@EmilioPisanty it was - I've picked it now. Though there will no doubt be more if I can be bothered to look for them.

also, what are the gills of a mushroom?

google on the photo just give me generic mushrooms

I'm pretty sure there were no fish in the picture you posted

they are those folds underneath the mushroom cap

4:03 PM
@JohnRennie figures
weird name, still

Actually they do look a bit like fish gills.

well think about it, they are folded and layered like fish gills

yeah, I guess I can see the resemblance

IIRC, Gills are often quite diagnostic of the genus of the fungus, and in some cases, species. From colors to the fold patterns, it can help distinguish between two different genus of fungi

user228700
4:05 PM
@EmilioPisanty Very nice. I've just come from having watched a crappy horror movie and I am greeted by this.

Which crappy horror movie?

@Kaumudi.H blame @JohnRennie, he started it

@EmilioPisanty My fault we got from fungi to vivisected humans? :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie Oh, it's a Tamil movie.

@JohnRennie yes
100%

4:07 PM
@Kaumudi.H Ah, not one I would have heard of

all I did was google-images gills

user228700
It's supposed to be based on a somewhat true story about a certain street in Chennai which is deemed to be intensely haunted.

@EmilioPisanty really ...
... oh yes!

@JohnRennie I still think the simplest course of action is to just eat the 'shrooms and see what happens

user228700
Why is there any sense of urgency to find out what they do? Why don't ya just leave 'em be?

4:09 PM
OK I shall try that. If the worst happens I leave my body to science or the dog food factory ... or whoever wants it really.

user228700
@JohnRennie that-are you going to eat them?

@JohnRennie if you mysteriously stop posting we'll send Stephen Fry in his flying, vanishing form to look in on you

@Kaumudi.H no :-)

user228700
Don't consume random mushrooms!!

@Kaumudi.H these are British 'shrooms

user228700
4:10 PM
@JohnRennie Phew. Yeah, no, don't accidentally kill yourself.

anything in the British Isles that could conceivably be harmful to humans, other than cannibalistic cows, has long been driven to extinction by the relentless march of progress.
wolves?
gone
rabies?
gone

@EmilioPisanty cannibalistic cows sound harmful to other cows, not humans

Though sadly we are still afflicted by Brexiteers

user228700
@ACuriousMind x'D This made me literally LOL.

@JohnRennie ... arguably fits under cannibalistic cows?

Sid
4:11 PM
TIL that IOLING 2017 is in a couple of days. Rather sad that it doesn't get quite the publicity around here

@ACuriousMind tell that to the tabloids

Three decades after the BSE outbreak a majority votes for Brexit. Yes! It now makes sense!!!

meanwhile in australia, millions of animals will kill you in different ways

The incubation period was longer than we expected.

user228700
I have a proper "crisis" :-( I've accidentally renamed a bunch of .srt files incorrectly and now have no way to reverse this.

Sid
4:13 PM
What is BSE @JohnRennie

@Kaumudi.H What did you do? There's probably a way back.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad cow disease, is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy and fatal neurodegenerative disease in cattle that may be passed to humans who have eaten infected flesh. BSE causes a spongiform degeneration of the brain and spinal cord. BSE has a long incubation period, of 2.5 to 5 years, usually affecting adult cattle at a peak age onset of four to five years. BSE is caused by a misfolded protein—a prion. In the United Kingdom, the country worst affected by an epidemic in 1986–1998, more than 180,000 cattle were infected and 4.4 milli...
a.k.a. cannibalistic cows

user228700
I did this:

> BSE has a long incubation period ...

user228700

Sid
4:15 PM
What has that got to do with Brexit?

user228700
I'll probably need to delete them all and download 'em again.

Open the files in Notepad. They probably contain a header line telling you which episode they are.

because the joke that BSE has 3 decades of incubation period and all those who vote Brexit are mad cows

Keep up at the back there young Sid!
BSE can be passed to humans and you need to be mad to vote for Brexit!

user228700
@JohnRennie Nope, can't even do that.

4:17 PM
@JohnRennie To be honest, though, "vacas locas" has a better ring than either of mad cows or BSE

Sid
I still don't understand what harm Brexit does to Britain. Explain. @JohnRennie

@Kaumudi.H Yes you can. Run Notepad (Windows-R and type notepad.exe) then drag drop the files into the open Notepad window.

4:19 PM
experiments is probably what I'd go for

user228700
OH.

@JohnRennie "foreseeable experiments" is weird, though

user228700
I did that and found out that that is how you make these things but no header, nope. And since I haven't watched any of the episodes yet, I know none of the dialogues.

"foreseeable sources" might work

experimental protocols?

4:20 PM
@JohnRennie it's not really the protocol, it's just the hardware

unavailable to or unsuitable for ?

@JohnRennie as in, we just don't have the laser sources to implement the proposals
and we won't have them any time soon, either

in most cases, these limitations make the methods infeasible for current experiments and indeed for the foreseeable future

@JohnRennie bingo

@Kaumudi.H OK, probably easiest to redownload. Did you download them in order? If so you can tell from the timestamps. Explorer only shows you the timestamps to the nearest minute but Windows actually records them to the nearest second.

user228700
4:25 PM
No, no, I've gone ahead and re-downloaded them all; too much trouble to do all that.

Just click on the date colum header to sort the files by date
@Kaumudi.H Oh well :-)

user228700
Thanks anyway :-)

user228700
@JohnR: MAGGI?

The supermarket had some nice ham going cheap so I made a ham and cheese sauce.

user228700
Oh, nice :-) Was it good?

4:29 PM
It tasted very nice, but it was a bit heavy. The texture was a bit gluey. I ate it all though :-)

@JohnRennie you never seem to eat green things

In fact there was so much ham that I have some left over for tomorrow. I'll have to decide what to do with it.
@0celóñe7 I never eat anything a caterpillar has crapped on

user228700
@0celóñe7 I told you:

@JohnRennie are you serious?

@0celóñe7 No :-)

@0celóñe7 I eat a lot of veg and salads during the week.

user228700
Wait, wait, you have salads?!

user228700
4:33 PM
Does salad mean pizza in your tongue?

@JohnRennie Yet you don't seem to like any of them enough to post pictures here ;P

I like salads too but when I'm paying for ingredients they really don't make sense

@JohnRennie Do you always only make one thing?

user228700
HEY, that's not a salad! That's a risotto!

4:35 PM
@Kaumudi.H Why do you put everything in italics?

OK, so I don't eat very much salad.

The Indians in this chat have a strange understanding of how English is written

user228700
@0celóñe7 I don't. I only use italics for emphasis.

The italacs are for emphasis.

Your face is for emphasis.

4:36 PM
In fact the original HTML tag for italics was <em> for emphasis

user228700
And that's how I would've said it too, with emphasis on "salads" and "risotto", raising my pitch a bit when I say those words.

In any case, I am more concerned that @JohnRennie seems to make one thing
Sure, it's mixed in that picture

user228700
@JohnRennie :-)

I generally make just a single large course.

@JohnRennie Do you get salads at restaurants?

4:38 PM
@0celóñe7 Yes, and I eat them at the restaurant.

Ok, so @Kaumudi.H needs to lay off

She persecutes me! :-)

But I am still saying you don't eat a lot of vegetables

@0celóñe7 and I'm saying that I do, but (a) during the week not at weekends and (b) I never post the pictures because they're boing.

user228700
@JohnRennie :-) You're doing a 100% better job than me in literally ALL of the other fields so this is all I got.

4:40 PM
@Kaumudi.H Not in the hair department

Anyone knows the job market for the local physics academy? 1:5? or 1:50?

@Shing That is not correct English.

@0celóñe7 thanks for telling me

1:5,1:50

@Secret I know what he is saying, and it does not make sense.

4:41 PM
:39118083 when we skyped (fixing the PC) I hadn't showered yet so I still had a seriously bad case of bed hair :-)

@JohnRennie So when you make vegetables the side is always boring?

needs total empolyment to use those ratios, really

For instance broccoli would go well with what you made there

user228700
@JohnRennie Oh, yeah, like I have excellent hair. OK, yeah, I do :-P (Hmm, this didn't ping me)

@JohnRennie Lol how did you have bed hair you're 5 hours after me

4:43 PM
@0celóñe7 Generally speaking I try to eat healthy low calorie meals Monday to Friday. I try to make them as tasty as possible, but they're never going to be as nice as something with lots of fat and salt in it.

@JohnRennie I think that at my age salt is irrelevant as long as I drink enough
I don't know how old people do it

@0celóñe7 I get up about 5 and go straight to work. Then I shower and shave about midday. So you saw me just at the end of my working stint.

not saying you're old, of course

user228700
@JohnRennie Dang, now I'm curious! You're so secretive about your identity, Laptop Man!

@Kaumudi.H He really isn't
I won't make it easier for you though
@JohnRennie I packed up all of my kitchen stuff and can't make food

4:45 PM
I don't honestly know whether salt really is bad for you or no. I'm disinclined to take dieticians too seriously and anyway I don't want to live forever ( (c) Motorhead )

this seems like an excuse for fast food

user228700
Yeah, no, I respect his decision not to update his profile picture but I am curious :-P We've only ever gotten really old pictures!

@0celóñe7 yes, but ... well ... fast food tastes really nice :-)

@JohnRennie I don't understand people who say McDonald's doesn't taste good
It's pretty amazing

I love McD's cheeseburgers :-)

4:46 PM
the shame and guilt is real, but still
@JohnRennie they have $1 cheeseburgers
it's ludicrous

Though sadly not in the UK ...

what is going on

user228700
@BalarkaSen Something about salt, McDonalds and John's hair.

user228700
@0celóñe7 Oh, well, at least there is confirmation that he is not a robot!

sounds like an interesting discussion

@0celóñe7 And quite cheap :D Only problem is that it can be unhealthy on a daily basis

user228700
It's petered out, apparently.

I don't like most fast foods (Except burgers and some friend chicken). They are usually too oily in taste (yes, fat is a taste!)
As a result, I do spontaneously eat salad at times
(and sometimes, too lazy to even put balsamic vinegar into it)

user228700
@JohnR: I'm actually quite surprised at the rate at which I am able to download those files. Only 2 more to go!

Good :-)
Are they through your phone or your gran's wireless?

@Secret cannibalism spotted

4:55 PM
If they're through your phone then that's some seriously good 4G connection you've got.

user228700
@JohnRennie :-D Some were through my phone and some through this hotspot thing I've got on a separate device.

that's one mother(insert word) typo: friend->fried

@Kaumudi.H though the hotspot presumably also works through 4G?

user228700
Same thing, yes.

Given the aggressive friend finder that Facebook provides it is hard to believe that a school student can have only 4 "friends" :P

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen Yep. It is the only number which can be written both as 1+3 and 3+1.

5:10 PM
Well, you can choose to ignore the friend finder. e.g. I only add people I knew in real life

user228700
@JohnRennie OK, bye! :-)

user228700
@Blue Yeah, I'm not very keen on adding literally everyone I know in real life...

user228700
Hmm. Whatever floats ur boat, man.

Having said that, the wave of unfriends are making me extremely reluctant to add new people to facebook even if I knew them in real life

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H I don't have a boat. :P

Not adding them prevent them from unfriending me in the first place (since my real life interaction seldom decays)

Anonymous
@Secret Heh? Which "wave of unfriending" ? And why?

5:19 PM
If my logs are correct, in mid 2012, there are 22 sudden unfriend occured that makes me frustrated because there is no explanation
all 22 of them are my high school classmates which are quite close in Grade 11
Later on in uni, another 24 unfriends occured, again unexplained
This is why I don't emotionally deep trust most of my real life friends now except those before primary school

user228700
@JohnR:

user228700

user228700
Done and done. Thanks so much! :-) You can remove them now.

and to top that, in 2016, two friends where one is REALLY close, is revealed to be a lie and just oppotunists or does not really care

Anonymous
Hmm. Never experienced something like that. So perhaps I shouldn't comment. However, I myself did unfriend+block a few people because I felt that either they are irritating or I never met them in real life (and probably never will) or that they were making way too many posts which are not suited to my taste.

On that night, I was so in the blue and so furious with anger burning in a soot black flame where I then subtlely cursing that the whole world is going to be slowly decaying, taking her with it if the world refused to explain why within 10 years
"anger burning in a soot black flame", that's a metaphor, because bright red flames of hot anger are nothing compared to this

@0celóñe7 that's possibly the weirdest thing you've ever said
and that's not an easy field to top

@Secret Maybe you should not take such blocks or unfriending seriously. Not everyone is meant to stay in your life forever. We need to move on. :)

5:28 PM
Well... what irritates me is not really the unfriend
Jan 20 at 10:16, by Secret
---
Another example of the compulsiveness of the dark thoughts is it abhors a lack of explanation of a phenomenon (possibly because unfairness and its lack of closure is frequently unexplained). The dark thoughts, if they were a person, is a very stubborn person that believes in that everything has an explanation, and will force everything to give the explanation if there isn't one
its the fact that the unfriend or block is unexplained and I demand an explanation to have security plans for the future to prevent encountering that dread again
But anyway, life goes on as usual, so its not really much of a deal except a memory sting
But yeah, that's part of my central darkness of the dark side:
> a very stubborn person that believes in that everything has an explanation, and will force everything to give the explanation if there isn't one

@Secret Getting feedback/explanations is a privilege, man. Realized it a few days back.

well over these many years, I did learn to be more patient. This is one reason why I seldom have questions to ask now

@EmilioPisanty Wow, they turned on HNQ for that site without having moderators appointed? That's a recipe for disaster if you ask me.

because a) I can wait and I understand and b) there are other ways to probe the questions

@ACuriousMind they what?

5:34 PM
@EmilioPisanty The site doesn't have pro-tem moderators yet...

that's ridiculous

However, when it comes to people, it is a bit hard. They are really the only ones who have an answer, and that pathway is inaccessible, making it very frustrating

@EmilioPisanty I concur

My memories are not as forgiving, though, everytime they are triggered, they will try to seek for the answer or failed and then go on hibenate again, gettign stronger with each recall

@Secret have you ever thought of starting an actual blog?

@Secret Wordpress is a good alternative. You can also use LaTeX there.

6:23 PM
I need a hint to solve the above problem. Just a hint not the solution.

@ACuriousMind Can you explain how to do a math research poster?

Step 1: do the research. Step 2: prepare the poster.
@0celóñe7 More seriously, you need to start by thinking about your audience. Who are they? How much will they know coming in?
But you are going to give them some version of (a) what the problem is, (b) how you attempted to improve on the situation, (c) what you accomplished and (d) where you go from here.
The answers to the audience questions inform how you divide the available space between the parts of the message.

[Random] Stringloop theory

@Abcd The hint is "too much force between the shoes and the ground will result in skidding rather than propelling the runner".

6:38 PM
@0celóñe7 No idea
@dmckee's advice applies well for all sorts of presentations, though

@ACuriousMind It is, in fact, the same content advice I give for talks.

@dmckee Thanks

6:59 PM
@ACuriousMind So, 4D hotshot, what's this a projection of?

@EmilioPisanty I'm gonna go with "3d projection of 4d cube"

@ACuriousMind wuss
gone with the simplest possible choice, have we?
=P
but yes

@dmckee what is it?

@EmilioPisanty Actually, I thought that that looks like the natural generalization of the projection of a cube into two dimensions - the cube projects to "two squares inside of each other", so the 4d cube should project to two cubes inside of each other.

@ACuriousMind hmmmm, yes and no
it's not 'generic'

7:05 PM
A 4-d cube is just a cube bundle over a line

@EmilioPisanty What do you mean? That a 5d cube won't project to two 4d cubes inside of each other (whatever that means :P)?

@0celóñe7 how enlightening

@ACuriousMind I mean that most projections won't look like that
most projections will look like the video's thumbnail
they're not two cubes inside of each other

Well, "most" projections of the 3d cube to 2d aren't two squares inside of each other, either

each cube contains a vertex of the other, but neither cube contains the other
the first one I posted has been chosen such that the red-vertex-inside-the-blue-cube coincides with the blue-vertex-inside-the-red-cube
↑ that's another good one

7:11 PM
@ACuriousMind what is it?

> give them some version of (a) what the problem is, (b) how you attempted to improve on the situation, (c) what you accomplished and (d) where you go from here.

@EmilioPisanty Okay, so the generic way to make my analogy is to say that the projection of a cube in d dimensions to d-1 dimensions is two d-1-dimensional cubes with each vertex of one cube connected to a corresponding vertex on the other cube.

@ACuriousMind yes
but possibly degenerate
and also
the connections will make a bunch of additional d-1-dimensional cubes

@EmilioPisanty well, yes

... in non-obvious ways, I guess is the point
so e.g. can you point to the two 3-cubes of your analogy in the sketch above?

7:17 PM
@Slereah Well actually, maybe it's better to think of a cube as a line bundle over a cube
So we have a fibration $\cdots \to C_n\to C_{n-1}\to\cdots \to C_2\to [0,1]$

@0celóñe7 but that doesn't contain any more information than saying that it's $I^4$

@Slereah I am working on my expository skills
trying to make things seem more impressive than they actually are

hmmm. or maybe the sketch is wrong

@JohnRennie I had a salad just now

7:21 PM
Are you Secret now?
2

^^ that's probably more accurate

@EmilioPisanty ^there they are
(there are other possible choices, of course)

@ACuriousMind that works but it's not the canonical choice
there are three pairs like yours
and one unique pair

@dmckee why will he slip if he exerts more force than maximum possible friction?

vzn
@JohnRennie lol an ambiguous innocuous-or-not sentence that begs for elaboration...?

7:30 PM
@EmilioPisanty There's a canonical choice now?

canonical in the sense that there's only one choice that's congruent to it in this projection

Can anyone explain why I'll slip if I run while applying more force than maximum possible frictional force between me and the ground?

@Abcd Can you answer the reverse question, i.e. why you don't slip when applying less force?

@Abcd well, how else would you define "maximum possible frictional force", other than "the force where you start slipping if you apply more force than that"?

@EmilioPisanty ::shrug::

7:36 PM
@EmilioPisanty coefficient of friction * Normal force

@Abcd yes, but why?

@ACuriousMind I can't answer that.

or in other words, that's just playing with words, in a way. How do you define the coefficient of friction, then?

@EmilioPisanty it's a constant of proportionality

@Abcd ... which is defined as...?

7:38 PM
@EmilioPisanty ratio of frictional force and normal force

@Abcd which frictional force?

@EmilioPisanty depends on the situation, either kinetic or static

Say I put a one-ton block of stone on the ground. if I push on it with 1 N of force, the frictional force is 1N. if I push on it with 2 N of force, the frictional force is 2 N.
The frictional force therefore depends on the circumstances.
@Abcd static, obviously

yes

it's therefore meaningless to say "the ratio of static frictional force to normal force" because the former is undefined.
So, here's the challenge: define "maximum possible frictional force" in a way that (i) does not depend on undefined concepts, and (ii) is not circular.
:39120471 well, that's your hint.

7:45 PM
@EmilioPisanty Maximum possible frictional force is the maximum force exerted by the ground on the object in the direction opposite to the direction of relative motion between the object and the ground.

@Abcd so
there you have it

@EmilioPisanty How?

@Abcd that's for you to figure out
you asked for a hint

Okay, thanks but this was a separate question @EmilioPisanty

1 hour later…
8:54 PM
@EmilioPisanty what?
@EmilioPisanty what?
@dmckee I don't know
