2:58 AM
@MattE.Эллен Which 'in here' are you talking about? Have you had your mind-comm on all this time?
@JasperLoy I just repeat things others have already said.
Like this:
May 17 at 19:08, by Mitch
everything's been done before

4 hours later…
6:36 AM
@Mitch I doubt you have been sued for copyright infringement yet. I'd try that if I had the standing, just in order to be somewhat original! =P

↔ are those arrows considered 'orthogonal' in a 1D vector space? (want to see if opposite can be the same than orthogonal somehow)

3 hours later…
9:36 AM
Is there a four-part priority list in English? Something like this:
- very important
- important
- half important
- not very important

@Mitch I might have been infected by a virus that makes me think I can hear what everyone is thinking
@MartinAJ there's the 5 point Likert-type scale. you could mod it down to 4
stupid url with an asterisk.
no image inlining for me :(

@MattE.Эллен You are still an orc after so many years!

9:51 AM
@MattE.Эллен thx

@MartinAJ I don't think that is really an English question.

@JasperLoy Orc to the bone.

Did I tell this chat I am using Windows 10 now and Office 2016? No more Linux and LibreOffice for me!
I finally heard from Kit some time ago, but I hope she comes to chat too!

I don't know. I use Win 10 on my desktop, but I have no need of Office.
I haven't seen her here for a few weeks.
But I haven't been around much myself

I have watched all her videos on youtube, lol.

9:55 AM
Yeah, she does some good ones :D

I don't like ASMR, but I watch them because I want to listen to her talk about life etc, lol.
In fact, I don't get ASMR. Is it even real?

I assume all the people who experience it aren't making it up
there'd be no benefit in making it up

It's a tingling sensation, and of course I get that sometimes too, but very rarely, and not from watching vids.

I mean, some people could be making it up to be part of the community, but there must be a core of people for whom it is real. @Cerb says ASMR happens to him, but he doesn't like it.

Like sometimes I touch paper in a certain way I get those tingles.
And sometimes I think of touching paper in a certain way and getting those thingles I also get those tingles.

10:01 AM
:D

Maybe that's about it for me. Paper is strange.

10:33 AM
Hi, everyone
Could anyone tell me the phrase "in the works" mean, and where it originates from?

10:45 AM
@DmytroO'Hope you can check a dictionary for meaning.
It probably originates from manufacturing

11:02 AM
I have checked it, and you are right, works are the place where things are done

user288256
@Tonepoet You Americans, always thinking about suing each other.

user288256
@Tonepoet what does "standing" mean there Tone?

11:30 AM
@Ghalib It's legalese for having the right to sue due to being a party affected by some legal wrong.
If you don't have standing in court, your case can be automatically dismissed.

I am so happy I got 14 points from editing 7 posts yesterday.

@JasperLoy Congratulations. I couldn't even imagine getting that much in a single day from editing, though the only way I found to have a surefire edit is to add attribution to posts which are otherwise missing it. I'm relatively glad to have over 2,000 rep. points now, so I don't have to be reviewed.
I'm assuming they were great edits if they were so readily accepted.

@Tonepoet My edits are the best.

@MattE.Эллен Umm I do like it!

11:46 AM
@Cerberus oh! my mistake. I thought I remember you saying you didn't. maybe you don't like the videos?

I can't imagine being susceptible to ASMR and not liking it!
I like the videos.

oh. well, I guess it was my imagination

That is, I find them super bizarre and ridiculous, but they get the job done.

But everyone agrees that they are bizarre.

11:47 AM
yes

Good.

@Cerberus You mean you really get tingles?

Sure.
Don't you?
And hello.

No, I only get tingles from paper.
I also get many cuts from paper.
I also love to smell paper.

Interesting.

12:00 PM
I am trying to go vegetarian from now.

@JasperLoy Hmm, this might not be too much of a help to you right now, unless you're willing to mail order food long distance but the Beyond Meat corporation makes some rather good meat substitute products. The Beast Burger is the only fake burger my mother actually enjoyed eating, and their Beyond Burger is supposed to be an even more convincing facsimile.

@Tonepoet Well, I usually don't eat fake meat products, because I think the real vegetables are much nicer. =P

@JasperLoy That's fair enough.

12:41 PM
@caub No. orthogonal is very different from opposite. Orthogonal is literally perpendicular (dot product = 0), but opposite is parallel in the negative direction. Metaphorically, orthogonal means unrelated, opposite means related but the only difference being in exactly the other direction.

@Mitch orthogonal = normal = perpendicular QED

user288256
I don't particularly like vegetables. I love fruits and meat etc.

user288256
I have never watched Rick and Morty. Is it good for English? If it is I might watch it someday.

@Ghalib It's a bit ... profane

user288256
12:49 PM
oh okay.

I mean dark
It's hilarious in a nihilistic kind of way.

user288256
Yeah, it gives me not so pleasant vibes.

user288256
Maybe I am not used to such cartoons.

user288256
I like Disney cartoons/animations.

Language wise I think it might be hard because it is very slangy and close to real life. Morty, the grandson, speaks like a real person, inarticulate, with stops and starts and half sentences.
So maybe it is actually good if you watch once with subtitles/once without

user288256
12:52 PM
I see. Yeah.

@Ghalib Disney is not as dark as Rick and Morty
Nothing is as dark as Rick and Morty
Wait... Disney can get pretty dark

user288256
Disney has these songs in a mid cartoon that is fun too.

All of them have some tragedy to them...the movies have a lot more additional fun stuff than the original Grimm's fairy tales, which were full of death, dismemberment, and general pain.

@Mitch did you see this?

Bambi is a shockingly real life movie and should not be shown to children.
Hmmm... maybe Lion King is a little worse.
As an aside, 'The Circle of Life' is just a fun song to get all the zebras to accept their anxiety-ridden lives ending in disembowling murder by the lions.

12:57 PM
for some reason Scar doesn't have the same charisma and can't make the Zebra feel grateful for the lions killing them.

@MattE.Эллен Wait.. did I post that? Get out of my head!
@MattE.Эллен THat's politics!
There should be a musical about that!

politics? or lions killing zebra?

Scar doesn't have the right voice

sounds too much like someone who's going to double cross you

Who do you root for when a cheetah or pack of lions are attacking a gazelle?
See how cruel the gazelles are by escaping the lions, leading them to a torturous slowing impending starvation?

1:00 PM
mostly the predator

Exactly.

there are loads of gazelle
poor starving lions

they can spare a few

user288256
@Mitch That's mean man.

unless the narrator has been focussing on the gazelle. I'm easily swayed by emotional manipulation

1:01 PM
I'm there more for the music and snacks
and gazelle burgers
a little gamey though

I would think so. they've not been massaged. they have to be lean

But to answer your question, yes, I did see that Rick and Morty episode

@Mitch my "this" is a link
to Rick and Morty meta-trivia

@MattE.Эллен I've heard that the flush of adrenaline in the gazelle's bloodstream in their final moments race gives the meat a certain twang

I guess that's why accessibility guidlines say you shouldn't make "this" into a link

1:03 PM
@MattE.Эллен There's a link? looks for glasses
needs glasses to find glasses
looks for those

schwifty

@MattE.Эллен Haha no I didn't. Is that really from McDonald's though? If so, somebody got fired.

The internet says it is, so probably not.
I need lunch. CU

I was unconscious in 1998 so I can't judge
@MattE.Эллен Perfectly understandable. In a court of law that is. This, this I can judge.
@MattE.Эллен No it was color, OK and also it being a short word. For me needs more contrast. literally. the dark red looks so much like the black, with the background being... taupe? beige? mocha? Damned millenials with their good eyes and shit, eyeing my lawn like they're about to walk on it.
@JasperLoy people get mixed up with the metaphorical usage because opposite and orthogonal both seem to be 'not' the original (and that is not exactly wrong because of the amphiboly of 'not')

user288256
1:49 PM
Ten hour loops are... crazy. :P

user288256
Who listens to them?

raises hand while continuing to bob head

user288256
heh

you must be out of your mindyou must be out of your mind
some people prefer a fresh coat of white paint to clear the distractions. I prefer a fresh coat of paisley.

user288256
Paisley is a nice design.

user288256
2:01 PM
And I have been listening to vocal trance.

I'm putting together a list of SE sites which support YouTube embedding over on MSE. Can a moderator confirm whether or not ELU has YouTube embeds enabled?

Egads

(I'm almost certain it doesn't, but videos aren't shown in the Markdown preview, so there's no way to test without a meta post)

2:23 PM
I don't know. I don't think so.

There also doesn't seem to be a site-specific sandbox here I can test with

You are welcome to post a request on Meta, to see if anyone wants it and to test at the same time.
No, as far as I know, we don't have a sandbox.

@KitZ.Fox I would, except I think I've been rate-limited for questions across SE while testing.

Oh.

Oh wait, nevermind. Turns out the notification for "You can only post once every 40 minutes" was just not displaying for some reason

2:26 PM
Oh, you're the 'wife beater' guy.

Lmao. I guess that's how I'm known now

It doesn't look like you are limited on our site at the moment.
@StevenVascellaro Until you ask an even better question.

It's a network-wide limitation. You can only ask 1 question every 40 minutes it seems

huh

2:28 PM
I guess I've never tried to ask a bunch at once.

I'm getting this on Android Meta, a site I've only ever posted once on

So I watched Gone Girl last night and I think everyone should.

@RegDwigнt I've had that on my list for a while now.
Was it that good or that bad?
@StevenVascellaro Low rep?

On Android Enthusiasts? It got the tumbleweed badge, so no votes.
I think it's just a network-wide thing

Mornin.

2:34 PM
I mean, I'm posting a single question with external YouTube URLs across multiple sites on the SE network. It's no wonder the system wants to rate limit me.

@MetaEd Hiya!

It's why I've started asking in chat before posting.

I see. Your enthusiasm is for more than just Android.

It's more that I'm testing a specific topic about per-site formatting, which means every site has different rules
5
A: Which sites have YouTube embedding on?

Steven VascellaroI've put together an incomplete list of sites based on manual testing and site-specific research. (Essentially, searching posts from every site and running tests when necessary) The majority of the hyperlinks below point to relevant meta discussions about whether YouTube embedding should or shou...

Initially I was only testing major sites, or ones where it seemed likely videos would be enabled
Then I learned that Aviation and Bicycles support embedded videos.
Now I realized that I can't really make assumptions on which sites are supported

@KitZ.Fox I like the thumbnail in that video. Hiii.

2:40 PM
@JasperLoy Hello, my friend. I am glad you are here.
@StevenVascellaro Maybe just write a script.

@KitZ.Fox I don't want to auto-post to any community that has a per-site sandbox, or that already has a post discussing video embedding.

@StevenVascellaro Why? I mean, what's the point? If you want to post a video somewhere where it isn't supported, you'll find out soon enough. And then who will maintain the answer? New sites are appearing pretty often these days.

I mean like they did with TeX.

Oh, and no, Unix & Linux doesn't support it either and neither does Bioinformatics (I'm a mod on both).

Then you don't have to maintain the answer.

2:42 PM
But your list is missing loads and loads of sites.

@terdon Oh for sure.
I only started the list because the previous list by Jeff Atwood only had 4 sites

I get it, but I just don't see any point in having such a list. Even if it were useful to someone, it will be out of date by this time next week.

@terdon There are only 8 sites I've seen which support embedding since it was introduced 2 6 years ago
It isn't a rapidly updating list

@StevenVascellaro It is if you also include sites that don't support it, as your answer currently does.
I would recommend you only lists sites that have it enabled rather than try to list everything.

@terdon Probably a good idea. I only included the other sites so I could keep track of which sites I've already checked

2:51 PM
@StevenVascellaro Makes sense. And do what you want, of course, it just seems like a huge amount of effort for very little benefit to me. But hey, that's why we have so many different people who find so many different things interesting.

3:22 PM
I find conjugation interesting
Mostly because it's a word that you can never tell the meaning of unless you know the context
So our talk sounds like Wikipedia
"I find conjugation (chemistry) interesting"
It probably even has more than one meaning in math

@M.A.R. I've just been conjugating (macroeconomics)

yoking things together is a popular pastime in many fields

Conjugating is one of my favorite leisure time activities (health care reform)

Let's not forget conjugal visits

I just conjugated and it's a real mess! (circus performance metrics)
@MattE.Эллен Visiting conjugs always gives me mixed emotions.

3:27 PM
@Mitch hey, you didn't mention which context 'mess' is in

In other news, I'm looking forward to spaghetti for lunch.
What did you have for lunch already?

I'm jealous without knowing
Now I know

Now you know

I have to say Popeye's is way better than KFC

Popeye's . . . eyes?

@Mitch that's not true in the UK

I'm not saying anything is wrong with KFC, other than that it'll kill you.

So that's why one of his eyes seemed lost
@Mitch eventually.

If you get Popeye's chicken in the UK, it'll be cold and I have no idea if it travels well

3:29 PM
KFC chicken fat is not metabolized in the stomach, it is absorbed directly into the blood stream, and deposited directly to walls of arteries and veins supplying your heart.
Like with a trowel

Some guy ate KFC for lunch and died 80 years later.
It's an agonizing poison

oh no! I'd best give it up immediately

There's a word for that in Italian
But I don't know Italian so...

80 more years? I don't want to live that long

Popeye's does the same thing to be honest
@MattE.Эллен The first hundred years are the hardest

3:31 PM
@Mitch how are you finding the second 100 years?

@MattE.Эллен Christ

@MattE.Эллен it gets boring

@Mitch Now we know

@MattE.Эллен It's a breeze. You've kind of figured it all out. I mean there's always weird things popping up. I mean no one saw the iPhone coming. But you get used to dealing with changes like that.
@MattE.Эллен Wait... really? Popeye's not as good as KFC there? I did not see that coming.

@Mitch you think iPhone is weird, and not people statusing whenever they sneeze?

3:38 PM
@Mitch it would have to exist to be as good

@M.A.R. pretty obvious that was going to happen ... once iPhone happened.
Just a moment...
updating my status...
and ...
done.

bless you

@MattE.Эллен Touché
If I had wanted to be a philosopher, I would have remained silent
@M.A.R. OK here's a thing I don't get. Taking pictures of your plate at a restaurant. It's not like the chef has never made that before. Or as if you have never been to a restaurant and gotten something similar. Or that there isn't a much much better photographer (or just some dude in the kitchen) who could take a much much better picture.
Unless you're on vacation. That I've done.

Here's a thing I don't get: Taking pictures of your empty plate

Or Popeye's. That stuff'll kill you but it's just the best ever.
@M.A.R. Is it before the meal or afterwards?

3:45 PM
@Mitch afterwards
Or taking a selfie with the airplane ladder

Again, why not take a picture of a filled dishwasher or dish-filled sink? Much more efficient quality control

Or taking a selfie on the airplane ladder

@M.A.R. Oh, that does sound interesting. Because no one would have thought to do that because you're so busy trying to go up it and making sure where to stand and all those other people rushing to get on and then HAH gotcher picture struggling up into the plane.

I generally don't get selfies
At least the way they're done here
And I shouldn't say that as a juvenile pesky teen

I don't understand how to do it. I always ask other people to take a selfie for me.

3:51 PM
They take 500 selfies, delete 450, and share the last 50 on an instagram thingy where the only people watching them are the friends they took the selfies with
And all those friends do the same thing

So it's a buttload of redundancy, and uselessness

@Mitch it's not a selfie if someone else takes it, surely?
or was that a joke?

@MattE.Эллен Mitch® Joke

@terdon Fun fact: Stack Exchange gets very suspicious when posting a question with multiple external URLs and HTML tags across multiple sites in rapid succession.

3:54 PM
@Mitch or do you have a phone full of pictures of people you've asked to take selfies?

@StevenVascellaro Heh. Did you have to prove you're not a robot? :P

@terdon I've managed to trigger 3 different forms of rate-limiting/spam prevention

:)

@StevenVascellaro well, you just get to solve a captcha

I know it's a super niiche case, but it really makes me this feature request was added

Q: Tell rate-limited users how long they have to wait before asking a new question

trejderNew users are limited to one question per an hour, but once they'll hit this limit, all they see is You can only post once every 60 minutes. I think it would be very appreciate to change / extend this message, adding You need to wait next xx minutes. I saw similar solutions on many forums. Would...

4:04 PM
@JasperLoy Classic. @KitZ.Fox's Brain Surgery Prep.

The hoover's track is spoor of wheels!

@terdon It's so obvious!

I posted that in the AU room and they asked if I was drunk. :(
I had to share the relevant monty python video. Philistines!

@terdon heh, not unexpected
Oh wait
I actually conflated AU's room with SU's
I've never been meaningfully to AU's main room

4:23 PM
This question: english.stackexchange.com/questions/403802/… asks for a letter map for words, will it be closed or could I provide a script to create a map

probably be closed. might be migrated to meta...

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Pattern-matching website in answer: Is it right to say "Smokers should be got rid of"? by Colin Fine on english.SE

@SmokeDetector cunning. copying a user name and answer to try and evade detection.
I triple checked what was going onto make sure Colin Fine hadn't gone rogue :D

Poor Brian-Williams-looking Colin

4:45 PM
is there a word meaning "not destroyed"? like "left alone" but more clearly about not being destroyed.
it's for a table heading, so I don't want to ask on the main site

@MattE.Эллен Pristine? Original?
Untouched?

oh, untouched, might work. I'm looking for a verb

Unmodified, unchanged, surviving, raw? Some more context would help, I guess.

it's about participants destroying their partners' payouts
number of times destroyed
number of times not destroyed
but I don't like having "not destroyed" because it's not easy to notice the difference
left intact... maybe

@MattE.Эллен Intact?
@MattE.Эллен Intacted then.

4:52 PM
thanks!

Oh...took me some time to red through the transcript. Jinx.

a little late
I'll get myself a coke.
Have you ever heard of Berkson's paradox?
Berkson's paradox also known as Berkson's bias or Berkson's fallacy is a result in conditional probability and statistics which is counterintuitive for some people, and hence a veridical paradox. It is a complicating factor arising in statistical tests of proportions. Specifically, it arises when there is an ascertainment bias inherent in a study design. The effect is related to the explaining away phenomenon in Bayesian networks. It is often described in the fields of medical statistics or biostatistics, as in the original description of the problem by Joseph Berkson. == Statement == The result...
I'd never heard of this.
Ever
and despite it looking fairly simple, I still don't 'get it'

I've heard of Fermi's paradox. Does that count?
Must it be Berkson's?

It explains why good looking people are jerks

4:56 PM
What do you have against Fermi, you . . . you anti-physicistism

@M.A.R. isn't Fermi's paradox about how come we haven't met aliens yet?

@Mitch that's not a paradox. That's the art of mother nature
@Mitch I dunno, I forgot

@M.A.R. Argh.. no.. Berkson's explains why chicks dig jerks.

And that's the law of nature
I'd've loved it if it was a paradox
@Mitch I said I've heard it not what it says

Berkson's jerks and chicks, berks and dicks.
Berkson's chicks dig dicks and jerks
