... damn

4:21 AM
@TheRaidersofLasVegas It was supposed to be funny, not savage

4:39 AM
Isn't he studying astrophysics? @0celoñe7

@TheRaidersofLasVegas Nah, it's just a joke :P

5:38 AM
All I'm saying is big brother could construe it as a joke in "questionable" taste.

/me yawns
5 hours sleep

[Some analogy]
Frequentists are like people with perfect knowledge. The probability distribution never changes
Bayanesians are like people with imperfect knowledge. The probability distribution updates based on the outcomes of the experiment as it accumulates
Both views will coincides once a suffciently large number of trials are taken, that way, any new outliers can only shift the bayanesian probability distribution a little due to (something related to) law of large numbers
This also explains how under the bayanesian model, it can be easily misused. The quality of the probability distribution depends on the quality of the evidences, thus garbage in garbage out principle applies

11:47 AM
Thanks pal @Loong :-)

1 hour later…
1:03 PM
ugh
@skullpatrol Why did you move those comments to the trash?
@JohnRennie going home for a couple weeks
should I take lots of books so I have options or take a small number of books so I don't procrastinate

I'd probably take only the books I really want to read ...
Though the Internet has made procrastination easy under all circumstances :-)

Lately I've taken to procrastinating via starting a half-dozen projects, then deciding it's too much and playing a video game instead
Why did you people let me get a gaming PC

Anonymous
1:25 PM
@0celoñe7 Don't worry. Even playing video games will increase your country's GDP. ;)

^I'm more of this school

Sid
1:45 PM
@heather that's exactly what I used to feel few years back. Then, I simply began missing friends in high school

@Loong Yey, the night comes sooner!
@0celoñe7 Me too, yus
Without games, I'd likely have killed my self with a diy project by now

Sid
@0celoñe7 For doing exactly that! Don't you know, all of us here are conspiring against increasing USA's GDP? :P

@djsmiley2k In my case, "oh, the night comes back"

@Loong LongDayWhereEverThatPlaceInNorwayeben is?
I can't remember the name and too lazy to google lol
Tho it sounds like the perfect cure for depression, half the year

@djsmiley2k I am in Finland.

1:50 PM
longnewyear..... oh god what's it called :D
Oh right, hehe
Only Scandi country i've visited is Iceland.
10/10 would eat their bacon again.

2:09 PM
Sitting in a bus, according to a display it's three hours later than it actually is and the temperature is 85°C. I hope I survive this.

an object faster than the speed of light eh
it'd still be visible lol
just, not at where ever it is XD

@ACuriousMind 185 degrees F!?

Sid
@ACuriousMind ... 85 degrees celsius?
Holy crap.

i hope that display is wrong =P

that's .... deadly heat

2:15 PM
The display is most certainly wrong, since I can breathe without cooking myself :P

^^
that's your skin is starting ti stiffen

Sid
must be 85 degrees fahrenheit

suddenly I have visions of randall of xkcd making a graph of what happens to humans at various tempretures

Sid
In which case, it is cold

@Sid or it's engine temp

Sid
2:16 PM
Or that, of course. ^

I don't know where @ACuriousMind is located tho...
<Venus>
:D

Sid
They claim to be in Germany, I think.

> I'm currently a student of physics at the University of Heidelberg
indeed.
No parts of Germany are naturally 85C right now.

@ACuriousMind might be vacationing

welp TIL that puncture resistant tyres really aren't that expensive.

2:18 PM
in the inside of a volcano, on Venus, on Mercury in the daytime
under a giant lens

Now this makes me want to try riding again.... i'd always end up stopping/giving up any kind of regular riding, simply because punctures...
@heather infact how warm does the Moon get during daylight?
> When sunlight hits the moon's surface, the temperature can reach 253 degrees F (123 C). The "dark side of the moon" can have temperatures dipping to minus 243 F (minus 153 C)

123 degrees C, approximately, according to google
beat me to it =P

@heather sort of - going to my hometown right now and then to Wacken next week

@Sid wot

Sid
2:35 PM
@0celoñe7 well, that's cold for Indian summers. But, yeah. Around this time, the temperatures are similar

2:53 PM
i feel like as soon as i figure out one problem, (at least) two more pop up, like hydra heads =/

Any mod in the room: @Qmechanic @DavidZ @ACuriousMind: physics.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/183808
!!
Despite "Our system has identified this edit as possible spam; please review carefully" !

@TheDarkSide so...what is a mod supposed to do here?

@ACuriousMind Nothing? I thought probably a word about careful reviewing. AFAIK that happened once earlier.
Alright. Ignore it if it is fine. Sorry for the ping.

3:11 PM
Your ping suggested you thought some urgent action ought to happen :P If you see stuff like this - edits that shouldn't have been approved - and think it requires some sort of action, please raise a mod flag on the post instead of a chat ping, that leaves a much better trail in the system

Alright.

i have come to chew bubblegum and kick ass

3:30 PM
@BalarkaSen and you're all out of ass?

hahhah
yes

user228700
Hey, everyone :-)

are you at college yet
@BalarkaSen what are you learning?

user228700
@0celoñe7 Who, me?

3:40 PM
@0celoñe7 not much
workshop ended today

@Kaumudi.H yes
@BalarkaSen What did you learn?

not much
it was mostly analytic

user228700
No, I'm at my grandparents' place, which is a few hours away from college. Orientation is on Tuesday.

@BalarkaSen So went over your head/just didn't care?

Nah, I did pick up a few things.
I learn some Riemann surface theory, hyperbolic geometry of surfaces, dynamics on negative curvature manifolds, etc

3:43 PM
Do you have a reference for the third?

I was told Rufus Bowen has a book

@BalarkaSen So it was ergodic theory?

yup

I have ergodic theory on negative curvature on my list already. The list is ridiculous
every time I talk to my advisor he tells me to read two more books
I don't know how @ACuriousMind never reads books

he's a effing bot m8

3:48 PM
@BalarkaSen So where are you in dC?

still need to learn Jacobi fields

@BalarkaSen Ah, I did want to talk to you about curve geometry
@BalarkaSen We have a smooth embedded curve $\gamma:S^1\to\Bbb R^2$. Does the term "normal angle" mean anything to you? I think it's the angle to the $x$-axis of the inward pointing normal vector.

Could be. I have never heard of that terminology.

Call that angle $\theta$. If $\gamma$ is convex then apparently one can parametrize the curve by that angle. I'm willing to believe that.

Should def be right

3:53 PM
Convex meaning either the curvature is always positive or the curve bounds a convex subset of the plane.
(I'm pretty sure they are equivalent, we've talked about that.)

user228700
@BalarkaSen Clearly, I have given up on the idea of reading Notes from Underground before my college starts :-/

But then one has $$(\frac{d\gamma}{d\theta},\vec t)=\frac{1}{k}$$
this guy doesn't explain the notation
I think $\vec t =d\gamma/ds$, where $s$ is arc length
@BalarkaSen @Kaumudi.H the Punjabi king

user228700
The video isn't loading; my internet speed is too low, mate, sorry.

@Kaumudi.H No issue at all.

user228700
@0celoñe7 It did load; my reaction: "Uhhhh, OK".

4:04 PM
dear god

@BalarkaSen what?
@Kaumudi.H He is the most famous Indian in America

user228700
Most famous living Indian, perhaps; Gandhi's gotta be the most famous Indian in America if you're allowed to count the dead as well.

nah

user228700
Who, then?

@Kaumudi.H ok, living Indian

4:10 PM
@Kaumudi I can't really imagine a generic American would recognize Gandhi

(am I wrong?)

user228700
Wtf, wow.

Yeah you're wrong
Way more people recognize Ghandi than NAV

huh
oh well

4:12 PM
But I don't know any living Indians
Besides NAV that is
And I represent a cross section of America pretty well

user228700
@0celoñe7 You know R. Shankar, don't you?

mhm
this is my favorite rap song by the way: youtube.com/watch?v=unRldLdllZ8
i am not sure if i mentioned that before

user228700
You haven't, no x'D

user228700
@0celoñe7 And you "know" us; we're both "living" Indians.

I do not identify myself as an Indian

4:16 PM
@Kaumudi.H I have his quantum mechanics book
If that's what you're talking about

user228700
That is, yep.

But there are far fewer people who know quantum mechanics than mainstream rap listeners

user228700
@BalarkaSen ...you don't?

@Kaumudi.H (a) I don't know your name (b) I don't really know you're Indian

user228700
What do you mean by "I don't know your name"?

4:18 PM
@Kaumudi Nope. Not to show any disrespect towards the nation of India or a generic Indian, of course.

user228700
Why not?

I do not identify myself as a member of this Earth.

user228700
Ah...

@Kaumudi.H Kaumudi H? Hilbert? Hildebrandt? Harikumar?

Hodge

4:18 PM
@BalarkaSen Ah, insanity then

user228700
@0celoñe7 Oh, that's a stupid argument; I'm sure you know lots of people in your real life whose full names you don't know.

user228700
@BalarkaSen I seriously wonder why he is bidding goodbye to everybody in his life using his cell phone.

@Kaumudi Most importantly, the background behind him is warping while he's doing that
Like, how is that even happening

@BalarkaSen yikes

Or why is he even wearing his cap on his back
One wears a cap on ones head

4:20 PM
a good song about phones:

not on ones buttock

@TheRaidersofLasVegas I don't think he produced this.

user228700
@BalarkaSen Hhaha x'D And I wonder what's with the white flag at the end.

user228700
4:23 PM
Is that "Peace, I'm out"?

Symbolic drama.

@TheRaidersofLasVegas I thought you meant DJ Drama.

DJ Symbolic Drama

@BalarkaSen Skyrim, Metro 2033, or harmonic analysis?

@Kaumudi Here is a good review.

user228700
4:27 PM
Ah, Memeulous :-)

@0celoñe7 I should say harmonic analysis, but you should play Skyrim
That means, Metro 2033?

@Kaumudi.H oh no
I feel old
I don't get the kids' memes

user228700
Heck if I do.

@BalarkaSen Maybe I should at least finish this chapter before I play a game

sure enough

4:29 PM
Oh...or maybe I should eat

Eat while you read.

user228700
@BalarkaSen No, no, most importantly, what sort of game is he playing?!

hehe
he plays good games
the playthroughs are nice to watch

Gamer's gotta game.

user228700
Heh, Pewdiepie used to be like that.

4:32 PM
I was too old for Pewds back in the day but his newer material is less cancerous

user228700
I have only watched his walkthroughs of Outlast and those I loved.

@BalarkaSen slight modding error i.imgur.com/iOG2rfZ.jpg

user228700
I have only watched his walthroughs of Outlast and those I loved.

@Kaumudi.H you should play Skyrim

user228700
4:36 PM
Why?

@Kaumudi.H life-changing experience

user228700
Ya should've told me when my holidays started, man, not now.

@Kaumudi.H What is wrong with now ?

you should read Borges

user228700
@0celoñe7 Got lots of crap on my plate :-/

4:38 PM
Skyrim, DOTA 2 and Rise of the Tomb Raider (on a really good computer, purely to experience what can be done with a good graphics card nowadays)

i tried to slowly descend down to insanity by reading that book

user228700
@BalarkaSen I have brought The Age of Reason here with me and I hope to read it slowly in the coming months.

@Kaumudi.H just don't do it
@Mithrandir24601 Skyrim doesn't need a really good computer
I am modding the hell out of it and it makes my GTX 1080 work though

user228700
@BalarkaSen Very nice (:-P).

@0celoñe7 No, neither does DOTA 2 :P I meant that you need to play Rise of the Tomb Raider on a really good computer, for the graphics

4:40 PM
@Mithrandir24601 How long is that game?
I'm getting pissed off by really short games lately

@0celoñe7 Which one?

Tomb Raider
Not that I need moer games

I don't think a video game could change my life.
3

Pretty short - I take my time and I completed it within 24 hours

@TheRaidersofLasVegas you're an old woman, set in your ways

4:42 PM
I mean, if you want a long game, DOTA 2 wins by default

and me

@Mithrandir24601 No I don't need any games
I just finished assassin's creed unity and it took like 11 hours

-_-

@TheRaidersofLasVegas when and where?

4:46 PM
Here and now

user228700
@Balarka: Oh, man, watch this. Or play it. When I finished watching it, my mind was f*ed for a few hours.

@skullpatrol How do you want to do it?

user228700
And I kept watching them too, till the end.

I have been recommended playthroughs of horror gameplays before. Maybe I'll start with that!

user228700
Let me know if you do.

4:48 PM
You decide @0celoñe7

I used to play this game called Penumbra:Overture which was pretty freakish

user228700
::Googles:: Oh, definitely looks it.

@Kaumudi Would you watch a low budget horror series on youtube if I recommended it

@ACuriousMind Please assist

user228700
@BalarkaSen Perhaps :-) Not this moment though; I am currently suffering from severe tonsillitis and am consuming a dark liquid that tastes like the bark of a tree.

user228700
4:51 PM
Which one?

Isn't that a perfect moment to watch something like that?

user228700
Ooh, looks interesting. Watching now (Tessa Violet can wait a bit).

user228700
It's fictitious, no?

yes of course

user228700
This information helps for I am currently also in the middle of a forest.

4:55 PM
DJ Fictitious

@Kaumudi.H you have cell reception in a random forest?
@BalarkaSen these names are amazing

user228700
Yep; Jio is sweeeet. It's not entirely random though; it's inside a village.

"Bernhelm BooB-Bavnbek and Krzysztof Wozciechowski"
@Kaumudi.H what are you on about
picture?

The village people?
Y
M

Blenderchild is in a horror movie, basically

4:59 PM
you know the rest
Starring Destiny's child

user228700

user228700
Forgive my latency; as I said before, the speed is quite low here.

user228700
(It is dark now)

user228700
@skullpatrol Hahaha :-)

Wow! You weren't kinding.

user228700
5:04 PM
Lol, no, I wasn't.

:-)

user228700
@Balarka: Sheesh, the speed is too low at the moment, man. I'll watch it in the morning.

(y)

user228700
@BalarkaSen Thought you weren't on Fb.

nah but i picked up a few things
i am on the internet, after all, unfortunately

user228700
5:08 PM
Right, of course.

Hi @JohanLarsson long time pal.

user228700
I gotta hit the sack; tonsillitis will be the death of me. G'night/day, folks.

cya

@Kaumudi.H cut them out

Have you had yours cut out?

5:14 PM
@BalarkaSen give this a listen youtube.com/watch?v=ExONI111fP4
@skullpatrol No, I am not a weakling.

Says you.

5:28 PM
@skullpatrol Yeah, I forget to open this tab :)

How are you? @JohanLarsson

Pretty good, coding, and you?

Fine, thanks.
:-)

Sid
5:48 PM
@0celoñe7 eh, it's not necessary that you need to be a weakling. I have got my appendix removed myself.
I have anaesthesia awareness. I felt the doctors removing my organs. If I survived that and am still talking to you, I can damn well say I am not a weakling

@Sid And half of the population push a baby head through a body hole
They can still be weaklings

Sid
Depends on what you define as a weakling

i do not feel particularly offended in being called a weakling or feel pride in not being a weakling. does that make me a weakling?
very metaphysical question
such meta

@BalarkaSen I don't count you as a human, so neither.

Relax guys.
Enuf "trash talk"

6:02 PM
is talking about trash talk also trash talk?
more generally, is talking about talking about trash talk, also trash talk?

yup

then you have clearly talked trash
sorry m8

Wow, your iq went up a few notches :P
m8
Go have a shower now and you'll feel like a new man.

i am a new man.

Was the camp that hard?

6:10 PM
the workshop?

yup

it is hard not to call it hard, but it is easy to call it not easy
does that answer your question?

I mean did they give you any good challenges?

Well it was mostly them teaching us whatever
but we had some interactions on some problems, yes

Any Physics?

6:16 PM
it was a mathematics workshop...
so, no.

Interesting.

Q: Was I too harsh?

ErikEJust wondering if I was too harsh in my comment on this answer to my question. https://physics.stackexchange.com/a/346589/1483 The commenter wants the question to be a different one and doesn't like the question as asked. His answer reveals this bias. I'm ok with leaving the answer, but why is ...

6:29 PM
> ::shots fired^::

6:47 PM
Hi all, trivial question about the omega in the Dyson equation, is it always positive? (xD, serious question)

@TheRaidersofLasVegas Try Super Metroid and report back.

hello

Will do @DanielSank
No news, will be good news :P
hi @heather

how goes it?

Sid
7:05 PM
@heather Hey! Holidays?

@Sid ?
school's out for the summer...

Sid
Oh. So, it is indeed holidays

how about for you?

Sid
In dorm. Playing cards with friends. :P
We are just reading the rules for some game and will play that next.

Uno?

Sid
7:09 PM
Nah. Something called Twenty-Nine..

right, so something I cannot play

Sid
Uno has a special set of cards I think

oh yeah. They're not the usual playing cards

1 hour later…
8:31 PM
@DanielSank it's not that good

1 hour later…
9:58 PM
@0celoñe7 then why is it near the top of everyone's "best video games of all time" lists?

10:16 PM
where can one find a good yet cheap chalkboard?

hey

by cheap, i mean less than the $45 I've currently seen as the lowest porcelain-steel one on amazon
@Dovah-king hello

in the country you guys live (i'm assuming its USA) how is the reputation of engineering physics/engineering science? i mean, if you work in industry, how is engineering physics known to it? or in the academic field, how is engineering physics seen by the physics academical comunnity? thanks

well, engineering jobs in industry here pay pretty well. i don't know exactly what you mean by reputation...

i mean,
engineering physics is relatively new in my country... the industry doesn't "know" it well

10:26 PM
ah. I'm not sure I'm qualified to respond to your questions =) I'm a highschool student, so.

Anonymous
@Dovah-king Engineering physics is basically a physics degree with focus on application. It is a fairly new stream almost everywhere. By jobs...if you look for engineering based jobs there are plenty. However "physics" jobs are quite less in number unless you wish to stay in academia or say want to be a professor.

@Blue
Thanks

Anonymous
@Dovah-king Where are you from ?

but my "seen by the physics academical community" was like: we know that physicists doesn't very much engineers in terms of speaking about science in general (btw i'm okay with that). Do you think that an engineering physicist
will have a little more "authority" when speaking of scientific research?
oh btw im from southern brazil

@heather cannot
Good boards are expensive.

10:32 PM
=/

@Dovah-king I'm not sure what you're asking. I have a PhD in physics and now I work in a lab at a company.

i really prefer chalkboards over whiteboards, but maybe a whiteboard would be better, just in terms of the chalk dust...
and whiteboards do seem to be cheaper.

@heather me too. There was some kerfuffle about this when we set up the quantum lab in Santa Barbara...

guess i'll have to think about it.

Anonymous
@Dovah-king I don't understand your point. Your "authority" depends on your knowledge and your research experience. I've seen so many engineers who have gone on to do great amount of research in physics. And yeah, an engineering physics degree should help you if you wish to do physics research...as it is just a physics degree! (NOT a core engineering degree)

10:45 PM
Thanks!
