@Tezz @LakshmiNarayanan I just posted an answer related to Kumarila Bhatta's Tantra Vartika:
0
A: Kshatriyas and Alcohol consumption

Keshav SrinivasanKshatriyas and Vaishyas are allowed to drink certain forms of alcohol. Kumarila Bhatta discusses this in this excerpt from hisTantra Vartika, one of his commentaries on Jaimini's Purva Mimamsa Sutras. The context is that Kumarila Bhatta is discussing the fact that the practices of good men know...

@KeshavSrinivasan Oh ok nice!..

1 hour later…
1:46 AM
@Yogi Is his Devi Bhagvatam interpretation wrong?

@KeshavSrinivasan I'm still not completely convinced, let me reread the passages.

2:23 AM
@LakshmiNarayanan By the way, if something in Shabara's Bhashya doesn't make sense to you, often the best resource to turn to is the works of Kumarila Bhatta, since they are commentaries on Shabara's Bhashya.
@LakshmiNarayanan Kumarila Bhatta wrote three commentaries which together comment on the entirety of Shabara's Bhashya: 1. The Shloka Vartika, which comments on Shabara's Bhashya on Adhyaya 1 Pada 1 of the Purva Mimamsa Sutras. 2. The Tantra Vartika, which comments on the rest of Shabara's Bhashya on Adhyaya 1 as well Shabara's Bhashya on Adhyayas 2 and 3. 3. The Tuptika, which comments on the rest of Shabara's Bhashya.

@KeshavSrinivasan I can't find these on Archive..

2:39 AM
@LakshmiNarayanan Here is the Shloka Vartika: archive.org/details/slokavartika015341mbp
@LakshmiNarayanan And here's the Tantra Vartika, in two volumes. Here's volume 1: gdurl.com/VjD0/download And here's volume 2: gdurl.com/e8Ry/download
@LakshmiNarayanan The Tuptika has never been translated into English.

@KeshavSrinivasan Cool! Thanks.

@LakshmiNarayanan Thankfully it's not that big of a loss, because the main interesting part of the Purva Mimamsa Sutras is Adhyaya 1, which the Shloka Vartika and the Tantra Vartika together cover.
@LakshmiNarayanan Beyond Adhyaya 1 you mostly have boring discussions of the technical details of Yagnas, with occasional forays into interesting philosophical topics scattered at random points in the text.

@KeshavSrinivasan Yes, i remember this forewarning from before :D

@LakshmiNarayanan By the way, if you want to know correspondence between the three-volume translation of the Shabara Bhashya and Kumarila Bhatta's works, the Shloka Vartika and Tantra Vartika together cover Adhyayas 1-3, so that corresponds to volume 1 of the Shabara Bhashya translation. And the Tuptika would cover the other two volumes.

@KeshavSrinivasan ok cool. where in Kumarila Vartikas does he talk about Brahman specifically in reference as Shabda Brahman?

2:52 AM
@LakshmiNarayanan It's in the Tantra Vartika; see my question here:
3
Q: Which Purva Mimamsa philosophers think Brahman is the soul of the Vedas?

Keshav SrinivasanAs I discuss in this question, by far the most popular school of Hindu philosophy is the Vedanta school, which bases its tenets on the doctrines laid out in the Brahma Sutras, a work by the sage Vyasa that summarizes and systematizes the philosophical teachings of the Upanishads. (You can read th...

@KeshavSrinivasan yes this i remember, that's how i asked :)
@KeshavSrinivasan It's in Adhyaya 3 Pada 1.

@LakshmiNarayanan By the way, this is a case, where Kumarila Bhatta engages in an interesting philosophical discussion even though the corresponding part of Shabara's Bhashya doesn't have any philosophical discussion. The context is that the Purva Mimamsa Sutras are discussing a Vedic verse that says "the vessel must be washed" in a Jyotishtoma Yagna. Jaimini is discussing the issue of whether this means one vessel must be washed or all the vessels must be washed.
@LakshmiNarayanan Now Shabara, in commenting on this verse, says "Let us discuss the intention of this Vedic verse." Now Kumarila Bhatta zeroes in on Shabara's use of the word "intention", and so he launches an elaborate philosophical discussion about what "intention" means in the context of an Apaurusheya text.
@LakshmiNarayanan I think if Shabara knew that Kumarila Bhatta was going to hyperanalyze the word intention, he would have just changed "intention" to "meaning", haha

3:10 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan So you think that Kumarila's Shabda Vada is based on the use of the word 'intention' alone that occurs here?

S S
@KeshavSrinivasan @TheDestroyer @Pandya What the hell happened under this question? What is that user Alp Sankhya meant to spam the site? Calling Hinduism a laughing stock? What is the discussion happened?
in Discussion on question by Alp Sankhya: Did Lord Vishnu have 3 wives?, 8 hours ago, by Anurag Singh
@Aghori Why don't you just answer the question? Why are you judging someone's mind beforehand? So many assumptions on no basis.
There you go a mind of a teenager ^^^ :D
He didn't even realise that it is a spam question. Posting answers for reputation.

This was the same question posted by a previous account.

@SS yeah, this is clearly a spam account of another user.
@SS some of the stuff that spammer has said are not even repeatable!

3:31 AM
@LakshmiNarayanan Why no one flagged those comments?

@LakshmiNarayanan Well no, he doesn't derive his doctrine about Sabdabrahman from Shabara's use of a word. He just utilizes Shabara's use of the word "intention" as an excuse to discuss the subject of what it means to talk about the intention of a Vedic verse.

@SS No idea, i just visited the room.

@SS I deleted the chat room.

S S
@LakshmiNarayanan From now on flag comments which are rude and abusive. Mods will take care of them. You can earn a badge by flagging too.
@KeshavSrinivasan Thanks. Put that user under radar.
If another account of that user pops up, I will raise this on meta.

@LakshmiNarayanan It's not uncommon for a commentator on a text to use something in the text as an excuse to go off on a tangent. For instance, near the beginning of his commentary Shabara gives his preferred interpretation of Adhyaya 1 Pada 1 Sutras 3-5 of the Purva Mimamsa Sutras, and then for no apparent reason he spends the next 25 pages describing how the Vrittikara, i.e. Upavarsha/Baudhayana, interprets the same three Sutras.
@LakshmiNarayanan Kumarila Bhatta's shishya Mandana Mishra, who later became a shishya of Adi Shankaracharya, says that even though Shabara disagrees with how the Vrittikara interprets these three Sutras, he still spends a lot of time discussing the Vrittikara's interpretation just because it gives him an excuse to discuss many interesting philosophical topics including the validity of Pramanas, the existence of the soul, and the philosophy of language.

3:59 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan Shows how powerful influence one can gain in pushing it as part of a commentary of a revered text than if they espouse their beliefs as a separate text.
@SS Honestly I don't care about the badge but yeah I flagged it for being blanket offensive.

S S
@LakshmiNarayanan Yeah. Flagging keeps the site clean. Badges are bonuses.

@SS btw can you take a look at my edit?

S S
@LakshmiNarayanan I already approved it. One more user should approve it.

@SS ok thanks @KeshavSrinivasan please take a look.

4:17 AM
@LakshmiNarayanan Haha yeah, although it need not be so nefarious. Sometimes a commentator will take a tangent just to say something that the author of the original work would anyway agree with.

@Yogi You probably never thought that our religion gives sexual dealings as a fruit in heaven. So you might be a little hurt to know that these fruits in heaven do exist. But do not loose your trust on Hinduism or your IshtaDevataa. The sexual fruits are just fruits, nothing else. Those who want to achieve oneness with God, do not hanker for these fruits. So I, a humble person in front of your Greatness, would suggest you- Never loose trust on Hinduism. Moreover, Trust your god. A few verses in hindu Scriptures cannot flicker your unflinching devotion to God. 😊 — Anurag Singh 9 hours ago

@SS Really? :D

6:57 AM
@LakshmiNarayanan Only they know. :P But I forgot Fermat's little theorem there. 1 mistake. They were done with me only in 5-8 minutes, when they were taking 15-20 minutes for others. So not confident.

S S
@KrishnShweta Yes. :P We can site related issues in that room.

@Aghori When will you know? what was the question on Fermat's Little Theorem?

Oh. @KrishnShweta @SS how much distance from Kachiguda station? Btw, I checked almost all stations of Hyderabad
@LakshmiNarayanan Actually, I read algorithm to check primality of a number using Fermat's theorem. When they asked me to give algo to count number of primes till given input N, instead of saying Langrange theorem I complicated the situation. At the end after giving up i explained naive approach to count number of variables checking each number wheter it is prime or not.

@Aghori Kachiguda is near only. If railway is used then it will take just 20 min.

@KrishnShweta Hello... how are you?...

@Tezz I'm good and how about you?

Well I stayed at IIITH only @KrishnShweta @SS

Yes I liked the institute. @SS
Professors were also very good there.

@Aghori I thought sieve of Eratosthenes was the only way to count!

@LakshmiNarayanan Yes, I wanted to say that also. But instead said - I will apply inclusion exclusion principal.
Then they asked me how segmentation fault occur. I explained. Then done

7:10 AM
@Aghori oh ok, I think IIT Kanpur guys found a primality test in early 2000s, but i think it is quite involved to understand it.

@LakshmiNarayanan Is it okay to say inclusion-exclusion instead of seive of Eratosthenes.

@KrishnShweta I'm also fine...😁😀😀

@Aghori I am not sure, can you give more detail on how you used it?

Posted an answer for Jalandhara question.

A: Vishnu seducing Jalandhar's wife Vrinda: an act of injustice? Why?

The DestroyerThe source you have cited in question is not proper. You should read Rudra Samhita (Yuddha Khanda) (chapter 13 - Chapter 25) of Shiva Mahapurana and/or Uttarakhada (Chapter 3 - Chapter 18) of Padma Purana to know complete story though Chapter 97 of Linga Purana mentions different story. First of...

@Aghori I feel this is correct.

@TheDestroyer now do you understand the problems with puranas ? and their demaning stories on deities ..

@RakeshJoshi I don't find anything demeaning.

then why downvoting questions ?
allow them..
and give a logical explanation.

7:18 AM
So is there any hope that they meant seive of Eratosthenes when I said Inclusion-exclusion principle will work?
@LakshmiNarayanan

@RakeshJoshi He used bad words. Moreover, that guy came here with agenda.
See Alpa Samkhya = minority

tell the answer for krishna questions

He is a Muslim who wants to troll Hinduism.

@Aghori They are equivalent!

@RakeshJoshi The Muslim guy (pBUH) is on Jihad, he wants us to save from hell fire. 😂

7:19 AM
as long as he is quoting texts u shd be able to justify if such things are indeed given in hindu scriptures

Sounds good. @LakshmiNarayanan :)

@RakeshJoshi But he should be respectful at least. He can't use words like "rape" without knowing esoteric meanings.

@KeshavSrinivasan - vedabase.com/en/sb/11/5/13 - a verse about soutramani yajna

then u explain esoteric meaning na ?

the stories can be conveyed with simple stories too .. isnt it ?
@SwiftPushkar sautramani is not a yajna

@RakeshJoshi I think most of stories in Puranas as metaphors

7:22 AM
he is calling people ***hole etc,. in comments in case you didn't know.

what is esoteric meaning behind wife beating ?
what has ramanuja given in his translation ?

@RakeshJoshi See Buddha Story. There are no Daityas. Puranas called people who did excessive Yajnas through animal sacrifice as Daityas.

Right IMO. We should take such questions as opportunities to present our stance.

@RakeshJoshi Daitya and Devas are in you.

@RakeshJoshi - hmm its said in SB that it's a yajna @KeshavSrinivasan answer also says so

7:24 AM
asura and daitya is not bad word .
@SwiftPushkar you are right
i confused with some other ritual

Which one sir?

daitya and asura is not demons .. only due to some puranic stories they are used as negative words
mitra and varuna etc are reffered as asura in vedas.

Esoteric meanings of wife beating. Stick is intellect & beating is domination. If wife is unable to understand, brainwash her with razor sharp intellect or dominate till she gives up..

@Aghori good one.

@RakeshJoshi meanings which were once Bahuarthi becomes Akarthi over the time. Correct translation too can't translate accurately because meanings & context changes over the time.

7:29 AM
??

We should have faith on Lord Shiva, Vishnu & Vedas. They can't be incorrect.

@SwiftPushkar the translation is wrong i think .. the sautramani has consuming some small portion and not smelling
@TheDestroyer
this vaishnava blog says kanchi periyava as notorious ... !
http://narayanastra.blogspot.in/p/on-symbols-and-practices-of-vaishnavism.html

@RakeshJoshi - Two different texts says the same , its only smelling , in vaidic sacrifices its only touching & not killing is said 😊

@RakeshJoshi Let's forget about that blog. It's not good to talk that blog here.

@TheDestroyer - I couldn't find these verse numbers from these Puranas as those verses are asked by OP in question.Can u pls. reconfirm that when will free.😊 Then we will be anle comment about wrong verses numbers provided in question - Vishnu purana (3.18)
Linga Purana (2.71)
Padma Purana (3.252)
Garuda Purana (1.1) didn't say anything abt.buddha its just opening prayer.
Padma purana -3.252

7:43 AM
@SwiftPushkar He meant part and chapter names.
FOr example, Vishnu Purana book 3 and Chapter 18
Similarly, other Puranas.

S S
@TheDestroyer Anurag singh provided some verses in the comments and translations in the coments. Look at them too.

@SS yeah. He is correct, Vishnu did intercourse with Vrinda.

@SwiftPushkar its wrong translation

there is mention of killing and body parts is also mentioned

@TheDestroyer - yes , know that , but what i mean is those verse numbers aren't there , they do not exisist , so its a mistake from wikipedia

@TheDestroyer why u remain silent ? u have to do something for it ...
on what basis he says about paramacharya

7:47 AM
@RakeshJoshi - yeah , might be symbolic killing also , but the translation is not wrong ,

then verse itslelf wrong

@SwiftPushkar No. They are correct. They are Khandas and Chapter numbers.
@RakeshJoshi which one?

in sutras they also mention how many animals and what parts etc..

S S
@RakeshJoshi That blog is not a part of SE. So considering it or not is upto you. It's just a blog. There are many such blogs.

@SwiftPushkar I think that regardless of what portion of the Isha Upanishad is chanted that sloka is first to be chanted. This kind of logic is true for each of the upanishads respectively if i'm not wrong.

@Tezz @Pandya I just posted a question related to Adi Shankaracharya's Brahma Sutra Bhashya:

Q: Who believes in the two-Kapilas theory and who doesn't?

Keshav SrinivasanAs I discuss in this question, by far the most popular school of Hindu philosophy is the Vedanta school. But there are five other Astika or orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy: Purva Mimamsa, Samkhya, Yoga, Vaisheshika, and Nyaya. My question is about Samkhya. The Samkhya school believed that ...
