contain half the content of that sentence :P

@LeakyNun I haven't seen "angegebenen" before and "Ableitungen" doesn't have a lot of meaning.

@MartinEnder well, alright

Wait a tiny bit

There are numerous attempts to connect the difference among the West Germanic, Gothic, and Norse forms; nevertheless, a united Proto-Germanic base form could not be constructed with certainty.

There are words I never encountered so far

What happens when you place an object at the focal point of convergent lens

ok

Do you remember now?
After we had that discussion, I thought about what would happen if the lens had a focal length of 0. I don't really know if f=0 is relevant, because then C would be 1/f, which would be ∞ δ.
Could, in theory, exist a lens with f=0?
Or maybe it is not physically meaningful...

@totallyhuman Hi
@LeakyNun Forget about what I said above. I figured it is a non-sense.

11:20 AM
@isaacg please go to the pyth room.

Do we have a standard for how black-box-functions have to be provided to submissions?

Anonymous
@flawr The advice is usually "don't do that" :P

I have a few challenge ideas that involve the manipulation of functions as black boxes, but that seems to be a bad idea if we do not have a standard way for all those types of languages.
@Mego unfortunately :/

Anonymous
It's one of the cases where golfing languages (and other esolangs) lack features of traditional languages that causes them to be unable to compete

But I think were missing out on so many opportunities. Would it makes sense to restrict those kind of challenges to languages that have functions or functional capabilities?

Anonymous
11:28 AM
It would make sense, but I don't know if it's a good idea to try it or not

Anonymous
Historically, challenges that require languages to have a certain feature or capability have been begrudgingly accepted at best

wait don't some golfing languages support black boxes?
e.g. pyth

Anonymous
@EriktheOutgolfer Some do, others don't

I don't think anybody said, that, but many do not.

Anonymous
I misread "golfing languages" as "esoteric languages"

11:31 AM
well, there are also languages like golfscript or cjam which have "code block" objects
e.g. {)2*} would push a code block which when eval'd will compute (x + 1) * 2
and others have strings, e.g. 05ab1e
so not really sure where is the line between black boxes and strings

What if we make a meta post for defining the input of "black boxes" for each language?
Or perhaps I should just make an easy challenge as a precedence case.

Anonymous
@flawr I think adding black box-focused answers to the default I/O methods post would be better

and then there's jelly which stores "helper links" as named functions (their name is their 1-based line index)

@Mego ah right, forgot about that!
but that would require basically one answer per langauge

@Mego you mean doing i/o with function objects or something?

Anonymous
11:34 AM
@flawr Not necessarily. A lot of the individual methods could be grouped into general methods.

Anonymous
@EriktheOutgolfer Yes

But would it hurt to have a separate thread for functional IO?

but then for example 05ab1e has the .V command which evals a string as 05ab1e code

I think that has a lot more intricacies than just the "usual" IO

so one could say that a string would define an 05ab1e function or something...?

11:41 AM
I don't have any experience in that particular language
@Mego Can you make an example? I have difficulties to word it.

CMC: Given a list of positive integers, output the ones with the highest delta (there will only be one pair with maximum delta)

Oh, why not explicitly listing langauges .

[1, 3, 5, 9, 2, 17] -> deltas: [2,2,4,-7,15] -> [2, 17]

I think allowing stuff such as strings or code blocks as functions is just fine, as long as the code doesn't attempt to process it but just runs it. Really, you can also get the source of function objects in JS, get the machine code of functions in C/C++/Assembly/whatever, and so on for other languages

@Pietu1998 That is a good point!
As an example: Would you allow that languages that have functions can assume that the black box is a predeefined function f even if they have functional capabilities (I.e. pass functions as arguments)

@EriktheOutgolfer Nonono... How can It be shorter by not assuming something?!

well by not assuming something like that you have an excuse for your output format instead of adding a byte to compensate
or do I have to assume that?

@WheatWizard You should do a swapping sequences series where you need to maximize the number of working solutions. eg. set score to sth. like #bytes/#sequences

I thought about that. I just haven't had the time to work out a scoring system I think is fair
#bytes/#sequences probably wouldn't be the best.

Otherwise it could get killed as a dupe

Based on some playing around I did it seems to me that the best strategy was to just do 2 sequences.

I think constant sequences should be outlawed though
That was my main regret for the first iteration

Q: Finding n'th character in a Lucky String

Dangling_pointerLucky numbers are those numbers which contain only "4" and/or "5". For example 4, 5, 44, 54,55,444 are lucky numbers while 457, 987 ,154 are not. Lucky number sequence is one in which all lucky numbers exist in increasing order for example 4,5,44,45,54,55,444,445,454,455... Now we concate...

Why on earth is that a ?
