@LakshmiNarayanan By the way, if something in Shabara's Bhashya doesn't make sense to you, often the best resource to turn to is the works of Kumarila Bhatta, since they are commentaries on Shabara's Bhashya.

@LakshmiNarayanan Kumarila Bhatta wrote three commentaries which together comment on the entirety of Shabara's Bhashya: 1. The Shloka Vartika, which comments on Shabara's Bhashya on Adhyaya 1 Pada 1 of the Purva Mimamsa Sutras. 2. The Tantra Vartika, which comments on the rest of Shabara's Bhashya on Adhyaya 1 as well Shabara's Bhashya on Adhyayas 2 and 3. 3. The Tuptika, which comments on the rest of Shabara's Bhashya.

@LakshmiNarayanan Thankfully it's not that big of a loss, because the main interesting part of the Purva Mimamsa Sutras is Adhyaya 1, which the Shloka Vartika and the Tantra Vartika together cover.

@LakshmiNarayanan Beyond Adhyaya 1 you mostly have boring discussions of the technical details of Yagnas, with occasional forays into interesting philosophical topics scattered at random points in the text.

@LakshmiNarayanan By the way, if you want to know correspondence between the three-volume translation of the Shabara Bhashya and Kumarila Bhatta's works, the Shloka Vartika and Tantra Vartika together cover Adhyayas 1-3, so that corresponds to volume 1 of the Shabara Bhashya translation. And the Tuptika would cover the other two volumes.

@LakshmiNarayanan By the way, this is a case, where Kumarila Bhatta engages in an interesting philosophical discussion even though the corresponding part of Shabara's Bhashya doesn't have any philosophical discussion. The context is that the Purva Mimamsa Sutras are discussing a Vedic verse that says "the vessel must be washed" in a Jyotishtoma Yagna. Jaimini is discussing the issue of whether this means one vessel must be washed or all the vessels must be washed.

@LakshmiNarayanan Now Shabara, in commenting on this verse, says "Let us discuss the intention of this Vedic verse." Now Kumarila Bhatta zeroes in on Shabara's use of the word "intention", and so he launches an elaborate philosophical discussion about what "intention" means in the context of an Apaurusheya text.

@LakshmiNarayanan I think if Shabara knew that Kumarila Bhatta was going to hyperanalyze the word intention, he would have just changed "intention" to "meaning", haha

@LakshmiNarayanan Well no, he doesn't derive his doctrine about Sabdabrahman from Shabara's use of a word. He just utilizes Shabara's use of the word "intention" as an excuse to discuss the subject of what it means to talk about the intention of a Vedic verse.

@LakshmiNarayanan It's not uncommon for a commentator on a text to use something in the text as an excuse to go off on a tangent. For instance, near the beginning of his commentary Shabara gives his preferred interpretation of Adhyaya 1 Pada 1 Sutras 3-5 of the Purva Mimamsa Sutras, and then for no apparent reason he spends the next 25 pages describing how the Vrittikara, i.e. Upavarsha/Baudhayana, interprets the same three Sutras.

@LakshmiNarayanan Kumarila Bhatta's shishya Mandana Mishra, who later became a shishya of Adi Shankaracharya, says that even though Shabara disagrees with how the Vrittikara interprets these three Sutras, he still spends a lot of time discussing the Vrittikara's interpretation just because it gives him an excuse to discuss many interesting philosophical topics including the validity of Pramanas, the existence of the soul, and the philosophy of language.
