A: Why didn't Gandalf know what the Palantir was?

DylanThis is something that bother me too when reading the book. Right when Gandalf mentions that he doesn't know how Mordor and Orthanc are communicating I was like what the hell, he just picked up a ball thrown from orthanc that he knows is a valuable treasure from what he says right after taking it...

@Mithrandir It does answer the question though - its hypothesis is that there were many spherical artifacts, and Gandalf didn't know all of them by heart, similar to One Ring.

Meh, I don't like it when people bury a seed of an answer in a bunch of junk.

That's another question, isn't it? Even without the question mark.

Yes, that looks like an answer.
Can't say anything about the quality of it, but I believe that it's technically an answer.

Hm. I took it to be a comment on Aegon's excellent answer.

It addressed the second point in the OP's question.

scifi.stackexchange.com/a/163473/19561 NaA flag deemed helpful, but the answer is still there.

Because it's an answer? I suspect that the two 'recommend deletion' reviews had something to do with it - scifi.stackexchange.com/review/low-quality-posts/108169

It is an answer

I read it as a comment on the accepted answer, but I agree how it can be seen as an answer.

Hmm you are correct @SQB, unfortunately it works as an answer as well

@Mithrandir strictly speaking, that is an answer. Speculative, unsourced, not serious, unfounded, but it is an answer.
